When rising star DCS George Masters is taken ill after a crime scene accident, he is sent to the countryside to recover.

Whilst on a walk to help his convalescence, a young boy approaches him and asks for help in finding his daddy. Masters asks when the boy last saw his father, and the answer puts Masters on alert: "On Tuesday morning."

Despite knowing there could have been many reasons the father hasn't come home, Masters' instincts tell him that something is not right. When the father's name ties into a murder at a bank that his partner DCI Bill Green is working on, the mystery only grows. These two seasoned policemen will have to use all their wits to find the answers. How does a small town father fit into the robbery and murder up in London?

I hadn't read this one previously but I think it may be one of the best of the Masters & Green series.
It is a bit dated in parts but not too much as it's less than 40 years old. Certain clues were fairly obvious but that did not detract from a story that had good characters and an intriguing plot.

When Detective Chief Superintendent George Masters is attacked by a man with a syringe, he subsequently contracts Hepatitis B, putting him out of action for an extended period of time. The family travels to a remote village on the Cornish coast for a period of convalescence.

For awhile Masters is listless, with little interest in food or much else. Then one morning he is approached by five-year-old Oliver Holtby, who asks him, "Please would you find my Daddy for me?" It seems that James Holtby, Oliver's father, had gone to Exeter for a job interview a few days before but had not returned.

Masters is re-energized by Oliver's request. After he calls Scotland Yard to ask about James Holtby, he is immediately contacted by his colleague Bill Green. It seems that James Holtby is the key witness in a case of bank robbery and murder that Green has been investigating. With Masters back in limited action, the old team is reunited.

This is one of my favorite entries in the series. The meaning of the title isn't revealed until the final chapter.

Due to an attack on him detective superintendent George Masters is spending several months recuperating in Blumaryon, Cornwall, when he is approached by 5 year old Oliver Holtby asking him to find his missing father. This it seems is just what Masters need to aid his recovery. While back in London DCI Green and his team are investigating a bank robbery which ended in a murder.
An entertaining mystery

An interesting plot bogged down by endless endless blabbing to no account, rampant politeness, and eating!!! They didn't miss a meal!!! For half the book you had no real idea where things were headed, for the other half you had a kinda sorta idea. The last 20 or so pages got to the point. A long, often tedious wait it was too.

Excellent

Detective Chief Superintendent Masters is stabbed with a dirty needle during a chase for a gang of youths. Over the next few weeks he loses weight and his appetite. His wife Wanda is at her wits end so she calls Detective Chief Inspector Green who is one of her husband's colleagues, he tells her that he will send the police doctor to their house. In the meantime a gang of bank robbers has gotten away with a large amount of cash and shot dead one of the bank staff. AC Crime Anderson wants DCS Masters on the job unfortunately DCS Masters has contracted Serum Hepatitis from the dirty needle and needs rest and recuperation. A friend has a cottage in Cornwall and agrees to DCS Masters and his wife using the cottage for just that purpose. One day whilst George Masters is looking out to sea using binoculars his wife had purchased for him a small boy approaches him and asks him to help find his daddy who just happened to be the witness to the bank robbery in London.
