"Breathwork" helps you to explore how you breathe and contains a 21 day program that teaches different breathing techniques. The author mostly based her selection of techniques on those used in yoga and martial arts traditions. She only included those that are safe and do-able for any age or physical ability. She started by explaining the benefits of conscious breathing. She explained the main categories of breathing techniques (like using using only the belly or rib cage, different timing for different parts of the breath, or holding one's breath) and what each type of technique will help achieve. This was very helpful for me as I was confused by all the different options that people mention.

She then got into the specifics of her program. She described several stretches that you will do for the first 5 minutes of the 10 minute morning session. She described how to do the body scan and tension meditation that you will do for the first 5 minutes of the 10-20 minute evening session. For each day, she described the breathing exercise for the morning and the evening, and they generally built on what was learned in the previous sessions. The first week focused on the physical aspects of breathwork--learning belly breathing, rib cage breathing, resistance breathing, and wave breathing. The second week focused on using breath to enhance awareness of our physical self, emotions, and thoughts. The third week focused on overall well-being and how breathwork can enhance our sense of purpose.

I have to admit I got bored with the stretching and the body scan parts of the exercises. I understand their purpose, but it adds time to what is already pushing my current "be still" tolerance levels. I also could already do everything in week 1, so that felt very basic. So it's a good book for a complete beginner because it is basic and explains things. But I suspect you're most likely to complete the 3 weeks of exercises if you're already used to spending 20-30 minutes a day stretching or meditating.

This is not a simple how to, with one, two, three steps to breathing better. No, this is a workbook designed for you to work through several times a day for a period of twenty-one days. It is not a book you sit down and read. It is not a book you pick up in the evening to put you to sleep. It is a book for you to use to make your life better.

As the author points out. “Going, going, going without stopping, the way so many of us live our lives, does not allow for introspection. Whether during the poignant moments between breaths or during the longer pauses after practice, Breathworks can awaken you to yourself, others, nature, and your sense of purpose.

What could be better? Don’t we all want to be able to be in touch with ourselves, others, nature, and most important of all, why we are here?

For three weeks the author takes the reader on a journey of self-awareness through the art of breathing. I, for one, did not realize there were so many different ways to breath. Nor that each way, produces a different reaction within the body. I thought you took air in and let it out, sometimes faster and sometime slower. But that is not all there is to this breathing thing. It is at the same time much more complicated and easier. Moselle brings her years of training to bear on our behalf showing us how to do each step. And in so doing helps us become more focused and aware of what is happening within and without.

If you want to calm your anxieties, breath better, open your awareness, and even get in touch with your emotions, Moselle shows you how, one step at a time, one day at a time.

“Yoga postures work on you from the outside in. The breath works on you from the inside out.”
-Valerie Moselle, Breathwork

The preceding statement sums up the benefit of breathwork well. By implementing a simple daily practice, you will quickly notice changes within your very being - starting from the inside and working their way outward. If you can couple your breathwork with a basic yoga practice so much the better, it’s akin to burning the candle at both ends.

The Breathwork book does a tremendous job of explaining why breathwork is important, how breath works, and outlining a basic 21 day practice.

In fact, the presentation and practice are so simple that it may be easy to overlook the importance and benefits of the regular practice itself. On the other hand, if you’re unaccustomed to a breathwork practice, as I was, it may not be so easy to remain consistent, at least in the beginning. However, if this is this case - stick with it. The first week is the most challenging, the second week you’ll likely fall into a comfortable rhythm, and by the third week the practice will be second nature.

Overall Breathwork is a nicely designed book which provides comprehensive information on breathing techniques. I highly recommend this book for beginners who are interested but are unsure of the benefits or where to start, as well as those more established practitioners who may desire to get back to basics.

As someone who has several family members with respiratory illnesses, breathing is not taken for granted in my family. So I was excited to find a book that used proper breathing not just as a way to ensure good health, but also as a tool to relax and center yourself as a person. This book provides a three week course to the reader to learn proper breathing and use breathing techniques to support good health, including helping with insomnia, reducing asthma side effects and helping to relieve stress. The course will help the reader focus and gain additional strength, but also reduce stress and help cope with everyday life and its hickups.
Overall, a recommend this book to readers that are interested in natural remedies and especially to readers that looking for ways to reduce stress and anxiety in their lives.

I thought this was excellent. About a third is essentially an intro and instruction, and the author is very clear and comprehensive. The rest is the breathwork, and it includes illustrations and add'l advice and guidance. You'll need to devote about 30 min/day for at least 3 weeks, which is when the most benefits kick-in. Highly recommended.

I really appreciate the advanced copy for review!!

I didn’t finish this. I do yoga every day so it felt a little redundant. I also didn’t find the layout was super easy to follow and I’m someone who already does a lot of breathing exercises so if this were for novice I feel like it wouldn’t be that intuitive. I think something like this is better served on an app.
