Fans of Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Supernatural – get ready to dive into a world where magic is powerful, clever witches rule the world, and vampires lurk in the darkness. It was an otherwise normal Tuesday when I found out that I'm not alone in the universe. At 2:05, my grandmother vanished, taken by vampires I didn't know existed. At 3:30, my aunt showed up to explain how the world really operates.By 5:00, I was on my way to Hybrid a school for people like me.At 7:30, I was walking into my dorm for the first time and discovered that Hybrid Academy isn't so unlike high school. There are the popular witches, the dreamy warlocks, the shy magicians, and yes, even the shifters.Hi.I'm Max.And this is my story.
L.C. Mortimer was raised on a small farm in Kansas, which sparked her interest in going off the grid. Learning how to can, garden, and become self-reliant were all important parts of her upbringing. After pursuing her degree in English Literature, Mortimer traveled the country with her husband, living in Hawaii, Maryland, and everywhere in between. When she's not busy dreaming up her next story, Mortimer can be found stocking up on canned goods for the zombie apocalypse.
I feel like there was a huge opportunity missed with this one. It had potential but the story was definitely rushed and not developed properly. Nothing made sense in the story because it wasn't explained. A huge lack of detail as well as a spotty timeframe. One second it was September then the next it was Christmas. I was genuinely confused most of the time and there were way too many cliches in this. Also, the main character is 19 but she, along with all the other characters, was portrayed as 10-year-olds (at least in my head they were by the way they spoke and thought). & the inconsistencies in this book?? OMG.
What a great way to kick off a series. This book has a bit of everything, within its many twists and turns we see Max try to figure out what happened to her grandmother while she is at the Hybrid academy. We see Max as a character become a stronger person with amazing morals and way of seeing things. With her friends by her side Kiera and Henry will we see her unlock her magic and her shifter side, to find out pick up a copy today.
Maxine, or Max, is a barista in a small town filled with magical beings. She was raised by her grandmother after her parents were killed in an accident ten years before. Her grandmother is a strong witch, but Max can do no magic. One day Max finally stood up to her boss but let it slip her grandmother expected her at home. Normally, she told people she lived with a roommate. Her grandmother and she were in hiding but she did not know why. When she arrived home her grandmother was missing, but her aunt was there, Erin. She knows her grandmother went missing when she sent a call out for help. She forced Max asleep and boarded a train to the Hybrid Academy where every student was a mix of supernatural races. Erin was a shifter and witch but no abilities came for just yet. She also had a trunk she protected that was shrunk by a spell her grandma made. It held her grandma’s spellbook. Things at the academy were different, and Max finally learned to shift and do some magic with a wand. Someone was out to get her things though…who was it? Why did her familiar Boo keep going missing? This is the first year, but one thing is for certain, Erin and Max planned to find her grandmother~ I received this book via Booksprout and am leaving a voluntary review.
I liked the premise of Hybrid Academy and where it was going. Maxine never asked her grandmother any questions and they kept to themselves. I thought it was odd that Max just went along with never questioning anything. I appreciate that the story didn’t drown in details but there were areas that probably could have been expanded. The lead up to Max going to the Academy and her interaction with others at the Academy were great plotting for setting up the major highpoint of the story. I felt that it was rushed at the end after that. The story just jumped through when the beginning was detailed and built up to it. Seeing as this was only Year One and there are still at least Year 2 & 3, there is hope that there will be more detailing and experiences with Max and her friends.
The overall storyline is interesting but there are some major problems with the writing. **MINOR SPOILERS**. I actually liked the opening section of the book the most, up through the MC arriving at the academy. The premise of the school was good, understanding the need for a specialized hybrid academy. But the writing was very basic. A lot of telling, skipping through days and weeks at a time. The conflicts with other characters seemed pointless overall other than to show the MC was bullied. The idea behind this story seems great, but the writing and character development left a lot to be desired. I probably won’t be finishing the series.
This was a good read. Max has been basically in hiding. Her grandma didn't trust anyone and wanted to keep her hidden. Max's grandma goes missing and the same day she shipped off to the academy. Here she learns how to use her gifts and also makes some new friends. At the end Max is convinced that her grandma is still alive and plans to try and find her.
This is book one of the Hybrid Academy series and covers Year One at the academy for new student Max (Maxine). Until hours ago, she lived with her grandmother in a secluded cabin in the woods outside of a small town. She has lived with her grandmother, almost in hiding and home schooled, for ten years, after the disappearance and death of her parents. Her gran has been searching for clues to whatever it was that Max’s parents were looking for when they disappeared. Whatever it was has led to Max having to live with her gran. The town they live outside of, has a lot of magic users and Max is one of the exceptions, she has no magic and even though her parents and gran taught her spells, she has never been able to do any. At the age of nineteen, she insisted on working in a local coffee shop, but gets taken advantage of by her boss and the other staff, making her stay late all the time.
On the Tuesday when everything changes, she sticks up for herself, for the first time ever, when her boss wants her to stay longer even though her shift finished over an hour ago. She refuses and is fired on the spot. Wandering around town, a bit shocked, it takes her longer than normal to get home, to find the cabin has been ransacked and her gran is missing. She quickly packs a couple of sentimental items into a bag and goes to leave, when her Aunt Erin turns up. She says that Max’s gran is dead and that she needs to come with her, to be safe. Someone is after whatever her gran was working on, same as with her parents!
But she doesn’t take Max to her home, she ends up taking her to Hybrid Academy, where she tells Max that she will fit in better and learn more about what she actually is. Max thought that both her parents were witches, but it turns out her father was a wolf shifter and only her mother was a witch. Aunt Erin is now a powerful witch, running her own coven and leaves her in the hands of the school principal and an old friend and teacher. Max has turned up a month and a half into the new semester and is shown to her room at the top of the girl’s dorm. She gets shown her room by a half fairy, half witch called Keira, who ends up as a good friend. She has a single rom to herself and her familiar Boo, a cat she has had since she was about thirteen. Another person she meets the next day, is a boy called Henry, who isn’t wearing any robes, to show what his powers are, but she is too shy to ask.
Keira and Henry help her get sorted out at school and show her about. Even something as simple as getting into her own bedroom, or the front door of the academy, needs a magic spell to be uttered and Max feels quite useless. Having never really gone to a school, all she knows about schools is what she has read in books or seen in films. But unfortunately, it is soon made obvious that there are the usual cliques of students around, with some that especially love to bully others. When one in particular picks up on her new friend Keira, she stands up for her, with only words against someone who retaliates with magic! It won’t stop Max, now she has a bit of backbone in her after confronting her old boss and not being able to stand bullying of others. Max is still pretty much a loner and not part of one of the groups, but neither are her two friends.
Vampires took her gran and Max believes her to still be alive, rather than dead like her aunt said, and she needs to unlock her gran’s magical grimoire, which was hidden away in the cabin and not found by those who took her. An old friend turned enemy of her aunt, will soon cause problems for Max and danger to her friends as well. The majority of this book covers the time before Max arrived at the academy and then her first couple of weeks or months at the school as she gets used to learning about magic and shifting. She finally manages to use magic and even shift when danger faces her, but the story is over well before the whole of the school year takes place. It has a great start, but the ending was a bit lacking really. If the book didn’t say that it was Year One, and instead called it Book One, then I would have taken the story told at the beginning and the events at the start of her time at the academy, as a complete book. The story could surely have picked up with another adventure or something else about her gran before the end of that school year. I know it has plans for stuff happening over the summer holidays, but that left the rest of the school year a bit blank. Life isn’t like that. I really enjoyed what was there, especially the background about Max and her life with her gran before she got to the academy, as well as her first few weeks there, so can’t mark it down too badly. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
This is the first book in the „Hybrid Academy Trilogy“ by LC Mortimer. Max (MC) is a sheltered girl that has been living incognito in a cabin in the forest with her grandmother since her parents disappeared ten years before. At her grandmother behest Max tells everyone that she is living with a roommate until one day she slips during a fight with her boss. After loosing her job and coming back home, the day just get worse: grandma is gone, her aunt is there, she falls into an induced sleep and ends up at the Hybrid Academy. A place of study for all kind of hybrids, the academy is different from High School in exactly nothing! Be prepared to find the usual cliques and student feuds with sprinkled magic and supernatural abilities on the mix.
The story is nice and straightforward, Max is a nice and a likeable girl that embodies to perfection the “new girl at school” role, and without doubt the best character in the series. This first year at the Academy, Max will discover her nature and capacities, and have to interact with new people which leads her to refine her own social skills.
L.C. Mortimer states that book will appeal to fans of the magical, special fans of Harry Potter, Supernatural or Buffy. It has cinematic quality that reminds of TV Highschool shows, and Max is more Willow than anything else. It’s an easy read, entertaining , not overly elaborated which somehow add to its charm. After this first year of adaptation to the academy I expect to see more action and a deep character development of any of the secondary characters.
I read Hybrid Academy: The Complete Collection, a three-book series, with Hybrid Academy: Year One being the first book. I enjoyed meeting Max in book One. Max is a young witch-wolf shifter. Like most young women her age, she struggles with self-esteem and is trying desperately to understand who she is and where she fits in her crazy new world. Then again, not many young women at that age have figured out their awesomeness, which makes Max, short for Maxine, quite relatable.
L.C. Mortimer does a great job of pulling the reader right in. At the beginning of each book, Max takes you through a short checklist of her life and declares, "My name is Max, and this is my life." That brief introduction is a wonderful lead to the book.
Max and her friends are in the throes of self-discovery on many levels. Hybrid Academy is where they are supposed to learn to hone their powers and unique gifts. It is supposed to be a safe haven. It ends up being anything but which is a lot for a group of 19 to 20 something-year-olds to handle.
Through the twists, suspense, mysteries, lots of drama, humorous moments, and a hint of romance, the storyline is engaging. You will want to read the rest of the books in this series!

This is a great start to this new series. For me it starts a little slow but it is picking up and I look forward to where the author will take us next in this adventure. Great plot and story line that has some wonderful world building. Characters are written well and starting to see them develop a little already. Can't wait to read more of this series. Recommend reading.

Sheltered all her life, now Maxine has a chance to find her place in the world. Since her parents disappeared 10 years ago, Maxine has been sheltered by her grandmother. They have been hidden in a cabin deep in the woods in a small rural town. Max comes from a magic family, but at nineteen she has no magical abilities. She comes home one day and her cabin is destroyed, and her grandmother gone. Her Aunt Erin, who she hasn't seen in 10 years, appears and says her grandmother is dead and Maxine is in danger. Her solution? To enroll Maxine in an academy for hybrids (people with two supernatural abilities). But Max's only goal is to find her grandmother because she doesn't thinks she's dead. But Erin spirits her away to the academy and there Max finally finds friends and some magical ability. But surprises are in store for her. And is there a correlation between the disappearance of her parents 10 years ago and her grandmother's disappearance. And why does she suddenly have magical ability? Max has lived with her Mémère in a small town since her parent died mysteriously. She is a hybrid, a half-witch and half-shifter. They live a quiet and secluded life. Max has been taught magic but she cannot use it nor can she shift into her wolf. She has a familiar, like all witches, a cat named Mr. Boo. Coming home from work after a hard day being fired or quitting (it was a little of both), Max finds her small house ransacked and Mémère missing. She grabs all the essential papers, spell book and Mr. Boo. Her Aunt Erin shows up and takes her to a supernatural school called Hybrid Academy. A school/college for supernatural beings of mixed heritage. Max makes friends for the first time. She learns to stand up for herself and others. Gaining confidence, she learns magic. There are good witches and bad witches. Max learns a secret about her familiar. At the end of her first year, Max feels her Mémère, may still be alive and wants to try to find her. We shall have to see what is instore for Max and her friends in year two.
ONE THRILLING EXPERIENCE!!! Fantastic! Mortimer brought down the house with this engaging little gem. Producing well rounded scenario's so intense you feel the pulse racing, electrifying hum running rampant through your viens. Mortimer ropes every emotion you have spinning a vortex that draws you in so deeply, your only focus is on this gem playing out before you. Twisted, twinned and put through the wringer, stretched to unbelievable limits, riveted on a razors edge. The skepticism, difficulty, drama, loss, danger and suspense surges as tension spirals thrusting this bad boy to life beautifully. Hurdling the trials and tribulations with a slew of plot twists, sharp turns and thin lines fusing this baby together piece by piece. The characters are realistic, intriguing and authentic with just enough flaws to add diversity. The scenes are so vividly detailed it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them. Fantastic job Mortimer, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
Max lives with her grandmother after she lost her parents her job is awful her boss worse she's treated differently because she doesn't have any magic. But she's about to find out what she really is and that there is more out there then just witches, vamps and all kinds of hybrid shifters. Her Gran disappears her aunt says she's dead and that she needs to go to the Hybrid Academy. But with mean girls and intitled bullies and teachers that may not have her best interest at heart she will have to figure out who her friends are quick. This book was just okay I wanted to like it more but the man character Max let's people walk all over her until almost the end of the book and how she couldn't figure out what was going on with Henry well it was kinda obvious. I just felt that Max kinda droned on and on about how everything in her world was so tuard and how she couldn't do this or that she was just frustrating as a main character.

The story is good and the characters are ok, but they could have a bit more depth. She said she was close to her grandmother, but didn't know much about her other than she does magic and tried to teach Max to no avail. When her grandmother disappears, their house ransacked, her life is changing fast. The only thing she still has is her familiar, a cat named Mr. Boo. Her aunt is extremely powerful, a coven leader, and alumni of the Academy. Max can not do magic and cannot shift. She goes to classes and practices so she can do baby magic. She finally learns to shift in a crisis to save her friend. I hope to read the other books to see where it leads. Her aunt Erin tells her that her grandmother is dead, she believes her grandmother was kidnapped and she needs to find out what really happened to her parents and see where her relationship with Henry will go. I requested an advanced reader copy from Booksprout and am under no obligation to leave this review.
This story stayed on the surface very rarely diving deeper in plot or character development. The author obviously wanted to tackle the issue of bullying and standing up for oneself, but it was heavy handed and didn’t seem consistent with what we had learned of Max. The second scene involving bullying did have a funny bit about how the insults didn’t make sense. One big issue I had with this novel was its lack of consistency. One example is that when her Aunt picks her up, Max is dumbfounded by the reveal that there are not only witches but vampires and fairies and other supernatural creatures. Later, she discusses that her Grandmother had briefly talked about shifters and that she also worried about demons. Again, she explains that she sits with a group of hybrids at her table for lunch...at Hybrid Academy. An in-depth editing should be done on future books.
This book was interesting, but lacked on being correct in areas. For instance we know she is a wolf shifter, but yet in one part she said she did not know what she shifted into. These type of things is why I gave it only three stars. I do feel teens and young adults will like this story. We have Maxine who has lost her parents and her grandmother has been hiding her for years. Then one day when she gets home everything changes. What will she do? Can she accept her Aunt Erin's word? Can she make friends at this academy? Will she learn everything she knows about herself? Will she finally be able to do magic?

I enjoyed this story. It starts out with Max in the town that her and Gramma live in but as the story goes on there seemed to be quite a few hints that not is all that it seems. Then Gramma disappears and the Aunt show up and off Max goes to the Academy to hide out and learn about her heritage she knew nothing about. But why? The story was easy at read and with just enough background to wet my appetite for more. There was light school bullying, mystery, and questions on who is really the bad guy. There were a lot of mysteries related to Max and her family introduced in this first book that makes me need to read the second one to see what will be revealed next. The characters were fun and I thought the story was more a light read then dark and gloomy as some in this genre.
First I want to start off by saying I enjoyed this book and I will probably read the next one.
But this book had alot of issues for me. Repetitive sentences, very 2 dimensional characters, no real emotion in the writing, not alot of descriptions.
The whole book was very 2 dimensional. But I have no clue was this the first book by a new author? It read like it. Still enjoyed it. I want more details, more clue for the mystery.... it wasn't thought out all the way. Kinda felt rushed. I am definitely going to give this author another try, the thought process of the storyline is something I thought was great, but it lacked in detail and emotion.
Max a half witch/half shifter is raised in seclusion by her Memere after her parents were mysteriously killed. After one day returning home to find it destroyed and her grandmother missing an aunt she didn’t know comes to claim her then sends her to the Hybrid Academy. She takes her familiar Mr Boo with her. All she really want is to find her grandmother. But as she learns this academy is too much like high school. Max makes friends for the first time and learns secrets along the way while struggling to make her way in this unfamiliar world that she is now a part of. Fun and exciting

Max has been living in hiding with her grandmother since her parents were killed in an accident 10 years ago. Max is a hybrid, a half-witch and half-shifter but cannot seem to use magic or shift. Since she is a witch, she does have a familiar named Mr. Boo, a cat.
When she had an issue at work, she was fired. But when she came home, her grandmother was missing and her Aunt Erin took her to an Academy for hybrids. As she begins to find friends and gain a little confidence, her magic skills improve. With her skills coming in, can she search for her grandmother she believes may still be alive?
This book is awesome. It has great character details, an awesome story line, character background, amazing world building and the over all storyline is just great. It is fast paced, action packed, full of suspence, mystery, adventure, a little romance, loads of magic, and paranormal on any level. This is a must read series that I can't wait to finish, a new author that I've never read and will be reading more of, and a new series that is a must have.

An orphan girl with a magical heritage, who has no magic of her own. When she loses her grandmother and is whisked by her aunt to a magical school, she finds out that the school is for Hybrids and she is a half witch - half wolf.
Finding herself without powers, without friends and without any support, she starts her journey befriending a fairy and a boy who doesn't seem to have any classes.
An interesting book and a fun one to start a series with. Hoping for a great series ahead.

I love a tough heroine. Someone who takes charge and stands up for herself! I didn't find that in this book. Max let's everyone walk all over her. Besides that, the death of her grandmother was essentially just glossed over. Like, what?!?! Your whole life is turned upside down and you have no strong reaction to it?! I was completely bored, but kept reading because it HAS to get better, right?!?! Wrong. I stopped reading when the animal she shifted into turned out to be a HAMSTER. Super underwhelming. Would not recommend.
Life has turned upside down for Max now that her parents and her grandmother are gone. An aunt sends her to a hybrid academy where the typical mix of kids and teachers are found. She finds her way into the magical world and even learns she can do a few things. The characters are just starting to unfold and Max has a good start on her backstory. Waiting to read the next storyline and see if they get more interesting. Pretty good so far.

First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also this author is new to me, but I hope it won't be for long.
Wow!!! What a gr8 YA story. Max's grandmother is kidnapped. She learns that her life is secret, & she isn't fully human. She's a lonely, young woman until she goes to the academy, & here she makes new friends. I can't wait to read the next story. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
This was great. Max was a wonderful character. Though she had some self confidence issues in the beginning, forced to leave everything she knew, she truely shined in the end. She found the strength to find her inner witch as well as her wolf. Th rest of the characters were helpful to her finding this. This was a great start to a great series, I can already tell.
