Sandy Williams writes urban fantasy and science fiction, both with a strong shot of romance. She's a fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope and loves books with high stakes and fantastical settings. When she's not being a bookworm, she loves playing board and card games like Dominion, Quacks of Quedlinburg, Dungeon Petz, etc (but not Goblins because she ALWAYS loses that damn game).

A few years ago I read a trilogy by Sandy Williams called The Shadow Reader . I can't quite put my finger on why that series drew my in the way it did, it was as if the writing style actually sung to me, I know that sounds strange but it did and that series has stayed with me ever since, the storyline was fabulous.

I obviously bought this book because of this author and her writing. I was not disappointed.

Kennedy Rain captured me instantly, I love her personality and the fire in the air she breathes. This entire book captivated me and, again, sung to me. The storyline is absolutely amazing and the characters are very unique in the way they portray themselves, I just love them all and I can't wait to see them all develop as the books progress.

My only gripe is that I have to wait for the next book...

This book is STUNNING

Fourth read: I remembered most of it, but wanted to reread it before the release of the fourth book just to be safe.
Still a quick read and entertaining, on to the second one!

Don’t antagonize the paranorms, Kennedy. They’ll eat you on the way to school.

Don’t show weakness in front of the paranorms, Kennedy. They’re always ready for an easy snack.

Never threaten the paranorms’ safe haven, Kennedy.

Never play poker with a paranorm, Kennedy. They’ll taste the truth on their tongues.

Never pique the interest of a paranorm, Kennedy. It makes you stand out in the flock.

Don’t interrogate the paranorms, Kenndy. They bite when they answer.

Never run from a paranorm, Kennedy. They love a good chase.

Don’t laugh around paranorms, Kennedy. Few things are more delicious than a good sense of humor.

Kennedy Rain’s parents are the owners of The Rain, a unique hotel where paranormals’ magic and aptitudes are nulled. With her parents out of town for a few days, Kennedy is in charge of managing the hotel, even though she fled the family business when she turned 18 and wants nothing to do with the paranormal world. Things start to become complicated when she has to deal with the werewolf Alpha’s daughter wanting to marry an elder vampire on the hotel grounds. Of course, one problem is not enough, and Kennedy also has to deal with financial issues, interspecies politics, and threats to her life, while trying to keep her “normal” human life under wraps (you know, school, normal human job, human friends). As she tries to ensure that the paranormal laws are upheld and that no war is launched before her parents return from their trip, Kennedy also comes to realize that her parents have secrets and that their “vacation” might be more than it seems.

I love the hotel's concept. The Rain is a neutral place where paranorms can come to enjoy a break from their supernatural sides. It has been managed by the Rain family for centuries, and the magic of the treaty protects them from any harm at the hands of paranormals. Vampires can enjoy the sun, werewolves can escape the full moon's pull, and while this sounds like paradise, it brings only problems and frustrations in Kennedy’s life. Sadly, not everyone can enter the hotel. Lehr acts as a “gatekeeper” for the werewolves, and Arcuro does the same for vampires, and only the ones on their approved lists can go to the hotel. The hotel needs to remain a neutral territory, but this only creates more frustration for Kennedy because she can’t help those who need it or those she wants to help unless the leaders have approved them of the werewolves and vampires.

I would have liked to have a little more background information on the hotel’s history and its functioning. The world-building is well done, but basic. I think more details and information would have made the whole hotel concept even more interesting and the story a little more engaging. I cared about Kennedy’s problems, but I would have cared even more with more backstory. The whole concept of a paranormal hotel did remind me a little of The Innkeeper series by Ilona Andrews, so A Void of Magic might be a good fit if you enjoyed this series.

"Clever and cutthroat. I like you, Kennedy."

Kennedy is a great main character; she is strong, determined, and does not back down easily. The poor girl can’t seem to catch a break. From the very first chapter, it’s only problem after problem for Kennedy as she tries to maintain the hotel’s neutrality, prevent a violent conflict, and investigate her parents’ mysterious whereabouts or the hotel’s financial situation. She grew up in the hotel, though, and she knows how to behave around the paranorms. She is not a pushover, and even when she is outside of The Rain, where the paranorms have their abilities, she does not let herself be bullied by them, and I admire that about her. We can also see that she is a good person, and she has strong beliefs when it comes to justice and right and wrong. She is deeply annoyed by the fact that Lehr and Arcuro get to decide who can and cannot stay at The Rain because it means that sometimes, paranorms who would need a stay are refused access by the two leaders, and Kennedy believes in helping the ones who need it, not just playing into the paranorms’ politics.
Thankfully, she becomes even more assertive at the end of the book, and I have high expectations for the second book. I want her to be confident because she is a Rain. She could kick them all out of the hotel if she wished, and she deserved to be respected by the paranormal community.

Blake took another small step forward. He lifted his hand…
…and tweaked my nose.
“You’re cute,” he said. “See you again soon.”

The bastard tweaked my nose!
He’d tweaked it like I was a two-year-old!
I wanted to storm after him, tell him I wasn’t a child. I wasn’t cute. I didn’t have to put up with his crap. He’d left the door wide open, practically daring me to follow.

Blake is Lehr’s sexy second, and let’s just say that he and Kennedy have an intense relationship. There is obvious sexual tension between them, and he seems to be very protective of her at times, but she wants nothing to do with paranorms and refuses to get involved romantically with one of them. Ever. I wouldn’t describe this as a potential hate-to-love relationship, because while Kennedy is annoyed with Blake most of the time, she does not exactly hate him, and he does not hate her. I would say that it’s more of a complicated relationship that has a lot of anger, annoyance, and sexual tension mixed in it. One sure thing is that we will see more of Blake in the next book, and I just hope that their relationship will not magically transform itself into a sweet insta-romance. I love their snarky conversations, their game of push and pull, and their intense moments, and I want more of it, and I am still not 100% sure I am rooting for Blake. He is a good character, but not the best potential love interest, so far.

This is a relatively short book and a quick read. The pace is good, and with all the action and problems Kennedy has to deal with, it’s easy to get sucked into this book and finish it in one or two days. I recommend it if you are looking for a quick read with action, some intrigue and politics, and a touch of humor and sexual tension. The plot is not the most complex or elaborate, to be honest, but I was never bored while reading this book, and it was very easy to read “just one more chapter” until I was done with it.

This was quite a pleasant surprise.

It's a very laid-back urban fantasy type reminiscent of Ilona Andrews's Innkeepers series. We have 22-year-old Kennedy Rain, who's part of the Rain family - a human family tasked with looking after the Rain hotel, which caters almost exclusively to supernatural species. It's in huge demand because it's the only place on earth where the supernaturals are forced to revert to their human forms. Vampires can walk in the sun without burning, werewolves can be exposed to moonlight without going mad, etc.

It sounds cool, but Kennedy actually hates the hotel - she's happy to work on her human life at uni and leave the running of the hotel to her parents. But when they go on a mysterious holiday, they leave it in her hands - and things very quickly start spiralling out of control.

While I like Kennedy, I wish she were more assertive. Actually, she needed to be a LOT more assertive - a lot of supernaturals felt like they could walk all over her, and I wanted to scream at her, "You're a RAIN! Flex it!" Luckily, she starts doing that more near the end of the novel.

The plot is low-key for the most of the novel. I actually couldn't tell you mostly what happens, but I was never bored. There's a dark twist about 3/4 of the way through which massively ratchets up the tension, too, in case you were afraid it trundles along without any stakes.

There's the barest hint of who might be a future hero, but no romance really. More coming soon, hopefully. I'm excited for book two!

This is the first book in the Kennedy Rain series and its a very interesting setup . Kennedy is the heir to her family's hotel which oddly is the only place on Earth where those with supernatural abilities can feel human. Werewolves can escape the dangerous call of the moon and Vampires can once again enjoy their long, endless existence that can often lead them to madness or even having the desire to walk into the sunrise for example. A treaty has been in place for hundreds of years protecting the Rain family but now Kennedy's parents are on vacation and it looks like someone is dead set on taking the hotel out of the Rain families hands even if it means war !
I found it easy to sympathise with Kennedy as she's at college, trying to keep a roof over her head and have some semblance of a normal life. All whilst she's knows that eventually she will have to go back to run the hotel that means so much to the paranorms who vie to stay there. Kennedy knows how cut throat and dangerous these creatures can be and has no illusions about them anymore. With debts seemingly piling up out of nowhere and a wedding that would threaten the flimsy peace between the paranorms Kennedy blunders quite literally from one crisis to another all while knowing she cannot really trust anyone.
At times I found Kennedy a bit annoying but I cannot fault her ability to keep going and I did like that she truly cared and refused to simply give in. I thought the situation (tiny spoiler) with a Vampire who seemed capable of feelings reminded me in many ways of Stefan from the Mercy Thompson series although I hasten to add that this book and the situation felt wholly unique. I found myself eagerly turning the pages and look forward to more but have to point out that as this ends there are no concrete answers so if you abhor cliff hanger endings you have been warned.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

My English review

I loved the Sandy Williams faes series and was very curious to discover the first volume of this brand new series. I must say it was a very nice surprise!

Kennedy grew up in a very unusual hotel: when paranorms go inside, they become like humans. It’s a very popular hotel, as you can imagine! But after something happened when she was younger, Kennedy ran away from this life. But when her parents go on vacation, she finds herself in charge of the hotel once again, and it won’t be easy. Why? The employees seem to hate her, the debts seem to be piling up at the hotel and the girl she hated in high school, the daughter of the werewolf alpha, has decided to get married at the hotel to a member of her enemy clan: the right-hand man of the vampire leader. This is a very big problem for Kennedy who has no intention of accepting!

And then there’s Blake, the werewolves’ right-hand man, who is sexy as hell and determined to turn our little Kennedy on his head. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

There is a lot going on in this novel and I was curious to find out the whole story. I actually had a hard time letting go of it until the end. A lot of points were initiated in this first volume and I will be waiting with great anticipation for volume 2! Kennedy is a character I loved following and I’m sure she has many surprises in store for us. I would also like to learn more about Christian who is a very enigmatic character!

First, thank you to Sandy Williams for sending me a ARC and to NetGalley for also approving me for an ARC as well! I am so grateful!!!

I am always so mad at myself when I start a new series when only the first book is out, but ohhhh did I enjoy it!

Just like with other books I have read by Sandy Williams, this one did not disappoint! I can only assume the next one will be even better.

The premise of the story is very unique, revolving around a hotel located on property inside of a void. There are a few key things that happy that feel important that I believe will carry over into book 2. First, the wording of the treaty. It seems like a lot happens around trying to find it, then once she reads it, it kids of fades into the background. (For understandable reasons!)

Second. . . Is not really a think but a who! Christian is yummy and everything I want in a good love interest. However, this is pure speculation. All signs lead to Blake, I am just NOT a fan. Not sure if it is just me or if we are suppose to have mixed feelings about him.

Anyway, this is not a love triangle. In face; there is no “love” in this book. Before you read that and decided to dismiss reading this book, know I am a HUGE romance reader. If it does not have a love story, I typically don’t even want to read it. But you have to know Williams and her magical ability to draw it out.

Over all. I loved it and I would recommend reading it ASAP!!

Human imperfect like the heroine, this book surprised me and gave me the adrenaline shot I usually get with the books I love more (those where you are so into it your moods change with the story).
It’s not perfect, but so much my alley I can’t believe I have to wait a year for its sequel.

3.5/5.0
I absolutely adore Ms. Williams writing style. Every story I have read of hers is engaging, addicting, impossible to put down and thoroughly fun to read! This first of a new series is no exception. There were a couple of glitches, however, that kept it from the high star rating I'm sure future installments will attain. It's a great story but with a bit of a shaky foundation.

First, there is so little understanding in many of the aspects that it leaves the reader constantly confused and somewhat frustrated. For instance, why does Kennedy hate the hotel so much? There are constant references but no real depth of understanding. Also, what the heck is up with her parents? Gone without an explanation? No contact to speak of, no help when needed... just doesn't make any logical sense. There is also no understanding of the reason for Kennedy's rocky relationship with Nora, Sullens, and almost all the other paranormals. It's sketchy on her "normal" roommates, job, and life, as well. This lack in understanding the reasons underneath so many actions becomes extremely frustrating, even as we race from one crisis to the next.

Then, there is the full-stop ending (worse than a cliffhanger). This story doesn't resolve ANY of the threads! It just quits.... midstream and mid-story. Yes, it is the beginning of a series, but unless the author is planning to publish the next installment within the next two or three months, not allowing for some closure in at least a couple of threads while keeping the overall arc running just doesn't work on so many levels.

Still, the bones are fantastic, the characters extremely intriguing and the promise for a fabulous series still stands. So, I'll be waiting (im)patiently for the next book soon!

The Rain Hotel is the only null zone on the planet. It is (*in appearance*) a safe heaven for paranormals who need to escape, at least temporary, from their magic, and the Rain family has run it for centuries protecting the secret of paranorms' existence.
Kennedy Rain, however, doesn't want anything to do with it. So bad that an ill-timed vacation has forced her back among the paranorms' world, with all its secrets and feuds. So much worse that she has found herself amid a paranormal mess, with the insufferable daughter of the local Alpha wanting her to host her wedding unconcerned by the war that will spark from it, a missing groom (who is, btw, the scion of the most powerful vampire around), two unreachable parents with mysterious whereabouts, and tons of secrets.
She was hurting, and I wanted to fix it. I wanted to fix the whole paranormal world, but every time I tried, it blew up in my face. That’s why I’d stayed away from The Rain. That’s why I didn’t want to have anything to do with it now. Some things couldn’t be fixed.

This book is UF at its finest and totally blew me away.
I loved everything about this, including but not limited to:
- the interesting and well-crafted world-building
- the beautiful storytelling and flow of the story
- the unpredictable storyline full of twist
- our oh-so relatable heroine
- the Rain Hotel staff
- the secrets
- the reasons that kept Kennedy away from the paranormal world and the choices she made that entangled her with it again
- the believable hint of romance that connects Kennedy to Blake
- the starcrossed relationship between Nora and Jared
- all the unanswered questions that I hope will be sated in the next book(s)

3.5 out of 5 stars

❤️ Original concept
❤️ Some great characters
🚫 Didn't find it engaging
🚫 No real romance

The concept of a hotel where the power of supernatural creatures is nullified is really interesting. Here, vampires and werewolves can take a break from their supernatural side (and its weaknesses). However, I wouldn't like to find myself in charge of managing such a place. Unfortunately for Kennedy Rain, she has the week from hell when she finds herself in this exact position.

Her parents managed to keep the peace for decades, but Kennedy isn't having the same luck.

I loved Kennedy's character. She has a strong sense of right and wrong and combined with being both passionate and stubborn, she is "pleasantly reckless". I also really liked Nora, Deagan, and Jared. They have great potential to be very interesting characters. I didn't really connect with the potential love interest Blake. I don't usually have this problem, but the majority of the time I just thought he was an @ss.

You definitely shouldn't go into this book expecting romance. Yeah, there's some chemistry between the characters, but that's it. I really hope we get more in the sequel.

I'm stuck between rating this 3 or 4 stars. I can't pinpoint any fault, but I just didn't find it very engaging. It felt kind of... lacklustre. My general response was meh. I didn't not like it, but I also didn't love it. Even the ending didn't leave me excited for more. It felt a little flat to me.

Would 100% recommend!!

I received a copy of this wonderful book via NetGalley (thank you Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op). All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed the world that Sandy has created for her Kennedy Rain series. Like her other series, it’s clear she likes to steer away from the cliche worlds that her paranorms are usually found in and really pulls it off.

I loved seeing kennedy’s development throughout the book, thought the dialogue between characters is fun and engaging, and there is a definite slow-burn tension developing between Kennedy and Blake which felt natural and unforced. Steamy too, I love me an alpha!

The concept of the hotel reminded me of Ilona Andrews Innkeeper Chronicles so if you loved those then definitely give this book a read.

So engaging that I read this in one sitting! Cannot wait for the next in the series!

Title: A Void of Magic
Author: Sandy Williams
Publication date: July 27th, 2021
Series: Kennedy Rain #1

Summary: They trusted her to keep the peace between the paranorms. They made a mistake.
Kennedy escaped the family business when she turned eighteen. Now, an ill-timed vacation pulls her back to The Rain Hotel, the only known null zone on the planet. It’s a place where vampires can see the sun rise and werewolves can avoid the lure of the full moon. And it would be the perfect place for a paranormal wedding…if the bride wasn’t the local alpha’s daughter and the groom the scion of a vicious master vampire.
With a sexy werewolf determined to sabotage the wedding and dark forces threatening The Rain, Kennedy’s life is thrown out of balance when she’s forced to confront a past she swore to avoid. Ultimately she must choose: will she maintain the stability of the supernatural world…or will she destroy it.

Review: I really like Kennedy, I totally understand why she doesn't like being there. I love how as a human she stands up to the paranormal. I do not understand her parents leaving without a specific date to come back on. I would never agree to something without specific dates. It would just drive me crazy. I am pretty sure I'm in love with Blake. Honestly I love 90% of the characters in this book. My only question is why did the author wait for the last 30 minutes of the book to just absolutely demolish my heart. I'm so ready for Bound by Bloodsong!

I am glad that I got a chance to read an eArc of this book from NetGalley (Thank you to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op). All thoughts and opinions are my own. The writing I loved as it carried the story and the plot. And for the length of the novel, I am happy that I could read it in a day. I didn't want to put the book down. I loved the plot throughout the story. It kept me wanting to find out what would be happening next. Seeing the character relationships develop through the story made me interested in what would happen between them. It didn't go in the direction that I thought it would go in. I am excited to read the next book in the series to find out what happens next.

I requested an ARC based on the cover and the blurb and I was not disappointed.

Warning, this is the first book in the series so although it is fast-paced with a lot going on, there is no resolution - there is definitely a To Be Continued ...

Kennedy Rain's family own the Rain Hotel, it is situated in an area of null magic which means that paranormals staying at the hotel are not bound by their normal limitations (eg vampires can walk in the daylight, werewolves aren't forced to change at the full moon etc). Kennedy hates the hotel and the paranormal world, she's spent as much time as possible avoiding the hotel, but her parents have gone on holiday and asked her to look after things.

Things are going badly, the paranormal staff hate her, the hotel is being inspected for the first time in living memory and Kennedy's arch-nemesis from school, Nora, the daughter of the werewolf Alpha has demanded that the Rain Hotel host her wedding, to the vampire leader's second-in-command - no way that's going to end well. Add in the werewolf second-in-command who isn't used to humans resisting his authority, parents who won't answer the phone, a werewolf Princess with entitlement issues and rising hostilities between the paranormals and Kennedy is fighting fire on all sides.

I really enjoyed this, there are enough ambiguities about some of the paranormals to keep you guessing. I would love to read the second book in the series and look forward to it.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I hadn’t read this author before, but the blurb on this intrigued me. I started reading, and I was immediately drawn into the story. I admit that at times I really was annoyed with Kennedy because she kept going on about not wanting to be in the inn and not wanting to be in the paranormal world. Other than that, though, I was drawn into the mystery of why everything kept going wrong for her, what’s up with the financial situation, and where Christian fit into everything. At the end, we have a few answers and a lot more questions. This was a well-written, interesting universe, and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s coming up next. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Loved this book! Thank you Netgalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the arc. I thought the synopsis sounds interesting and completely different than anything I have seen. The book starts a little slow, but picks up super fast and I couldn’t put it down. It is a very fast read and really kept my attention throughout it. The characters were fun and honestly was just such a great book. I can’t wait until the next one! I had one of the authors other series on my tbr, but never got around to it. Definitely going to prioritize it now!

Kennedy Rain and her family have run the Rain Hotel for ages. The only place the paranormal can go and void their magic. She thought she could get away and lead a normal life. Not happening. Just found another favorite series! This is a new, unique storyline that I couldn’t put down. Sucked me in from page one and held on the whole way through. Looking forward to more in this series!

It is wonderful when you find a series that is new to you and meets or exceeds your expectations. That is the case for me with "A Void of Magic." Imagine a world where the paranormal and human world are separated by a thin thread and the balance of power is held in check by a 'neutral zone' so to speak. That neutral zone is the Rain Resort and Hotel.

For years Kennedy Rain has attempted to separate herself from the paranormal world. She rarely comes home to the hotel her parents run for supernaturals and all she wants to do work her mundane job and finish college. However, when her parents take an extended vacation, she is forced back into the world she has purposeless avoided.

It seems that Nora, a were woman from Kennedy's high school days has come to the hotel and basically demands that she allow her wedding to be held at the hotel. Kennedy is not one to buckle down to the demands of others and considering that this girl made her life miserable in high school she doesn't have an incentive to grant her request but when she discovers who Nora is about to marry her response is not just 'No' but 'Hell no!' If Kennedy allows this wedding to be held at Rain it will have an explosive effect in the paranormal community.

To make matters worse, Kennedy discovers that her parents have been keeping secrets from her about the hotel. Creditors are calling, an inspector is threatening to close the hotel if she doesn't start making some repairs and the staff is less than cordial towards her. It also seems that one of Nora's pack mates,Blake, has discovered her plans to wed and is now threatening Kennedy if she doesn't cancel the wedding. Of course, this handsome and devious were arouses something in Kennedy she is most definitely trying to avoid.

There is a lot of deception, subterfuge and attacks Kennedy will have to deal with and if that is not enough the heartbreaking ending is enough to leave even the most hardened reader in tears. Kennedy is unsure at this point who she can trust and book two promises to be epic! I for one cannot wait.

Five years ago Kennedy ran away from the Rain after angering the alpha werewolf and vampire by harbouring unsanctioned paranorms during their crazy periods e.g. the full moon. Now she’s back to cover as her parents go on vacation, but discovers all is not what it seems at the Rain and juggling school, a job, a love sick vampire and werewolf - with the consequences of that love, Kennedy doesn’t think things could get any worse.

Honestly, I loved this book. It’s very much going into the NA genre and so has that easy read writing style. I generally couldn’t put this book down and was itching to read it whilst I was in work. The plot was so good and I loved how the romance is slow burning, so the focus was more on the world building and the mysteries that Kennedy has to solve.

This book took me back to why I fell in love with reading and why paranormal romances will always be my favourite. It sort of reminded me of the Morganville Vampires series, with this hidden place for paranormals. The whole concept of the hotel is really interesting and I can’t wait to find out more about the treaty.

I have nothing bad to say about this book because I loved every part of it. The writing was just amazing and I loved all of the characters- especially Jared with his quirky personality. This is one of those books that could never be too long. I feel like I could read a million pages and not be bored.

Overall, if you love a good paranormal book, this one is definitely for you. I’m literally itching to get my hands on the second one because I need to know what happens and the little preview chapter has me craving more. It’s definitely a book I’ll be rereading constantly in the future.

Thank you so much to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for a chance to read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Kennedy is a terrific character- like all of Sandy Williams' other female characters. I love The Shadow Readers series... and this brand new series is just as interesting. I like the sexual tension between her and the male character Lehr. The dialogue is wonderful and funny. Non-stop action keeps the book moving. A great read.

Thanks to the publisher for the ARC.

A Void of Magic is the first in a fantastic new series. Kennedy Rain is human, and her family runs a hotel located in the only known null zone, where vampires and werewolves become human again, and a stay there is highly sought after by the paranormals. After escaping the hotel to attend college, Kennedy is drawn back to cover for her parents in their absence. Of course nothing goes right and she is caught in the middle of a dispute between vampires and werewolves regarding a wedding, and then things become weird and dangerous as she uncovers questions about what her parents have been doing and encounters danger from unknown sources - and that’s on top of the vampires and werewolves giving her trouble. Kennedy is a strong and determined young woman, but facing up to powerful paranormal beings might be more than she can handle. She has to make up her mind whether she’ll leave everything behind for a normal life, or stay and embrace the life that is her heritage. The story ended with a number of questions unanswered and I can’t wait to read the next book to get those answers and see what happens next.
My thanks to the author for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
