Join Tyrannosaurus rex Baby Dino as he journeys through Dragonfly Pose, Mountain Pose, Downward Dog, and more in this charming picture book featuring a simple, fifteen-pose yoga sequence for kids who love dinosaurs
Newly hatched T-rex Baby Dino wants to explore his world. Taking his cues from the prehistoric landscape around him—a mountain, a pool, a swaying palm, dragonflies, and pterodactyls—he moves through fourteen easy-to-do yoga poses until deciding it’s time for a rest in Relaxation Pose. The spare, rhyming prose will delight young readers and make it easy for them to remember the poses. Parents can join in too, for a healthful family activity. Beautifully illustrated with line drawings and full-color digital collage inspired by the natural world, this delightful book introduces children ages three to seven to the fun, calming effects of yoga.
I got this book as a Goodreads giveaway. Dino Does Yoga is a great book to introduce children to basic yoga poses. A couple of the words would be a little challenging for young readers, but this is a great chance for teaching, and yoga is a great activity to teach children focus and release energy.
Background: I do weekly Yoga Story Times based on picture books. I have avoided books intended to be used that way, because generally they are not very good books, but I grabbed this one because I wanted to do dinosaurs and it had a built in "yoga flow" which meant I didn't have to plan it. But this is a failure both as a yoga book and as a picture book, and I really was unhappy about how the activity went.
Let's start with the text. This actually has a couplet about "even wrong words seem to rhyme." Well, a lot of the rhymes here are labored or don't actually rhyme. That should have been a warning sign to me right there. And the art is unimpressive. I am doing all my stuff on Zoom now, and I try to find books that will show well on camera, but I would never have used this with a live group.
The yoga doesn't meld that smoothly with the text. There are cues on how to do some of the poses, but there are gaps and it doesn't "flow" and this is supposed to be a yoga flow!
I have done yoga story time with books by Eric Carle, Denise Fleming, Lucy Cousins, and lots of other well know picture book authors and they made far better yoga than this supposed yoga book did. If you're trying to add yoga to your story times, go for those, not these well meaning sort of books (And if you want some other author suggestions, I'd be happy to supply them.)
I taught yoga for several years and my kids love learning the postures, so I like the concept of Dino Does Yoga. Whimsical illustrations show a newly-hatched dinosaur exploring the world with yoga poses that mimic things he sees around him.
The execution could be better; you would probably have trouble following many of these poses based only on the pictures and rhymes if you weren't familiar with them already. Sometimes the instructions are too technical--children are unlikely to know what deltoids or hamstrings are, for example--and often not thorough enough (are the legs supposed to be together or separated? Am I sitting on my feet or between them?). But as a cute way to introduce children to yoga, this is perfectly adequate. I especially appreciate the incorporation of a few concepts like being okay with failure and how to relax.

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if a dinosaur tried yoga, Dino Does Yoga delivers the answer with humor, charm, and a surprising dose of mindfulness. In this whimsical picture book, Dino - an enthusiastic, if not always graceful, yoga student - invites young readers to join him as he explores various poses, from downward dog to tree pose.
Sofie Engström von Alten’s text is both lighthearted and gently instructive, making yoga feel approachable for young children without ever slipping into didactic territory. The illustrations are quirky and colorful, capturing Dino’s facial expressions and clumsy attempts at balance in a way that will have readers giggling and trying the poses themselves.
More than just a silly read, Dino Does Yoga models resilience, calmness, and joy in movement. It’s a fantastic pick for parents and educators looking to introduce mindfulness or simply get kids moving in a fun and engaging way.
Dino hatches to a world with shapes he hasn’t seen. He tries to imitate the shapes and in doing so performs yoga poses. Each is described with the appropriate name such as warrior two and three poses. This book has bright, fun illustrations. They will make a child want to try the yoga poses. Maybe the adult will join in too?! I would and I’ve never tried yoga. Soviet Engstrom von Allen has provided a way to get a child way from the screen and into physical activity in an exciting way.
I received an ARC from the author through Goodreads. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book.
I really liked this book. The words and poses should be simple enough that most kids can do them. It does a good job of encouraging the reader to want to the poses and copy Dino's actions. The artwork was good, the only problem was that Dino has a different hip shape so one pose didn't look quite right when someone copied it. But I'm probably over thinking it and kids wouldn't even notice it.
An excellent yoga starting book and does a good job of encouraging participation.
I received this book as part of a Goodreads Giveaway. Thanks Goodreads! I don't want to be too harsh, but this book was just ok; nothing particularly stood out about it. It is a nice, basic introduction to yoga poses. The poses are titled, but would have preferred a small description of them. The illustrations are plain and simple, but effective. For what its worth, I gifted it to my niece, who loves dinos, but it hasn't motivated her to try yoga yet!
Adorable book to help teach kids yoga poses. The illustrations and language in the book is both age-appropriate and appealing to children. I won this book on a goodreads giveaway and highly recommend this book to parents with children, it is a great read for the kids and parents.
This is a cute little book that I think kids will enjoy. It will be wonderful to help integrate movement into storytime. I think this kids will find it fun and funny. I plan to take my kids on an outside storytime and read them this and do the poses with them and ask them to notice nature.
What a great book for young children and adults who have never done yoga. Dino learns a set of poses, including Downward Dino Pose, that are real poses for beginners and experts alike. A wonderful book and practice to share with your kids.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. My nephew and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great book to introduce little ones to yoga. Easy to read, easy to follow and the illustrations were adorable. Definitely recommend for anyone with little ones.
Really cute book to teach little ones some yoga moves. Apparently I have one move down pat. That's the relaxation mode. Think I'll go practice it some more
This book is a gem! It includes yoga poses that a child can do in a format that will appeal to the beginning reader. I received m y copy free through a goodreads giveaway.
Oh gosh, it's so cute! My daughter loves it & loves trying the yoga poses. I have a friend who has a 1 yr old daughter who loves dinosaurs. I'll be sending her the book soon.
