The Scottish Highlands, 1899. A life altering event led Catrina Davies to hide from her family and society. Alone in The Highlands she exists in a lonely world cared for only by her savior, a kind old gentleman. When she receives a surprise visitor, Travis Millard, the man she used to love, her head and heart are thrown into turmoil. Travis is determined to save her from this poor life and return her to her family where she belongs. No one is more surprised than he when she agrees to marry him. When Catrina arrives back at her family estate, Davmoor Court in Yorkshire, she is stunned to see the changes. While her father clings to life, Davmoor is nearly ruined by her brother's gambling obsession, and there is something strange about his new wife. As Catrina adjusts to her regained position in society and being with Travis, her marriage comes under attack from Travis's grandmother, who has her own secrets and reason for loathing the Davies family. When one of her brother's adversaries comes to stake his claim on the estate, the resulting chaos threatens not only Catrina's home, but the very lives of those she loves the most. Can she find the strength to fight once more for the right to be happy?
Australian born AnneMarie Brear writes historical novels and modern romances and sometimes the odd short story, too. Her passions, apart from writing, are travelling, reading, researching historical eras and looking for inspiration for her next book. https://www.facebook.com/annemariebrear http://www.annemaribrear.com
Another of Anne Brear's stories which tugs at the heartstrings! Her heroines are always feisty, and Catrina Davies faces adversity with courage. The sense of place is wonderfully wrought in this. That's one of the elements of her books I most enjoy. She brings Yorkshire life in the Victorian era alive.
Fabulous book loved it. Again another one that could do with a part 2. Get so involved with the characters I want to read how they get on in a further book.
Ever since I read “The Slum Angel” I am a fan of AnneMarie Brear. Love her books. “Catrina’s Return” comes close to the 5* of “The Slum Angel”. Yes, Mrs Brear’s books follow a certain pattern (couple that has to overcome trials and tribulations for their happy ending; focus on main female character who is very likeable), so the reader knows what to expect and how the story will play out, but what’s wrong with that? Sometimes one just needs something predictable that leaves a positive feeling behind. Mrs Brear’s novels are like literary comfort food.
“Catrina’s Return” is such a book. It tells the story of Catrina and Travis and their love for each other. There are hurdles to overcome, but the happy end was never in doubt.
Would definitely recommend this book. 4.5*. Can’t give it 5 as full marks reserved for Slum Angel. :-)
Looking forward to reading another of Mrs Brear’s books soon.
Once again AnneMarie has produced a story that will keep you reading for hours, it’s full of love, grief, laughter, threat and even cruelty that will keep you fascinated throughout the story, I read this book in less than 24 hours, just couldn’t put it down!
From the first page I have lived reading this story. AnneMarie has a great way of describing every thing she needs to say. I'm hoping there might be another story of Catrina. Then we can find out what happens to her and her family. A great author. Thank you for your books ❤❤❤
AnneMarie. I absolutely love your books I don't have many left to read. Please though get someone to edit properly, again this book is full of mistakes. Spelling and grammar. No paragraphs either. I loved the story but the end i felt was rushed. It seemed you were desperate to end it.
I have read a lot of AnneMarie Brear books, I have enjoyed everyone. If you like historical reads these are the books for you. Couldn't wait to get to the end of this book, I wanted to know how it closed, and I wasn't disappointed.
This is a great book. The story is absolutely brilliant. It had so many things happening . I find this authors books are excellent and I have read quite a few books now and will be reading more
I found the book stretched unnecessary at times while it was so rushed at the end. I think after 4 books, the author is getting easier to predict. None of the author’s book is holding a candle for me vs Beneath a Stormy Sky.
I really enjoyed this book and I couldn't put it down. The characters are very down to earth and very well chosen. Lots of action and drama but through it all there is a nice
Gripping from the beginning, an amazing story of love, devotion, tragedy and excitement. Frustratingly compelling and completely satisfying. It will not disappoint.
Another nail biting saga, that takes the heroine to extremes of life. Very clever plotting that brings all your emotions to the surface. I recommend it.

Author Anne Brear has long been a favourite of mine and this new release is in keeping with success of her previous novels. If you 19ve never read a novel by Anne Brear, then you are in for an exceptional treat if this is your first, and rest assured, it won 19t be your last. To read a novel by this author evokes memories of reading books by Catherine Cookson or Jane Plaidy. Most of her novels are set in Victorian era England, a time of tumult and great change. And they are always compelling and richly told.
Like all her novels, at the heart of The Day Embroidered, is an exceptionally courageous woman and a family with dark secrets. Catrina comes from a well-to-do family who has fled the security of her family home because of an inaccurate, unjust scandal. Befriended by her benefactor, an elderly, wealthy, childless gentleman, who is like a father to her, she lives in a secluded cottage in The Highlands. When her ex-beau, Travis arrives to see for himself what has become of Catrina and if the rumors are true that she has taken up with a man old enough to be her father, he learns the truth and urges her to return home. With the blessing of her adopted father, she returns home with Travis, only to find her family 19s estate is in dire peril due to her brother 19s gambling debts and mismanagement.
Anne Brear has once again weaved a story where her heroine must face insurmountable problems and unfathomable dilemmas. As in real life, her characters are imperfect, each with his or her own past issues to resolve, making her tale seem very real and probable. Years of research has enabled the author to write with reality and historical accuracy. The author 19s love of England and York come through with every word. Exceptional writing, compelling characters, and a rich tale with plenty of plot twists, kept me reading. I finished this book in two sittings because I simply struggled to put it down.
This book held my attention and I enjoyed the story, though I felt some of it was a bit too convenient. Unfortunately, there were quite a few spelling and grammatical errors which I found rather off-putting. I have read other books by this author and would read more, but I felt this was not one of her best.
