About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

Had a great coffee time in Madikeri coffee estate along with all the characters. Short read but interesting 👌.Ganesh solved the problem in a brilliant way and Vasanth's humour is enjoyable. Recommended!

A story without much depth. Good for a quick casual read. Motive is weak, so is the plot.

“Edhaiyum oru murai” la vara antagonist oda character is what made it so interesting. But this story lags with an amateurish chess player who couldn’t plan a better crime.

Tha infamous Ganesh & Vasanth duo are the protogonist in this novel. When Ganesh is so desperate to go on for a vacation, there was a call from a rich man to play chess to his remote hill estate. They come to know that this rich man's wife has gone missing. They started investigation and what happens is the story. It has a upside down twist at the end. More than the investigation part, I personally enjoyed the story settings (estate in coorg). Sujathas narration about the place. Ganesh & Vasanth conversation, very importantly I admired sujathas effort towards explaining the chess game between ganesh/vasanth and the rich man. It turns out to be more enjoyable if reader knows chess. Recommended read for a light/pleasent read!

Not Interesting

One of the uninteresting Sujatha stories. I didnt like it, maybe because the crime had never happened and a flat story line

This one is a really short read and a good time pass.

This novel was written a little later in Sujatha's life and he has ensured his characters are also aged. The legandary duo Ganesh and Vasanth, return in this one and it almost gives a vibe of both not in their A Game in terms of age, health and their chemistry. I am not sure if there is any other Ganesh Vasanth book after this, but it almost seems like they are meeting for one last time.

And this one a slightly interesting premise where a rich estate owner invites Ganesh to play chess with him out of the blue. And Ganesh takes up the challenge and back of the mind he knows and we know its not out of the blue and somethings up.

The estate, the hill station and characters are all described well in his usual style.

This is def a good read !

சுஜாதா தெரிந்தவருக்கு கனேஷ் வசந்த் தெரியும். சுஜாதாவுக்கு வயதான போதும் கனேஷ் வசந்த் என்றுமே இளமையாக தான் இருந்தார்கள். பெரும்பாலும் சுஜாதாவின் கதைகளின் second half இல் entry கொடுக்கும் இருவரும் தான் இதில் main characters! கனேஷ் வசந்த்-சுஜாதா..சுவாரசியத்திற்கு குறைவில்லாமல் நகர்கிறது கதை. நிறைய சுஜாதா கதைகளை படித்திருப்பதால் இது இப்படி தான் முடியும் என்று எளிதில் ஊகிக்க முடிகிறது. துளியும் போர் அடிக்காமல் இறுதி வரை விறுவிறுப்பாகவே இருக்கிறது. நம்மையும் காப்பி எஸ்ட்டேட்டுக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்று ஒரு தரமான சஸ்பெண்ஸ் கதையை படைத்திருக்கிறார் சுஜாதா.

An unusual mystery

The genius of this short novel, starring Ganesh Vasanth, is the parallel use of the game of chess along with the flow of the story. The end was a bit too fast, like a round of scotch rather than a glass wine. Even the construction could have been a bit more deceptive - the reader is definitely expecting the unusual and so the surprise is not that huge when it comes.

ஒரு குறுகிய வாசிப்பு, ஒரு மினி விசாரணை. ஒரு 2 மணி நேரத்தில் முடித்து விடலாம். கொஞ்சம் சுமார் ரகம். வசந்த் வாயிலாக வாத்தியார் விளையாடி இருக்கிறார். புது வார்த்தைகளை குறித்து வைத்து இருக்கிறேன் அங்கங்கே. பொழுது கிடைக்கும் பொழுது விக்கிப்பீடியாவில் தூர் வாரலாம் என்று.

கதை சுவாரசியமாக இருந்தது.எந்த இடத்திலும் போர் அடிக்கவில்லை.4-5 கதாப்பாதிரங்கள் தான்...கொஞ்ச நாளா கலைஞர் டிவி யில் வரும் ராஜேஸ் குமார் நாவல் குறும்படம் பார்கிறேன்.இதுவும் அதே ஸ்டைலில் இருந்தது.முடிவு இப்படி தான் இருக்கும் என்று ஒரு யூகம் இருந்தது.அதை போல் முடிந்ததில் ஒரு சிறு வருத்தம்.கதை நடக்கும் இடம் பெங்களூர் அருகில் என்பதால் இடத்தை பற்றி அவர் சொல்லும் போது பிடித்திருந்தது.

குறிப்பு : இதில் வரும் கணேஷ்-வஸந்த் ... பல தொடர் கதைகளில் வருவார்களாம்..[நான் இதுவரை 2-3 சுஜாதா புக் தான் படிச்சிருக்கேன்..அதனால் என்னால் அதை பற்றின விஷயம் ஏதும் சொல்ல முடியவில்லை]

இரவு கொஞ்ச நேரம் படித்து , மறுநாள் படித்து முடித்து தான் மற்ற வேலையை துவங்கினேன்...
