A prequel to The Stone Prince and The Painter Knight, The Granite Shield is an equally rich action- and conflict-packed novel, replete with battles, politics, religious and Court intrigues, and focusing around a family gifted with the magic of the Flame, a power which can give its wielder the world or consume him.
I really am having a great time in Branion and will be sad to finally finish my visits there. I was very impressed with this book, the characters were very well developed and likable. The war between the two religions and the family conflicts are well done and interesting. I think that this was one of my favorites of the series so far.
The third in the series, and story-wise, this one takes place waaaaay before the other two books. All-in-all I felt sorry for one of the main characters. However it didn't tickle my fancy as much as the other two books did.
