Okay, this is the first of a two part story, and the author gives an open challenge to try and figure out the twist.
I LOVE this shit - I do it anyway, but I'm calling a big SPOILER ALERT here:
I'm not going to write a review, I'm going to give my theory and reasons why I think I have figured it out.

So, if you wanna play this game yourself, do not read anything else after this...

Are you sure?

100% percent certain?

Absolutely no doubt in your mind?

Right, that's fair warning, don't you think?

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield

Here's my theory:
Konrath is a clever writer. I'm a fan and I've read quite a bit of his work, so I think it is fair to say that he usually sticks to realism - usually, for the most part, meaning nothing supernatural...I know there are some exceptions, I'm not trying to start an argument, damn it!

Aliens.
Pure and simple - Lori was abducted by aliens. And they are doing experiments on her, so she is still alive, but forever altered.

Why?
Well, the clues that got me thinking:
The training Fabler was forcing on Presley - why the welding helmet? Why the strange conditions?
Here's the thing, a) the abductions will probably take place at night, and b) Fabler is uncertain about conditions because it doesn't take place in any known place - in other words, he needs her to be ready for anything.

The Tabloid magazine and Whitley Strieber book she found in his room:
Alien abductions? And - I do hope it is not my pure ignorance here - I've only read one book by Strieber and it was about aliens.

The Milla Jovovich movie that was scary:
I love this woman and, while she may be best known for her roles in the RESIDENT EVIL movies, there is one terrifyingly scary movie I have seen her in. It is called THE FOURTH KIND and it is about alien abduction - and if you have seen this movie, I'm sure you know why I found it so terrifying!

The white suits with the overly big masks:
Well, shit, if you can't figure that one out on your own...

So, I may be way off on this, but that is where my head went when I was 38% into the book, and nothing after that changed my mind. If Mr. Konrath fooled me, I will take my hat off to him and say: Well done you!

Will read the second one soon.
And then I will write a review.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

"Disjointed"

Not what I expected at all. Weird writing style. At the start I was eager to learn what happened to Lori, but by halfway the story had been stretched paper-thin and everything dragged. I just wanted to get to the end. Of course, there WAS no end, no resolution, no comprehension. It was another cliffhanger to encourage me to buy the next book. I hate that ploy.

My mind is already blown away with this book and the second and concluding part is yet to be published. It isn't that you need to get your head around a lot of characters, primarily there are only three but all of them are complex and seriously unbalanced in some way.
The core of the story centres around Lori, who doesn't even make an appearance except by name. Lori is missing presumed murdered by her husband Fabler.
Fabler had been released from prison after only two years and now seems to be on an obsessional mission in his fully military-style converted home.
Lori's brother, Pilgrim or Grim as everyone calls him, who served in the Special Operations Unit with Fabler, is convinced that he killed his sister. He is trying to regain some sort of control back over his life to focus on finding out the truth.
Brought into this mix is outsider Marna Presley, who is hired by Grim to apply to an advert put out by Fabler for a woman with very specific looks and talents. Presley is again military trained and with a few adjustments to her physical appearance matches to requirements.
What follows is bizarre in the most hypnotic and compelling way. I couldn't stop reading this unpredictable addictive book. I wanted to know what was behind closed doors. Why Fabler was holding something huge a secret and what had happened to Lori?
They are all strong characters there for very different reasons, hopefully when they are all there for Lori things may really begin to take off. It is pure adrenaline rush from page one to be continued when book 2 is published.
Konrath is always a strong favourite of mine and I am loving this new direction that he is taking me in. The good news is it isn't long until the final book is published. Totally fascinated by this!

ADMIN NOTE: This is a partial review of one portion of a “Duology.” My comments are subject to updates as I find more information. Konrath is an excellent writer who on occasion, likes to play with readers. Genesis is an example of one of those occasions. The novel can be read as entertainment or as the invitation to a game and discussion. This review will focus on one pass, one-time examination of the story as entertainment. True, the story ends in a cliffhanger, but Konrath provides a warning of such an “ending.”

Genesis by J. A. Konrath is Book One in a series titled “What Happened to Lori.” Konrath gives the book a tongue-twisting description; the author calls his latest work a “Mind-Blowing Twist Thriller Duology,” confirming for me there is more originality to come. The description is one I have never read. J. A. Konrath is one of my Go-To Writers, meaning I read everything I stumble across by him in notifications or browsing. I haven’t read everything he has written. If I do so, it will be by accident. He has written too many books for me to keep up. I could make his stories a reader project. The problem is his creations can be intense, and I don’t want to suffer reader burn-out. I would rather enjoy his books as I encounter them.

Readers might want to note that Konrath has an actionable offer attached to this novel. In an author email, he has offered Book Two of the series free if a reader posts a review of Genesis to a social media site by July 31. Readers who post should forward the link to Konrath, and he will make Book Two free.

In Konrath’s words, here is a challenge which I INTEND to meet. I am not sure I will be able to figure out what happened to Lori before July 31. I may give up on the answer and only post a review by the end of July to get a free Book Two. In Author Note 2, before the story begins, Konrath writes:

“Book 2, the conclusion, will be available very soon. But if you read closely, pay attention to details, and you're really, really smart, you could figure out what happened to Lori before Book 2 is released. There are hints, clues, and even some cleverly concealed spoilers. It won't be easy. You might even become impatient. Frustrated. Enraged. Remember… it's only a story… Remember to post a spoiler warning before you share your theories. And make sure you're correct. Because you're probably wrong.” (Kindle locations 39-48).

Author Note One refers to a diple. It is good to know how Konrath uses the diple to understand the structure of the story as far as character contributions to thought and dialogue. The knowledge gained is one of many fun facts which could make you feel superior at gatherings of self-important novice writers.

Konrath’s advice to those presuming to know about the fate of Lori is to be careful because we (readers) are probably wrong. That presumption makes Genesis an activity book as well as enjoyable entertainment. I may have to read Genesis more than once. I must find a way to get into the mind of Konrath. There is a training program available. The author has written a series of Mystery Puzzle Books. The mystery is presented in a set containing five novels: How, Why, Who Where, and When. Stop a Murder---Answer Book is Book 6 in the series. Mystery novels sell for USD 0.99 on Amazon but are also available at no cost on Kindle Unlimited. The Answer Book is not available on Kindle Unlimited and sells for USD 2.99.

I have only read one of the Puzzle Books (awe-inspiring – five stars!) and I could not resist buying the Answer Book. I intend to complete the other Puzzle Books before venturing a guess about Lori’s fate. There is something to be said for knowing the mind of an opponent. I won’t find clues about Lori in the Puzzle Books, but I will gain an insight into the author’s head.

There are not a lot of characters in Genesis. I like the name Grim, even though it is really Pilgrim. Grim is Lori’s brother and wants to know what happened to her. Daily alcohol intake has slowed Grim’s efforts and raced through his savings. There are many ways to measure how far down the survival index an alcoholic can go. When butter (it may have been margarine) becomes a primary food source, the bottom of the index is not far away.

Readers will focus mainly on Fabler, Lori’s husband. Fabler and Grim were probably friends in an earlier life. They were close as highly skilled military Special Operators in Iraq. Going on death-defying missions where each of the pair was responsible for the other’s back tended to tighten the bonds of friendship to a higher degree. Even during those operations, there were signs of developing stress between the two. After the end of obligatory military service, the two dabbled in mercenary ventures. Lori’s disappearance broke the bond between the two. Pilgrim testified against Fabler in a trial that sent Fabler to prison for two years. How did Fabler get out after two years? The answer is revealed early in the novel, but the answer to the question is not the central mystery.

Was Fabler guilty of murdering Lori? Did Pilgrim frame Fabler for Lori’s Murder/disappearance? Next up, the mystery of Marna Presley. Readers should accept the name; it might be wrong, but for this novel, Presley is good enough. Marna is the female equivalent of Pilgrim and Fabler; she also has combat experience and unusual skill sets. Fabler is up to something after his release from prison. Whatever Fabler is up to, he needs an assistant, so he places an ad on Craigslist. Pilgrim learns of this need and decides to monitor Fabler very closely. Think hidden cameras, illegal surveillance stuff, and all the good things ex-mercenaries seem to be qualified to acquire and use.

Fabler hires Marna and begins a training program like few I have heard about. The program, the dialogue (and diples) between the two drive my interest in this novel. Fabler doesn’t know that Marna is getting two salaries. Pilgrim is the person who steered Marna to Fabler; Marna makes periodic reports to Pilgrim. Marna has her separate agenda, one which is another mystery for the reader to juggle.

The book examines PTSD, how could it not? Pilgrim suffers from the disease and has turned to alcoholism, a substitute disease. Fabler suffers from the disease and has an interesting way of attempting to cope. It is not music, but it does involve some audio files. Marna has PTSD. After all, she was also in combat, but PTSD is not central to her mystery. The Watcher is undoubtedly a Wacko, but readers don’t know who she/he/it might be. The would-be assassins of Presley may not have PTSD; they like killing for killing’s sake. With such a broad concentration of non-normal people affected in different ways by PTSD and other mental aberrations, readers are adrift as they look for any reliable information.

Welcome to the Konrath world. This novel is a five-star Amazon read on the surface alone. Readers who start scratching below surfaces will find more fun. I highly recommend this novel as an excellent read and, on another level, a possible activity book.

Off to my voluntary training program.

5 Crazy Stars

What Happened to Lori Book 1 pulls you in slowly, bit by bit. Before you know it you’re ensnared in a plot you really know nothing about. The characters are compelling, a dash of crazy and a bit of ludicrousness. Good times for all. Book 2 cannot get here soon enough!

First of all, I HATE cliff-hangers. Because Konrath is the author, I made an exception and bought this one anyway. It was well-written (no surprise) but, in addition to the cliff-hanging, the diple <> made me want to hurt someone. So now I'm hooked and have to read the second book. I hope you're happy, Konrath. I rate this one 4.4 stars only because it was a cliff-hanger (don't forget the diple); otherwise, it would have been 5 stars.

This is like Twin Peaks all over again!!!!

OMG.... I can’t wait until August!!!!

Although I love the cliffhanger idea, waiting for part 2 is going to kill me.
I have a love/hate relationship with this type of story structuring.
On the one hand, it is an effective way to get readers to put out for the end (or the next chapter) of the story. On the other hand, it is annoying as hell (Of course I want to know what happens next.... duh!)

In terms of being an effective hook for readers? That’s hard for me to answer as I am already a JA Konrath disciple. I read everything he writes. That being said, “What happened to Lori” is what I love most about Konrath’s stories. You have a terrific mix of intriguing characters, nail biting suspense, action, and sarcastic humour à la Harry McGlade. What more can you ask for?

Quick Theory:

I’m not going to get into my theories about what I think happened to Lori. I will just say that I am leaning towards extraterrestrial beings but I would rather be fooled and blown away by the author (I am holding out for that WTF moment). As an aside, I do have a feeling that a big clue to what is going on is the computer lingo at the beginning and the end of the story.

Lastly, the syntax and punctuation completely worked for me. It seemed odd for about .5 seconds but the story completely absorbs so that this new way of explaining the character’s thoughts just blends in with the rest. I did feel it was seamless, and helped to move the narrative forward. It really became second nature by the end of the first chapter.

There is one quote in the story I absolutely loved:
“I love this idea so much, it can’t possibly be good...”

If the author was thinking this when he wrote “What happened to Lori”, he was completely wrong. It is just too good.

Disclaimer: this book is the first of two parts and ends on a serious cliffhanger. Mr. Konrath has been very upfront about this, but I am still seeing reviews from people who are butthurt about it so it bears repeating. If you can't handle it, wait for Part 2 to be released or move on.

I am a big fan of Joe Konrath and a new book from him immediately goes to the front of the line. This is a bit of a departure because it doesn't explicitly connect to his universe of characters which makes it a great jumping on point for new readers.

What Happened to Lori is a mystery story, and the question is right in the title. We know Lori is missing but that is about it. Lori's husband Fabler is consumed by grief and guilt and funnels his energy in to a bizarre plan. Meanwhile, Lori's brother Grim is convinced that Fabler killed Lori and has his own plans in motion against Fabler. The mysterious Pressley is in the middle, working with (and possibly against) both men for her own reasons.

This is a long book but also a fast read. Information is teased out constantly and the twists make What Happened to Lori impossible to put down. The book is broken up in to short sections by character and this also helps the readability. When I reached a stopping point, I would think "It is only a couple of pages, I'll read the next section," and next thing I knew it was an hour later.

The last couple of pages made me laugh out loud. You will know what I mean when you get there.

What Happened to Lori is another home run from Joe Konrath. I am hoping Part 2 can live up to Part 1 and eagerly await the conclusion of the story. Highly recommended, 5 stars.

What a crazy ride. The book is full of tense and mysterious situations. The characters are super interesting. They are weird in their own way and each one has a back story that's very very interesting.

The book uses a new style of writing where the thoughts of each character are a part of the dialogue and that adds even more tautness of the tension in the book. Like you can look into the heads of the characters and view the story from their point of view. It's innovative!

They story will get resolved in part two of the book, but book 1 is worth reading for the excellent setup alone. Once you get into the heads of the characters, pages fly!

Can't wait for book to find out What Happened to Lori!

I didn't get very far into this before deleting it at only 4%. The author comes across in notes he makes before it begins as very self-satisfied and a proper clever-trousers. However, that's all very well if your story is a terrific one but for me this isn't. His "smart" way of writing people's thoughts using is just irritating and needless.
At the beginning of almost every chapter we had to sit and reread Lori's answerphone message, which just seems to be a lot of unnecessary filling to me. The daft numbers and nonsense he pins to the start of some chapters too is all a bit silly as well, and I for one can't be bothered trawling through 300+ pages of this.
So I would summarise it as an experiment that just doesn't work, I'm afraid.

A little housekeeping first. This book is free. If you read it, please review it. It is a full length book, but it is a duology, a two book series. I expected a cliff hanger at the end and sure was not disappointed. The author also uses < and > to group thoughts. Kind of like thought clouds in cartoons. These are called "diples". Fabler is in prison for killing his wife, Lori. Three years in, it was found that he was framed by his brother-in-law, Grim, who was a police officer, who was sure that Fabler killed his sister. Lori, was a beautiful blue-eyed redhead. Fabler runs an ad to find another beautiful blue-eyed redhead, who he could train in a military fashion. For what purpose? I wondered that throughout the entire book. Enter Presley, who happens to be on the run from the mob. Wouldn't be as much fun without the mob. Finally, we have the Watcher, whose purpose is never really defined, except, if anyone knows what happened to Lori, it is him. This could be the best book I have read all year. It is certainly different from any other book. Well worth the read and hopefully the 2nd book will be available soon!

Captivating!

I have to admit, at first, I wasn't into it. But I forced myself to keep reading, and man, I am so glad that I did! This author got me, hook, line, and sinker. His character development is on par; you actually start FEELING for all three characters, and you want to feel bad for Doruk while also wanting to choke him... how did Konrath do that?!

And the cliffhanger... aaarrrrggghhhh. Konrath, you brilliant sadist! I HAVE to know. I guess that means I'll be ordering Book 2 as soon as I am able.

I picked this book up because 1) it was free on Amazon and 2) I enjoy a good Konrath novel. It started off a little odd and I wasn't sure about it at first... but once you get in to it, you will find that the story is mainly told from 3 perspectives - Fabler, Lori's husband; Grim, Lori's brother, and Presley, a woman that is hired by Fabler. Great characters, interesting story, and some thrilling action.

Keep in mind this is only Book 1, so it ends in a cliffhanger.... Boo!

Now I'm anxiously waiting for the next book!

Another winner

All the intensity I’ve come to expect from JA Konrath. Perfect pace, character investment almost immediately. One of the best for suspense, and this did not disappoint. I think i have some idea what happened to Lori but I’m sure I’m wrong. I’ve never figured out any of Konrath’s endings before, so I’m sure I won’t now. Similar style to most all he’s written so if you like any of the Jack Daniels books you’ll be happy here.

Fast paced and addictive

I am a big fan of JA Konrath and was very excited to read his newest book. As always I was not disappointed! From the first page I couldn’t put the story down and ate it up like candy! The characters are great, each with their own particular “charm”, the perfect amount of humor, and a cliffhanger that guarantees I’ll be reading part 2 as soon as it’s available so I can find out if my theory is correct!

I love JA Konrath and this story is spectacular! Great characters, great story, love the diples! I don’t know how I am supposed to wait until almost September for book 2! I have some theories about what happened to Lori, but I really do not want to know until I read book 2. And as Mr. Konrath says....I’m probably wrong with my guesses! 😄

And now I wait...

It's a cliffhanger but Konrath is up front about that. If you're a devoted Konrath reader you'll recognize some characteristics in the heros of this thriller and you'll love them all more for their flaws. Classic Konrath style with thrills, humor, and romance. This book is everything I've come to expect and I'm eagerly awaiting the next release.

This is an amazing book. It is written in a way that is exciting and you are always wondering what is going to happen next. I love how the author writes and keeps the entire book interesting. There are some wonderful characters in this book and I am always thinking what could possibly happen next. I was on my edge of the seat throughout the entire book. I want to know what happens in the next book.

Love it

If I could give more stars I definitely would. As a whole this book is amazing. Can't wait for the next one. Yes I would say it ends on a cliff! I was thinking Fabler was a nut. Thinking he might still be. Guess I will determine that in the next book. Kadir and Doruk, the dynamic duo(not!!) are freaking hilarious. Grim just can't seem to get his life back on track. Presley, she's in it for the money and to get back to Brooklyn. When these five finally meet up nothing goes as planned. Thank you Mr. Konrath for a great book!
