Joyful Surrender: A 40-Day Journey to Greater Dependence on Jesus

Rate this book
Stop trying to live in your own strength and learn total dependence on JesusJesus was tested in the wilderness before He was launched into His ministry. He had fasted for 40 days and was physically weak, but passed the test and emerged in the power of the Spirit.

We too have wilderness seasons in our lives – times when we feel isolated and vulnerable. Such times are testing for us too, but this is where the comparison ends.

Often the passage in Matthew Chapter 4 is used to teach believers a set of rules or principles they can follow to avoid the trap of temptation – but surely this is missing the point.

The point of the wilderness is not to be confident in what we can do for ourselves – it reminds us that we can be supremely confident in what Christ has done for us.As we find a deeper understanding of the truth that life is not about us, it’s all about Him, we discover the power and freedom of surrender – joyful surrender!

This 40-day devotional will take you on a journey to a place of greater dependence on Jesus. You will learn…Simple, childlike freedom and obedienceTo trust His leadingTo spend time in the secret place of His presenceThe fearless love that is the greatest expression of the GospelBe brave. Let the fire of God’s love burn brightly in you, through joyful surrender.

Rolland & Heidi Baker are the founders and directors of IRIS Global and have been missionaries for almost 40 years. They took a deliberate decision to associate themselves with the world’s poorest. After many years of ministry in Mozambique, they travel internationally teaching others about the simple power of the Gospel.

I love the Baker's. Their heart for Jesus is so pure and honest. It's simply to love. Love Jesus with everything we have and in doing so allowing Him to lead us in all we do which guides us to love others.

40 one-page devotions guided by a verse of Scripture.

Like most of their books I can never stop at reading it once, so I'll start at page 1 again tomorrow. If you've never read any of their material before this would be a good one to start with as you'll get a flavour for their heart for Jesus and people.

A very inspirational daily devotional that points the reader towards depending on and being closer to God. My favorite devotionals were the third day and the 40th day. Day 3 spoke about giving your life to God, being heart-to-heart with Him, then being able to ask for right things. Aligning myself with God is something I've been trying to do. But I kept missing the connection. This devotional helped me find it. Day 40 spoke about loving God because we're made for Him. We're made to enjoy His company, not just seek His power or gifts. Truthfully, any day that spoke about who God is and receiving His love helped me.

Each day is written by a different person. The days don't disclose whether Heidi or Rolland wrote that devotional, but after a while I think you can tell. Heidi is about the heart, and Rolland is more broad and factual in His views.

Many of the daily messages focus on God's love. Receive it. Give it. Love is the answer, not miracles. Choose Love, not anger or offense. Love changes people. Do His work from love. Unloving behavior causes illness. Be full of God's love and don't stop it from flowing to others. Be revived by God's love. Love God first and sit with Him, before asking God for power or miracles.

Another focus is on knowing God experientially, not just knowing about God. Connect with God to receive joy. Seek Him. Submit or surrender to Him. Don't stop God or box Him in. Connect to the vine to see fruit. Wait on God for strength. Don't let enemy kill God's promises or fruit for you. Be rooted in your relationship with God.

Day 34 really made a point. Loving God isn't about activities such as prayers, and hour long quiet time, or church itself. It's about sitting with Him, relating to God, talking with Him. All the activities are just tools, or religious distractions. We need God's love. If we just do the disciplines, people won't see God's love in us. They'll just see religious devotion, but not God.

All the days give inspiring messages, but I found that they stop short of true instructions. A topic is introduced and discussed and supported by scriptures, but there's no how-to do it. It's Just Do It, as Nike used to say. No steps or exercises to try. It's just up to me to figure out. I needed more, so I'm back to praying for understanding and steps to take in order to connect with God and sit with Him rather than relying on activities.

I sense that the authors know God much better than most people do. They've experienced God in many ways and are speaking from their experience. Both have seen God work in huge ways. Heidi's story about mercy really stuck with me. It's an encouraging book. I just wish it was more instructional, with examples of how-to do what they've done, rather than just words. They opened themselves to God unreservedly. I struggle with that, but these devotionals inspire me to keep trying.

Simple, easy and yet divinely profound.

Heidi Baker is my role model when it comes to having a heart tethered to Jesus.

As we enter this next era for the Kingdom of God, our secret place is even more important.

This quote from the book is what our relationship with ABBA should look like and be.

"If you want to experience the power of God and see lives transformed as a result, the journey begins in the secret place, close to God's heart (tethered to his heart).

It is born out of his all consuming love.

When we are filled with his love to overflowing, then it will begin to flow out of us to others, and the end result will be his love filled power, working through us."

Joyful tears

I loved every moment of the journey. I am blessed by the heart for God, the emphasis on knowing him aside from what he can do! I’m excited to apply it all to my life and relationship!
