I'm afraid I made a mistake buying this book. There I was browsing in W H Smith when I saw this title at a highly discounted price. It looked perfect for me. It was about D-Day and it was published by Times Books and it was cheap so I took it straight to the checkout. What I should have done is read more carefully the information on the flap of the dust jacket to get a better idea of what the book actually covered. The emphasis in this book is very much on the maps that were used in the planning and execution of the allied invasion of Europe. There are very many examples shown of historic maps used by the invading forces to locate precisely key German defensive positions. However, these are not the kind of maps required by a reader to get a clearer idea of the strategy and tactics of both sides in the conflict. So this book was very disappointing for me as it was not really what I was expecting. It is a fine book, it is just that it covers an aspect of the Normandy invasion that I am not particularly interested in.
