As the freshman baseball team at State University tries to live up to its nickname, "Fence Busters," Chip must endure an injury and friction with a jealous teammate.
Another good story about Chip and his friends. Chip deals with a lot of things in this story including a team mate who is jealous, an injury that keeps him from pitching for a while, and friends who need help. I really like Chip’s modesty and his willingness to be the first to talk to someone about a problem even if it means being humble. And I love the fact that Rockwell is more concerned about the players and their attitudes than about winning ball games. Recommended to anyone who enjoys sports or a good sports story.
Fence Busters is a short exciting story about a rare group of freshman baseball players who surprise the college with their outstanding performance in the first preseason game of the year. There was a huge crowed at the first State University pre-season game. The longer the game went on and the more innings they played the more showed up. “There are no more loyal baseball fans in the world” (pg. 40). These fans stuck out the whole game all 10 innings of high scoring but close game all the way until the end. The freshman players weren’t taking any heat from the upperclassmen players. When they showed up to play and the older guys were just there to go through the motion expecting to just beat the freshman and go home. The older players would try to get into the freshmen’s heads by saying stuff like “talkin to yourself freshmeat” and “don’t like the responsibility of the hot spot do ya”. (pg. 21) They did these things to try and throw them off their game so that they could have a chance to maybe pull off a win. The freshman would go on to beat the upperclassmen and take some of their spots on the roster. They have a great first season at State University and but there is a strange feeling between the players that develops throughout the book that you will have to read for yourself.
