I’m rather used to the crazy cases, because let’s face it, most cops can handle the run-of-the-mill with their eyes closed. I’m only called in when the situation is weird or they need to solve the case fast.
This case is a little of both.
Someone’s attacking women as they get off of work, hitting them in the back of the head. What started as a case of battery has steadily built up to homicide. With three murders, six victims, and no leads, the Clarksville PD are desperate to catch the assailant. But there’s no real leads for us to follow, either, and for once my eyes can’t really help.
A madman running around attacking women is bad enough, but the police are demanding answers we can’t give them, and they’re not taking no for an answer. It’s pushing us all past our limits, and frankly, I don’t know what’s going to break first: The case or Donovan’s patience.

AJ Sherwood believes in happily ever afters, magic, dragons, good men, and dark chocolate. She often dreams at night of delectable men doing sexy things with each other. In between writing multiple books (often at the same time) she pets her cats, plays with her dogs, and attempts insane things like aerial yoga.
She currently resides in Tennessee with aforementioned cats, dogs, and her editor/best friend/sister/partner in crime.
Hey, way better than the first book. I had a feeling it would be. You might say I'm book-psychic that way. Although, I've also read a lot of crap, so I'm probably about as psychic as my dog.
Don't be too impressed. I had to make those signs for him.
Our couple was established in the last book and in this book we have their dual POV's. That was really the only drawback to this one because there was no difference at all in their narratives. You couldn't tell which POV it was at all. It's like they were written by the same person or something. Or, that these two guys just happened to find another person who had the same inner voice. Maybe it's like one of those things where we are all time-sharing an inner voice with someone who sleeps on opposite time schedules as the other. Somewhere out there some poor schlub has the Jilly inner voice yelling for chocolate, thinking about weird-ass shit, and spouting snark all day. Oh, you know what would be cool? If I could share inner voices with that movie guy who does all the previews... "In a world where reading and snark is a super-power, Jilly is the most powerful super hero ever... when she feels like getting off her couch and fighting crime. Which is rarely. It has to be a really bad night for television or Netflix, her internet has to be out, and the weather better be nice, dammit. Only then, criminals better watch out!"
So, where was I? Oh yeah. Ok - dual POV's bad. Everything else, though? Good. The problems from the last book for me had to do with the fact that there was lacking humor. Well, in this one I actually chuckle/smiled a couple of times. There was a new character introduced named Garret. He is pansexual, by the way - not relevant, just interesting. And, he's funny. Thank the book gods! Garret has saved the day!
The other problem was some strange dialogue that made me feel like it was written in the voice of a way older person and not a 20-something. That was resolved too! There were actually relevant, current references. I felt like it was possible the narrator wasn't an 80 year old grandmother of 6.
Gram got fired as the ghost writer.
The main story in this is the psychic patrol (Jon and his office pals) are helping the police catch a serial killer. The FBI eventually gets involved and there is another gay couple in the FBI that are interesting as well. There is a lot of psychic stuff going on - with various types of psychics. That was fun. The more psychic the better after all.
or not.
I like the relationship between Jon and Donovan. In second books with the same couple sometimes authors feel the need to break them up or have a big drama that keeps them apart, only to bring them back together at the end. This did not happen and I was relieved. The relationship, so far (fingers crossed), has been remarkably mature. No over the top angst or drama. Just the usual stuff, but they talk things out. Very adult of them. Not crazy or head-boppin at all. I approve.
First of all, fuck dual POV. Secondly, FUCK DUAL 1ST PERSON POV. It is incongruent, repetitive and there wasn't anything distinctive between the two main narrators. If you took out the "helpful" denotations of each narrator, you probably wouldn't be able to differentiate between Jon and Donovan's voices. Making the dual POV pointless. Murder mysteries are just better from an omniscient narrator or a 1st person narrator. But this book is just a big no.
The murderer is a man- who appears to be the psychic equivalent of a paranoid schizophrenic. But making the victims exclusively women and then having the audacity to try to dredge up sympathy for him... No. I'm sorry but no. No, you can't try to justify femicide with mental illness. It was handled so poorly. I can't handle it. I just can't. And I won't.
There is a better story to tell. He could have even been a psychic villain. Or the story could traverse the ways which psychics deal with less dangerous criminals with mental health issues that affect their auras and meridian lines and whatever.
I'm also fed up with every damn page praising St Garrett of the short lean build.
On top of that, it's just boring. There was no sense of urgency. No suspense. This wasn't even a mystery novel. It was just a series of log entries of a couple of days in the lives of Jon and Donovan. The only point of interest was the almost-altercation between the Clarkson PD chief and Jon.
This book and everything it stands for can fuck off.
There's a new case on the agenda. Women are hurt or killed by someone hitting them on the head. Problem is, no one sees anything. Nobody. So Jon and his team are called in to investigate. Jon, to use his psychic abilities and Donovan to watch after Jon as always. There's also a new team member to fit in. One who has some history with Donovan.
I am absolutely in love with these two guys. They are the perfect couple. They may have doubts and hangups but they're willing to talk it out. And Donovan...oh man...so swoon-worthy. There's also a new romance brewing.
I love this author's writing and I am loving this series. I can't wait for the next one.
This was a bit of a disappointment. This series has so much potential, but somehow nothing really happened in this book.
I love Jon’s abilities. We got some exciting scenes in the first book with Jon playing human lie detector and him trying to figure out killers’ auras. I loved those parts. And I was sure we would get more of this in this book. But we got (almost) nothing.
Jon did two level 3 readings where he connected with the minds of two coma patients. It was completely boring and it was over in 3 sentences. After that he supposedly drained himself completely and had to recover.
Now it was mentioned a lot how Jon would be wiped out after a level 3 reading and everything was going to be very dramatic. If that’s the case, I need to at least have a dramatic kind of psychic reading before I fully embrace the fact that it impacted Jon that much. But we didn’t get that.
There were no issues with Jon and electronic devices in this, or anything like that. Well, he still can’t be around anything electronic or it would fry, but there were no problems arising from that in this.
Now I had some trouble with the rest of the book as well (the romance and character development), and this all comes down to one main problem. This book was all tell and no show. We get told about Jon’s ability a lot, but not shown enough (the first book handled that better).
And I was also quite surprised when Donovan kept thinking about Jon and how he was so calm all the time, and how he was never cranky or riled up. He was basically this uber relaxed person according to Donovan. But I never once felt that way myself! I didn’t think Jon was this super laid back person at all. He did get angry at times and even cranky. So once again what we were told and then shown didn’t line up.
These books have so much potential. I really love Jon and Donovan, and I think Jon’s psychic ability is just amazing. But have him track serial killers or have him figure out a person close to him has been lying or something. Anything to make it exciting!
I will still try the other books in the series, but I really hope the author decides to use Jon’s ability more and to use more show than tell.
I hate to say it. While book 1 was all vibrant and colourful, the second instalment in this series felt mainly grayscale.
Still love Jon and Donovan, but I have to agree with quite a few other readers … this didn’t quite work. So, what’s the problem?
.) For me it seems that the book is unfocused.
There are lots of banal, everyday conversations, some repeating themselves (like the one about Donovan’s mum and her cooking) with not a lot happening. The case is interesting enough, but the way it is resolved felt a bit bland. I’m not sure why we needed two scenes of Jon doing a level 3 reading. It felt (more or less) like reading the same thing twice.
.) I had hoped for more details in Jon and Donovan's relationship development.
The main stuff in this department happens at the very end. Donovan’s issues with his scars are mentioned and virtually resolved in a mere few pages. I think this is a huge thing for them as a couple, and much more could have been made of it.
The same goes for their one-month trial of living together. We get a short mention of one argument over a light bulb, when Donovan does his usual overbearing thing, but that’s it. This is exactly the stuff I would have liked to see dealt with in more depth.
.) the dual POV:
Not a problem with that, of course, but unfortunately the voices of the two men are not distinct enough. I did have to check whose mind I was in on a couple of occasions.
.) Garrett:
Nice guy and all’s fine with him, but … I did hope that his appearance might cause a teeny bit more of a ripple between Jon and Donovan than it did. Is that bad of me, I wonder? A touch more jealousy than there was, maybe? A touch more of a grumble? Nothing serious of course– because we know Jon KNOWS that Donovan is his (as he can see his love) so there would be no doubts about that anyway.
.) Rodger:
We know that Jon hates him and thinks he is an interfering, arrogant prick. And yes, Rodger gives a lot of advice when it is clearly not welcome, but I never got the impression by his actions that he is such a bad and horrible guy? Basically, I felt I was told that Rodger is awful rather than experiencing it. I mean, he is not telling Jon anything other people haven’t pointed out to him already! And when Donovan goes all ‘grizzly bear’ on Rodger I wasn’t 100% convinced he actually deserves it.
.) the steam
There is some and we get a sexy scene towards the end, but somehow it left me a bit on the cool side. And dare I mention it?
AJ Sherwood created a fabulous world here and two very lovable characters. To me she didn’t make most of that in this book. However, if there should be a third, I will certainly check in how Jon and Donovan are doing.
This was the fluffiest, the most adorable mystery I have read this month! The characters are absolutely lovable, the solution of the case hinges on psychic's abilities so the mystery itself is fine but not the main attraction for me. Jon and Donovan are so cute and sweet together. This author managed to make me like her men even without high intensity or steam of which there was very little. There was a tiny bit of angst that was resolved by our two MCs actually communicating with each other! So no unnecessary drama here! There was a lot of endearing moments, cuddles and strong protective men. All in all, I enjoyed myself.

This series is so much fun, and I love getting the POV from both characters. I wasn’t necessarily missing it in book 1, but I usually prefer dual POV. I was also happy to discover that there’d been a switch in narrators between book 1 and 2. That was definitely a good choice.
Highly recommend this series if you enjoy psychic characters, low angst and mystery solving.

“Yeah, babe, I can see that the two of you were together at one point,” Jon said dryly, finally lifting his head and pinning me in place with those baby blues. Dammit. Ever get that feeling you’ve got one foot in a grave, the other on a banana peel?
The most disturbing thing about accidentally waking up at four in the morning is realizing some people do this on purpose so they can exercise.
Jon is a psychic who sees auroras. He can also go into people's minds and read their memories. But while doing so he is very vulnerable. Donavan is an anchor, but he is also Jon's lover. He is like a bear soft and huggable at times, but also fiercely loyal and protective. They are trying to solve the mystery of who is killing women and why. At the same time trying to overcome their individual insecurities and move forward I'm their relationship. Good story line, hot sexiness, some angst and lovable characters make for good reading. This is book two so make sure you read book one first. You will enjoy them both.
The mystery was quite interesting. So I dragged along in the book to find out the solution.
The rest of it was fuckin’ awful. Everyone seems to have the emotional maturity of a 4 year old, which everyone then seems to apply to their jobs. In the workplace there is no discernible management or problem solving going on. Which kinda drives aspects of the story.
Psychics are an established part of the population (for a couple of centuries) whose skills are deployed in various workplaces. It is well established that psychics also have a tendency to disrupt electronics. Yet somehow no one has adjusted workplace environments (or anything else) to cater to this? WTAF? And then everyone is cross at the psychics about it? Epic Epic Worldbuilding Fail. She hasn’t thought through that the police were using psychics before, you know, electricity. So wouldn’t be likely that as psychics were well established BEFORE electricity was in common use, and as technology was developed, that issues would have been folded in to how technology in everyday life evolved? D’uh. You know, the way eye glasses have been around for over 1000 years, notwithstanding what else has been going on.
The depiction of the relationship between the two MCs was just yuck. What with the whole lack of emotional maturity/boundaries bullshit. Also lots of martyrdom due to other peoples’ issues and bullshit which I have no patience with.
3.75 stars Jon and Donovan's relationship is progressing. In order to move to the next level Donovan has to make Jon see he is not like the others in his past. Patience is key. While that's going on they are also working together to solve a new case with the help of Donovan's best friend Garrett on hand protecting Jon becomes a teeny tiny bit less stressful. Protecting Jon from himself and his workaholic ways is a whole other story. Another solid read.
I did enjoy this story and i enjoyed these characters, but it is a little juvenile with the way the dialogue is.. it could be me, but idk.
I didn't love the narrator, but he does narrate the next two books, not sure about the future Jon books though.
I also heard/read on AJ Sherwood's Facebook page that Greg B might narrate Mack's books.. *fingers crossed* that happens!!
4-4.5 stars November 2020 and December 2020
The second reread still enjoyed it as much as the first time, but like the first book the narrator could be better. He did weird inflections on words that kinda took me out of the book. Overall loved the adventures that Don and Jon get up to.
You know the book where you just desperately hate the murderer but at the end it turns out you really can't? That no matter how much you despise them, you also pity them. Wanna help them? This was a book like that.
When Jon and team get called-in to work in an hostile environment, none of them are, need-less to say, happy about it. Add to that the fact that they just had a new guy and Donovan's best friend, Garrett, join them and Jon senses something more than friendship in their bond and things aren't looking up, overall. It also doesn't help that Jon is struggling to cope with the idea of moving in with Donovan and Donovan's reaction over him doing a level three reading is all the trigger that Jon needs to tie himself up in knots and throw himself into this case.
But this one's a real head scratcher. Women of all ages, ethnicities and job backgrounds seem to be getting attacked. Initially the women were just left gravely injured, but soon they started showing up dead. And the only things that links them is that they're all women. So when one victim survives, and Jon is ordered (remember hostile environment?) to do a level three reading, he obliges. But he is unable to learn anything from the victim.
It is only when an army officer fights back does Jon get to see the killer. Doing so many level three readings has Jon exhausted and despite being unhappy about the whole situation, Donovan is there every step of the way, gently coaxing him to eat, helping him shower, giving him medicines and cuddling him to sleep. Seriously!! Where do I find a Donovan??
Finally when the man is caught, it not only breaks their hearts but also everyone who's reading. The poor man has suffered through enough and hopefully he'll be fine now.
The ray of sunshine and source of constant laughter in this book was Garrett, his teasing Donovan and his love for Sho. The way he tries to win Sho over by being patient and gentle, kind and caring. It's no wonder that Garrett is perfect for Sho, his protective instincts rival that of the Havilis and he shines as brightly to Jon, as any Havili.
The book was beautiful with amazing character growth in both Jon and Donovan. Garrett and Sho are my loves and I'm rooting for them. There were moments where my heart broke, especially over the 'murderer' but overall this was a very sweet read.
December 2023 audiobook The story is still good, but only 4 stars for the audiobook
February 2021 so glad, that this book includes Donovans POV - I love this series
July 2019 A.J. Sherwood is an auto-buy for me after that book. I read now 3 books and all are extraordinary good.
this is the second book in this series and I really recommend to read them in order. that is not a stand-alone. as in the first book, the mystery is really well done. what I loved more than in the first book was that we see more of Donovans POV
In this second installment in the 'Jon's Mysteries' series, Sherwood changes from Jon's single POV, to a dual POV with Jon and Donovan. The case is interesting, but there was a little too much 'tell' and way too little 'show' for my personal taste. Still, I love the fluffiness of this series and I'm still really into Jon and Donovan's love story, so I'll definitely pick up the next book in the series and see how it goes.
A few months ago I listened to the first book in this series and I fell head over heels for these characters and the world AJ Sherwood created and couldn’t wait to spend more time in it. I was soo happy when this book was released.
Again, the title of the book is quirky – and kind of fitting to Jon in a way, and it definitely fits the case. And while it is a new case I still urge you to start from book one to really get to know the world and characters to get to know them and their backstory, and some subtle – and not so subtle hints. Jon and Donovan have come far, and still have ways to go. They are a great match for each other, and while it at times can feel very one sided it’s clear that they both are what the other needs. Their relationship doesn’t get much page time in this book, it kind of took a backseat to the case. I feel the story as a whole wasn’t as strong as book one. Parts of it were resolved too quickly and easily and I wished they were more fleshed out. But you know what? I had a great time anyway!
So… elephant in the room…. This book has, due to tragic circumstances a different narrator from the first book. Lloyd Thomas is a new narrator for me and also to the field it seems. This is usually a bit of a gamble, and starting in the middle of a series will never be easy – especially considering the large shoes he had to fill. This gamble though, paid off – big time. You can’t tell he only has a few books in his repertoire. He narrates with a surety of someone well versed in the field and he hits so many of my high points; he differentiates between characters, has great pacing, adds that little extra with sound effects for phone calls, he also narrates with passion and really connects with the characters and makes the listeners connect with them as well.
The book is narrated from both Jon and Donovan’s POV and I really loved how Thomas did that. Most narrators narrate a book in their regular voice, only modifying it for dialogues to keep track of who says what. That’s not the case here. Everything told from Donovan’s POV is told in Donovan’s deeper voice, descriptions, monologues and what not. I find that I really enjoyed it. It’s something simple that so clearly shows us who the listener is following, connecting us to the characters and the story that much more. With this book Thomas clearly shows what he’s capable off and I can’t wait to listen to more of his productions in the future, because I hope there will be many more.
A copy of this book was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review
Oh Donovan! He just makes me all *heart eyes* and *swoon* what a gentleman and what a perfect match for Jon!
I completely love all the interactions between these characters. I loved the addition of Garrett, Jon's friend and how well he fits in with the group. I would love to read about him and Sho!
4.5 stars for me because this one didn't pack quite the punch that the first one did, although the first one had a lot of world building and setting up Jon's abilities that this one didn't need to explain? I can't wait for the third book!
I enjoyed this one, I did, but not nearly enough as the first book.
First off, it switches to a dual narrator, which I think was a poor choice. I actually love dual POV, but sometimes it doesn't work or make sense, and that was the case here, IMO. The author already established a single narrator in the first book, and switching it in book two, and with both in first person no less, was disorienting. With a few exceptions (which could have easily been modified) there wasn't much we got from Donovan's POV that couldn't have just as easily been in Jon's, and Donovan's voice here was SO much weaker and, frankly, boring compared to Jon. It actually made me a lot less interested in him as a character--seeing him through Jon's eyes is great, seeing inside his head... boring. Which I hated! I didn't want to care less about the couple I found so engaging in book 1, but Donovan's POV was like seeing behind the curtain. :(
We also are introduced to Donovan's old army buddy, Garrett, and there was kind of a weird amount of focus on him considering he's not a main character, and I found him to be pretty annoying and immature for the most part.
The case... this time it's just one case, and I missed the multiple case format of book one. The case itself is also a little bizarre, with the bad guy turning out to have a mental illness, and IDK, I just didn't love the way it all turned out.
But I did like learning more about psychics, and I enjoy Jon and Donovan's relationship (particularly when we're in Jon's head) and seeing the growing pains of a new relationship. We got a bit more satisfaction with Jon's past/family, though not nearly enough for me TBH. Still planning to read the next book, but I've resigned myself to not loving the rest as much as book 1 as a lot of what I loved in that book seems to have changed for the rest of the series. What a bummer.
Eh, this was okay, but not a lot happened. The romance - such as it is - took place mostly in the first book, so in this one, it's focused on Jon's skittishness over Donavan moving in with him, and the mystery plot was ridiculously thin - some bloke was whacking women over the head and seriously injuring them or killing them. The police had no leads and called in the psychics, even though the lead detective hated their guts. (And given we learn in this book that psychics have been known about and assisting police for over a century, that seemed a bit weird.)
The real trouble is that all of the "investigating" was done by psychics sitting around in rooms, so it was all telling and no showing and there was no real action. I like the quirky characters and these books are fun and fluffy when you need something like that, but this was disappointingly insubstantial.
This series is very addictive. I'm just thrilled to see Jon and donovan at it again. And the development between the side characters Garrett and sho is something to look forward to. I love how Garrett was introduced into the story and his role in it. I love how we get to see more action from other psychics as well. Less shooting than the first but not any less actions. I also love how the author added in that don do have a bit of a temper instead of just being a saint in everything. Book one painted him to be a perfect but this painted him to be the awesome boyfriend.
I do love this group of characters. Jon and Donovan are great together as a couple. I love that they actually talk to each other. The introduction of Garrett to the story and his chemistry with Sho has me looking forward to more books as well, not to mention the introduction of Donovan's brother coming soon as well.
Jon's powers are so unique and interesting. But this case is pushing all of Jon's limits. There's no leads in sight and only a few survivors in comas in the hospital. But Jon stretching his limits, stretches Donovan's patience. He's not willing to put his lover at risk without really good reason. It was cute to see Garrett getting protective of Jon as well.
The story lines are simplistic in this series, but I like the good hearted feelings at the end of the day. Sure there's a murder out there to track down and find, but our team of heroes are awesome and going to come through things happy at the other end.
Re-read for a group challenge and a re-cap. Felt a little sorry for Don in this one, the poor guy can’t do his job. I like how their relationship is progressing, how Jon just says what he sees. I liked the run in with Rodger. Favourite character still Garrett. I like how easy going he is. Really sweet psychic murder mystery.
May 2020
It’s been a while so may need to read the first book again. Donovan and Bane are as sweet as ever, with problems to solve both personal and work. Not like usual murder mysteries. Favourite character was Garrett.

“I’m a little scared by how much I love you.” Both of his arms went around my neck as he leaned in, whispering above my mouth, “You have to keep saying ‘I love you.’ It gives me courage.”
Back in the world of psychics with Jon and Donovan was a good palette cleanser for me. These books are so drama free with a carefree feel to them even when they deal with serious issues like murder and people psychology. They are written in a way that is easy to breeze through and have some pretty funny and sweet sexy moments. The only complaint I have, and I might have mentioned this in my 1st review is that Donovan seems to be the perfect man. He has no character flaws thus far to me, which makes him a little unrealistic to me. Though I’m sure it makes Jon’s already complicated life much easier. I don’t know, I just like a little drama in my life, to make the books a 5 star for me. I like emotional moments. Though we get some very good character connections emotionally and psychologically I just don’t find myself emotionally connected to our two MCs. Don’t get me wrong I love reading about them but I just need a little more to bring me up a star but 4 stars is great. I do highly recommend these books for a good time crime book. They are super fun and fast paced without a lot of filler which is perfect for something short and sweet to read between other emotionally draining books which always has a place on my bookshelf. I will be back to this world and their adventures soon I am sure.
Jon and Donovan are out to solve a serial murder spree for which the killer seems to have no motive and the only commonality is the fact that he's killing women by hitting them in the head from behind. The mystery and resolution were definitely believable and Jon went through several excruciating level three sessions (in which he goes into the mind of the comatose patient) to solve it.
There was quite a bit about new team member, Garrett, one of Donovan's military buddies who is apparently going to be Sho's partner or be featured in his own book. Ditto for Donovan's brother, Brandon, whom we didn't meet but heard a lot about. Much of the relationship time between Donovan and Jon was exploratory as they built a working relationship as well as a romantic one. The love word appeared in this story, but overall, I didn't find this as riveting and exciting as the first one -- in either the relationship or the action/adventure. It's definitely 4 stars for me, maybe even 5 but I wasn't as swept along as I was with book one. Time will tell. Onward to book three.
It's what I call popcorn-books. It's fun to read, but it's not really overly good or makes me really giggly. Book 2 is better than book 1 I think, especially because Garrett shows up, an old friend of Donovan, and I really like him and their banter, also the maybe pair with Sho :3 The crime was also kind of more interesting, tho I dont have the same feelings about murderers, who have a psychotic illness. I don't have any empathy for them, while Jon and Donocan has. But well, that's just it.
I was entertained enough :3 especially because the "Protect-at-all-cost" trope is very strong in this one.
I really just love this series. It's so fun. I love the relationship between the MCs. It's so solid and real and deep. It's so good. The mystery was a little bit in the backseat imo. While Jon was still involved, it felt like he was less involved. But it's fine. I also still felt some sympathy for the bad guy, I really like how compassionate Jon was with him. I can't wait for the third book.
