Maxine Lee was born in Liverpool, Merseyside, where she still lives with her partner and their two boys. She taught a range of creative subjects before taking a step back to concentrate on her career as an author/illustrator. Her debut children's book, Pi-Rat, was published in August 2013 by Caterpillar Books in the UK.
Bring your pirate voice if you're going to read this! It makes the word play so much more fun. Without giving away too much, the story is all about imagination and imaginative play. With few words and fun illustrations, it won't take too many readings before your kids will want to voice Pi-Rat or one of his buccaneers.
Simple but cute story about a fearsome pirate whose arch enemy is the dreaded Mum-rat. A nice enough story for talking about imaginative play, but nothing special.
So, not a preschool book about pi or pi day, but rather a rat who pretends he's a pirate. A cute book that my 3yo son loved. The ending took him a second read through but he got it
Do pirates really have the most fun? Is there nothing that their afraid of? One little rat is the captain of a ship notably known as The Soapy Dodger. He and his motley crew will eat your dinner, and steal your treasure. These little rascals don't abide by any rules. Big scary green crocodiles don't scare them and neither do big toothy sharks looking for a pirate snack. But, low and behold, something is out there that has the pirates re-thinking their misbehavin' ways. There is something out in the water and on the land and it's big, and hairy and the crew of pirates are bound to be doomed. Could it be a momster? You'll have to read the story to see.
Oversized colorful pictures along with loads of piratey words is what young readers will find displayed across the pages. Young mateys will be taken away by all the little hidden treasures that can be found within the pages. Parents and teachers can use this charming tool to help toddlers identify objects, animals, shapes and colors. The surprise twist at the end is also a very special treat.
Nothing too unusual going on here--the usual pirate stuff, and as is often the case, it turns out to be a bathtub adventure. The art is delightful and this is simple enough for very young pirate lovers. I am removing a possible 4th star for the cover, which has a totally unnecessary cut-out, which will shorten the life of this bound to be popular title.
Another take on a pirate bathtub adventure, though in this you don't know he's in the tub until the end which is kind of a nice surprise. I still prefer Bubble Bath Pirates but this one could be fun for kids who like rats and more cartoony stuff.
A pirate story about a rascally rat that we find out at story's end is creating the entire adventure in his imaginative bathtub play. Simple text and digital artwork make this a good pirate-themed book for the toddler/younger PreK crowd.
I was really disappointed that this was not about math. Once I got over that, I admitted that it is a fun and exciting pirate book for toddlers. Might be good for story time. Recommended for ages 2-4.
LOVED this book. What a quick, fun read! If you can do a pirate voice, I highly recommend it. The ending is really cute and the illustrations are exciting.
