I had a bit of a time getting into this story, there are a lot of characters, and kept of reading so I could find out how they all tied together. The ending surprised me and along with the non-stop action, I was quickly page turning. There are dogs, stealing newspapers and bones, and cats with nine lives, along with families that aren’t really speaking, and then secrets that have been long held begin to drop. Some of the characters are really not what they appear, and others I judged wrong, and I needed to get to the answers here! There are soon to be two more books to come in this series, where we can move on with these characters.
I received this book through Celebrate Lit, and was not required to give a positive review.
I don’t read a lot of cozy mysteries. Not because I have an aversion to them. It’s more that I just don’t have enough time in my schedule to add another genre to what I am reading. When I can slip a cozy into my reading schedule, though, I enjoy it. What’s not to love? A somewhat clueless amateur sleuth, best friends, a quirky cast of characters, and there’s usually a hint of romance thrown in there.
The Vacant House meets all of the above criteria. And, bonus, this is the first in a series from Tamara G. Cooper so readers know they’ll get to hang with this crew again.
As Sophie O’Brien tries to solve the escalating, and seemingly connected, crimes happening in her neighborhood, Burke Maguire (law enforcement officer and Sophie’s former flame) comes to the rescue. Again and again.
At times I found Sophie somewhat bumbling for someone who dreams up mysteries, but it makes for some humorous situations, not to mention makes her relatable and likable. I also felt it took too long for Burke to use the words “open investigation.” For about three quarters of the book, it seems he’s telling her everything and then he starts using the phrase.
Despite those couple small hiccups, Cooper does an excellent job of keeping readers’ attention with so much happening. True friends stand beside Sophie, townspeople become suspicious of her, and Sophie herself must not only figure out who-done-it, she’ll also have to resolve her past with Burke. I will definitely be watching for Sophie and company’s next adventure.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated and all opinions are 100% mine.
First of all, this is a cozy mystery. There is nothing inappropriate in the book as far as language and situations. There is some non-gratuitous violence as well as some situations that are referenced. Church is mentioned, but I don't see anything overtly Christian in this book.
I wanted to like this book. I saw many mystery elements that were included, and some were executed well. However, there were way too many plotlines and disconnected action, in my opinion. I felt like a confused observer on the outside of the story in spite of the well-executed first-person narrative.
I did like Yoda the cat. I just wish Sophie had been a bit more likable and relatable. I saw many red herrings, but unfortunately, I didn't care that much about who ultimately did it.
While I'm sure the author has the talent for spinning a good tale, I hope in future novels that she describes the characters in such a way that I am able to connect with them on a more authentic level. I really wanted to like Sophie, but I struggled to enjoy her antics. I longed to know her more.
As this author is new to me, I was not sure what to expect when I picked up my book. As always, I stressed, will I be able to write a positive review or not! I have to say that after reading one chapter, I knew I was in for an enjoyable ride, although somewhat rocky, travelling alongside Sophie, the main character.
The action and mystery commenced immediately, with unexplained murders, break ins and missing animals. All fingers are pointed at Sophie! Why?! She doesn't seem to know! As a mystery writer herself, Sophie is completely puzzled as to why anyone would accuse her of such crimes. My attention was grabbed and I was drawn in by these somewhat humorous accusations. Sophie was so realistically and well described that I was immediately drawn into her life filled with ups and lots of downs, as well as funny situations! The police officer who was investigating just happened to be a former flame adding complications to the investigation of the crimes.
The plot teasers kept me glued to the page as the author creatively used humor to enhance the mystery! What a great talent Tamara Cooper has! The many twists and turns kept me glued to the page. It was a difficult task to put this book down!! Every page was packed full of humor and action. I would be giggling and then in the same breath be shocked and completely blown away by the next surprise event.
I must admit that the style of writing was unusual to me, however, this book was one that I highly recommend. It just proves that when we spread our wings and read new authors, it can result in a positive experience. I now am eagerly awaiting Tamara's next creation! This book was a gift. The thoughts and opinions expressed are honest and my own.
Tamara G. Cooper's The Vacant House immerses readers in a web of intrigue as it follows mystery writer Sophie O’Brion. Wrongly accused of murdering her neighbor and former teacher’s cat, Sophie soon unearths a trove of hidden secrets that only lead to more questions. When her neighbor goes missing, Sophie’s curiosity propels her into the investigation, even as her former flame, now local policeman Burke, is also on the case. With all evidence pointing to Sophie, the suspense builds: Did she commit the crime? Is her neighbor truly missing? Or is Sophie being set up?
As the first installment in the Sophie O’Brion Mysteries series, Cooper has crafted a riveting debut. The story grips the reader from the start, keeping them on edge and eager for answers alongside the protagonist. Cooper's exceptional writing, particularly her use of descriptive language, enhances the narrative. For instance, in the opening chapter, she writes, "The fierce warrior rose up inside me, and I tossed the covers, grabbed my robe, slid my tired feet into slippers, and shuffled across my bedroom." Such vivid imagery not only illustrates everyday activities but also deepens our understanding of Sophie's character, fostering a strong connection between the reader and the story. Throughout the book, the constant emergence of unsolved mysteries keeps readers hooked and yearning for more. Cooper’s compelling storytelling is further elevated by the fresh perspective of having a mystery writer as the main character. This is a book I highly recommend, and I am eager to see where Cooper takes Sophie O’Brion next.
The Vacant House by Tamara G. Cooper is a well-crafted mystery that hooks readers from the very first page. With its intriguing plot, well-developed characters, and rich descriptive language, this book sets a high standard for the Sophie O’Brion Mysteries series. Cooper's ability to weave suspense and curiosity ensures that readers are continually engaged, eagerly turning pages to uncover the truth. This debut installment promises an exciting journey ahead for both Sophie and her readers.
I'm not that familiar with her writing but after reading this book, I am a fan. The author has great potential but needs to not have so much going on with a lot of characters at one time. The story is funny at times and filled with many twists. Sophie is a wonderful character and I loved that she was an author. People say that authors have the best imagination and Sophie can spin a tale that sales books. That is until people start to fear supporting her could cause them to be in danger.
When unexplained murders, missing animals and break ins happen in a neighborhood, fingers point to the suspect known as Sophie. How did she get in this mess? It is hard to explain but just know that the author has a knack for taking a story and weaving it into a web of intrigue. Sophie is unlucky at being at the wrong place at the wrong time. The gossip around town is that she is dangerous and is responsible for a murder. I couldn't wait to see how the author was going to untangle the mess Sophie was in.
Burke is a welcome addition to the story as he tries to help his old friend Sophie prove her innocence. I wasn't surprised at their past relationship and wished there was more depth to their past history together. I didn't figure out who was behind the mystery which helped me to keep reading the story.
This is the first book in a series and I can't wait to see what trouble Sophie gets into next. I would like to see her be a bit more serious at times and less dependent on Burke to always save her. They are a great duo but I want to read how strong Sophie is. After all she is a mystery writer, so she should be able to figure some things out on her own. Some of the story line was hard to follow and there were a lot of characters to keep up with. I will be watching for the next book in the series to see what the author has in store for Sophie next.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
She knows she didn’t do it, but everybody thinks she did.
It all begins when best-selling author Sophie O’Brion is the last person to see a murder victim alive. She looks even more guilty when a woman from her church is beaten, and Sophie was seen with her just hours before. Suddenly, people she has known her entire life begin pointing accusing fingers at her.
Marine Master Sergeant Burke Maguire, an old flame who dumped Sophie years ago, has recently been hired as a police officer in Forman Falls, Texas, and is assigned her case. She doesn’t want his help.
As she gets deeper and deeper into trouble, though, she must rely on him, but trusting him is another matter.
Will they be able to work together, maneuver dangerous twists and turns, and finally clear her name?
A clean romantic suspense novel that grips you from the very beginning and won’t let you go! The Vacant House is an unforgettable adventure. Read it today, if you have plans to stay up all night.
My Thoughts: Ths is an amazing murder mystery. There are so many twists and turns to it. Just when you think you have it figured out, the author Tamara Cooper presents another angle. The readers will enjoy Sophie O'Brion a mystery writer who gets caught up in a real-life mystery with her old flame Burke Maguire. I honestly can't praise this book enough! It kept me on the edge until the very end. Not only filled with suspense, but there is a sense of comedy that the reader can see through the characters that give some comic relief to the story. I can't wait for the second book in the series to arrive!
I'm fairly certain this was my first introduction to this author.
I was not at all sure what to expect when I began to read.
This book is labeled as romantic suspense, but it is more than that! I found it to have a very unique and interesting sense of humor. (I look forward to reading more by this author, to see if that's normal for her, or maybe it's just for this particular series)
Anyway..the story is a suspense story, but things keep happening. To the main character, I mean. First, Sophie is accused by her neighbor of killing his cat. And then, it seems as though the police think she is guilty of this. And all her neighbors turn against her...Say what?! All of this because of a supposed dead cat? Only come to find out....well, yeah, I don't really want to give spoilers here.
Let's just say, the odds are stacked against Sophie. But things seem just a little off...
I wanted to keep reading this book, to find out what would happen next.
The level of suspense in this book, well, it wasn't quite as high as I would have expected from a suspense novel, in all reality, it felt more like a cozy mystery to me. But I did enjoy the twists and turns, the unexpected events and people that kept showing up.
All in all, it was an intriguing read, and I look forward to reading more in this series!

My thoughts on The Vacant House: New author to me. The cover did not suck me in. I don’t normally comment on covers but this one just didn’t make me want to read the book and a lot of the times I read a book because the cover did draw me in.
But the cover not drawing me in is definitely made up for in the fact that this is an amazing read. I really enjoyed this book. The characters sucked me in and I couldn’t put it down.
I had to keep reading and see whether Sophie could prove her innocence. And then, of course, I had to know if she and her old flame would rekindle the romance or if he had moved on without her.
I highly recommend this book as a great suspense mystery read. Those are my favorite!
Okay, so this book did not make me afraid of the dark or feel like someone was out to get me. So I’d say the suspense level is probably around a 3 on the scale of 1-10. More than you’d find in a romance novel but not enough to make it a lock all the windows and doors level.
Definitely think you should check out this author and I look forward to the next book in the series!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. Oh my! From the very first page, the very first sentence in fact, this story demanded my attention. It is full of action, suspense, twists, and more. I love how realbest-selling author Sophie O’Brion is in the story. She is such an interesting character. She demonstrates the necessity of being true to ourselves.
When animals appear to go missing, people go missing, and other people wind up injured or even dead, many people look to blame Sophie. However, Burke Maguire, Sophie’s former boyfriend, enters the scene and sets out to prove Sophie’s innocence. The characters are incredible. The story is well told, and the scenario kept my attention.
I was glad Sophie had people who supported and believed in her. A few times I found myself shaking my head in disbelief. Perhaps living in Texas really helped capture my attention and interest. My one complaint about this book is the ending. This book is another one that is the first in a series, but I do not feel there is complete closure with this book. I will definitely have to read the next book in order to find out how the story continues.
So check out this book for yourself.
I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.
This was quite an amusing and very in depth cozy mystery. Like Sophie, we as the reader are brought into her story quite unexpectedly when ridiculous rumors begin to spread that she is a cat killer. She is not and she cannot believe how everyone begins to believe these rumors. Sophie, being a famous mystery writer, decides to take things into her own hands and begins investigating. However, this story takes on a life of its own and many, many secrets begin to be uncovered.
With a host of cooky characters; nosy neighbors, a great best friend, a very handsome police officer (an ex-boyfriend who just happens to have moved back in town), and a few animal friends makes this mystery downright page turning.
This story put me in the mind of one of my favorite shows, Castle, except with the rolls reversed. This was a fun read by a new to me author and I look forward to more in this series.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Tamara G. Cooper is a new-to-me author but the cover and book description of The Vacant House both appeared interesting so I took a chance on it. I found a book with a fast-moving plot filled with likeable characters, some of them quite quirky. Heroine Sophie O’Brion is a best-selling author who lives in a small town and finds herself accused of killing her neighbor’s cat. From that point things escalate quickly with Sophie in danger of landing in jail or losing her life.
In this entertaining mystery that seems to make absolutely no sense at times, there are a number of possible suspects as well as motives but the author does a great job of untangling all the threads to where it makes perfect sense at the end. I certainly had no clue where it was all going! Action, danger, plenty of humor, second chance romance, and lovable pets that play a major role all work together to assure readers of an enjoyable few hours of reading time.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by Celebrate Lit. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
I liked this romantic mystery. I liked the crazy heroine, Sophie. Her character was developed well. There were times when I laughed out loud. Sophie gets knocked out by a suspected murderer, groggily comes to on her kitchen floor and thinks, “I need to clean under the cabinets.” (2192/3911) She wonders at one point if God loves the quirky ones. I'm glad He does.
The plot was very complex. So complex, I am not sure it all worked. Even a couple of the characters say they never contacted the police because they thought their story was too convoluted to be believed. (3562/3911) Even after the lengthy explanation of it all at the end I am not sure I understand it.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed the novel enough that I will be looking for the next in this series. This one was good for a laugh and kept me mostly engaged to the end.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
This crazy story involves a mystery writer, Sophie O’Brion, who gets involved in a real mystery at home. The cast keeps growing as the suspense increases, and the mixed-up tale whips up the craziness and confusion, not only for the characters but sometimes for the reader. I found it hard to keep everything straight. But I also couldn’t figure out who was guilty since the tale was so involved and complicated like a big puzzle. The book’s title is also a bit misleading since the empty house doesn’t play much of a role. The characters are quirky but fun, yet I couldn’t really connect with them. Perhaps because they don’t seem too deep and their emotions don’t come off the page. People who like a good conundrum would probably like these mysteries, but I don’t think I want the challenge of another in the series. I think the author tried to make include too much in one novel. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
"The Vacant House" by Tamara G. Cooper is really a good book. The surprises just keeps coming till the very end. I was really surprised at who was really the guilty person. I know this might be just be a silly comparison but I was thinking while reading this book it was a little like playing the game Clue, of course the rooms were different locations and weapons were different.
I was literally thinking I have this mystery figured out but I really had no clue.
This is a good book if you want to be swept into a world filled of mystery and questioning who and why and what next's.
Can a dog be a favorite character in a book? I say yes, because Samson is my favorite character in this book and he is a dog.
This book is a book with lots of characters but they are easy to follow. This book would make a good movie.
I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.
A new to me author, who I now plan to follow! Here is a book that has a sense of humor, of realism, with murder, mystery, and romance as well. I'm excited when you can keep me going with a plot twist, and this book did well enough with that.
I loved the characters and the addition of new ones throughout the novel. I was tickled that Sophie was just writing murder mystery books when she got accused of such a crime herself.
Meanwhile, God isn't left out at all, the core themes are all in place. Cooper did a nice job of showing prayer at work. Happily, this book didn't make itself stale by not using dialects. The Texas "flavor" was retained and I thoroughly appreciate that. From neighbors with wagging tongues to cats who have had something happen to them, or maybe not... I just want another book in this series with these fun folks included!
Thank you to Celebrate Lit for my copy of this book. This review is left freely and contains my thoughts and opinions of this book.
This author is new to me, and I have to say I really enjoyed the unique mystery/romance she presented in this book. I felt like Sophie was really well developed, and I had a clear picture of her in my mind. One thing I loved about the book was the Rear Window vibe as that's one of my favorite movies, and I felt like with the book having to do so much with neighbors, it had a similar type vibe. The ending really blows you away, and the twists and turns on the way really keep you glued to the page. I enjoyed the light clean romance, and how it didn't interrupt the mystery too much. Each piece of the puzzle was slowly revealed to keep you guessing until the very last pages of the book. Overall, my only issue may be the dominant first person voice proved a little confusing for me. I recommend this one for the mystery/suspense reader who likes a light clean romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, and all opinions given are entirely my own.
So this is the first book I’ve read by Tamara G Cooper and I really liked it. Like I mentioned above, it was a classic “who done it” story, but it had SO many twists and turns that I had no idea who the bad guy was and why they were after Sophie. Honestly, there were moments when I was a bit confused because someone I thought was a bad, wasn’t really, or something super unexpected happened; however, everything came together really well in the end. I LOVED the main character, Sophie. She was so funny and she did so many things that made me want to laugh out loud. The relationship between Sophie and Burke was also very entertaining. They had a unique relationship because of their past; however, they didn’t let it affect where they were now… much. Overall, with unique twists and turns and suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat, I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars **** . I’m looking forward to reading about Sophie’s adventures in the next book in the Sophie O’Brion Mysteries.
What a fascinating story - a mystery writer in the midst of a mystery! Sophie O’Brion is a well published mystery writer, so she certainly could have some eccentric fans, but this is her hometown. Everyone knows her and she knows most everybody. Starting with a dog that tries to get to her newspaper before she does and then hides it under the vacant house, continuing with her supposed murder of a neighbor cat, this intrepid author just finds herself in mystery after mystery. Break-ins, long held secrets, murders and more characters than you can possibly remember keeps the reader absolutely engaged through the whole book.
I must admit, the resolution of the mystery and even the ending were not at all what I expected. You know its a very well written book when the author keeps one guessing the entire time!
This ARC was received through CelebrateLit. The impressions, opinions and 5 star rating are my own and were not solicited.
Decidedly unputdownable! Extraordinary in so many ways! I thoroughly enjoyed every word of this wacky, raucous and thoroughly engaging tale! Had me giggling and eeeking and completely caught up in this convoluted and complicated caper! The Vacant House is clever, well written, and includes more than a few kinda-creepy scenes well balanced with excellent and often eccentric characters. Readers are kept on the edge of their seat throughout!
I highly recommend this one! Do enjoy it! This new to me author is now at the very top of my TBR list!

A string of bad luck drags mystery writer Sophie O’Brian into a mystery that is accusing her of murder.
A complex story with a lot going on. At a few times, maybe too much was going on. The quirky heroine at times drove me crazy with the way she acted. The characters were well developed as was the plot. The suspense had bits of humor woven in at just the right moments to keep things from getting to dark.
I enjoyed the overall plot and story line. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
Sophie is trying to figure out who murdered her neighbor. A old flame of hers has been recently hired by the police department. Will they be able to work together and can he keep her safe?
Sophie keeps getting in more trouble. The book was fast moving , never a dull moment. I was surprised who the culprit was. I loved how Burke would always happen to be there when needed.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit. This book review is my own opinion.
I loved this book! It's well written , humorous up to laugh out loud and, in a hearbeat, turns to tender with holding back tears. The story is wild and you meet a lot of characters swirling around Sophie's life. You have to follow the trail that not only twists but does a few loop-de-loops! I needed a good book since the last book I read was really bad. I'm looking forward to more Sophie and Burke mysteries to solve and highly recommend this book!
A Vacant House by Tamara Cooper is impossible to put down. Seriously, it is 4 in the morning and I just finished reading this book. Sophie O'Brion is small town girl with a penchant for trouble. She writes best selling mysteries and has a vivid imagination. Her high school sweetheart is back in town. Something she discovers while chasing the neighbor's newspaper stealing dog, while wearing her bathrobe and slippers! Read this book!!!
On a personal level, ditsy heroines make me nuts. This one was not only ditsy, she wasn't likeable. Aren't most policemen really busy? So Burke magically showing up at every crisis? Really? In a word..not a fan.
This is the fourth book I’ve read by Tamara Cooper, and I’ve enjoyed them all! Tamara has a wonderful imagination and her books reflect that. I love that her books incorporate God into the story. I love the example made of trusting God to answer prayer and the actual process of praying when needing help. Sophie is quite a character and I’m looking forward to more books about her!
Sophie O’Brien is sweet and charming but somehow always manages to get herself into sticky situations. It starts with the supposed death of a cat – who later turns up with it’s nine lives intact – and ends with a string of murders that Sophie helps her high school flame and now police officer solve. There are plenty of suspects and lots of false leads before the true culprit is brought to justice. A great read for everyone who enjoys a action-packed romantic suspense filled with wonderful, quirky characters.
