Was ist nur mit Phillip P. Peterson los?

Warum hat dieses Buch bei Amazon überwiegend (bis gestern ausschließlich) 5 Sterne Bewertungen?

Und warum bin ich so ein Idiot und lese das allen Ernstes auch noch zu Ende?

Das sind die Fragen die sich mir nun stellen.

Dieses Buch hatte leider viel von Petersons Schwächen. Namentlich, flache Dialoge und unterdurchschnittliche Charakterzeichnung.

Und praktisch nichts von seinen Stärken. Kurzweilige Action, ein ordentlicher Spannungsbogen, clevere Ideen und wissenschaftliche Details. Nein, davon war hier nichts zu sehen.

Die Handlung war eintönig, die Hauptfigur weinerlich und unqualifiziert, der Bösewicht wenig kreativ und blass, die Nebenfiguren unterentwickelt, die diversen Twists am Ende wenig beeindruckend bis vorhersehbar und der Showdown einfach nur billig.

Nein, das war leider nichts.

Noch dazu ist das Buch ein perfektes Beispiel dafür wie show, don’t tell nicht geht.

Die ganze Zeit hatte ich diesen furchtbaren Gedanken. Wow, ist das amateurhaft!

Nun ist Peterson nunmal ein Indie-Autor. Aber einer der es deutlich besser kann. Allerdings muss ich für Positivbeispiele regelmäßig zu seinen Anfangswerken zurückgehen und wenn ich nicht erst Ende letzten Jahres Paradox nochmal gelesen hätte, würde ich jetzt sicherlich stark an meinen damaligen Bewertungen zweifeln.

Das Buch wird beworben als „für Liebhaber von Alien, Event Horizon und Pandorum“. Der Autor ist selbst großer Fan von Science-Fiction Filmen und hat sicherlich einige Inspiration aus diesen Werken bezogen. Aber die Umsetzung ist so mangelhaft, dass der Leser sich bitte hier nichts Vergleichbares erwarten sollte.

Für mich war das Major Irons auf Klassenfahrt mit seiner unqualifizierten Crew, verlaufen sich in dunklen Gängen und treffen auf E.T.‘s langweiligen kleinen Bruder.

A solid 1 star...

I read in the description that this is for fans of Alien, Event Horizon and Pandorum. So of course, that had me sold and I started to read the book.
It started off well enough with details of the ships and crew followed by a deep mystery of the alien ship and what could happen next.
Then you realize that the weak, cowardly, annoying, pathetic, BORING main character this story revolves around will last until the end. Jeff the foremost mentioned person I have described so delicately is one of the worst characters I have read in a book. He is SO weak and cowardly it's almost unbelievable. Even as the story progresses you would imagine him to harden and rise to the challenge but unfortunately no.

If you are looking for something like Alien, Event Horizon and Pandorum then I suggest looking elsewhere.

There is a lot more to say about this book such as the many spelling mistakes. The time it takes for anything to really happen. How everyone just screams for some reason or how the big mystery is all explained at the end like some kind of Bond villain telling you his entire evil plot for the audience at home but I don't want to give it much more attention.

The 1 star is purely for the baseline idea of the story, like if you went out and had a horrible meal but the location had a nice view.
Everything else can go jump off a cliff.

A good SF / Horror read with a few twists.

There’s so much to like about this book. I didn’t mind that, at first, I was reminded of Alien, because of the finding of an ancient alien ship, and the horrific deaths of the new inhabitants. Nor did I mind that I was also reminded of HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey, with the “ships computer”.
The characters are great, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, quirks and anxieties.
What didn’t gel for me was the evil, psychopathic alien who torments the thousands of human inhabitants with utmost glee through almost Spanish Inquisitorial torture! Unnecessary for me.
Thus my rating is a solid three ⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars for good page-turning read.

Nein, ich bin nicht enttäuscht.
Aber nur, weil mich die letzten Peterson Bücher leider nicht so vom Hocker gerissen haben. Ich habe meine Ansprüche etwas heruntergefahren.

Von Das schwarze Schiff, kann man sich gut unterhalten lassen. Es hat zwar eine ganze Menge Plattitüden, aber auch ein paar richtig gute Ideen. Leider kommen die nicht so gut zur Geltung, weil ich mich über handwerkliche Fehler ärgere über die ich mich bei einem Indie Autoren aber nicht auslassen will, weil ich will das er weiterschreibt!
Die Geschichte leiht sich genau an den Filmen etwas, mit denen auch geworben wurde (und ich mache mich jetzt unbeliebt in dem ich sage, dass ich Event Horizon nicht mag - Mini-Film-Kritik: der Film macht viel richtig, besonders der Anfang ist Hammer und gleitet dann ins gorige ab - ich finde das letzte Viertel widerlich und unguckbar.) So schlimm fand ich das Buch hier nicht. Imho genau das richtige Maß, finde ich. 3 Sterne also weil ich zufrieden war, aber nicht gerockt.

Dieses Buch hat mich sehr enttäuscht und wird den Fähigkeit des Autors nicht gerecht. Ständig wiederkehrende Formulierungen ("ein gutes Dutzend"), schwacher Einsatz von "show, not tell", langweilige Figuren und eine aufgewärmte Lokalitätsidee aus Paradox 2 sind schlicht und einfach zu wenig. Der an Alien erinnernde Showdown von wenigen Seiten, die uninspirierte Hölle ohne neue oder zumindest eigene Ideen und das Fehlende Drumherum zu dem tobenden Krieg haben mich etwas unzufrieden zurückgelassen. Auf mich wirkt die Geschichte wie ein Schnellschuss der sich zieht wie die andauernde Latscherei durch öde Korridore im Buch. An manchen Stellen fühlte ich mich als wäre ich im Buch "Chindi" gelandet (das ich im Übrigen sehr gut finde).

For about 2/3 of this book i thought i had finally found the space horror book i have been looking for my whole life or like,, for at least 1 year now but sadly, i was mistaken.
The story took a wild 180° turn that i was not expecting and, while it left me a little disappointed, I enjoyed it greatly.

There were, however, some "mistakes" that made it hard to take the book seriously:
- Chapter 2: "The humidity is sixty percent at a temperature of seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit." Here they had just gone inside the spaceship.
Chapter 17: "It's gotten warmer." "You're right," Castle said. "Seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit. I hadn't noticed. I guess the temperature rises the further down into the ship we go." This is only the second time they mentioned the temperature and its literally the same as before.

- Chapter 2: "I don't know if I even want to explore the ship," Green said. "Why not?" Jeff asked. "This thing is huge. It freaks me out just thinking about what's hidden in the depths of this ship."
The same chapter, only a few pages after: "I don't want anyone to leave the quarters without my express permission." "Why not?" Green asked. "The computer said we could move around freely." Jeff could tell he was dying to explore the ship. ??? make it make sense

- Chapter 2: "How is it that you can speak our language?" "I have collected and analyzed your radio transmissions for many years"
Chapter 3: "[...] The computer has probably been analyzing our transmissions for a long time. I guess that's how it learned our language, too." uhhh, yeah, the computer JUST said that and you were all present to hear it???
Chapter 31: "How did you learn our language?" Even if the computer did the work of translating, it must have its knowledge of the language from somewhere. "The sensors of the ship pick up radio signals by default." To be fair, he was talking to an alien here (even tho the computer was an alien as well but he didnt know it yet) but was anyone honestly expecting a different answer???

- Chapter 5: "As I said, the ship was converted into an unmanned reconnaissance ship after it arrived at its destination. As there was no more crew on board, the manual controls were removed, and it was switched entirely to computer operation."
Chapter 7: "What if the airlock can only be operated by the computer?" "That would be pretty dumb." "If there really are no manual controls in there, it's the logical answer." "Maybe there were once manual controls but they were removed when the ship was reconstructed after the crew left." I cant even deal with how dumb they are
Chapter 21: "Maybe they changed everything to remote control after renovating the ship," Shorty suggested. Jeff shrugged. Another wild guess. HOW IN THE FUCK IS IT A WILD GUESS????????????

- Chapter 9: Now there were only stars dancing in front of Jeff's eyes in the darkness. They kept multiplying, until he noticed he'd been holding his breath for a very long time.
Chapter 11: He felt dizzy and only then did he realize that he had been holding his breath the whole time. Nothing particularly wrong with this, i just think its dumb to "forget u were holding ur breath" not once but twice.

- This whole mess in chapter 19: Joanne switched on her flashlight and set off down the right-hand corridor with Castle and Mac. Castle didn't look happy. He would have preferred to stay with Owl and Shorty, but he appeared to have some energy left, and Jeff saw no reason to leave him behind. He turned to Joanne's group. "Listen up. Explore the corridor, but don't go too far. We'll meet back here in one hour, max."
Joanne nodded. "The cavity can't be more than about five hundred feet from here."
"Yeah, we got that," Castle said testily.
"And see if you can find a room where we could camp for the night."
"Yes, Sir," Joanne replied, and immediately set off down the corridor. Castle shrugged and followed Joanne with a sigh. Mac snorted loudly, spat on the ground, then grudgingly followed the others. ?????

My original rating was 4 stars, but i changed it to 3 after writing all this because im pissed. I almost gave it just 2 stars but i liked the ending and ignoring all that it was a very interesting book.

After the first 70-80 pages, I was ready to put it down and just read something else. I was bored out of my mind, the characters weren't interesting and neither was the story. However, I kept going and it slowly got a tad better. Things seemed exciting although they still didn't actually climax and get to anything too interesting. Then things finally and still slowly actually got interesting and then about just over half way through, it became excellent and I just couldn't put it down. It took me two weeks to read this and the second half of the book took me one day.

The characters had eventually been developed excellently and the picture the story painted was very clear. The writing in the beginning seemed sloppy and uninteresting. There was spelling errors including one very obvious one. There was also an error with a character mix up that will potentially very much so confuse people if they weren't paying attention. The part of the story where this happened wasn't too important though and it was when it was still slow so while the confusion is unavoidable, even if you don't remember the set-up leading to that point, it's not a huge deal.

I really thought I was going to give this 3 stars, maybe 4 at best about half way through the book and that was provided the second half was really good. Well, the second half was so entertaining and so great that I just have to give it 5 stars. I became so lost in the book and felt actual excitement and shock at certain points in the story that I fell it 100% deserves 5 stars. It is a very slow read at first but if you can stick through the very tough beginning, it is well worth it.

Heavily damaged after a successful bombing run, Captain Austin and his crew find themselves stranded a long way from settled space. When an impossibly large, and possibly abandoned, alien vessel seems to prove safe harbor, questions remain: is the ship truly abandoned? And who is killing off the crew?

The Dark Ship (sometimes listed as the Black Ship) is advertised for fans of “Alien, Event Horizon, and Pandorum” (I had to look up and watch that last one because I had never heard of it). As a huge fan of the first two, I was very interested. I would add that it has a flavor of Rendezvous with Rama. Altogether, this was a fantastic space horror book which I would highly recommend. Well written, good tension, earned ‘reveals’, and an interesting antagonist. I plan on reading more by Peterson in the future.

Mir scheint, daß Phillip P. Peterson nach und nach viele SF-Sub-Genres ausprobieren will, wie übrigenz Andreas Eschbach auch. War es mit "Paradox" noch die Hard Science, mit "Transport" noch ein Planetenabenteuer mit Military-SF-Einsprengseln oder mit "Flight 39" eine Zeitreise-Story, so ist es hier eine Mischung aus Space Opera und Horror. Es herrscht eine erbarmungsloser Krieg zwischen Menschenwelten, die gegenseitig Planeten ihrer Gegner zerstören. Ein Schlachtschiff, das gerade mit einer gigantischen Bombe einen Planeten zertrümmert hat, gerät während der Flucht in eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Verteidigern, es gelingt einen Hyperraumsprung, aber das Schiff ist stark beschädigt und landet im Leerraum zwischen den Sternen. Die Besatzung findet ein riesiges Raumschiff (mehr als 1000km Durchmesser), auf das sie zusteuern. Das fremde Schiff antwortet nicht, auf ihre Kontaktversuche, also beschließen sie, sich an Bord zu flüchten, während ihr Raumschiff endgültig explodiert. Die Schleußen öffnen sich für die Schiffbrüchigen, nachdem sie drinnen waren, schließen sich die Schleußen wieder, ohne sie wieder öffnen zu können. Im Inneren finden sie eine atembare Atmosphäre mit einer Luxus-Hotel-mäßigen Ausstattung vor und ein sog. Bordcomputer begrüßt sie in ihrer eigenen Sprache (kosmokratisch !!!). Der Computer verspricht ihnen, sie zu ihrem nächsten Stützpunkt zu fliegen und sie dort abzuliefern. Allerdings kommen sie im folgenden vom Regen in die Traufe und später in die Hölle...
Was Peterson immer wieder gelingt ist die Beschreibung von interessanten Charakteren, so beschreibt er die Handlung aus Sicht des stellvertretenden Kommandanten, der selbst Probleme mit seiner Autorität innerhalb die Gruppe hat, so scheint es, dass die meisten der unteren Dienstgrade ihn hassen, weil er aus einer privilegierten Umgebung stammt, während die meisten anderen Soldaten aus armen Kolonien zwangsverpflichtet wurden. Aber so, wie er die Insubordinationen und die Verstöße gegen die Autorität eines Vorgesetzten schildert, dann weiß man, daß das nicht gutgehen kann. Ich war bis zum Schluss der Meinung, dass das ein guter Roman von Peterson ist, weil man irgendwie wissen will, was dahintersteckt und wie es ausgeht, auch weil ich immer ein Fan von Peterson war, wenn er seine Hard Science Fähigkeiten in die Story einbringt. Leider war die Auflösung der Story dieses Romans, der als Military SF beginnt und sich schließlich zu einer Horror-Story morpht, nicht so mein Ding. Er ist zweifellos gut geschrieben und die Wendungen teilweise nicht vorhersehbar aber der Schluß ist mir etwas zu weit hergeholt, mit einer künstlichen Hölle durch ein böses omnipotentes Wesen...

I was intrigued by this based on the blurb stating that it’s for fans of Alien. I love Alien! Horror and sci fi together? I’m totally here for this. Unfortunately, this book ended up being a big flop for me.

The beginning had me intrigued, I’ll admit. I wanted to keep reading. But very quickly I began to notice more typos that a professionally edited book should have. I even went so far as to google if ‘cavitys’ was an accepted spelling of ‘cavities’ outside of the US, because it’s spelled that way throughout the book and it was very jarring. It seems this book may be a translation to English. I have to say, it is a very poor one.

I also was sad to see that the writing just isn’t all that good. The dialogue is often kind of pointless, with characters just saying really obvious things. There are so many details that are just glossed over - for example, at one point the characters have to crawl through a very narrow ventilation shaft to move from one room to another. They have a large sled full of supplies with them, and I kept wondering how they planned to get all that stuff across, but it’s never explained. It just somehow made it to the other side with them. There are a lot of things like that that made me feel like the author didn’t know how to make it work, so he just didn’t explain it and hoped we wouldn’t notice. There was so much telling in this book, and so little showing.

There are also a lot of really, really convenient solutions to problems in this book. There is no real complexity to any of the challenges the crew faces. Whenever something comes up, there’s somehow often a tool or a button that can magically fix things.

I wasn’t a fan of the characters in this book. Our main character is honestly such a moron, and has some serious self confidence issues that grated on my nerves. The author set him up to have this personal journey to earn the respect of his crew but it never really followed through. The story SAYS the crew started having more respect for him, but it didn’t really deliver on WHY. And while he seems to care for the well-being of his crew in the beginning, by the end, he completely disregards the lives of his remaining crew to save himself.

In addition, the other crew members are not very well fleshed out, and the antagonist is just too simple. He has no motivations for what he does other than he enjoys hurting people, and it made for a very weak reveal.

Altogether, I really can’t recommend this book. It took a really interesting plot concept and then failed to follow through.

Ein neues Buch von Peterson? Da muss ich sofort zuschlagen.
Es gilt also hohe Erwartungen zu erfüllen. Nicht, weil die vorherigen Bücher alle Meilensteine gewesen wären, ja nicht mal, weil alle vorherigen ein gemeinsames hohes Niveau hatten, sondern einfach, weil die Bücher von ihm einfach Spaß machen.

Und Spaß - das gleich vorweg - macht "Das schwarze Schiff" auch. Ganz klar. Und trotzdem hat es nur für 4 Sterne gereicht.
Daran sind für mich zwei Aspekte Schuld:

Viele Wendungen und Auflösungen sind dem Leser schon lange vor den Protagonisten klar, einfach durch die Formulierungen und Andeutungen des Autors. Das lässt die Figuren dümmer erscheinen, als sie eigentlich sind.

Noch problematischer war für mich die Hauptfigur des Jeff Austin. Er benimmt sich in so vielen Situationen so naiv und unbedacht, dass es wirklich schwer fällt, auf seiner Seite zu stehen. Da wäre weniger mehr gewesen.

Ansonsten ist die Geschichte aber wieder schnell und flüssig zu lesen, es gibt immer wieder schöne Ideen und Szenarien. Alles in allem also eine schöne Freizeitlektüre, die einfach gut unterhalten möchte und das in meinen Augen auch tut.

I'm actually a fan of Phillip Peterson, but the quality of editing/translation in this book was very poor. Cavitys??? What's all that about? On one page the captain is called Irons, the next Iron.
For all that, the story was reasonably entertaining but sadly not up to the standard of his previous work.

Quite a ride!

The characters in this book are wonderful. A leader who commands respect and a second in command who gets none. The individual personalities make for a true to life team. But there is the beginning which leads us up to the Dark Ship. What is it? Where is it from? How the hell big is it? One little twist leads to a "What just happened?" to a "what's next?" To a "who that???" to a "What the hell????" Its scifi that at points reads like a murder mystery. The action doesn't stop until the last page. So far, I think it's o e of my face s ifi stories!!!!

A dark novel. Not an easy read.

Dieser Science-Fiction-Roman beginnt sehr actionreich und wird anschließend sehr spannend weitererzählt. Zum Ende hin kommen erste Fragen auf, wie der Autor das Szenario wohl auflösen mag, bis dann das Ende den Leser nur enttäuschen kann. Die Action beginnt mit einer Kampfszene im All, an deren Ende ein Bomber schwer beschädigt durch das All eiert und die Besatzung nach Auswegen suchen muss, um nicht in den Weiten des Alls verloren zu gehen. Die zehn Mann starke Crew stößt zufällig auf ein riesiges schwarzes Raumschiff, das offenbar seit Urzeiten durch das All treibt. Einzig die Bord-KI scheint übrig zu sein, die das Schiff am Leben erhält.

Im Mittelpunkt steht der etwas weinerliche Captain Jeff Austin, der sich derart dämlich anstellt, dass ich mir oft die Frage gestellt habe, wie er es wohl im Militär zu dieser Karriere schaffen konnte. Er ist auf jeden Fall der Aufhänger, um die Gruppe zu spalten, denn nicht all seine Untergebenen sind mit ihm zufrieden und tanzen ihm auf der Nase herum. Es hat ein bisschen was von der Crew der Nostromo aus dem ersten Alienfilm. Ja, auch die Atmosphäre auf dem schwarzen Schiff hat diesen spannenden Touch, wie ihn auch der Film versprühte, nur dass das schwarze Schiff mit einem Durchmesser von mehreren hundert Kilometern unglaubliche Dimensionen hat.

Peterson schafft es, unglaublich viele Ideen in diesen Roman zu packen, die unglaublich gut zur Handlung passen, auch wenn sie vielleicht nur Gedankenspiele sind. Und je tiefer die Mannschaft in das Raumschiff vordringt, um so mehr verdichtet sich die Atmosphäre und ein Grauen manifestiert sich, bei dem der Autor auch vor sehr blutigen Details nicht zurückschreckt. Und dann kommt die erste große Wendung, die das letzte Drittel des Romans einleitet und plötzlich viele Fragen aufwirft. Die werden zwar alle mehr oder minder aufgeklärt, aber sehr unbefriedigend. Nicht nur, dass das Ende etwas unpassend erscheint, die Auflösung kommt dann auch zu schnell und der Autor packt noch ein paar Wendungen hinein, die viel zu Hopplahopp erzählt werden. In meinen Augen zerstörte der Autor damit sehr nachhaltig die spannende Atmosphäre.

Das ungekürzte Hörbuch wurde in einer Art und Weise von Heiko Grauel eingesprochen, an der ich ehrlich gesagt wenig auszusetzen habe.

Fazit
Es ist so schade, dass dieses anfänglich sehr gute Science-Fiction-Roman von dem Ende dermaßen verunstaltet wird. Die komplette düstere und dichte Atmosphäre löst sich in Luft auf. Einfach so. Und macht der Auflösung Platz, die mich nicht überzeugen konnte, zudem das Ende an manchen Stellen viel zu schnell ein paar Fragen in Nebensätzen beantwortet, ohne weiter darauf einzugehen. Sehr schade, dass dieser Roman den Leser so enttäuscht, weshalb ich ihn nur in Maßen für Genrefans empfehlen kann.

Ich lese Sci-Fi-Bücher ab und zu gerne und dachte mir, dass es mal wieder Zeit für ein bisschen Abenteuer auf fremden Planeten und in fremden Welten wäre. Leider konnte mich "Das schwarze Schiff" dann nur so mittelmässig überzeugen. Aber fangen wir von vorne an.

Man begleitet Captain Jeff Austin und seine Crew auf ihrem Schiff durch den interstellaren Raum und es ist Krieg und da fangen die Probleme meines Erachtens auch schon an. Dadurch dass zu Beginn sehr viel beschrieben wird, wer gegen wen kämpft und mit welchen Mitteln, wird man als Leser gleich hineingeworfen und das Vorstellen aller Crewmitglieder (gefühlt 15) macht es auch nicht besser. Für mich war das auf den ersten Seiten too much und erst, als die Crew auf einem riesigen Raumschiff strandet, entwickelte sich bei mir Interesse, wie es denn weitergeht und ob die Crew es schafft, wieder zurück auf ihre Heimatbasis zu gelangen.

Dann wird es ruhiger und man bekommt quasi das Gefühl des Alleinseins und auch der Hilflosigkeit und Isoliertheit mit. Das hat mir dann auch schöne Dead Space- und Alien-Vibes gegeben und ich fand es spannend, wie sich die Crew Gang für Gang durch das gigantische Raumschiff kämpft, auf der Suche nach etwas lebendigem. Den Mittelteil der Geschichte fand ich ganz besonders spannend und es war dann auch genau der Teil, den ich erhofft hatte zu lesen.

Ab dem letzen Drittel wurde es dann aber leider richtig schlimm und da hatte ich so das Gefühl, dass der Autor jetzt noch mal alles geben und die Story so richtig schön abstrus machen möchte. Das ist ihm auf alle Fälle gut gelungen und zwar im negativen Sinne. Die Story geht ab dem letzten Drittel leider richtig den Bach runter und vieles ist dann auch gerade zum Schluss hin so vorhersehbar, dass ich es echt schade fand, dass "das schwarze Schiff" so plump enden musste.

Mein Fazit

Spannend in der Mitte, aber der Anfang und das Ende sind leider nur luftleerer Raum.

Surprised me

It's a disappointing book and I liked this writer's other work. The characters gets are barely, the dialogue is weird (in a bad way), the ship's capacity to provide instantly for a human crew, the casual mention of a hundred million light years journey, the rough sexism (kind of dangerous over months in a small group with questionable discipline) are all offputting.

I had to stop a quarter of the way through. I'm thinking that it can't just be the translation but if it is, I'm out of luck because I don't read German. It might work for some readers (with more patience than I have anymore) but some of his other stuff is much better.

Parts of this were really, really good, and i was completely sucked in and had to stay up late to continue reading. Other parts i found really dull, and they dragged, and i almost wanted to skim over them. I've given it 4 because of the great parts! I loved the first contact concept and the first, hmm, two thirds, but the whole last third was pretty bad. Characters were weak and stereotyped but fine, the main voice was not as bad, and while i enjoyed the initial exploration, i disliked the 'trek' and what they found, (vagueness for spoilerfree!) and ended up not really liking the denouement. Overall i still found the book worth reading, and I'd try others by the author.

Ich fand das Buch leider weder gruselig noch spannend. Als Horror würde ich es kaum bezeichnen und die letzten paar Kapitel waren sogar albern (meine Meinung).

Die letzten paar Szenen sollten wohl Alien imitieren, aber leider waren sie nicht mal annäherend so gut. Auch das offene Ende wirkte auf mich gezwungen - schade.

Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ich noch andere Bücher von dem Autor lesen möchte, auch wenn viele schreiben, andere Bücher von Ihm sind besser. Ich werd wohl sehen, wie viel Zeit ich habe...

The first 8/10th of the book is an enjoyable read. I have a hard time believing the crew constantly making comments etc then the author trying to make it seem as if Irons was a no nonsense leader. Anyone in any military or even business with a true leader knows people do not joke around over and over and over and over.

Once we learn what the cause of everything was/ find other humans, it became unbearable. Terrible ending. I wish I could give it 2.5 but cannot so 3 since more of the book was enjoyable than the awful last 50ish pages.

Ciencia ficción : Comienza con ciencia ficción especulativa y paulatinamente se convierte en fantasía con temática espacial.

Que haga mención de Alien y Event Horizont crea la expectativa de ciencia ficción + terror + asesino extraterrestre + nave espacial vagando por el espacio + mucha sangre + viseras + torturas + alucinaciones + uno que otro suceso sobrenatural : No cubre las expectativas.

Podría recomendarla como : aventura espacial con tientes de ciencia especulativa.

Nunca a fanáticos de Alíen o Event Horizont.

What a weird story. It was entertaining and fascinating to see how this plot developed. I thought it was going to get boring as the crew found their way around a ship with no rooms, but then surprise!! It wasn't boring any more! Some of the plot twists were predictable and others were surprises. Overall it was enjoyable to the sci-fi fan I am!

Interesting concept

Overall, an interesting story and a quick read. It reminded me somewhat of the Rama novels.

The only two knocks I have against this book are, 1. There were a lot more typos than I am used to seeing in most ebooks, so that was kind of annoying. And 2. The Major was very inconsistent. It seemed like his personality kept changing every few pages.

Very good, I read this all in two days. My only complaint is the very very quick ending. I also agree with some of the other reviews that the MC is quite annoying and disappointing. TBH, all of the characters are pretty flat. But I still really liked the unique story and a fresh take on the "ghost ship" theme.

No ending but great story

The end leaves a bit too much to the imagination unfortunately, but then this story is just a snapshot in a much bigger drama anyways so I suppose it is an appropriate ending nonetheless.

Pretty good

Very suspenseful and I was on the edge of my seat for the majority of the book. I like some of the questions posed throughout the story and although I didn't quite like all of the characters I did feel drawn to them.
