Double Vision (Twintuition) Updated
Caitlyn and Cassie’s mom pulls up to a ugly little place with crooked shutters and a over-grown front yard full of weeds. They’ve just driven from Texas. Cassie makes her displeasure well known. Caitlyn tries to be positive, but both aren’t happy when they find out they have to share a bedroom. Cassie says she doesn’t want to share a room with Caitlyn because she’s a slob. Caitlyn says better than sharing one with a neat freak. Cassie gets upset and runs out.
Her mom tells Caitlyn to go after her. Even tho she’s hot, tired, the ride was long, and they’ve been stopped doing the twintuition thing (where they’d guess what the other is thinking when they were younger) Caitlyn doesn’t have any idea where her sister’s gone. Then she spots some shops. Cassie loves nothing better!. A block down some sixth graders are selling baked goods.
One of the girls demand to know who she is and says that she’s never seen her before. Caitlyn introduces herself. Another (nicer) girl says her name is Megan and the not so friendly girl’s name is Lavender. There’s another boy with them (Liam). When Caitlyn goes to give Megan two dollars for the apple strudel, their fingers brush and Caitlyn has a vision of two shimmery versions of Megan, one layered on top of the other. One version was dimmed away almost to nothing,
The top version was much more intense. And instead of looking calm and normal, this Megan was red-faced and sweaty, her blond hair disheveled. She seemed as if she was screaming. Yet, Caitlyn can’t hear anything except a loud buzzing in her ears. She drops the strudel and hurries away. Caityln doesn’t know what happened but it’s not the first time. Caitlyn finds Cassie, mumbles something, and they both go back to the house. Then they work on their rooms. Two days later they start school.
The only up side is that Cassie has convinced herself that the move will be temporary. Cassie waits for Caitlyn to do their ritual when starting a new school. (They hold hands and tell each other they have each other and aren’t alone) but Caitlyn forgets all about it. They twins have different homerooms and their lockers are on opposite sides of the school. Liam whisks Caitlyn away to show her (their) homeroom. Cassie meets a greasy boy named Gabe and Lavender -who won’t help her and calls her a freak-. She then into a cute jock and has a vision.
She sees two versions of the boys hand. One is dim. One is clutching hers. He says his name is Brayden and asks if she’s ok. Cassie apologizes and says she spaced out. He asks her name but Lavender says it’s psycho freak. Cassie asks her does she know her but Megan pulls her away and says they have an English test. Brayden says he has to go study for it because if he doesn’t pass his parents will pull him off the football team. Cassie thinks interesting (that he’s smart and on the football team) but she tells herself she can’t let him distract her. She has to stay focused on making it work for however long she has to be stuck there and why her brain has been shorting out lately.
In homeroom, Liam introduces Caitlyn to Bianca. We find out that what happened with the vision happened 3 other times. Once when she was sick. There was an overlapped vision of her mom. One looking at her in concern. One smiling. Then it happened at the dentist. One of the nurse looking at her. One of the nurse laughing hysterically. Then the last with Cassie was the most intense. It was of Cassie holding a social studies paper with an A on it and some days later it happened. (Cassie was worried about not passing a social studies class). Liam tells Caitlyn San Antonio is where they’ll be going on their class trip (the one they were selling the pastries for).
She finds out about some of the other students. Liam and Bianca aren’t really friends with Megan and Lavender. Liam was just assigned to work with them that day. While Megan is ok, Lavender isn’t. Megan’s family owns a lot of things around there. Then there are the B boys (all on the football team) who are Brayden, Buzz, Biff, and Brent. Gabe tried out for the team but didn’t make it which was surprising because his uncle was a big deal star player back in his day. Lavender comes in and demands to know how she got there before her and when Caitlyn realizes she must have run into her sister (and tells her their twins), Lavender wants to know which one she meet the other day. Gabe hears they’re twins and immediately has a hatred for Caitlyn because her mom *stole* his uncle’s job.
Mrs. Xavier seems to have an interest in the twins too because of twins connection to the supernatural. Cassie is glad Lavender isn’t in her section. There are two green and gold. Her friend Megan March is tho. Cassie realizes it was Caitlyn that was the one that did something to get on Lavender’s bad side. Still, Cassie is caught up in her classes. Cassie thinks Mrs. Xavier is whack and entertains herself in class by counting her fashion mistakes. She also notices Brandon is in her class.
Braydon picks up Cassie’s dropped pen after class and uses it as an excuse to invite her to his football game. She takes the pen but doesn’t touch his hand so the weird vision thing won’t happen. We learn that the first time it happened Cassie was at the mall with friends and grabbed the guys hands behind the counter. His bored expression turns to one of terror. She thinks it’s just low, blood, sugar. The second time it happens she’s with her mom peeling potatoes. One version looks normal and fades. The other she looks freaked out by something. She sees Meagan and Lavender looking at her in the doorway talking and whispering about her.
She runs into Caitlyn, Liam, and Bianca. Caitlyn seems happy to see her. She’s been trying to talk to her but Cassie just pretends to be sleep. Cassie tho gets on her case about people think she’s weird because of whatever it was she did. She in turn snaps on her back about her bad attitude. Gabe shoves past them and calls them losers. Cassie looks at Caitlyn in confusion but Caitlyn says she doesn’t know either. Cassie says keep telling herself that but the only thing she really cares about is getting out of Aura (Texas) for GOOD!
Caitlyn tries to make amends by Cassie by asking her to go to the football game with her. Cassie says she’s not in the mood but her mother says Cassie needs to get a better attitude and get to know her new hometown. She *suggests* she put on her shoes and she’ll drop them off. Its crowded and they end up sitting with Mrs. Xavier. Caitlyn recognizes Megan’s expression and realizes her vision was just of her expressing school spirit. Another vision come true. Cassie sees Caitlyn’s expression and asks her if there’s something wrong. Caitlyn starts to tell her about the weird things that have been happening. But then someone rams into Braydon and he goes down.
Cassie runs to Brayden and sees that his leg looks like it’s twisted at a weird angle. Cassie tells him to say calm. Help with be there in a minute. She notices they’re holding hands just like in her vision. He’s surrounded by adults and Cassie staggers away. When the twins meet up they realize that weird things have been happening to the both of them. Then they compare their experiences. Cassie says she thinks she saw Brayden’s accident before it happened. Caitlyn says the same thing happened to her just now and she tells her about what happened with the bake sale.
Caitlyn says it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It’s kinda cool they can see the future. Cassie thinks it makes them look like side show freaks and hopes it’s a side effect of puberty. At least, they’re going through it together. Caitlyn asks doesn’t see want to know how it works. Then they can change the future like with Brayden. But Cassie turns it into an accusation. Caityln says that’s not what she meant. Cassie says she knows but another time on figuring it out.
Cassie starts not to talk to Caitlyn after this. Caitlyn begins to search the internet for other people like them. Braydon comes to art class with crutches. Lavender offers to pick up one he dropped (eagerly). He speaks to Cassie and she starts to wonder if she really could have prevented the accident. He thanks her for helping him at the game. She says not a problem. Then tells herself again he’s cute but she won’t be there long. Cassie tells her theory to Caitlyn-that their mom isn’t happy and they’ll be back to San Antonio- but there mom comes in the room and tells her there’s no chance their moving back. They’re in Aura to stay. Her job is going *fine* and she’s going to work to fit in with the force and she suggests they do the same at school.
Later in bed, Cassie realizes she’s serious and if she’s stuck there she’ll just have to make it work. She’ll just have to restore her social status. Brayden (she thinks is the only silver lining). She thinks about how Caitlyn said they could use their visions to make things better and what could be better than using them to make themselves *popular*?
Caitlyn with the assistance of Liam finds some sights about extra-sensory abilities. She finds out a family calls the Lockwood’s in British. Then there’s an article about waking visions by touch and something about an old diary found by a guy named Lockwood in a second-hand shop. It happened around his 12th birthday. Caitlyn sends a message Does anyone else know about this kind of precognition? I think my twin sis and I might have the same thing. We’re almost 12 and we’ve been experiencing something similar. But we’re not in the UK; we’re in the US. Please message me with more info.
Gabe stops by the Waters house and says he’s selling raffle tickets and asks if Mrs. Waters is home. Caitlyn goes to get her and when she touches him she gets a vision of him in front of the police station grinning his butt off. Caitlyn tries to tell Cassie about her vision but she tells her later when their not in public. Cassie has dressed cute this day and tries to talk to one of the minions. They just tell her to get her hand off them.
She then approaches the B-boys, and touches Biff’s arm. Nothing happens. Then she touches Buzz and has a vision of him holding a paper with a D on it but she can’t exactly tell him to study. She can’t also go around touching people. She then runs into Liam and has a vision of him bumping into Brent in the lunchroom. His pants fall and he’s wearing super-hero underwear. She walks off. Cassie then goes up to Megan and tells her she heard something funny might happen to lunch today. She tells her to meet (her) by the lunch line. But then things go downhill when Megan says Brent ditched. But then Cassie whispers to Biff and he grins and yanks down his pants. Megan then invites Cassie to sit with her and her friends.
Caitlyn confronts Cassie about the incident but she just blows her off. Caitlyn wonders how far Cassie would go to be popular. The next day, Bianca complains that Liam won’t let her borrow his sweater but Caitlyn lets her borrow hers. In private, Liam thanks her and tells her he ripped his pants and that’s why he has the sweater tied around his waist. Caitlyn realizes her sister must have known and saw this in a vision. This pisses Caitlyn off and she wants to yell at her but realizes this won’t accomplish anything. So, instead she decides to get even!
So, Caitlyn suggests that Cassie hear a hot, pink, shirt that’s identical to the one Lavender wears and turns Lavender frosty with her the rest of the day. Cassie realizes Caitlyn must have touched her and had a vision. There’s a moment when they’re shopping that Lavender actually smiles at Cassie when her dog Amigo is mentioned. She almost forgets about what Caitlyn did but then decides as she’s walking home she’ll have to deal with her and find a way to make living in Aura work. She sees Gabe looking suspicious and follows him to the police station.
Cassie hides and sees Gabe hand another man in a blue shirt and cowboy boots what looks like a lumpy gray brick. Gabe disappears around the corner. Mrs. Waters comes out and the man-Charles Campbell-warns her that they don’t need outsiders there telling them what to do. He says all she has to do is pack her things and high tail it back to the city and he’ll forget all about what he heard about her and her family. Cassie thinks the guy seems unhinged and hopes someone will come out but no one does (Of course not). So, she goes over to her mom.
She slips her hand into her moms and she gets a vision of her mother in the police station with some other officers. She’s upset and tossing things into a cardboard box. There’s a man over her with a badge that says Aura Police Chef. When she’s let go off the vision, Uncle Charles is gone. She and her mom go home.
When Caitlyn checks the site, the thread has been deleted and all the other ones (including hers) under it were deleted. Cassie tells Caitlyn about the vision that looked like her mom being fired. Caitlyn says isn’t that she wants. Cassie says she just doesn’t want her to be upset. Then they both agree that the town isn’t *that* bad. Cassie says she doesn’t want to move back if it means her mom has to give up her dream. So, that means they have to find a way to change the vision. Then she tells her about seeing Gabe and Uncle Chuck. Then Caitlyn tells her it sounds like the vision *she* had. Then say it’s possible the vision won’t turn out to be bad. Maybe their mom was packing up because she got a promotion. The visions have been cryptic and random. Cassie realizes all her visions are turning out to be bad. Caitlyn says all hers have turned out to be good things. They decide to try to question Gabe at the football game, but that’s a day away. Still, it was stormy in the vision and this day is bright so there’s still time. They just have to figure out a plan.
They find out Saturday, their mom will be at the game. Cassie asks him to sit with her at the guy and surprisingly he agrees, Cait sits by them. Cassie gives Gabe some compliments about him being different and he gets it in his head that she won’t mind if he holds her hand. Instead of just playing along, she jerks back and tells him she didn’t say he could touch her. Gabe gets mad, gets up, and says he did feel sorry for her but now he’s glad her mother is gonna get what’s coming to her and she won’t be around much longer.
Cassie and Caitlyn talk their mother into going to the station and they find Uncle Charles in the parking lot. They find out he has a key and was going to go inside either mess something up or steal something and their mother would get the blame because she was suppose to be the last to lock up. The girls are taken back to the game, Lavender confides in them that the real reason Charles got let go was because he was caught embezzling but it was kept hush hush because of his status.
Gabe sees them and screams on them that no one wants them there and they should go back where they came from. Then he whirls on them and Brayden shows up and tells him to back off. The principal hears the chaos and breaks it up. Later their mom confirms that the rumor about him embezzling is true. The mayor will go public with what he knows and Charles might go to jail. The twins agree that their mom should have been told the reason Charles got let go. The twins realize Gabe must have made an impression of their mom’s key when he came by and from that Charles made a copy. The twins wish they could find a way to get Gabe for his involvement but no one will believe them about the visions. Both twins have a vision they were outside looking at a package.
My Thoughts:
It did remind me of a younger version of the SV series. What I was interested in the most was who deleted the thread and what was in the package they saw in their vision (and who it was from). Originally I thought Liam deleted the thread so no one else would see it. I also thought maybe they were being tracked and the message was to lure them out. I thought maybe it was their father who’d left to keep them safe because he was being tracked.
As for Caitlin and Cassie, Cassie left a bitter taste in my mouth. She's one of those girl's that doesn't care who she steps on to get to the top and has a major attitude problem. Even though Megan and Lavender aren't really feeling her at all she'll do whatever it takes to be a part of their group. She's even a little shallow and says the way they dress is enough to be down with them. (SMH) All through the book, she has a chip on her shoulder. Caitlyn was a much easier character to like because she tried to stand up for her friend when it wasn't the "in" thing to do. And I did like Liam because he reminded me a lot of my best friend -loyal-.
I think something else that annoyed me on this read tho was that if the twins hadn’t stopped Charles from breaking in, their vision showed that their mother -whose black- who have gotten fired from the Chief of Police -who it doesn’t say this is white- because of something another white man did. It just makes it sound racist like without any proof that she’d stolen something he would have just let her go like the vision showed. Just a thought I had.
