Richard spies for the Crown under the guise of a rogue but is intent on revenge. Offering for the beautiful Caroline creates an unwelcome distraction. Yet the desire he finds with her makes him wonder if a life—and love—after he claims justice is possible.

Caroline quickly sees there is more to Richard than she expected, and his kindness toward her ailing father melts her heart. But marrying him won’t save her family despite the surprising passion she discovers in his arms.

A regency romance with a spy twist. Good chemistry between the leads. I liked Caroline, the feisty heroine who sprung into action and helped when the hero was in danger.

It is no secret that Lana Williams is one of my favorite authors. I loved her Medieval series, the Victorian/Paranormal Secrets trilogy and most recently her Victorian Seven Curses series and now she has taken the plunge into the Regency era!
Regency era romance is one of my favorite subgenres in the world of Historical Romance and while I am not overly picky, most authors stubble when they delve into this era – so as much as I love Lana’s work, I was leery. I am happy to say with the exception of a couple minor things and one title flub – she nailed it!

This is the story of Richard Walker, the Earl of Aberland and Caroline Gold, eldest daughter of Sir Reginald Gold. Caroline’s father made his fortune in shipping and he was awarded a Knighthood twenty years ago for his service to the crown. Sadly, her father has recently begun to show signs of dementia and combined with some bad investments, the family is on the brink of ruin. She feels guilty that unlike her sisters, she has no talents that would enable her to contribute to the family’s coffers. So in an effort to save her family, Caroline has been trying to encourage the Duke of Wakefield to propose. With his wealth and connections, Caroline is sure that he is the answer to her all her problems.

After sharing a dance with the duke, she is sure he will propose, but when their conversation is interrupted and he walks away, Caroline makes an impulsive decision to follow him.
Richard is on a mission, he is an agent for the crown and lost his partner and best friend just over a year ago – betrayed by a woman whom he trusted. He is determined to find the traitor that killed his friend and his former lover. He has narrowed his suspects down to 3 members of the ton and has returned to England to deliver justice. The ton know him as a penniless rogue, which works for his purposes. He sees Caroline follow Wakefield out to the gardens and as Wakefield is one of his targets, he follows them. When Wakefield abruptly leaves, Richard confronts Caroline about her conversation – at this point he is not sure if she is innocent or if she is in cahoots with Wakefield. Unfortunately, when she tries to leave, he grabs for her arm and they end up in a compromising position, which is witnessed by not only her mother, but the hostess.
Caroline is horrified and tries to explain her way out of the inevitable – Richard must propose to save her reputation – but marrying him will ruin her family. She is also concerned with him finding out about her father’s condition. They reluctantly agree to a betrothal – but neither actually plans to marry the other.
As Caroline and Richard get to know each other, they both wonder if perhaps there could be something more between them. But the each have secrets and a villain is determined to destroy them both.
The book is well written, flows nicely, the secondary characters are wonderful, it has secrets, some action, a bit of intrigue and a dash of angst. While this book is not a steamy read, there are a few passionate kisses and stolen moments.

I would be happy to recommend this book because I really enjoyed the story and sincerely hope that Ms. Williams has plans to write stories for Caroline’s sister and Richard’s brother!

This is a quick, easy read without much to it. The best aspect of the book is the relationship between the heroine and her father, who is dealing with the loss of his mental faculties. Their interactions are touching and realistic, and the heroine's best qualities come out when she is trying to help her family. Other than that, we have the basic stock characters. The hero is a spy with a troubled past who poses as a dissolute rake so Society doesn't know what he's up to (although you never really see him do "rakish" things that would make this convincing). There are a few fun situations early on, with the H/h skulking around together, but the plot ends up too pat and there is really no mystery.

The main villain is just who you suspect. Why he felt the need to get the heroine involved around the halfway point, unnecessarily putting her in danger and making her suspicious of his motives, is never explained. This is where I gave up suspending disbelief. How desperate is this guy? Surely he has connections and could have hired someone. And the scene where the heroine fights off a bad guy during the exchange is silly, almost played for laughs, until the hero jumps in.

The heroine comes across as much too naive here. She is supposed to be intelligent, so she should have educated guesses regarding why she would have been attacked by a man with a knife when she wouldn't give him a book during a planned, secretive exchange. Society was aware of the existence of spies during this time period. She just never seems to put any of the pieces together, insisting on peeking at the book and whining to the hero that he's not giving her answers (seriously, though, he could have told her he was working for the Crown without giving away too much). Another example of silliness: agreeing to meet with the villain--not telling the hero but taking her sister along--just to let him know the exchange didn't go through. (But why the villain didn't already know this calls into question whether he's even a semi-competent spy.)

It seems like the hero spends too much of the time bailing the heroine out.

For me the plot really stumbles toward the end, when the villain suddenly manipulates the hero.
QUESTIONS THAT MIGHT BE SPOILERS: Why does the villain want to break off H/h's relationship so much? Just out of spite? If it's because he intends to marry the heroine, why? He's sucking her family dry financially and doesn't need her cooperation to continue to do so. Her father isn't getting better, and the business is headed toward takeover. Plus, the hero seems to give in so quickly. If the villain had some dirt against him, that would have made more sense. Instead, we get the two scenes in romance novels that make me cringe: the hero's "I'm going to fake end our relationship and be nasty about it" followed in the end by the heroine's "I totally understood why you did that and I love you anyway." Just part of what I call the "silly angst" formula.

The epilogue is quick and a bit of a letdown.

I thought I'd give this author a try because I love the Regency Romance Mystery genre. The editing and writing style are OK (although there are a some redundant words and phrases). The pieces are here, but they don't quite fit to complete satisfaction.

Note: the language and love scenes are tame, if that's a consideration for you. No sex, just a bit of steam.

Secrets

Richard and Caroline are both deeply involved on secrets. Richard is a British spy, who, though a lord, dresses in rough clothing, spending a lot of time in France, passing himself off as a commoner. No-one can know what he does!

Caroline is wrapped up in this something far different. She must find a husband to save her family. Her father's health, and grip on realty as his mind continues to deteriorate, are causing a desperate decline in their family's ability to keep the a roof over their heads.

As their interest in one another grows, they begin to sense the hidden underlying challenges. Fascinating story with wonderful characters and dark forces! I highly recommend this book!

Catherine Gold’s family is in dire financial straits. As the eldest of three girls, she worries about their situation and keeping her father’s health a secret. Her solution: marry a wealthy member of the ton. She hopes for a proposal from the Duke of Wayfair. Richard Walker, Earl of Aberland, is known for being poor and a rogue, so he is certainly not the kind of husband Catherine needs, but he is not what he appears to be. He is actually a spy for the Crown and very wealthy. Richard is after Le Sournois, an Englishman of the ton supporting Bonaparte, who killed his friend and partner, Dumond. He has narrowed his list of suspects down to three men, which includes the Duke of Wayfair. Because of a misunderstanding, Richard and Catherine are forced into a betrothal, even though neither one expects that it will end with them getting married. Catherine is a distraction Richard can’t afford, but his attraction to her grows and he feels he has to protect her. Without meaning to, Catherine becomes involved in Richard’s activities and it puts her in danger. You will find intrigue, suspense, humor, wonderful characters, and, of course, love. Of all the characters in this story, my favorites are Catherine, her sisters, Richard, and Richard’s brother Daniel. This is a great story and I want to read more in this series. I received an advanced reader copy of this book.

I am a huge fan of all of Lana Williams's books and I loved this one too! Caroline is the eldest in a family of 3 daughters and determined to do her part to save the family from financial ruin by marrying a wealthy duke who's shown interest in her. But her plans go awry when she finds herself engaged to the wrong man! As she learns more about the penniless rake she finds herself engaged to, she begins to wonder if he's the right one after all. Richard is set on revenge but first he needs to determine which French spy murdered his best friend. Becoming engaged is not part of his plan. Speaking of engaged- that's what this book is! An engaging story with well developed characters and a great plot that will keep you turning pages. The romance is filled with longing and you'll find yourself cheering on both of the characters as they search for their happily ever after. I highly recommend this one!

To Love A Rogue

Excellent book to read written by Lana Williams! Richard, Lord Aberland, was a spy working for the crown. A year ago his best friend and he were working together on a case. Drummond was killed with a knife and Richard was shot. Richard has it narrowed down to 2 men, one is the Duke of Wayfair.
Then you meet Caroline and her family who play a big part in the story. Caroline becomes engaged with Richard for a temporary time . I don't want to tell the story because so much more happens.
Get the book and enjoy the story!

Romancing the Rogue, Book 0.5 of The Rogue Chronicles series (as well as Book 5.5 of The Seven Curses of London series, and Book 9 of the Regency Rendezvous series), was about Caroline Gold, the eldest of three daughters of Sir Reginald Gold, and Lord Richard Walker, the Earl of Aberland.
With her father's failing health and growing lack of funds, Caroline knew she would need to wed someone who would be willing to help her family financially...and soon. With her mother's eyes set on a duke, who seemed to be just as interested in Caroline as her mother was in him, they thought their troubles would soon be over. Unfortunately, caught in what appeared to be a compromising situation with Richard, Caroline found herself betrothed to a man who, for all appearances, was no better off financially than she.
Richard, although Society believed him to be without money, was, in fact, quite well off. He only used the appearance of a down on his luck rakehell to hide the truth...that he was, in fact, very wealthy...and a spy for the Crown.
There was a lot of angst, drama, and intrigue in this story, along with a touch of humor. While the romance was apparent, it was decidedly less apparent than the mystery Richard was trying to solve. Caroline inadvertently kept getting caught up in the intrigue and Richard, trying desperately not to fall in love, found himself focusing more on her safety than the answers to the crimes.
The characters were well developed. Richard was a bit of a hard sell though. At times he was strong-willed and defensive, while at other times he was almost wimpish. Caroline definitely had a strength that most Heroines of the time period lacked, but it was an attribute that served her well as the eldest daughter who was trying to save her family from utter ruin.
The storyline was a bit cheesy though. A lord who was also a spy that believed he couldn't have his cake and eat it too was somewhat unbelievable, especially as he was wishy-washy when it came to his relationship with Caroline. It might have been more convincing if the author had included one of his superiors as a character he interacted with to help alleviate his doubts about what he was doing rather than leave him to stand alone trying to work things out. All in all, it wasn't a bad book. Just not five-star worthy.

This was an enjoyable read with good characters and an interesting storyline. Caroline is a strong, intelligent woman which I loved for this time period. She is desperate to hep her family and protect her father. Richard was the likable rogue with a secret life. He is determined to avenge his best friends death and will stop at nothing to make that happen. He never expected to fall for Caroline in the process.

These two find love when neither expected it. They both start out having secret agendas, but learn to trust each other and end up helping each other. I loved them together and the overall storyline was seamless and enjoyable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've been a fan of Lana Williams for all of her series and this Regency romance was another clever, emotional love story. Caroline was a great heroine - a mix of courage and vulnerability I was cheering for and Richard was a perfect hero. I loved the way they got together and how each of them had to overcome so much to be together. Great dialogue and chemistry between the two of them. Really recommend to readers who love the Regency era.

Nice read

A lord and a lady caught in a compromising position that leads to a betrothal. How did that happen? He is hiding a big secret about who he truly is and what he does and she was hoping for a wealthy match, so help save her family from debt. As they navigate their betrothal and learn about each other they each find being together may not be a bad. Idea. After complications are cleared away they find their happy ever after

Wonderful, clean romance with a little suspense

Richard being a spy had great moments working for the Crown and keeping his disguise in place. Caroline was sweet & smart. The climactic scene for the traitor wasn't quite as long as I'd expected. Maybe I just expected more suspense. Overall the characters were believable, but I didn't feel much emotion for any of them. I did enjoy the story though.

This first book is my favorite of the four. I like both the hero and unlikely heroine whom he marries.
It has a lively adventurous plot that get me interested. It also introduces the other two Rose brothers who mostly run the extravagant Rose Room, an elite gambling place for the ton, but no ladies allowed. Driscoll and Dante are the two younger brothers who run the day-to-day dealings. Their books are also extremely good.

If Caroline Gold can marry a wealthy man with a title, she can secure a better chance for her sisters and resolve her family's financial difficulties. However, her life and plans are thrown into chaos when a scoundrel with a roguish reputation embraces her in a very public display of passion. Read this story with Caroline and Richard's slow burn romance entwined with dangerous traitors and spies hidden in the wealthy dignitaries of their English society. Good Read!!!!

Romancing The Rogue is an entertaining historical romance by Lana Williams. Ms. Williams has given us a lovable cast in this tale. Caroline needs to marry well to save her family from ruin. Richard is a spy for the Crown. Caroline and Richard's story is loaded with drama, humor, spice and suspense. I enjoyed reading this book. Romancing The Rogue is book 1 of The Rogue Chronicles but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.

Enjoyable

Lots of intrigue as the Earl tried to find the man who shot him and killed his friend. It had to be a traitor, selling England's secrets to the French. Along the way he is found with a female in the garden, as he attempts to question her re the suspect. Nice epilogue.

Love and longing

Richard's need for revenge and justice almost got in the way of his chance for love. Caroline had her own challenges very similar to what families struggle with today when a family member begins to show signs of dementia.
