Paige Sleuth is a pseudonym for mystery author Marla Bradeen. She plots murder during the day and fights for mattress space with her two rescue cats at night. When not attending to her cats' demands, she writes.
Kat has recently returned to her home town of Cherry Hills, WA but has entered into more than she bargained for. Her neighbor, Mrs. Tisdale, is found murdered in her apartment by Kat when she was returning Mrs. Tisdale’s cat, Matilda.
Join Kat as she ventures into her own investigation, even while her childhood friend Andrew is the local police detective. A classic who-done-it mystery is afoot!
While I did enjoy the story, albeit short and quite easy to figure out, the writing is mostly decent and I do recommend it to any mystery fan, though it might be easy for you to figure out as well.
Book 2: Framed in Cherry Hills
Although Kat is excited to start a new job with the Furry Friends Foster Family, it’s starting off with a problem: Willow Wu is framed for drug possession.
Imogen is adamant that Willow is innocent and is quite insistent that Kat help her out of this situation. Obviously not wanting to let people down, even with her own muddled past with drugs, Kat refuses to let this go without finding the culprit who’s responsible for the frame job.
Overall, the story is good, quick and simple to figure out. I do recommend this, but if you want more of a challenge for your super sleuth skills, maybe skip this series.
Book 3: Poisoned in Cherry Hills
On the night of the 4F’s - Furry Friends Foster Family - dinner event, a young woman named Heidi is poisoned. Hoping for a quiet evening, Kat and others were disappointed and forced to sit around as police did their investigating.
As usual, Kat is thrown into the case by discovering an empty vial in the women’s restroom, hunting down suspects and getting herself in some serious trouble.
Overall, the story is good and I did enjoy the characters, the plots and the first three books in the series. My only caveat is that the mysteries are incredibly easy to figure out from the beginning. If you enjoy animals, mystery and a budding romance, the Cozy Cat Capers could be an entertaining read.
Thoughts: These are three short, quick reads connected through the main character, Kat. I think the think I loved most about these stories is that they take place near Wenatchee, WA, a place I’ve visited in the past. In each story, there is a mystery to be solved – who killed Mrs. Tinsdale (#1), who framed Willow Wu (#2), and who killed Heidi Smith (#3). The characters all are connected and the stories build from the first to the last. You need to read them in order so you can understand what’s going on and what the connections are. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of depth to these stories (yes, I know, short) and there are, for me, a lot more questions left unanswered, especially about Kat. But each mystery does get solved in the end.
Recommendation: If you’re looking for a quick lunchtime read, these would be a good distraction. If you’re looking for depth and a meaty story – not here. But they are cute.
Disclaimer: I received a final and/or advanced reader copy of this book with the hope that I will leave my unbiased opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that… My Opinions. I am posting this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”
These are short stories and as such are limited in depth and character development. The stories were ok, though I’m a bit tired of these untrained ‘super sleuths’ getting upset when the police tell them to leave the investigation to the police.
Murder in Cherry Hills-3 stars: I have to say Kat’s irrational fear of a simple preventative measure for the cat seems over the top. And although it seems jumping to conclusions as to who the murderer is is a cozy staple, Kat brings it to a new high.
Framed in Cherry Hills--3 stars: And here’s Kat again, jumping to conclusions with nothing but a “they were angry or they could have.”
Poisoned in Cherry Hills--3 stars: Enough suspects to keep Kat jumping from one to the other, never suspecting the real culprit (of course, I didn’t either). And not really figuring it out either, but still having her life endangered when the murderer confronts her.
Even thought these three books are short enough to be considered novellas, taken together they gave me a delightful peek at the life of Katherine (Kat) Harper returning to her home town, becoming a volunteer at an animal rescue organization, adopting two cats and getting involved romantically with Detective Andrew Milhone, an old school friend (both raised in foster care) and finally a kiss in the 3rd book). Kat has been back in town a very few weeks, and already there have been 3 "suspicious deaths"! So it is rather obvious she gets involved in solving the murders. Charming characters, good plot lines, and lovely dogs and cats. Given my experience with this boxed set, I think I'll read the next three in a boxed set as well (there is a teaser from book #4 that Kat wants to find her mother).
Too shallow, no depth. Animals nice touch but they are not really part of the story. Three books in and too many questions. Why did she come back to town, why isn’t she looking for a good paying job in her field, why does she only have questions about mom what about dad, why In the last story did she not ask the obvious questions about the vial, why didn’t the police, what happened to the kid who framed the teacher, why did no one suspect her when she found the vial and touched it, why did she and her best friend not keep in touch when it meant so much and they only had each other, why didn’t she want to find out about her mom when help was offered and more
PAIGE S L E UT H PENS THE THE COZY CAT CAPER MYSTERY BOX SET. THERE ARE THREE BOOKS IN THE SET MURDER CHERRY HILLS, FRAMED CHERRY HILLS, AND POISONED CHERRY HILLS. IN THE BOOK, THE CATS MIMIC THE HUMANS BY ADMITTING NO ONE IS GOING ANYWHERE UNTIL SOMEONE TAKES A BREAK OR A NAP, EVEN. WHEN IT IS ASSUMED BY THE TOWN, HEIDI HAS BEEN MURDERED NO ONE STOPS DRIVING AROUND. IF IT TAKES SLEEP AND CARS TO OWN UP TO THE CATS, YOU WOULD BE IN A BUMPY RIDE FOR WHATEVER HAPPENS NEXT! IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO COZY UP TO THIS MURDERESS CAPER OF A MURDER MYSTERY.
I’m grateful these came as a 3 book set because once I finished the first book I couldn’t wait to read the second, and finally the third.
I enjoyed seeing how Kat developed friendships with the members of the 4F rescue society and rekindled a friendship with her childhood friend Andrew, now turned detective of the Cherry Hills police department. Throughout each book you learn a bit more about Kat’s past, but there’s still some unsolved information about her birth mom. I recommend getting this box set because you won’t want to stop reading after the first book. I’m ready to read the next box set in this series!
These stories are light hearted. Two individuals are reunited after years of separation. Both were a product of the foster child system. They were close friends during that time, but as luck would have it, drifted apart. Now they’ve reunited, Not quite sure if they can still be at least friends. The young man is a police detective. The young woman waits tables at a popular local restaurant. Situations occur involving murder. Eventually mutual attraction and murder works to bring both together.
I enjoyed these stories. I liked the main character Kat Harper. Kat grew up in foster care in Cherry Hills Washington. She has just moved back to Cherry Hills and settled into a new apartment when she finds her neighbor dead. Kat kindly takes in Mrs. Tinsdale's cat but can she solve her murder? This is the first book in this box set. I use the term book loosely. The stories are short more like novellas than a full length book. The stories are interesting and the characters likeable. I would like to know what happens in book 4.
This is an interesting series of stories involving a young woman who returns back to her hometown and finds a neighbor dead in the first story. The second story involves a woman framed for murder and the third story is the death of a woman but another person was the intended victim. You will meet Katie Harper, the detective Andrew Milhone and a series of other people who are all involved with 4F , a rescue for animals and finding them new homes. Romance, amateur sleuthing and but very well written and solved mysteries!
This is a very quick light read. It has some obvious suspects that are easily captured. Not much suspense but a fun read. I didn’t care for the part where the police officer drinks a beer before driving but it’s difficult to find a decent book without foul language or sexuality so I didn’t let it bother me too much. This was a fast paced easy story. I might check out more from this author. Not Christian but much cleaner than most.
Cute story concept. However, 3 books into the series and 3 crimes within maybe 4 weeks of each other?! I definitely wouldn't want to live in Cherry Hills, no matter how friendly & pretty the town seems! I was disappointed that the cats are relatively more filler & fluff background than a more integral part of each book's story.
These were fairly short stories, but not bad. I felt there should have been a bit more character development and the mysteries were solved to easily. I loved the animal parts though. The romance part could have waited for a bit though.
The stories are entertaining. I read them over the course of a couple weeks, just before going asleep. The stories are interesting without making my brain restless. I'd read more by this author.
After returning to the small town where she grew up in foster care, Kat finds herself solving crimes and volunteering as a board member for a local animal foster program.
Small town charm. 3 different mysteries. Can’t wait to read about Kat’s next adventure. I would like a little more information about her prior life before coming back to Cherry Hills.
Overall, I enjoyed these 3 stories and found the plots to be ok, but very short. The cats and other animals in the stories just made for extra interest. The characters are reasonably good, but with the length of the tales, not much room for developing them more.
This was slot of fun to read. The characters were likeable and I love the animals theme. The only missing was if the main character was ever reunited with her mother.
Well developed characters and good stories. The only reason it's not5 stars is because of the inability, using foreshadowing to let the reader solve a mystery.
