This book had potential but, in my opinion, it fell flat.

If I got a dollar every time that "after all" and "absolutely" were used in this book, I would consider reading the next in the series.

I wasn’t prepared to like this book and was skeptical about reading about witches and wizards and a paranormal environment! But I thought I’d give it a try and view this as a humorous tale and that worked! Now I’m hooked because of the plot and development of the characters and will continue with the series!

The setup

Awesome. Loved the plot but we have only just started to get into it! Plus what happened to the money in the dead man's accounts. The story is enhanced by the characters (witches, living in a magical community) and they have appeared in our mind's eye - fully formed. Plus the arrival of her familiar looks like it's going to provide some light relief to the main storyline. He sounds very prim and proper with just a dash of manipulation (very British in fact) and I love his name. Hope the next book takes us further into why her parents have been set up and why they agreed to the plea bargain. Was the lives of their daughters at sake?
She has been studying to become a Healer but the news that her parents have been arrested for money laundering has her rushing home to her sisters side. Who accused them? What is the evidence? As she tries to make sense of it, keep up her sisters spirits and run the family business of chocolate making, she is unable to make sense of things. Then when she stumbles on the body of one one the workers she is further thrown into a state. How did he get in? Who killed him? A plea bargain, a confiscated factory, a conman, a predator and new friends are all wrapped up into a great read. Will they find out how the man died? Will they start to unravel why her parents have been targeted?

First in a series...

This is a semi-spinoff from the Western Woods series by Samantha Silver, and actually features a couple of cameo appearances by the witches from those books. This story comes somewhere between books five and six of that series and is actually referenced in the latter a little.
This one features the Numa family, three witches whose parents have been framed for money laundering, causing them to lose the family chocolate business. That is the overarching story of the series.
This particular book focuses on the murder of one of the employees of the chocolate factory, which may or may not be linked somehow!
Meg, our heroine, is a healer in training, and the middle child of the family. She is also the one who steps up and takes control when everything falls apart.
This is very much a typical Silver mystery, set in the same world as most of her other paranormal series. It’s helpful if you’ve read the first five Western Woods books, because the characters appear here, but it isn’t essential.
A fun cozy read for you to curl up with.

It's ok..

The main story is that Megan's parents are accused of fraud and within 48 hours Chief Enforcer Lipo manages to extract a guilty plea and take the family business from them while locking up her parents.

Secondly a murder takes place in the factory after her parents arrest and Lupo is after the girls. They decide to find the killer.

It could do with some development of the story really. It's all a little weak and the murder is rather too easily solved. There's no logical reasoning why the murderer is treated with leniency when the fraud isn't.

There's obviously more to it but it's skimmed over. It would help to have a better balance between the treatment of the two crimes.. or at least more information about the supposed fraud. Presumably solving the fraud case is going to be the series driving story in which case a more thorough understanding should be given.

This was a quick read but an interesting book. The three sisters have different paranormal abilities and Megan, training to be a healer, rushes home when she finds out her parents have been arrested for fraud. The story continues with a murder and the subsequent issues in trying to identify the murderer. That was done but the parents' incarceration hasn't been solved yet. someone has framed them but who knows!

Definitely worth reading the next book in the series. And there is another whole series about the itches that helped them for a nearby town. Actually quite a prolific writer!

Her parents own a chocolate factory in the paranormal world. Then someone is murdered. She must figure out who how and why about the murder as well as try and improve her parents innocence. Follow along as her and her sisters seek the truth. This is one storyline of multiple books series in this magical world. Check them all out

Cozy mystery about witches in a magical parallel world

It is a nice story. I am reading because I have found plot gaps between books in western woods series where thing seemed to have progressed/happened off screen so to speak. Apparently this is a crossover series and I may find the gaps here.

Also I was disappointed to get to the end and realise the mystery as a whole isn't solved and carries on in the next book.

It is a decent book, worth reading, but not going to change the world hence 3/5

Excellent!

I absolutely loved this story! Megan and her sisters were fun and the story was engaging. Three sisters suddenly have to try to figure out why their parents have been arrested for fraud and solve the mysterious murder of a warlock at their parents factory. The girls are in way over their heads and if the chief enforcer catches them they'll be put in jail too! A really excellent story!

I found this book hard to get into

I had just finished the western woods series and was expecting more of the same and it was in the fact that witch finds body and has to solve a murder. But it just seemed to drag and I had to force myself to finish. I had downloaded the rest of the series but now in going to find a new book to read.

Tasty start to begin with.

This book was a good way to start a new series. I loved Megan and her sisters. They remind me so much of the girls from Western Woods. Megan and Andrea remind me of Ellie and Tina, while Ashley is a lot like Amy. Hopefully they will be in future books as well.

Bad guys everywhere

Wrongly accused and railroaded for fraud, a murdered man who scammed people, an overzealous enforcer, and sisters on the case. Lots of action, magic, and drama.

Nice writing

These are short nicely written books in a series. They are best If they are read in order. They have a plot that goes through all of the books although each book is a story unto itself. I enjoy her writing style and the characters.

Another series in a different paranormal town and family that gets involved in solving murder mysteries. There is a connection to the characters in Western Woods but the interaction is great.
