T. Jackson King (Tom) is an Amazon bestselling science fiction and urban fantasy author. He is a lifelong reader of SciFi/Fantasy stories and his favorite authors have included Darynda Jones, BR Kingsolver, K.F. Breene, Martha Carr, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Andre Norton, J. K. Rowling, Ann Christy, Lois McMaster Bujold and Ursula LeGuin. Outside of fantasy and science fiction he has enjoyed the novels of Rudyard Kipling, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle, and the urban fantasy crime mysteries of Darynda Jones.

Tom began writing SF novels at age 38, when he discovered he had read all the Human-Alien first contact or encounter novels in his local library. So he decided to write his own, thanks to an overactive, very visual imagination. Those early years produced FIRST CONTACT and RETREAD SHOP. When the New York City publishing houses ignored his later novels because they had no Hollywood tie-in, he went to several small presses, then began self-publishing as an Indy author in 2011. He loves that readers in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are some of his most loyal readers!

Before becoming a bestselling author, Tom worked in a radiocarbon lab at UC Riverside and earned an MA degree in Archaeology from UCLA. His interests in ancient history, ancient cultures and journalism got him several government agency jobs that led him to roam the raw landscape of the Western United States where he worked as a federal archaeologist and newspaper journalist.

Tom lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA and hangs with a group of smart and tolerant Westerners. Divorce taught him to smile a lot and to work at being a Nice Guy. Which earned him the love of his wife Sue. Still, he is pretty weird. Has been since fourth grade when he began reading SciFi. Since then, he and Authority have rarely been in agreement. Readers are welcome to visit his T. Jackson King page.

Read on a whim

First book by this author, recommended by Amazon, about a seventy year old hero. I was curious, since I too am over seventy. A very gratifying read and probably interesting to all the other old farts out there!

Interesting take on an old guy getting paranormal powers. Thought the writing was a bit rough like a first novel. But the ideas were interesting and the final confrontation was a bit of a surprise. I enjoyed the book.

A book for Geezers

Being a Gezzer this book was an excellent read. The antagonist developed well right from the start and blasted on from there.

An unusual urban fantasy novel that focuses on an elderly 70 year old guy who suddenly is gifted with psychic powers that allow him to kill attacking muggers and yet also Heal with the touch of his hands. Recommended for all lovers of paranormal and urban fantasy.

This is a urban fantasy slash science fiction novel that is a bit outside of the mainstream ones. At least in my experience.

As the book blurb say, a 70 year old geezer experience a sudden white flash after which he experiences supernatural powers. Much to the dismay of the muggers that was trying to rob him.

Obviously this old, and rather likable, geezer tries to figure out what the f… happened to him and, not surprisingly, during the course of his investigations he stumbles over a somewhat unbelievable number of different bad guys that either tries to rob him, one of his friends or by other means draws the wrath of the, now, kick-ass old geezer.

This is something I like about this book. This old geezer doesn’t have some oh-my-god-what’s-happening or all-this-violence-is-so-terrible meltdown. Luckily this book is not written by any of those modern Hollywood script writers that ruins everything they touch. Bad guys in this book gets what they deserve which is usually a rather painful death.

During his adventures the geezer also discovers that he is not alone having been bestowed with extraordinary powers and, so far at least, I have to say that I like this Ansgard character that befriends him.

I’d say that this book is a wee bit a cross between urban fantasy and science fiction. Jack is getting a full set of DNA. RMI and whatnot scans and there is some attempt to explain his mysterious powers. However, there seems to be more into it than just science. The fantasy element becomes more pronounced later in the book when a ancient evil is introduced.

Overall I did quite like the book. It’s a simple read but it was generally fun to read. Especially when Jack is in kick-ass mode.

I’ve already picked up the second book in the series and I am eager to see how the story develops.

The premise is genre-novel. A 70-year old protagonist rather than a teenager won't slot into Hero's Journey as conveniently as a teenager, or at least you'd think that.

However, the character setting doesn't match the character's journey, as an experienced man is made to ignore the common sense the character was described as having acquired, in numerous plot-setting situations, for no particular in-story reason. Obviously the reasons for that relate to exposition and plot travel. That pulled me out of the story.

Forcing your otherwise competent character go full Tropic Thunder in order to squeeze the plot into a certain direction, and being quite obviously unsure of how to write the main character's relationship with the female characters from a throwaway side character to the main characters in a commercially viable way, in light of the specific cultural expectations of the younger Californian readers, severely depletes the potential of the initially novel setting.

Borderline Fantasy

I just finished reading the first four books of the series and I must say the author does a wonderful job of creating strong characters for the main characters at least. The minor characters aren’t quite as well flushed out but that I think is understandable. The story is a bit unique and it does keep you entertained although the format can get a little repetitive book to book. Still I enjoyed all four books and I’m looking for the fifth one to come outIn the near future. If you’re looking for a nice kickback escape book to relax with over a couple of Columbian roast coffee this is a good choice. And it makes me long to return to Santa Fe.

Killer Geezer Kills It!

I loved that the hero in this book is a “Geezer”, that is an old guy. Is it a coincidence that I am also a Geezer?! Totally coincidental! ;). It’s very nice to see all the old Geezer stereotypes completely overturned.
So if you want to see Geezer revenge & to also see the bad guys get their just rewards then get this book now, you WILL be VERY glad that you did! (Plus, there are several sequels to love & enjoy too!!). What’s not to love?! :)

Naive narrative

Yarn moves along at a crisp pace. Wish fulfillment for the Silver Sneakers set. Characterizations and motivations are naive, without reaching a level of Shining Bastion of Goodness, like the Demon Accords or Monster Hunter International. Not quite sure what the author intended, unless this was a long first act setting up subsequent entries in a series. Did not work for me.

Upbeat story

I don't offer 5 stars to anything but Hugo/Nebula winners.
This is an upbeat, boomer, urban fantasy story.
There are exact duplications of a paragraph of description.
But the author show solid and robust story crafting skills.
Since this is the first I have read by him I cannot offer an opinion on if you will like him.
In some ways this resembles a standard genre romance read. A nice vacation from "now". Enjoy.

Too many flaws

I wanted to like this book, but the flaws became too numerous. The MC makes far too many mistakes in trusting others and being obvious in his actions to not risk action from authorities. And traveling by airplane with thousands of dollars in suitcases is almost guaranteed to be detected. Who does not know this?
