Thank you, NetGalley, who provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I don't tend to read a lot of poetry. From time-to-time it is nice to break up a cycle of novels with a small book of poetry, just to refresh my palette, which I thought might be the case here. Another nice thing about poetry books that I've found in the past is they're generally easy to get through.

I do feel bad giving this book as low of a review as three stars because it is poetry and it is art and all art is subjective, but the content of a lot of these poems I feel I wasn't in a proper mind-space to understand completely. The poetry was very dark and depressing for the majority of the book, which may speak more to the author's experiences. As someone who doesn't identify as religious, some of the poems were also hard to get through due to the theme of Christianity being so prevalent. In fact, I began skipping those poems because I just wasn't comfortable with it.

Again, poetry is an art-form and all art is subjective. It wasn't something I could connect with, but I'm sure there are people out there who will identify with more of these poems than I did!

This collection of poems is so basic and pure I would say.
I enjoyed it so much. It gave me joy and satisfaction to read such short lines impregnated with so much of self realisation and wit.
In general, this collection talks about being a person which represents basically most of us. It also talks about love and false promises, nature and human nature, failures and goodbyes, pain and happiness, friendship and life in general. I would like to say it's a bit personal. I usually do not enjoy reading about prayers and gods but the few collections regarding these themes were written so well in this one.

The only part which seems to be lacking in this collection is a more elaborate or wholesome poem as I feel like some of the poems were left incomplete. As much as I enjoyed all the poems, still there was a nagging feeling of waiting for the end of most of the poems.

I love the cover, I love the contents, I love the writing style and the language.

I enjoyed reading all of the poems and I will be looking forward to read every work by the author.
Thanks #NetGalley for providing me with a copy of #TheVoiceOfMyMind

This is a hard review to write, as the author seems like a very nice man and poetry is such a vulnerable thing to share. That said, this is clearly self published and the poet really could have used spending some time in writers' workshops where people would give brutally honest feedback. I went to the author's website (it's named Fish Books after his last name) and this is his bio:

"T. A. Fish is a Christian author, who spent over 5 years crafting the deep, provocative, and thought-provoking poetry collection, The Voice of My Mind.

"The Voice of My Mind is a journey of the human spirit; one that dives into the deepest and darkest crevices of the human mind, and then reaches for the height of spiritual enlightenment and redemption. " - T. A. Fish

The best poems ever and the best poetry books"

I'll let all that speak for itself. The poems themselves are mostly in rhyme. They deal with sadness, death, friendship and God for the most part. This is the first time I've ever seen "woe is me" used in a poem, and it is not used ironically. The author occasionally uses words like hath and thou.

Two small excerpts--

From Sweet Friend:

How now
My,
Sweetest friend;

Will you remember
Me,
In the end?

And from Savior:

May my soul rise up
And praise Your name.

May the angels call out
With a shout
"Jesus came!"

Two stars because it takes courage to put your poetry out there, the author seems like a sincere man, and the book has a lovely layout.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

This book is a compilation of 75 poems in total all talking about death, sorrow and then god, love & hope. The poems were short & concise. The poet points out various matters of life in his poems like What's our purpose in life, and so there are many doubts that left unanswered in life. the poet has also dedicated a beautiful poem for his departed father indicating that we always admire or value someone until they are gone forever. The poet also give a reference in one of his poems that how people change with the passage of time like in the early days people were so kind and caring but now people only care about money & materialism. In one of his poem he also mentions that Everyone hides a story behind an artificial smile. So, we should never judge anything/anyone by what we see.

Overall, it was a nice one time read but the poems were not so impactful and raw and it didn't touched my heart If I will be honest. But as poems are emotions expressed in words and are someone's feelings, we shouldn't judge it critically.

So, If you want to read poems about true love, life's purpose, burdens of life, heart's pain, fate, goodbye, loneliness, death, life's plan, why do we pray and something like this. Then, you should give this a try.

This is definitely a quick read and I am a fan of poetry but I don’t think I’ll be able to rate this well. I want to say this as nicely as possible but this is not good poetry, in my opinion. This feels flat and like regurgitated lines from other poems and scripture. It’s without emotion. I read 27%. I won’t be able to help boost this with a good rating. Perhaps someone else will enjoy this more but I’m just going to shift it to the abandoned books shelf.

I didn’t enjoy it. The book has a lot of religious poems and i did NOT like that. The rhyme seems just off in some poems and I didn’t feel that there was any harmony between the collection (I don’t even know how to explain it).

Thanks to Netgalley for letting me read an advanced copy of this eARC. I didn’t realise going in that this was a very religious focused set of poetry and had I known that I probably wouldn’t have chosen to read it because it’s not my sort of thing at all. I do think this should be made clearer in the blurb because I imagine there will be others like me that aren’t the true audience for this book.

I also found some of the poetry to be quite dark at times and very focused on death and again that’s not something I’d choose to read about. I didn’t particularly enjoy any of the poems and I think it’s because I was never the right audience for this collection.

I didn't realise that this would be so religious, and as an atheist, I just wasn't interested in that. The collection wasn't awful necessarily but they were very dark and depressing and then became very religious which I didn't want. So, it was probably more of a "me" thing.

Oh, I hate to give this book a negative review because it's obvious the author put a lot of heart into these poems. However, the writing style just seemed overly simplistic to me. The rhymes are expected and there are a lot of commas where there shouldn't be commas. (I did receive an ARC, so this may be changed in the final edition, but that doesn't change the rhymes.)

Here's an example of a poem so you can see what I mean. These verses are pulled from "Toxic."

Whispering in my ear
A woman, whom I fear

Ear and fear are quite simple rhymes, and you don't need the comma between woman and whom. Later in the poem:

A kiss of poison sweets
Piercing, my hearts sheath

"Hearts" needs an apostrophe, and you don't need the comma after "piercing." Plus, this couplet doesn't have any significant meaning in relation to the rest of the poem, in my opinion. Here's one more example from the poem "Friendship."

There was a little boy,
Staring quietly, without coy.

Upon, seeing his friend,
His eyes light up, end to end.

I read this a couple times because I was waiting for it to make sense. But I can't figure out what it's trying to say. Honestly, this collection just isn't my cup of tea. The rhymes come across as trite and unnecessary, leaving me unable to connect with the content. I hate to leave a negative review, I really do. I'm sure there are readers out there who will love this collection, so my recommendation is to read some of the poems and see for yourself.

*I received a free ARC of this book, with thanks to the author and NetGalley. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

I would hesitate to describe the content of this collection of poetry as ‘avant-garde’, as listed in the blurb. Instead I would say that it was heavily reliant on traditional forms, such as prayers, psalms or greeting card verses.

There is a strong Christian theme to many of the poems in the collection, following generic themes of God, Christ and faith, rather than specific exploration of the author’s relationship with his beliefs. In fact, the lack of concrete and specific details is a stylistic omission that runs throughout the collection; leaving the emotions and ideas vague and lacking in depth.

The author’s choice of irregular patterns of rhythm and rhyme for many of the poems – writing in free verse style – could be considered avant-garde, but there is a heavy reliance on clichés, rhetorical questions and non sequiturs that weights the overall impression back towards the old from the new. Those poems that do follow more traditional rhyming schemes seem to sacrifice the meaning of the words in order to force the rhymes.

I feel that the main benefit of this text is that a number of the poems make nice standard prayers that can be used for personal or public worship purposes. However, aside from the religious aspect, I look to poetry to touch my heart and/or move me to strong emotions, which unfortunately this collection fails to do.

"What is the meaning
Behind your eyes?
And,
Where is the truth hidden,
Within the lies?"

I took this book by accident. Do I regret it? Not a tiny bit. Do I love it? No. Do I revere it? Abso-fuckin-lutely yes! The fact which made me not slam my head for taking it by accident? The fact it took 5 years to complete this collection.

Constructed with religious and spiritual themes connecting it to the worldly themes like love, pain, loss and death, the rhyming is one aspect that stands out! I am not a fan of rhyming poetry but this collection contained poems which are precise and concise. It is a brilliant piece of work. Religious notions don't really bother me but it intrigues me. This is truly one of the best poetry collection on that aspect.

Fish has done an incredible job with this collection! I liked the first half better than the second half but the poems started becoming more truthful as it passed. I connected well with few poems which venture on topics that enchant and intrigues me. It puts a rhythmic trance on the reader which I completely adored! It would have been better if illustrations accompanied it since it has 70+ poems. Nevertheless, it is an interesting and a quick read!

Recommended: If religious notations do not bother you, this poetry collection is for you!

I am not a poetic person, but I have read my fair share of poetry.
Unfortunately I did not understand a lot of these poems, and wondered if some words were chosen simply for the fact that they rhymed
For example;

What do you dream as your eyes close ?
What do you know of the world from the crow

I went over this line multiple times before giving up and moving on.

I found the writing style to be simplistic and expected.
And while I am sure these words make sense and obviously speak to the writer as well as some readers, I personally could not get behind it.

The Voice of My Mind is a short collection of poetry by T.A. Fish. I liked the initial idea of the collection, however there were several things that put me off of it. The religious poetry didn't bother me, but it seemed very run of the mill in my opinion. The rhyme scheme was also very simplistic and felt like it limited the thoughts of the author. I felt like it would have been more beneficial to free the rhyming scheme and actually put their thoughts into a better word selection. It seemed very gimmicky to me. There was potential here, but it just didn't meet my hopes for it.

Death, comes with grief and sorrow, as the healing begins then comes possibly a belief in a God, then hope to move on to love. This is how The Voice Of My Minds 75 poems travel. T. A. Fish writes and complies with these poems over 5 years. I love poetry, however, these poems were dark and even the movement to love seems to be darker than I presumed love would be.

There were three poems I did enjoy, Goodbye, Brain and Dream. Their literary style reached out to me. The rest of the poems were a little too creative writing class for me. I guess maybe the compilation in total just didn’t speak to me.

Thanks for the opportunity to read The Voice Of My Mind in lieu of my honest review.

"The Voice of My Mind," by T.A. Fish is a rich collection of poetry filled with the ups and downs of life, as well as his spiritual cries out to God. I found this collection to be a fascinating and quick read with lots of chew on. There is an interesting, eclectic array of poems that are all well-written with a beautiful rhythm and flow.

The poet relies heavily on repetition and rhetorical questions to highlight his subjects and ask questions to the reader without any specific answers. The result is a reflective work that is thought-provoking.

Some of my favorite poems include: Misunderstood, If Only, A Shrewd Voice, Dark Fruit, Alone, Lost, Query, Victory and Joy. There was so much in this small collection of about 60+ poems that these will be enjoyable to return to time and time again.

I definitely recommend this book!

This collection of poems speaks mainly to the theme of death. This made for, at times, quite a down-beat/depressing read. There were a few poems which stood out for me: phantom, failure, whispers, the covered veil, happiness, & cloud 9. But on the whole this poetry collection didn't do it for me. This doesn't mean it's not for you! As I think if you were aware of how much of the book is about death you may pick it up in a different mindset, but I expected broader themes and more diversity of poem topics. As a non-religious person, I also found there were quite a lot of Christian references which didn't really do anything for me except make the poems less relatable. So if you're in the mood for poems about death and are happy with religious references, give this one a go and see what you think!

Fish shares his thoughts through this collection of poems. Touching on topics of love, spirituality, regret, and purpose, Fish communicates with readers through short poems and rhyme.
While I liked how most of the poems seemed to flow in a natural progression of theme, some of the poems broke that flow of the overall collection. More irritating to me, though, was when the poems broke their own inner structure of rhyme established in the first couple of stanzas. I failed to grasp the overall idea of the collection, but I did really like about six of the poems as they spoke to my heart and made me stop to ponder the ideas Fish proposed.

Thank you T.A. Fish and the publishing company for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is really an amazing collection of poems, however I do think it could've been a little bit longer. By the time I finished it I did want more and I think 80 pages isn't a lot for a collection of Poetry. Although that may just be me and my opinion.

I would like to see a few happy poems as well if I were to read Poetry. I don't mind a few dark ones but this one was a collection of very depressing poems..

Other than that T.A. Fish really is a talented writer and the poems were remarkable.

I read this in one sitting yesterday, but haven't got a chance to write the review until right now. Well, honestly, I do really love this book so much. Mostly it tells about love which I don't think very relatable for me. But I guess it is very suitable for daily read for people in general considering it talks about love life in general. Let me make this clear that not every page is talking about love, there are lots of things that the author mentioned inside the book. I won't spoil it right now, you need to check it out yourself. :)

Each poem is beautiful to read and flow very well. The collection deals with themes of grief, love, despair and enlightenment, which many may relate to. It's a nice short read but I don't think I'll be revisiting it anytime soon due to the fact I just didn't connect to it. Others may enjoy this more than me as it is a well-crafted collection of poems.

I picked this compilation of poems recently and unfortunately I couldn't make it through the book. Reading poetry is relaxing, intimate and something that I do to feed my agitated soul. This book couldn't really do that for me!
I don't expect poetry to be happy or frolicky but this book was a little too pessimistic as it kept talking about being lonely, sad etc, and not in a way that I could relate.
Thank you, next 😅..

TW: Religion.

This starts off okay, however the poems seem a bit jumbled and disjointed. They are incredibly disconnected from one another as well. Then we get near the end when it really just becomes "God is the answer to all, he will save us! We are nothing without him!" And I'm really not a fan of preachy poetry.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC!

This collection transitions from shallow, sad poetry to trite Christian poetry. It reminds me of creative writing classes in middle school, down to the unnecessary commas and clumsy rhyming. I cannot recommend this book.
