The Weaver Trilogy #2

The Story Raider

Rate this book
Deceiving an empire is a treacherous game.

Tanwen and the Corsyth weavers race to collect the strands of an ancient cure that might save Gryfelle. But Tanwen has a secret: Gryfelle isn’t the only one afflicted by the weaver's curse.

As Queen Braith struggles to assert her rule, a new arrival throws her tenuous claim to the Tirian throne into question. Braith’s heart is turned upside down, and she’s not sure she can trust anyone—least of all herself.

The puppet master behind Gareth’s rise to power has designs on the story weavers and will stop at nothing to reclaim the throne. A plot to incite the angry peasants of Tir takes shape, and those dearest to Tanwen will be caught in the crossfire. As the fight for Tir consumes the realm, no one can remain innocent.

Okay, friends. This little story of my heart is finally out there. I'm so excited to share it with you.

Here are some content warnings/notes:

Like The Story Peddler, The Story Raider is a clean read. This book would probably be rated PG or PG-13 due to fantasy violence and thematic elements, if it were a movie. My opinion is that it's appropriate for ages 12/13+, though your mileage may vary, depending on your judgment of such matters. I know every reader's (and every parent's) lines are different in this regard.

That said, I introduce a character in Raider who has a traumatic past. While not explicitly described or depicted, this character alludes to the sexual abuse that shaped and wrecked her. Though the circumstances are quite different, this character's journey is based on my life. I debated with myself about her a lot. Should I write her story in this way? Should I take on something so dark and unsavory, something that has affected me so personally?

At the end of the day, I wrote her the way I wanted to—the way she stepped into my mind, fully conceived, when a title suggestion from my editor sparked the idea for this character. And that's because, best the experts can estimate, one in five girls and one in twenty boys under the age of eighteen is sexually assaulted. If you know more than a handful of people, you know someone with this story. If you know me, you know someone with this story. Because of that, I decided to portray this character as openly and honestly as I could.

I know you will use your best judgment as a reader here. I cherish the trust that develops between reader and author through the sharing of story. If you have specific questions, I'm always happy to respond as I'm able.

This book is absolutely INCREDIBLE. As a sequel, it perfectly carries on from the character arcs and storytelling of the first book and it heightens the tension and the stakes and dives in deeper into what makes the characters who they are. It's an absolutely glorious ride.

I loved the character development that happened in this story. How the relationships were growing and changing, and oh-so naturally too. There's so much conflict between the characters and it just fuels the plot like nothing else.

Tannie is such a great character. So relatable in so many ways. I loved seeing her relationships with her father and the other cast and crew, and all the crazy twists of change.

Count me in for #MoreMor in book three! xD

I may have cried a little bit in a few parts of this story. There's some absolutely beautiful moments, moments where you just want to smash some sense into the characters, and other moments where it's just so sad but so true to the heart of the story at the same time.

The plot thickens in this book, and we start learning more about who the villain is and what their secret plan is. Lindsay has done an amazing job with the mystery and tension in this corner and I'm SO dying to know more! Book three is so far away.

I also have to give a moment of appreciation to the adventure and seafaring aesthetic of this story! I ADORED that!!

Some little content warnings below, though there's not much that I can remember. I try to keep the spoilers to a limit, but enter at your own discretion:

Overall, this book absolutely swept away my expectations with something even grander, and I love love LOVE it.

NOTE: I received an ARC from Lindsay Franklin in exchange for an honest review.

UMMMM WOW WhAT THE HECK

I wasn't going to give this five stars until the last few chapters but THEY BLEW ME AWAY. The conflict, the descriptions, the STORY, the characters....ACK.

Let's just say Franklin is the queen of writing hot guys who are also entirely functional and don't just exist to be hot. Kharn, Warmil, Mor...those are my favorites, but let's be honest, all the guys in this series are AMAZING and all of them are just so cool, too.

Also the magic.

Also the TWISTS.

Was it a little cliche? YUP.

Was it still quite obviously a passion project, full of all of Franklin's heart and soul?

YUP.

Love, love, LOVE.

I liked this book even better than the first. We get a whole lot more world building and character development in this one. I really enjoyed seeing more of this world including the other cultures and how they worked under Tir's rule. I was still a little confused with the whole magic system, but I certainly got to know this world much better as a whole.

The concept of the curse and the search for the cure was of course right up my alley. And I grew extremely fond of them all throughout the course of this book. Tanwen was once again her charming self. My favorite thing about her is her unique character voice. It's so plainspoken and different and definitely helps me to connect to her character. Her growing relationship with her father was heartwarming. Obviously I love Mor because who doesn't love a pirate? He was somewhat broody but then I also understand the stress that he was under. I felt so bad for Brac and I don't blame him for anything. Braith is a saint. Kharn is my new favorite character in this series. He's just amazing honestly. The other characters were also amazing and prepare for a few harsh deaths.

That ending was rude and I need the third book immediately. Please and thank you.

I received a free copy of this book from the author, all opinions, however, are my own.

Aw man...

Lindsay has written another beautiful, stirring, and entertaining fantasy in her Weaver Trilogy. The Story Raider takes threads from The Story Peddler and continues to weave (ha) a brilliant tale that explores trauma, tragedy, and the beauty and power of art.

My aw man is because the third book isn't here to dive into today.

Don't miss The Story Raider. You need Mor of this in your life.

I love this series and the characters, but the thing between Tannie and Mor was a bit frustrating and we lost characters I loved so for those reasons, I can't give this a full 5 stars.

I'm always a little nervous about the second novel in a series. Will it be as good? Will it be as epic? Will I fall in love all over again?

The answer to all three questions regarding The Story Raider?

YES! And again I shout, YES, a thousand times YES!

The excitement! The people! The adventure! The lands! I'm so, so satisfied!

And yet I'm not. Oh, I want more! I want more Tannie, more Braith...more Mor!!! I want to tell you all about the story but I'll get spoilery and don't want to do that.

Let me just say...

Give me The Story Hunter! This is epic high fantasy of the highest caliber, and you must not miss out!

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley, and all opinions are my own. I'm under no obligation.

And I'm spent...cue faint **thunk**

You cannot, I repeat cannot, end a book like that and expect me to wait who knows how long for a sequel!! That ending killed me!

Everything in this book was amazing! The characters their personalities deepened, the plot thickened, and my love for this series grew.

I honestly cannot put into words my feelings for this book.....I have so many yet I can't seem to get the words. I also don't know what to say without spoiling anything.

I loved this sequel. I loved the adventure that I went on with these characters. I went through laugs, butterflies, tears, and so many more emotions.

The characters were developed so much through this book. I feel in love with them over and over again.

The relationships of various characters also developed so naturally that I want to shout about this amazing book from the rooftops.

I am definitely pro-Mor and I want more of him in book 3. Please give me more of him, Ms. Franklin!!

Overall, since I can't get a decent review out due to spoilers, just take my words that this book was an amazing and definitely a wonderful sequel to the first book.

*FTC: I received this book from Celebrate Lit in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review.*

(Originally posted on my book blog here, along with pictures and reminiscing about the Story Raider Launch Party at Realm Makers 2019!)

That was a wild ride! I feel like this book is better than the first one but at the same time this one had more plot things that I was . . . less than pleased about? XD So I’m just a little mixed on it.

But I definitely enjoyed reading it, and I need the next book yesterday because CLIFFHANGER. *dies* I can’t wait to find out what happens!

It’s going to be sooo hard to review this without spoilers but I’ll give it a shot.

The Awesome

+ It was definitely a really good book. It was so well written, and gorgeous and exciting and (usually) fun and epic. It kind of felt like a movie and really pulled me along. And there were some awesome twists that got me really excited! :D Overall, despite having some quibbles (which I’ll get into later) it was a really enjoyable read!

+ THE SETTING. It. Was. Absolutely. Breathtaking. I loved getting to see all the different places they sailed to! And all of the different cultures and peoples and scenery and lands. This world is so gorgeous and vivid—and so are the story weaving parts! *flails around* SO PRETTY. I always love the story parts. There was so much epicness going down and it’s just so visual and stunning, both in setting and with all the weaving scenes. (Like the scene in the white-blossomed grove. You know what I’m talking about.)

+ There’s just so much going ON in this book. I was super impressed at how everything managed to weave together (no pun intended) and fit in this fairly ordinary-sized book when it had such sweeping scales of epic things going down all over the place. It was tight and well-paced, I guess is what I’m trying to say, and had a lot going on which made it super exciting!

+ The banter and snatches of humor made me so happy! That added a lot of fun and is one of the reasons I had such a good time reading it. I also love many of the characters (even if they frustrate me sometimes. XD) and loved getting to continue reading their story! And we got new characters too, which was awesome, and I’m really liking them. Basically, hanging out with these people mostly made me really happy. ^_^

+ Also, I love Braith! Her chapters and the “feel” of them were some of my absolute favorites! I actually kind of wish the whole book was about her and a certain new character who showed up halfway and did plot-twist things to my mind. XD (A new favorite! :O Joining Mor. Cool, now I have too favorites. XD) I would read a whole book about Braith and her problems at the palace and this spoiler person, please and thank you. :D Seriously.

The Less-Than-Awesome (For Me)

(Please note that everything in this category is subjective and totally a “me” thing! I’m not saying it’s a bad book, at all, just that these things were less enjoyable for me, personally—but they might be another reader’s favorites! :))

- Love triangles. Not my thing and kind of frustrating. :P In a way it’s better than in the first book, and in a way . . . really not. XD

- Darker, sad stories—also not my favorite. I appreciate that tackling tougher subjects is important in fiction, and I know characters die, but that doesn’t mean I have to be happy about it getting really sad, especially in the second half. (*cue Theoden voice-over* “So much death . . .”) Related, I know spending time with the villains’ POV to see what’s going on is important but I wish we didn’t have to so much because ugh. :P

- Sometimes things confused me, especially not really knowing what different weaver powers could or couldn’t do. Maybe it’s just the usual nothing-is-explained (especially not magic systems) in fiction these days. Or maybe (entirely possible) it’s the fact that I read the first book over a year ago and forgot details and characters and plot points. :P

- Mixed feelings about some of the characters, and how some of them did idiotic things. XD Everything about Brac’s plot—meh. I didn’t really care for him in the first place, but REALLY? And I love Mor but I don’t know if I toootally ship him with Tanwen because I dunno if she deserves him. :P Sometimes I love Tannie and other times she’s irrational and self-centered and felt fourteen and kinda frustrated me. XD (At this point I’m mostly shipping side characters, because YES. There are two side ships I absolutely love. :D)

- There were just a lot of turns that things took in the plot that I wasn’t enthused about. Some are covered above and some are spoilers, but anyway. I’m curious how things will finish up in the final book, though!

Conclusion

It’s a good book, just with some things that I personally didn’t love, but I still really enjoyed reading it and it was GORGEOUS. And Braith etc.! And that world! And the fun banter! Plus, that cliffhanger! I’m anxiously awaiting The Story Hunter! I need it! What’s going to happennnn?

(Note: I received a free e-ARC from the author, and ended up buying and reading a paperback instead. XD All opinions are my own.)

After reading The Story Peddler last year I honestly didn't think it would be possible to be more invested in a book. Well, The Story Raider proved me wrong. It was the only book I've read this year that had me up until the wee hours of the morning because I *had* to know what came next. All of the danger, action, and heartstring-tugging makes this easily my favorite read of 2019!

"I’ll see them again, lass." She smiled at me through sudden tears. "Mourning is for this life. I live for the next."

Heres the time to write another review!! EEK AND for the second book of one of my favorite book series ever..! VERY excited for this one y’all.. So let me take a trip back to memory Lane of my original thoughts for this one…

5.01⭐ (I will try to make this Spoiler free but no guarantees!) 14+

THOUGHTS

The first time I read this book at the end of it I just sat in a corner of my room and stared into a bliss LIKE OH MY GOSH… WHAT AN ENDING BUT I’ll get to that later..

Lidnsay Franklin has such a gift for storytelling herself that just makes me all warm and fussy every time I read her books! She has the type of writing that shocks you on how good it involves you into the plot and story, And thats what I love about her!

ALSO LIKE some of the characters are just so well written that whenever I think of a pirate FOR INSTANCE I THINK about Mor, LOVE THE MAN…

I'm so glad that I found out about these books BECAUSE WHAT WOULD A BOOK WORLD FOR ME BE WITHOUT THESE ONES?!? These are the ones that made me madly in love with writing and just the Fantasy world even though I didnt even like them at first I STILL WAS IN LOVE WITH THEM…. Its like that one movie that you always hated when you were a kid but when you were older its your favorite movie..GET ME SOME POPCORN Y’ALL..

But thats just a quick run down of my spaced together thoughts…

THINGS I DIDN’T LOVE ABOUT THIS BOOK

Y’all I only have little thoughts but it never really like puts down the rating unless IM VERY BOTHERED… Today it was only little thoughts… But the little thoughts were like WHY DID I cried at that part.. Like you grow to love him so much.. AND LIKE HE WAS TANWENS only friend at times besides that … Nothing else!

PLOT

Tanwen and the Corsyth weavers race to collect the strands of an ancient cure that might save Gryfelle. But Tanwen has a secret—Gryfelle isn’t the only one afflicted by the weaver's curse.

As Queen Braith struggles to assert her rule, a new arrival throws her tenuous claim to the Tirian throne into question. Braith’s heart is turned upside down, and she’s not sure she can trust anyone—least of all herself.

The puppet master behind Gareth’s rise to power has designs on Tanwen and the story weavers and will stop at nothing to reclaim the throne. A plot to incite the angry peasants of Tir takes shape, and those dearest to Tanwen will be caught in the crossfire. As the fight for Tir consumes the realm, no one can remain innocent

ROMANCE: 2/10

While there was only one kiss that is not with the main protagonist either (but thats only what I remember there still could be another LIKE IM SORRY I JUST DONT REMEMBER KISSES YALL) in this one there still was mentions of feelings and just trying not to fall in love but still falling in love.

VIOLENCE: 4/10
there's a couple of pretty intense fight scenes, and several characters are killed and/or almost killed.

OTHER:

A newly introduces character (omgosh I love her so much though) in the past was sexually abused and is very broken…

MAGIC:
Theres Dark magic but its very much stated how its bad..

LANGUAGE: N/A
(The New Character with the past is why I bumped the age range up to 14+ But thats just my personal rating)

..-CHARACTERS-..

(okay I know that Tanwen is the Protagonist BUT I HAVE TO…)

Mor En-Taerae:
(Fan girl giggle)

I CAN’T describe my love for this man like he’s at the top of book boy friend list y’all granit there’s times where I just wanna grab him by the neck and shake him about the situation with him and his sister. LIKE BRO ALL SHE WANTED WAS FOR YOUR PROTECTION… But thats all just because sometimes like I think that I like Diggy more but sometimes he makes up for it

Tanwen En-Yestin:

Its so creepy how much she reminds me of myself sometimes and yes sometimes I just get so mad at myself LIKE SOMETIMES I GET SO mad at her but I still love her soo much… She’s sweet in many ways

Gryfelle:

……..GIRL I LOVE YOU SOO MUCH… UGH I CAN’T HANDLE HOW YOU THOUGH I low key was crying LIKE YOUR SO INNOCENT AND JUST SO SWEET…

KHARN:

Okay honestly I LOVED YOU like is that surprising??? YOUR AMAZING and you made me laugh sooo much, LIKE YOU AND *BRAITH* ARE THE CUTEST…

(emotionally dies at this point)

DIGWEYN:

Oh my fluffy-muffins. I wanted to give you a hug every single moment of this book LIKE YOU DESERVE LOVE AND PROTECTION… *gives this girl a hug*
(I could write about soo many more characters but I gotta get ready for a dance soon XD and I needa wrap this up)

❤..-CONCLUSION-..❤

I LOWKEY LOVE LOVE LOVE (TIMES A MILLION) This series and just READ IT YALL READ IT. ENJOY the book!

“Swooned?”
“Aye, you know, fainted. It’s a thing ladies do, I’m told.”

This story really dives into the world of the Weavers and Storytellers, and Franklin paints a vivid picture of each piece of land they travel to and the unique people that live there. Gryfelle’s slow decline was SO hard to read. *cries* Her character is so kind and wise, and I just adore her and her selflessness when it comes to Mor and her friends.

Despite the seriousness of so many situations the group find themselves in, there are moments that made me laugh out loud. (“MOR-tifying.”)

“Mourning is for this life. I live for the next.” THIS MOMENT!! *sobs*

This book is a great follow-up to the first one in this series, The Story Peddler. It was suspenseful, and the allegorical piece was quite thought-provoking. Personally, Braith was probably my favorite character to follow, but I enjoyed Tanwen's perspective as well. :)

I’m so glad I reread The Story Peddler right before diving into the sequel. Not because Raider didn’t start out smoothly, but just because it’s been over a year and a half and I forgot things. XD

Anyway! Raider reeaaally upped the stakes from the first book. Finding the cure now matters to Tannie personally, and the consequences of failing are deadly.

If you haven’t read book 1, turn back now—spoilers abound!

WHAT I LIKED:
-More Mor! I love this guy, and his character grew deeper in this book. He still reminds me of Killian from Once Upon a Time... to the point that in one battle scene, I totally expected him to brandish a hook. (Oops.)

-Tannie’s father, Yestin, is 100% awesome. I loved that he and Tanwen didn’t just settle into a comfortable father-daughter relationship automatically, but had to work for it.

-Lots of sailing, exploring, and code-cracking. The Corsyth crew is now literally the crew of a ship, and we get to see more of the world outside of Tir!

-Karlith’s quotes are my favorite. “Mourning is for this life. I live for the next.” She’s such a steady force of peace in any scene where she shows up.

-Meridione was probably my favorite location the crew visited, and now I want to try a maize cake.

-Braith’s chapters are still great! She has so much to carry as the new queen of a kingdom experiencing unrest, but she always spoke and acted with grace.

-I adored how the book pushed into dark situations and found the light.

-A surprise character I won’t give away...!

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
-I was hoping for more of Dray’s story to be carried out... but maybe that’s coming in book 3.

-I was frustrated with the way Tannie treated Brac in the beginning. I mean... she has her reasons. But the poor guy really didn’t deserve being strung along.

-The downside of so much travel is that we don’t get to put down roots in any one kingdom. I would’ve liked to get to know some of the places better, but I suppose the plot didn’t have room for that.

CONCLUSION
Tanwen and the Corsyth crew took me on a thrilling adventure! I loved seeing the weavers band together and discover what they were capable of, even amidst grief.

And after the way it ended... boy, I need book 3 SOON! 4.5 stars.

Wow. I was blown away by book one, how can you top that? I may not know the words to describe it, but this installment certainly did. I was already hooked into the storyline before I started reading, but this brought me even deeper. Franklin’s creative storytelling is simply amazing. There’s really no other way to describe it.

The Story Raider had even more action, more excitement, and more breath holding moments. Yes, I do hold my breath every now and then when reading a book! It was intense at times, in a good way. In this book you get to see a little bit more from a few characters, but the one that intrigued me the most was Naith. Yeah, he’s the bad guy, and while I don’t always like reading the POV of the bad guy, I enjoyed his.

Of course the ultimate thing I want to know is, Who is the Master? You may or may not find out the answer to that in this book. Of course we know who that refers to in real life, and Franklin found such a fun and creative way to display that here. The references are spectacular – the power of the Master, the mention of the Creator, the white light and it’s meaning, and so many more. Oh I just can’t get enough of it!!

I have one complaint. Just one. The ending. I totally was not expecting that ending. AT ALL. My complaint is really that it was such a jaw dropper and now I have to wait until the next release comes out, which is not soon enough for the record. So you see, it’s really not a complaint at all – just me being me 😉

All in all, readers of all ages are going to love this book. I do recommend starting this series from the beginning if you haven’t. There is so much meat in the first book that paves the way for this book that I think it’d be confusing to read them out of order. But I think you’ll find that you will be thankful you did. Yes, it’s that good!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I feel a little bit bad about being the first person to give this less than four stars. It's not a bad rating. The book just didn't quite capture me.

Positives first:
I love all the varied places they travel to. The worldbuilding is pretty cool, and some of the places are so vivid. More weaver abilities are cool and the weaver battles are fun/cool. I do really like this unique magic system. (Even if it's sometimes confusing. I'm very unsure about the rules of this magic system, but maybe I just wasn't paying close enough attention?) There are some really good lines toward the end about life, hope, loss, goodness, love, and sacrifice. There are some characters I really like--Dylun, Wylie, and a character from the end of the last book that I love. I still mostly really like Braith. Can the story be about Braith? Tanwen did mature a bit over the course of the story and got much less annoying. By the end, I actually liked her. One scene almost made me emotional. I was close to tearing up for a moment. I'm curious how things will be resolved, so I'll pick up the last one when it comes out.

There was a plot twist that at first felt irritatingly convenient. But it ended up being different than expected and having another layer, so I decided I liked it. I do have questions about it, and hope it gets a good explanation. Honestly, one of my main reasons for wanting to finish the trilogy is I have so many questions about the magic in this book. Currently that's neither good or bad--it will depend on if they get satisfying answers.

Now...the things I personally didn't like.

It almost feels unfair to mention the same things I disliked from Peddler, because I knew I was getting more of that, but it still was annoying. I got more used to the 1st/3rd switching, but it was still at times distracting. I honestly still found the creature names irritating.

Characters I didn't like... Ughhhhhh. I hate Brac. He's the literal worst--a controlling misogynist (not intentionally, he's just dumb) with a brain full of moldy straw. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to hate him, but I do. I wanted to push Mor overboard for about half of the book. He got less annoying and I liked him okay by the end, but honestly...I think I would have liked him more if he hadn't been in this bizarre Tanwen-Brac-Mor-Gryfelle love...knot? IDK. I'm so sorry, Morwen shippers. I'm struggling to get on board (ha. ha ha.) with this ship. It feels very superficial, but then they have this connection, and it kinda made me roll my eyes.

A couple times I got impatient for the plot to just PROGRESS.

I have many questions about the bizarrely OP villain.

The last line... 😑🙄 The third book is going to have to work hard for me to believe that makes sense.

Sorta? spoilery thing:

I'm unsure the title makes sense??? Yes, they are sort of "raiding" the strands for the cure from around the world. But "The Story Raider," especially paired with that cool cover image, made me think a villain was going to somehow stealing from the characters? Like, somehow messing with their stories or their weaving abilities or something. This is a dumb thing that is probably entirely me, but the title confused me, haha.

PRETTY SPOILERY THING:

Like, I don't name names, but you'll figure it out easily if you've started/are reading the book, so be warned:

I saw a coming a mile away, and it annoyed me. Especially since

EXTREMELY SPOILERY THING:

NO, I'M SERIOUS. HUGE SPOILER BELOW.

OKAY, YOU'VE HAD ENOUGH TIME TO LOOK AWAY (OR CHOOSE NOT TO CLICK SHOW SPOILER IF YOU'RE ON A PC. Why does the spoiler tag not work on the app? It's literally the most annoying thing. Make hide-able spoilers a thing on the app! I know nothing about coding, but surely it's not THAT hard.)

Alright, here it is:

Oh my goodness. That ending. Lindsay, how could you do that to me!? I was not expecting this book to end with such a cliffhanger! Once the book is released, I'll post a full review, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading more of Tannie's story and I can't wait for The Story Hunter!!!! #MoreMor

"Hope is not lost as long as you are willing to fight for it."

*screams*

Pardon the noise, I'm still not over how good this book was. WoAH what a ride. While I get my bearings again, please enjoy my fangirling over the characters:

Tanwen: what a raw and relatable character. Her love for her friends, her caring heart, everything about this girl I admire. And Tannie girl, you need to make a firm decision on who you're gonna be with before I come on over to your world and help you decide XD

Brac: poor guy. can I go hide him on an island somewhere so he's free from all harm and heartbreak? While my love for him is not as strong as before.. I do hope his ending is a happy one in book 3.

Mor: ALIFNBDSJFNAKNF Mrs. Franklin what have you done to this man's life. Like Tannie, I would die for this character. He's been through enough already. ;-; I petition for no more buckets of grief to be poured on his head. He deserves happiness.

Gryfelle: only tears. she walked through fire willingly, in the end saving her friends. i love her.

Digwyn: you did not deserve anything that you experienced, poor Diggy. While I did not quite figure out her age, i did enjoy her, and in the end smiled at her blossoming friendship with Tannie.

ALL of the characters were essential to the story, and while not all made it to the end.. they really were special. Braith, Cameria, Kharn, Naith, everyone.

Content:
-Language: n/a
-Romance: no kissing, hand-holding, near-kisses, forehead kiss, hugging/holding, etc. Nothing inappropriate whatsoever.
-Violence: several characters die, many near-death experiences, many many descriptions of blood and injuries, fighting [recommend for 13+]
-Notes: as part of the Weavers curse, two characters experience seizure-like symptoms.

i have no words.
Lindsay, you are phenomenal.

A fantastic continuation to the fantasy

I fell in love with The Story Peddler when I read it last year. The imagery of telling stories by weaving pictures in the air in living color is just incredible. And the adventure and mystery were thrilling. I have been anxiously waiting for The Story Raider‘s release ever since.

Once again, Lindsay A. Franklin captivated my imagination and transported me to another world. The adventures continue and twists and turns abound. The battles were stunning. There is pain, oh such grief! And hope! And did I mention twists and turns?

Ooh! In the end, we even learn who the “Master” is! Let me just say that I was stunned. Scratch that. I AM stunned! Don’t even try to guess because you won’t be able to.

I don’t want to give any spoilers here so I’m being very careful with what I’m saying. However, I just have to tell you this. At a particularly dismal point for our intrepid band of weavers, Tannie begins to imagine a world, not where good triumphs over evil but a world where there simply is no evil. No pain, no suffering. This gave me such a deep longing for heaven. You know how you know how marvelous it is going to be! And you want to go, yet somehow the cares of this life often make you lose your focus? Yeah. I was startled when I read that part and was flooded with anticipation. What an incredible reminder!! I am so excited and can’t wait!

Yes, I should have taken the time to re-read The Story Peddler before starting The Story Raider. (I always appreciate when an author doesn’t attempt to re-write the previous books in the next installments) and it has been just enough time that a refresher would have been good. Yet most of the things I needed to know came back to me as I read.

Instead of me continuing to gush, though, let me just recommend that if you enjoy compelling fantasy, don’t hesitate to start reading The Weaver Trilogy.

In book two of her Weaver Trilogy, Lindsay A. Franklin, once again brings to life a magical adventure. This story continues and compliments the story of that in the first book. This is a series that will need to be read in order to best understand what is going on. Readers of The Story Peddler, the first book in the series, will be drawn to this story, waiting and wanting to know what will happen next. Although the story is a bit stretched out and slow going and one of the main characters is a bit whiner than some readers may like, this tale is still filled with a beautiful and magical touch that readers will find charming. There is also a bit of a love triangle going on in this story, along with the adventures and pillaging. A theme in the story is strong bonds between family and friends. Readers will be intrigued and drawn to this enticing story and will once again be left wanting more with its cliffhanger ending.

This is the sequel to The Story Peddler. They're set in a fascinating world where storytellers can literally weave together physical stories.
.
I enjoyed this book a lot. The expansion of the world and magic was amazing. And the prose was so smooth at some points it felt like a movie.
Which made me think that this series could make a great animated movie(s).
.
I didn't enjoy so much all the teen drama. Especially the relationship drama. I guess that's what people want now days? I don't know. I just would have enjoyed it more if the characters had been more mature. I guess I should be reading adult fiction rather than YA.
And the end seemed to drag on for two or three chapters too long.
.
I still enjoyed the book. It had a more epic climax than the first one and the continuity seemed better. But I could hardly remember the first one, so take that with a grain of salt.
.
Definitely going to be pre-ordering The Story Hunter.

So, the first book in The Weaver Trilogy was The Story Peddler, and it was amazing in its own right. But, The Story Raider takes all the great characters in The Story Peddler, throws them into a mish-mash of danger and strife, and forces every single one of them to grow in very unexpected ways. Plus, there are new characters added, each of which are completely endearing. The plot has several twists, including something at the end that makes me want to read the end of the trilogy ASAP.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It's not only for fans of YA fantasy. It's for anyone who enjoys well-written characters, surprising plot twists, and engaging story lines.
