About the author

Dr. Arno Gruen was born in Berlin in 1923 and emigrated to the United States as a child in 1936. After completing his graduate studies in psychology at New York University, he trained in psychoanalysis under Theodor Reik. Dr. Gruen has held many teaching posts, including seventeen years as professor of psychology at Rutgers University. Since 1979 he has lived and practiced in Switzerland. Widely published in German, his groundbreaking first book to be released in English, The Betrayal of the Self, was published by Grove Press in 1988.

This book is an absolute delight to read. I meant to read a few chapers every few days or so but ended up swallowing it in one sitting 😂

Who is this book for? Anyone who is interested in human nature and sociological processes.

Arno Gruen 90 Page essay is a meditation on obedience both in the individual and in society at large.

Ein wirklich lesenswertes Essay. Die Gründe für erlernten Gehorsam fand ich aber etwas dünn. Es steckt auch in Eltern sehr viel Angst manchmal und Gehorsam ist auch eine Methode um das Gefühl der Kontrolle zu haben. Das wird zum Teil von Generation zu Generation weiter gegeben.
Man hätte mehr aus dem Thema machen können, auch ausführen, was wir durch das Ablegen von Gehorsam noch erreichen könnten als Gesellschaft, als Menschheit. Aber ich stimme dem Autor zu:

Mit teils komplizierten Worten beschreibt der Autor etwas, was eigentlich offensichtlich ist: Wie Einzelne und Kollektive in Gehorsam gefangen sind und woher derselbe kommt. Und doch es wichtig, diese Zusammenhänge herzustellen und zu sezieren: Zusammenhänge zwischen Erziehung, Bindung, Obrigkeit und Abhängigkeit. Ein sehr zu empfehlendes Buch - nicht zuletzt für politische Menschen und Eltern.

Yazarin psikiyatr oldugu goz onunde bulunduruldugunda bu cok makul geliyor. Itaat davranisinin bebek ile anne iliskisiyle basladigini, daha sonra aile icinde ebeveynlerin cocuk uzerindeki baskilari ve itaate zorlayici davranislariyla sekillendigini ileri suruyor. Cocugun ebeveyn tahakkumu sonucunda kendisine yabancilasmasiyla birlikte itaat davranisinin gelistigini ifade ediyor. Kisinin kendi varliginin taninmamasi, anne veya babanin beklentilerini kisinin kendi istegi olarak kabul etmesi ve benimsemesiyle olur. Cocuk varligini tanimayan ebeveynlerle arasinda yasamsal bir bag kurabilmek icin onlarin beklentilerini karsilamak icin itaat etmeye baslar. Gruen, boyle bir kimligin kendisini tehdit altinda hissettiginde ebeveynlerinden aldigi mirasi aktarmak ve savunmak icin her seyi yapacagini ileri suruyor. Konular daha fazla arguman ve ornekle desteklenebilirdi. Bir diger elestirim ise yayinevine. Ceviri ve redaksiyon daha iyi olabilirdi. 3.5/5

Gruen elaborates on the concept of blind obedience. He explains how we identify and sympathize with, and rationalize ourselves as loyal to, the persons who have power over us (or we think they have).

What I learned from the reading was that submission to an authority is often unconscious to us. The obedient tends to sympathize with the powerful instead of opposing him. Hence the structure is self-enforcing.

Many examples Gruen draws from are from the Third Reich. Current political events are only mentioned: Fukushima, refugee crisis, income inequality.

I seem to have a reluctance against psychoanalysis (I did not know Gruen's profession before reading), I currently prefer arguments from evolutionary psychology. That is why I believe that, while on one hand self-alienation might be an important factor and self-reflection might be a way to overcome blind obedience, on the other hand there might be other even more important factors such as group conformity that this book fails to explore.

İtaate Karşı kitabının en kısa özeti itaat olgusuna psikolojik bir bakış açısıdır. İtaatin çocukluktan hatta bebeklikten tohumlarının atıldığını belirtir Gruen. Bu görüşte anne-baba nın çocuk ile olan ilişkisi oldukça elzemdir.
Neden itaatkar bireyler oluyoruz? Bunların kökenleri nedir? gibi sorular tartışılıyor.
Sorular oldukça güzel ancak cevapların daha derin ve detaylı olmasını isterdim. Kısa bir kitap, keşke daha çok yazsaydı Gruen.
Yine de çok sevdiğim bir kitap oldu. İtaat kavramı birçok parametreye bağlı, haliyle bunun psikolojik kolunu okumak bilgilendirici idi. İlgisi olan okurlara tavsiyemdir.

Mükemmel bir kitap özellikle Türkiye gibi bir ülkede kesinlikle okutulması gereken bir kitap çok fazla koru körüne itaatin olduğu “ sağcı aşırılık yalnız ve totaliter liderlerin toplumsal karışıklık dönemlerinde iktidara gelirler” lafından tutunda çok farklı alıntılanması gereken dolu bir kitap her ne kadar sayfa sayısı yetmişle sınırlı olsa da. Biraz dili açık gibi geldi o yüzden yorumlarken zorlandım biraz ama kesinlikle bayıldım. Özellikle itaatin aslında insanın ne kadar fazla kısıtladığını ve itaatin temellerinden gelişmesi ve gelişmenin getirdiği birtakım sıkıntıların insana yansıışını çok güzel ele almış. Bu kitabı aslında daha uzun sürede okumalı ve yorumlarken de oturup okuyan kişi toplumuna göre yorumlamalı bence o zaman maksimum verim alınabilir. Bu adamın adını neden bu kadar az duyurduğunu kesinlikle anlamıyorum gerçekten çok farklı bakış açısıyla özellikle Türk kültürünün aman büyüklerinize itaat edin bakış açısıyla ya da sorgulamayı bakış açısıyla ilerlemesi yahut gelişmesi bu kitap bana gerçekten çok farklı bir felsefe kattı bir nevi stoacı düşünme gibi. Korku seni ne kadar ele geçirirse ki buradaki konu aslında itaat üzerinden ama korkuya da tabii ki değiniliyor itaatsizlik korkusu zalimliğe boyun eğmeye yol açar diyerekten felsefe ise zaten itaat ve korku‘nun insanı ne kadar kontrole aldığını üstün ise bu korkuları üstesinden gelmesini bilen kişi olarak görür. Okurken aslında biraz da bu felsefeye değinildiğini fark ettim. Mükemmel kitap gerçekten her üniversite gencinin bence okuması gereken bir kitap özellikle sosyoloji okuyorsa psikoloji zaten Arno Gruen bir psikolog aslında.

Mir ist die Reduzierung von zum Beispiel der Person Hitler auf NUR eine Gehorsame/ oder sich selbst zum Teil verabscheuende Person zu wenig. Dadurch wird meiner Meinung nach der Holocaust relativiert. Außerdem wird ein ökonomisches Denken, welches es auf jeden Fall gab, komplett ausgeschlossen. Sowieso bei jedem Beispiel, wird Gehorsam als die einzige Triebkraft genommen, das stimmt denke ich nicht.
Interessant fand ich aber diesen Gedanken: In westlicher Kultur wird eine "natürliche" Feindschaft zwischen Kindern und ihren Eltern angenommen. Eltern/ die Gesellschaft schreibt Kindern oft Eigenschaften wie Unreinheit/ Unzuverlässigkeit usw. zu. Diese git es auszutreiben. Interessant ist dabei, das die gleichen Eigenschaften Minderheiten, wie Juden, Sinti und Roma, Kommunisten usw. zugeschrieben werden, um ein Ausschließen zu Mobilisieren.

Is it a prerequisite for the quest for order? or How does dependence on authority determine the form and direction of human actions? It is possible to find answers to basic questions such as:

Gruen, who sees the main condition of human emancipation as finding oneself by getting rid of intellectual addiction/dependency, says that we will continue to be copies of each other with the always memorized attitude displayed. Perhaps this problem was at the core of the existential crises that people felt. The fact that he involuntarily lives a life that does not belong to him...

Einfach ein gutes Buch, das ich parallel zu Heinrich Manns Untertan gelesen habe und das hat auf eine wunderschöne Art und Weise die Ausführungen Manns (durch einen Antiheld) unterstrichen.
Man könnte nun an dieses Buch rangehen und sich denken: „Ist das nicht offensichtlich? Ich bin selbständig und nicht gehorsam.“ Doch auch für diese Art der Menschen hat Arno Gruen eine Antwort. Generell merkt man, wie sehr er sich mit diversen Menschentypen auseinandergesetzt hat. Es ist kaum möglich, seine Worte zu ignorieren, ohne sich dabei seinen Beobachtungen als lebendes Exempel zu unterwerfen (also für den Gehorsam zu sein).
