Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

Got to say I love this condensed version of the Dragon Ball Super. I have watched the series and the movies, but this is my favourite medium. It starts after the Boo saga, to the introduction of Lord Beerus, and Goku reaching a power level he never knew existed. The fights and artwork are great, and a lot of the time wasting is cut out. There are a couple of differences, the Resurrection F sage is mentioned but does not take place in these books. They jump straight to the tournament between Universe 6 and 7. Another thing is Goku does not go Blue in this book. He does not lose his “God” form, so he stays Red. What to say all the action without the time wasting.

DRAGON BALL IS BACK DRAGON BALL IS BACK DRAGON BALL IS BAAAAAACK!!!!

The Dragon Ball saga ended in 1995 with Dragon Ball Z after 42 volumes. Akira Toriyama’s bestselling title left behind a legacy as one of the most original, popular, influential and genre-defining comics in the world. Since then it’s only gotten more fans through the anime, the movies, and computer games, showing that there’s still an appetite for these characters and their stories.

Now, 22 years later, the official sequel and continuation of the saga was published this week: Dragon Ball Super, Volume 1. (I know Viz was publishing the English translation chapters on their site for free last year but I hate their format - the text and pictures are too scrunchy - so I waited for the collected edition instead.) Toriyama is no longer drawing it, having hired a new artist in Toyotarou, but he’s still in the driving seat, writing the storylines. And I’m pleased to say he’s still got it - Dragon Ball Super IS super!

Some time has passed since Son Goku defeated Boo and saved Earth. But a new threat has emerged: Beerus, the God of Destruction, who brings with him new knowledge of a multiverse, new Dragon Balls, and a new level of Saiyan power: Super Saiyan God! Now, Goku, as well as the rest of the Dragon Ball cast, find themselves in a new tournament, battling against an array of new powerful foes for the fate of the multiverse!

It’s worth noting that the original Dragon Ball series was first a manga and then got adapted into an anime; this time around Dragon Ball Super started out as an anime and has been adapted into a manga. And this is my only problem with the book: I haven’t ever watched any of the Dragon Ball anime, it’s never appealed to me; my love of Dragon Ball stems purely from the comics - I know I’m in the minority on this one. But I think that’s why the story in the early part of the book is rushed in places. Some of the scenes are a bit choppy with notes from the editor saying things like “Check out the Battle of the Gods movie to see how we got here”. What?! I don’t want to have to watch a movie to see what happened from one scene to the next - that should all be in the book! Anyway, that’s my only criticism.

I loved seeing all the characters again: Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Bulma, etc. and the expansion of the Dragon Ball universe with new universes, new Dragon Balls (the size of planets!), and new power levels was excellent. The new villains are cool - Beerus and his brother Champa look like Ancient Egyptian cat gods - and I like that there are new Saiyans, a new Freeza-type challenger, and I can’t wait to see what Mr Monaka - apparently the only fighter in the universe more powerful than Son Goku - can do.

Toriyama may not be drawing it this time around but if no-one told me that I wouldn’t have noticed - Toyotarou’s art is identical to Toriyama’s! The charming, familiar humour is there - Bulma’s meeting with new character Lord Zuno was funny as was the universe anthem, Beerus and Champa’s food battle and the IQ test all the fighters had to pass before the tournament (poor Majin Boo!) - and the story structure is similar with the hunt for the Dragon Balls and the tournament. The fight scenes remain the centrepieces of the story - Dragon Ball is at its best when it comes to the fight scenes because at its core it’s a martial arts comic and no other title does it better. In all the ways that matter, this is definitely and recognisably Dragon Ball.

A must read for all Dragon Ball fans, as well as martial arts comics fans and anyone looking for a great manga, Dragon Ball Super is a very welcome return for this classic title. I really enjoyed it and I’m delighted we’re getting new Dragon Ball comics for a new 21st century audience as well as long-time fans - looking forward to more!

EN I haven’t watched or read anything about Dragon Ball since the anime series from the '90s.

It was fantastic to reunite with Son Goku again! I definitely need to catch up, as so much has happened in the story between then and now.

Dragon Ball Super sticks to the winning formula that made this franchise a massive success, blending action, humor, and emotional moments seamlessly.

--

Nota 7 (3,5 stars)

I want to say I loved this as a fan of the original series way back in the day, but the new direction it takes is so goofy that I sometimes had a hard time wanting to accept the "expansion" envisioned here.

I wasn't a fan of the whole "go-watch-the-movie-or-anime-to-know-what-happened" that was slid into some parts. I sort of wish this manga actually adapted the whole anime (series and movies) instead.

But I won't lie that it was fun to see all the iconic heroes and villains back into play with new ones who have really intriguing but odd personalities!

Yours truly,

Having read both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, I was expecting something in a similar vein to its predecessors and, in many ways, this is exactly how I pictured the series continuing. However, there is a lot more humour here than I remember from the other two entries, with goofiness being written all over DBS. At times, it can dip into the realm of being a little too whimsical, making many scenes which should hold weight less impactful. Like usual, Toriyama keeps pulling new Saiyan forms and the names are getting less and less memorable as they keep stacking up. Regardless, no matter what hair colour the Saiyan's are rocking and who they are going up against, you're always in for a good time with Dragon Ball.

Wow, this was a nice surprise. I've heard mixed things about Super but I really dug this.

So what's happening the the world of dragon ball after buu is defeated? Oh yeah, Goku is trying to make enough money so Chi-Chi doesn't try to kick his butt. The first half of this book actually covers battle of the gods storyline from the movie. It speeds it up a bit, only hitting major notes, cutting out some big moments, and giving us a quick glance of the world it's trying to set up. The 2nd half os the start of the new tournament saga which has Goku and friends vs 5 other warriors for the fate of their universe.

Good: The art is pretty solid and this is by a new guy, so that's nice. The story is simple yet charming, and hearkens back closer to the Dragon Ball days of humor which is a huge plus. I haven't reviewed DBZ manga on here yet, but I grew up on it both in manga and anime, and it takes itself far too serious sometimes. So I like the lighter approach here. Some great comedic moments mixed in with some cool fights and setting up a bigger universe is all a plus for me.

Bad: The covering of the gods movie is kind of meh. It's not horribly done but it does rush it and I'm glad I saw the movie before reading this. Not to mention they just skip out on the freeza movie all together haha.

Overall, a 4 out of 5. I really enjoyed this and wanna pick up the next few volumes. I don't have much time these days to sit and watch a 90+ episode anime so nice to just sit back and read a really fun manga volume in 20 minutes.

This book was so amazing! We get the continuation of DBZ and its mostly the first few chs referencing the events of the movies with Battle of Gods referencing Beerus and then Freeza is there with Resurrection F, and we have the Red and Blue hair transformations which is super! This volume mostly deals with the fact that we have Champa, Beerus's twins who have a tournament for shifting earth as Uni 6 doesn't have one and this is where we get into the multiverse saga with Dragon Ball and its well done. Champa and Vados (his angel assistant) are funny and have good characteristics and come off really well and the tournament starts off well! Goku vs Botamo who is this bear like thing and his fight is so funny, the way Goku defeats him and then comes Frost, whose basically Freeza like and his fight with Goku unleashing his true form just wow! Also we learn of Super dragon balls which sets up a whole new mythology! Great to see Toriyama writing with a new artist in Toyotarou and its perfect, really well done and Goku and the Z- nay Super-warriors are back!

Quick review: New material generally satisfying for the nostalgic fan, marred only by the passages that account for the intervening canonical film expansions, which throw off this volume’s pacing, and the lame humour including panties, boob, nipple and pants-wetting gags. Those have always been part of the Dragonball experience, though.

I did not plan to read this series until I spotted it in my new public library’s teen graphic novel shelf.

SO damn happy I finally read this..

I'm going to be honest here, all this time I wasn't reading it cuz after all these years I was 100% sure I'm gonna hate it and that the only reason is back is to milk DB some more.

But dammit this is SO good. Brings back all the damn memories and it's in the same damn style and everything. I love it and I want it to go forever. Thank the Supreme Kais that I finally said fuck it and let's see if it's any good.

I don't even want to tell you what's happening here. You liked DB as a kid? READ IT. That's all.

The story is fun and ridiculous. The replacement artist is great. But the pacing of the story is awful. It's pretty obvious that the manga is now second fiddle to the anime.

I'm so disappointed. I loved Dragon Ball and Z so much, and I heard so much about the lore of Super that I was sure I'd love it.

The details are sparse and rely on anime and movie knowledge that I don't have. Characters just change into these new forms of super saiyan without the buildup, characters defeat some kind of resurrected Frieza off page in a side note. I'm so confused.

I don't plan to continue. I guess I'll have to watch the anime if I want to know anything.

Hmm. On the one hand, I'm glad to see more of Goku and co.; on the other, this new story seems redundant. The new adventures are very much like the old ones, just revamped a bit and with new characters. Don't get me wrong, Beerus and Whis are very interesting, somewhere between funny villains and mighty neutral powers, but I liked the nostalgic goodbye scenes of the DBZ and here we don't see even a hint of that happily ever after.

While Toyotaro might be a good artist, he's not Toriyama. When I was reading DB and DBZ I had foolishly thought that drawing in DB style was easy - but this volume has clearly shown that this is not the case; on the contrary - Toriyama's style is nearly impossible to copy and completely impossible to top. Toyotaro's not bad, but he's nowhere near Toriyama's level of artistry. The characters just don't have that level of expression, grace, and even proportions that were the highlight of the DB and DBZ manga - and, for me, this results in a significantly diminished emotional attachment and payoff.

I love Dragon Ball in all its iterations, from growing up both watch Z and Kai, later watching the more adult OG series and having actually watched all of Super twice I should’ve known this would’ve been nothing but great in my book. Ashamedly I have to admit even growing up I was never much of a manga reader and only recently have I found a growing interest, but do to that fact and my ever growing love to absorb any and everything from this fantastic series, I can’t wait to see what comes next.

While I’ve been a Dragon Ball fan for decades, this is my first time reading the manga.

I’m also reading this after having watched the show so it’s a nice recap for me. The story is pretty close to what we see in the anime and in the first DBS film, but a critique is that watching the film is necessary to completely follow the story in the manga.

Toyataro is a pretty good artist and I can see why he was chosen to inherit the pencils.

This first chapter covers from the start of DBS until the fight between Frost and Goku. So far, no major surprises and I’m enjoying it.

Very poor. Toyotarou does a good job of doing Toriyama's art style, but the story doesn't work. It starts out very disjointed, referring the reader to either an anime or a stand-alone volume of manga (it's not clear which); then apparently skipping some events to Vegeta and Goku training, then to a tournament between universes.

The different contestants are amusing, in the normal quirky Toriyama style, but that's really the only good bits about the book. I'm not going to read any more of this series.
