Sleepy Hollow Academy #1

Magic And Misconduct

Rate this book

Welcome to Sleepy Hollow University, where the students are supernaturals and danger lurks behind every smile and corner...

Life as a young witch isn't easy, especially when the rest of your family is human.

Sleepy Hollow University is the place I can learn to control my powers and be among other supernaturals.

But academic competition isn't the only kind I face.

With a fae, a vampire, a shifter, and a warlock who should be my enemy all vying for my attention, it's hard to keep my head on academics.

I'm as inexperienced with matters of the heart as I am with magic.

And when one of my suitors is accused of murder, being afraid of what goes bump in the night takes on a whole new meaning.

Note: It includes a strong heroine, four men of mystical backgrounds, mystery, romance, passion and suspense with elements of paranormal, sci-fi, and fantasy.

Absolutely horrible.
The writing was meh, and while the book is written in 1st person, it changes, for a paragraph, multiple times, to third person pov.

The main character was horrible, starts dating one guy, then two more without any of them Knowing. Collin didn't know about the other two, and they didn't know about him. And she's like; "should i tell him? He'll probably be mad."... Honey, if you think he's going to get mad, that's a good indicator, that you're doing something wrong. This wasn't reverse harem. No way. No connection between any of them.

It's a magical school, only time magic happens? Her roomie shifts to her weredog at the end of the book, and she uses her curse magic?.

I read fantasy for the magic, for the impossible.
So not only was the book, bad, boring... It was also misleading. Pretty much everything it's not supposed to be.

No character development, and the the characters were flat.

Book 1

Odd and I'm not sure there is sufficient storyline to keep me interested. I don't like Marina. The guys are ok. 2.0 stars and that's it.

Not bad

Interesting storyline and decent start to the series. Some minor errors but didn’t detract too bad from the story. Ended on a small cliffhanger and definitely left loose ends. Was a bit disappointing that the book ended at 83%. Will read the next that comes out though.

“Magic and Misconduct is the first book in a university-age paranormal academy series, the Sleepy Hollow Academy series. It includes a strong heroine, four men of mystical backgrounds, mystery, romance, passion and suspense with elements of paranormal, sci-fi, and fantasy.”
Now with a blurb like that how could you not want to immediately read this!! It’s well written and fast paced with a varied selection of supernatural beings and a fantastic storyline. Can’t wait to read more!

I liked this book, even with it's downfalls.
I would have liked a little more character development. I felt like I was reading a dating book and that had paranormal themes thrown in there every now and then. It didn't feel like the main plot of the book was a paranormal.

The constant grammar and spelling mistakes was getting to me by the end of the book.
The POV seemed a little messed up to me also. Going from 'I' to 'they' on the next line was a little frustrating.

All in all i did enjoy the book, but I would have liked a little more proofreading and character development.

*WARNING GRAPHIC SEX.

I would have rated this book a 3 but I give it 2.5. I liked the story that there are a variety of magical creatures attending Sleepy Hollow Academy. This is a series it continues and it seems interesting. I just do not like explicit scenes. It could have been simple and clean. Especially, for kids and young teens. I mean it is not really a kids book is it. More like older teens into college...Sheesh. Yet, younger ones can get a hold of it believing it's age appropriate. NOT! Sorry

I don't usually write reviews, but I have to address this piece of writing, unworthy of the title of "book"! If you are intrigued by the attractive cover, or the first half of the fun sounding blurb, do not be deceived!
I agree, I should have read the whole blurb. I would have realized this is a reverse-harem book (I am not terribly fond of those to start with). However, if I start reading book, I always do the respectful thing and finish it. Every author deserves a fair shake, right?!

Well, this book was painful, from start to finish. As I dragged myself through turning page after page, I kept wishing, hoping. . .even silently begging for it to get better. . .if not better, then at least bearable! Alas, it was not to be.

The main character comes from a small town, so even though she was lucky enough to be born a witch, she spends the first 18 years of her life stuck in this dreary little town (that contains little to no other supernaturals). She joins a few online groups, gets a few pen pals, but that's it! I mean, come on. . .any normal teenager lucky enough to be born with magic, but unlucky enough not to have someone to tell them more close by - what do you think they're going to do about it - sit around primly till their 18th birthday, hopefully gets accepted into a magical university, and when they get there, start living it up?!

Suddenly going from knowing nothing about magic (because hey, I've had magic since birth, but I NEVER went in search of someone to teach me (like a cool, well known celebrity witch living with her coven in a penthouse in New York), or something to give me more magical knowledge (like a secret family grimoire, hidden in the ruins of the basement of my great grandmother's creepy mansion on the hill. . .

Suddenly going from being a naive virgin that has never been kissed, to juggling several suitors at once - sometimes in dreams, sometimes in real life. . . sometimes one at a time, sometimes two or more at the same time. An insecure, inexperienced, young, small town girl with absolutely no "romantic experience", is suddenly an expert in "the art of love". . .suddenly has four alpha males from several different walks of life, falling all over themselves to get to be with her (all of them "crazy about her", described in the way a teenage girl describes being in love with her first crush)!

I am fiercely disappointed in the utter crap that gets put out there these days. . .
First readers of this book - how on earth can you give this poor author the idea that this book is even slightly appealing? The actual professionals. . .the literary agent, the editor, the publisher, the marketing team. . .are you guys really this desperate? Is there really so little good writing out there, that you publish this kind of crap?

The only slightly okay thing about this "book" is the graphic artist's work on the front. Then again, if I were you, I would not want my work to be associated with something such as this.

Conflicted on Rating

I wasn't sure whether to give this book 3 stars or 4 stars. I ended up choosing 4 because I really enjoyed the plot.

One constant minor annoyance was the Grammer mistakes. It was obvious to me that the author wrote the book in 3rd person and switched it to 1st person last minute. -1 star

The book ended at 83%. I cannot express to you how much it irks me when authors do this. I expect at least 90% of the book to be THE ACTUAL BOOK. It'd be a little better if I felt like the book was supposed to end where it did but I felt that the book stopped 3/4 of where an actual book should have stopped plot wise. The book was cut short for some reason. Even including like an extra date scene between her and her men would’ve made the ending less abrupt. We didn’t even see her and Vlad’s first kiss. -1 star

Just plot wise, the book is really good I love the ideas and the scenes included, while I feel like there should have been more, I'm invested in this new world. +1 star
---------------------------------------------
One minor annoyance was the world building. Like I said I like this world the author has created but I'm a
nitpicker so of course I thought way to much into the history provided. Basically what bothered me was that all the sudden supernaturals appeared out of nowhere 68 years ago. And there has been a war in the past 68 years since they came out??? Like what? Assuming that every supernatural started off as a baby and grew into maturity, that's at least 20 years before anyone of them can even begin to think about war. That's 48 years left and honestly, you think any semblance of peace can be created in 40+ years? Like these people are living in the same town as supernaturals regardless of the few rogue human/hunters, that still takes years to build up that sort of trust. Their are people still alive that remember life before supernaturals, that's how short this timeframe is. Maybe if the author had said 150 years it'd be a bit more realistic.

Stopping after the first book

The book stopped around 84%. One minute you’re just reading it and then it’s over. It just leaves you really unsatisfied. I’m not against cliffhangers but it should make you want to buy the next book right after finishing it.

Another thing I didn’t like about this book is that a lot of the good moments are glossed over. She meets a guy, so far so good, they like each other, it go on one date. We got to read all about it, yay!and then the author writes that they’ve been on a lot of dates and shared some kisses. What were the dates like? What did they do on these dates? Was there a lot of flirting and Laughter? What were the kisses like? Toe tingling? Awkward? We will never know.. weeks pass, two months pass. No idea what happened during this time just that the time has passed and she went on dates. Excuse me? Why are you zipping through? Why can’t we read through it as the characters go through it?

It also talks that the female lead needs to learn more about doing magic. So she has a discussion with another student about magic for three hours. It was made very clear that she grew up in the human world and never had any contact with other witches. If this is the best college in the country for paranormals, why isn’t she learning how to use her magic more? There was just one statement that she is taking courses for a witch but we don’t hear anything more about these courses. Basically I’m saying there’s bread, luncheon meat, but there’s just no real flavor to the sandwich at all!

I’m sorry if I’m being too harsh but I’ve read a lot of other Academy settings and they go more into detail about the classroom experience and environment. You really get to follow the character from the moment they wake up and throughout their day, The next day and the day after that etc. The author talks about one day and then skips over the next few days comes back and talks about that day and skips over the next month. There’s no real consistent flow to the story.

Nope nope

I don’t understand the dynamics of the story in term of a reverse harem. Quite the oppossite actually, Marina as the main character is weak and naive. Naive i can understand but this is a woman who can’t defend herself but have these men who do so. They don’t fall in love they just “like” each other and date. One guy is jealous but heng up for another girl, two guys a vampire and a dragon who are very good friends and decide to share her. one appeared last
Who is from another university and save her too. It’s like she meets a guy and they like each other, just like that and she just adds up another one to date. For me that’s not a reverse harem. It’s about a woman who’s a bit slutty. I said a bit because at least she’s not had sex with any of them at the moment but she definitely wants to. I didn’t get the sense of romance at all, actually, the story is cold and hollow in terms of personal relationships among these guys and her.

This is a nice change of book from Zara Zenia I’m used to all of her alien stories I don’t know what I expected so when I read this story I was amazed and happy with it and I can’t wait to read book 2 of this series. Marina is the only one in her family that is a witch the rest are human so she was sent to Sleepy Hollow Academy to learn how to use her powers. Now Marina is thrown into a world she didn’t even know about it doesn’t help that she has 4 guys vying for her attention. When one of her guys is accused of killing a Unicorn shifter he couldn’t of done it because the knife would of burned his hands so now they need to find out if there’s a hunter in their midst before another supernatural is killed. Fantastic story but it does end in a cliffhanger but I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

Well written first installment to the series, full of hot guys, sizzling chemistry...and murder

This is a great series opener, full of steamy chemistry, creepy guys, danger and some serious danger in the form of hunters. Sleepy Hollow University seemed like a super safe place, but appearances are apparently deceiving. Our h, Marina, who's been happily dating several super hot guys, is thrown off kilter with her first exposure to the hunters looking to exterminate all supernatural peoples and then has to quickly regroup when a fellow student is murdered - and she almost sees it happen! Whew! Talk about a crazy fast plot and a fun peak into college life with a paranormal twist. I can't wait to see what comes next!

I Really Really wanted to love this book for obvious reasons. My name is rarely every a character name let alone an MC. The book was average I suppose which was a disappointment, there was a lot of potential and still is for further books. The Great Awakening that created supernaturals was skated over and barely mentioned which is a shame because it’s a Huge detail for the story. Marina barely interacts with students other than her roommate and her boy toys even then the interactions are a brief or skated over.. The whole book is just her settling into the academy with other supernaturals for the first time in her life and acquiring guys nothing really happens until the end and that’s fairly brief then the book ends. 🤷🏼‍♀️ There was 2 mistakes I found where the wrong word was put, Vlad never introduced himself to Marina and the roommate but yet the dialogue continued as if he had, and Marina’s eye color changed from brown to blue.

3.5 rounded up

This is labeled a bully romance, so I was a bit hesitant - but it’s not, at all. I’m not sure why it’s tagged or even titled that way to start with, as most bully romances revolve around some type of actual bullying, either by the main male character or from other around the FMC. This doesn't include that. Instead (and thankfully) there is one character that outshines the others in her general dislike of the Marina, though we aren't sure why - and the worse thing she does is yell at her. That's about it. So, ignore the bully tag - it doesn't apply here. Maybe in Book 2?

This is all about college age students, attending a paranormal school ripe with discord the humans who don’t want them there. But that’s about it. All in all, it’s a very slow paced book that feels more like introductions than an adventure. Very little really happens, though there are a few pivotal moments. Also, it ends at 83%, so there’s that.

Marina thought that leaving behind her small town to go to college would open the world for her. But, being a Witch in a world where the Supernatural was loathed had its dangers too and what she thought was safety was not. But the university had its perks and they were keeping her very busy. An unexpected situation for the small- town girl but very welcome. Interesting and entertaining this first book where we have the POV of the protagonist and the boys. Caught my attention the suspense and the mystery in the plot development. Intrigued with the different characters that were so different.

I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
It was a great book !
Marina is a the odd duck out in her family.
She is a witch, but the rest of her family is totally only human.
The solution was Marina going to Sleep Hollow University to learn to control her powers.
It looked like the perfect solution on paper, but it is not always black or white.
Now Marina has a new world to learn to navigate.
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can't wait for the next book in this series.

As a young, sensual witch, she has a lot to learn of course but she also has a lot going on at the academy. This is just a taste and does a good job on setting the pace and foundation of the characters and the plot. Can't wait to read the next part of her story and learn along with her all about the many different types of magic. There's also a mystery afoot which adds more intensity to the plot, nothing slow about this sleepy hollow. Great cover. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author.

I have to say I was intrigued when I found out this author stepped into the Academy trope. I love her books and lets just say this book fit in with the rest of her books as far as the writing goes. The storyline and characters are great and I so badly wanted to be standing behind Marina several times so I could just see the guys faces when certain things happen. I can not wait to find out what happens in the next book.

Sleepy Hollow University is one of the best in the country for supernatural students. Marina was thrilled to be accepted as a witch from a small town with very little experience and no training. On campus she finds a best friend in her shifter roommate and begins dating three men. Unfortunately, there are those who hate supernaturals and will try to hurt or even kill them and Marina must learn to be cautious. I liked the characters and the slow build of the relationships and the magical community. I received an advance copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.

I gave this one the good old college try but I could finish. I admitted defeat at chapter 13 and I feel no shame doing so. As someone who leans towards the fantasy genre, this book is a trap! Magic is incidental to the storyline. The book opens with the protagonist, explaining her magic, and her excitement about going to a magic university. Thirteen chapters in, no magic, no diving down into her powers, into the classes etc. I found this to be a mediocre reverse romance that was dressed up with the promise of fantasy and insta-like between the main characters. I would skip this one.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. This the first book in a series and it is about a girl who learns she is witch while the rest of her family are human. She gets picked to go to Sleep Hollow University to get her powers under control. She is met with some harshness on her journey but there are also four guys that want her attention. Even with all the craziness and one of them being accused of murder Marinna had to do something about this. I like this as a start of a series. I will have to continue to see how the rest of the story goes.

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title

Yes, a new school, for a young woman from a small town, who has finally gotten her dream: to attend a college that was shifter oriented.
Not only were the new classes different and daunting, but the attraction between her and a number of young men, well, that was something this young lady had never experienced.
However, there is something sinister lurking around campus, that is putting them all at risk.
It is a cliffhanger, so be prepared to be left wondering, until you read the next in the series.

She is a witch but the rest of her family is human. So to help her learn control of those powers she is sent to the school with others like her. Marina has never met many supernaturals, and is excited to be accepted into the Sleep Hollow University. She really wants to concentrate on her studies, but the guys can be quite a distraction. When someone is murdered, and one of her friends is suspected, she finds out that not all supernaturals are what they seem - and that there are things she really does need to be afraid of!

Welcome to Sleepy Hollow Academy!

Marina is heading to university to learn how to control her powers. There, she attracts the attention of four male students - fae, vampire, shifter, and warlock. To further keep her on her toes, one of her suitors is accused of murder.

There were very interesting and different characters in this book. I will enjoy reading the rest of the series as it is released.

Wonderfully written. Marina was a witch who was excited about getting into her first choice college. This is where she would meet others like her and more. Vlad, Daniel, Colin and Thomas all fell for her and the fun began. But when a tragedy struck close to home she was left to wonder whose next. The characters were so great as the story line. Can't wait to read the next one.

This is a great start to this academy RH romance. It as great characters that are unique in both personalities and abilities. This is a creative story with great potential for the rest of the series. However, there is one part of the blurb that doesn't happen until the very last pages, which is a little misleading. Overall, great read!
