I have mixed feelings about this book.
A very interesting book with an amazing ensemble of immortals and a quite good story.
Marcus is an immortal who lived for more than 2000 years to revenge his wife's death whom he believed was killed by a vampire.
Eventually he finds out the name of the vampire that killed his wife and in the process he finds a newly turned vampire - a vampling - Diana.
He takes charge of her transformation and feeds her regularly with hopes that she might be able to tell him where her Sire's sire, Claudius, is.
In the process they both fall in love to fall straight into Cludius's waiting arms.
Marcus discover's that his wife was in a relationship with Claudius before her death and she was in fact sick and died on her own.
Eventually Marcus and Diana are helped by Alexander, another immortal and Marcus's friend.

The story looked interesting enough but I think it got lost in descriptions. It is one of the most descriptive stories that I read until now and that didn't work. At the same time the main characters spent a lot of time in their heads and again didn't work.
The narration was slow, slow to the point of becoming boring. Only the last 20% of the book were packed with action.
In the end I am still not sure why Marcus grieved his wife death for thousands of years. He was not faithful to her and their marriage was just in name. Thousands of years is a lot of time to spend grieving and having nightmares so not getting an explanation it made no sense.
Revenge I can understand but not his grief and lack of relationships.
The way the conflict was resolved was sudden. I wasn't sure if Claudius had them or they escaped till the next page.
A bit jumpy for may taste in the end.
The author used some Latin words and gave the feeling that Marcus kept his old ways but when recalling his past the word OK was used in some instances. I think I prefer if the author either sticks to the old words if they are understood and properly used or just drops it so it doesn't become a joke.

So, story had enough elements to be great. A very interesting supernatural mix: vampires, immortals, gods. But the writing style was too much for me, combined with a very slow paced action and I wanted to be done with it.
It will appeal to the supernatural romance fans but if you want a fast paced book this might not be it for you.
Clearly it was not enough to me.

(Not suitable for readers under 18)

I have a new rule: No starting a Monica La Porta novel when I can't afford losing sleep. I opened up "The Lost Centurion" on my Kindle one evening, planning to read for half an hour. The half an hour turned into nearly an all-nighter.

Immortal Marcus has been relentlessly hunting Claudius, the vampire who had murdered his wife, for over two centuries. He gets a tip of the whereabouts of another vampire who can help him locate the killer. Marcus goes to meet the informant, Virgil, and finds himself in the middle of a tussle between Claudius's henchmen and Virgil, who had "turned" a human girl, Diana, without Claudius's permission. The penalty: death. Determined that his informant will not die before telling him Claudius's location, Marcus intervenes. He and Virgil manage to overcome his assailants, but not before Virgil has been mortally wounded. His last words are not the information Marcus is seeking, but an appeal to the Centurion to protect his vampling.

Frustrated, Marcus hides Diana, breaking the pact between the vampires and immortals, thus endangering his life too. The possibility that Diana might know Claudius's location is his only motivation for protecting her, revenge having made him myopic. However, his motivation shifts as he begins developing feelings for her.

La Porta has taken an overused subject in fiction-- vampires-- and has created a unique storyline involving the undead. I didn't feel like I was reading a book I'd read a hundred times before. La Porta is incredibly creative. Plus, I love her writing style. She is clearly a reader who doesn't like getting bogged down in lengthy or irrelevant description and doesn't subject her readers to them, either. Her stories clip along at a pleasant pace and she doesn't divert the reader down any rabbit holes, which is probably why I can blow through her novels. No "yawning" moments.

Be warned, though. If you read the Ginecean Chronicles, "The Lost Centurion" is racy. Intimate scenes are written tactfully, but are explicit. For readers seeking a steamy page-turner, you'll most likely be satisfied. Marcus is potent.

I was given this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I am not associated with the author but was glad for the opportunity.

I will start by saying the the author is very descriptive with the location of each scene. Yes, you could ALMOST be there but I still didn't feel drawn to these places (even though I adore Rome). The descriptions didn't invoke emotion but simply told you basically what it looked like and where things were.

I wish that I could have cared about these characters more! I really hated Marcus's pet name for Diana for two reasons: One, because he is supposed to be beyond human emotion and Two, because it feels contrived. He & Alexander are modern men (observed in the way they rib & slap each other in conversation) and then he uses such an old world kind of lingo on someone he has no connection to. The relationship didn't develop enough for my taste. There was a connection through feeding not the exchange of emotion and then BOOM they're in love.

I was also not a fan of the flashbacks because they seemed to be written for a manuscript instead of a book. If actors were being given direction between each scene, it would have made more sense to watch. There was no notice that what you were reading was shifting gears on you. It just happened and jumped back to the story.

I hate to be talked down to and I felt that with the use of the proper names for items as they were called in Ancient Rome. There wasn't a reasonable description for what they were so it read with a condescending tone. There was no purpose for the car collection bit, either, except to throw in the authors knowledge of a couple of sports cars. They didn't add to the storyline at all.

Overall, I'm not a fan of this book. The author writes dialog well (which I appreciate) and had a good storyline. Maybe with more development (ie more pages), the story could have built on itself to convince me. It all just felt too rushed to be cohesive.

Marcus, given the "gift" of immortality by the god Apollo, sees it as more of a curse. He has travelled far and wide in his long life but has finally returned to Rome. He is hoping to finally catch up the vampire who killed his wife, Claudius.

He comes across a nest of vampires and saves a newbie vampire, who was turned against the nest leaders wishes. There follows a beautiful story of revenge, misconstrued truths and new love. There is a great mixture of adventure, thriller and romance to satisfy most folks. I'm a history buff and studied Ancient Rome and the references and feelings evoked by his re-walking his native city were details and as accurate as can be.

The characters have issues and are not your average cookie cutter hero/heroine. They have immense horrors in their past but retain their honour and mostly importantly their sense of humour!

The Immortal Greek, Alexanders book is next in the series. I cannot wait to read his story!!!

Marcus has had everything he loved ripped away from him by a vampire but he must now save a vampling in order to find the whereabouts of the man who killed his wife. Could there ever be anything bright in his life again or will his immortal life be a bleak shadow until his curse is lifted?

Diana was an escort who had cancer but one of her clients took a liking to her, turning her into a vampire before she could be killed by her infection. Then he was killed and she was captured by some brute of a man who keeps insisting that he will not hurt her. Could this Roman really be there to help or did she just get plunged into a future just as bad as her past?

For those who love architecture but time period pieces are not something that thrills you this book takes forever to get through and is for the most part a very boring experience. At least I was not a fan, but I completely understand to each their own and many enjoy time period pieces. Fight with the Centurion as he battles his past and for his future.

Not your typical vampire story

This interesting story has a handful of glaring mistakes (wrong word, missing word, capitalization, etc.) that pull the reader from the book, but overall, the detail of ancient Roman life juxtaposed with modernity makes for a fascinating story.

Marcus was saved by Apollo, with the gift of immortality, after suffering a deadly battle wound and has been searching for the man who killed his wife for over two thousand years. Marcus’ search has brought him back to Rome and now, finally, he has a lead on the vampire, Claudius, who was seen leaving his house the night his wife, Aurelia, died.

Everything changes for Marcus the night he rescues Diana Valente. As Marcus arrives to meet Virgil, the informant, he’s drawn into a brawl between Virgil and several other vampires. Virgil has turned a human girl into a vampling to save her life but without her consent. After Virgil is fatally wounded Marcus finds himself cast in the role of Diana’s protector. She is totally reliant on Marcus and knowing nothing of the world of vampires and immortals she struggles with the changes taking place.

Claudius’ vampire nest is now hunting Diana, and as Marcus has forfeited the protection of the pact made between Vampires and Immortals by becoming a renegade, his life is also in danger. Claudius, who demands the return of his vampling, has no intention of giving up the chase. Marcus must choose between saving Diana or avenging his wife’s death.

The descriptions of Rome, past and present, and the places in Italy are beautifully written and paint a vivid picture; Marcus’ house, the Forum, Alexander’s villa to name a few, giving a real sense of Rome as it is and how it was. The plot winds its way along with some surprises and unexpected twists with plenty of action and romance. The relationship between Marcus and Diana evolves unpretentiously and the characters are written convincingly. And I like the different take on the vampire angle. This is a series I’ll follow.

What can I say about this book ? In all honesty it was a book I'd look at the title of and think, not my kind of story and pass it by ! But someone recommend it so I thought I'd give it a try and am I glad I did.

I really enjoyed this book, I took to Marcus straight away, he's focused on revenge and as the story unfolds we see him questioning what he's always believed.
when Diana is basically forced into his life we begin to see changes in him. Her "kind" are the enemy but his growing feelings towards her make him see her for who she is not what she is and tho Marcus is single minded in his century's old quest for revenge of the death of his wife, again we start to see their life together was not quite as perfect as it originally appeared !
I truly loved Marcus and Diana together but as a vampling she belongs to the nests master, for him to own or kill as he sees fit, throw in a long standing feud between him and Marcus and you know things are going to get bloody.
Will this Centurion have his heart destroyed again just as he's starting to live after centuries of just existing and how much is he willing to give up to save Diana ? ....... You're gonna have to read it to find out.

I would definitely recommend this book.

Hands down the thing I enjoyed most about this book was the descriptions of Rome in the past as compared to the present. I truly felt as if I could visualize the scenes in my mind and I just wanted to be transported. I also really enjoyed hearing Marcus call Diana, "Little Thing." I know it's a small thing to be pleased with but with all the various pet names out there, it was refreshing to finally see one that I haven't read a million times over.

Aside from that though, this book was a quick yet slow going read for me. I know that sounds contradictory but it's true. It wasn't difficult to read at all but yet I didn't feel compelled to finish it or to flip the page to see what happens next. It finally got interesting for me about 70% of the way through and I enjoyed that the story took a different route than what I expected it to, which is why it got 4 stars instead of the 3 I was initially going to give it. I did appreciate the HEA as well!

This honest review was given in exchange for an ARC of the book and I am in no way associated with the author, the publishing house, etc.

This was a wonderful story, full of rich, nuanced emotion. The city of Rome added to its aura.
I immediately liked the two main characters, Diana and Marcus. Actually - I really loved Marcus! (I like male characters who are hard and tough, yet also have a soft side).
After reading The Lost Centurion - who was lost in so many ways, yet put back on track via the power of love - I am looking forward to reading more of the writer's work, namely The Immortal Greek, and the Broken Angel.
I loved it!
Kudos to Monica La Porta!

Once more another thrilling book from Monica. I have loved reading The Immortals series and can't wait to read more. Again found it so hard to put this book down. The Story drew me right into it, my heart went out at times to the characters. I felt their pain, fear, excitement and love through her wonderful descriptions. I can't wait to read the next books about their children. Your imagination is endless. Thank you again Monica........Delphine Davies.

While I'm generally not a big fan of romance stories (paranormal or otherwise), I did enjoy this story. I loved the unique setting - modern Rome with flashbacks to its ancient glory. The characters and overall setting were well written, the plot brisk and engaging. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys romance and / or paranormal stories.

Bravo!

A well paced, throughly enjoyable drama! Tightly crafted, well researched without ever reading like research. The characters are believable and sympathetic from the start. Their actions and backstories are complex and compelling. I highly recommend this book.

So, all in all this was a good read. There were a few small things I wish would have been a little different. Maybe if there was less time spent describing all of the scenery and a bit more communication between the hero and heroine I would have enjoyed the book more. I ended up skimming half paragraphs at a time because it was just describing a room with unnecessary detail, but the story itself was really good and I liked the characters. The main reason I'm only giving this a 3 star rating is because there were a LOT of rapey vibes happening in the last third of the book and that always makes me really uncomfortable. I think there are better ways to make bad guys be bad and come off as scary than using rape or sexual assault.

All in all, I plan on continuing the series. Like I said, the characters were good and the world the author painted was definitely interesting and draws you in.

A Roman and A Vampling

WOW is all I have to say. I have been saying that a lot lately about the books I read. I love supernatural books especially ones about vampires. This one was different. This one not only had vampires but that of the Roman Gods. I loved the mixture of modern and ancient times intersected with each other. The Marcis in my head was like the ancient Romans I studied in school. Of course he was dreamy but he was so much more. Diana was a force to be reckoned with in her own right. I loved watching/reading her. She grew into the person she was meant to be. This was the first book by this author I have read. I hope Diana and Marcus’s story continues. Now I need to go day-dream about going to Rome and the Amalfi Coast.....

.....happy reading!!!!

The writing was fine...but not my style

So this is a case where it’s not really the author’s fault. The actual writing was fine. I just didn’t like the story. That’s just personal preference. So some people might have loved it. Personally, I hated how so much was out of control for the lead characters. It was a bit depressing how they were basically tortured for the last quarter of the book. The author tried to tie a bow on it in the end, but it just wasn’t a journey I really wanted to go on. I felt no joy out of reading it. I only finished it because I couldn’t stand to leave the characters in such dire disturbing situations without knowing how it ended. Not my style.

Marcus is made into an immortal by Apollo and after travelling lots is back in Rome to find and kill the vampire who killed his wife. We then read through a series of situations that contain examples of the emotions of revenge, an analysis of what really is the truth as opposed to hearsay and revenge (does it really make you feel good?) I loved the depth of the characters and how they managed all these uncertainties. The romance in the story was well written and enjoyable without being to sweet and cloying. An enjoyable story that was a great introduction to this series.

Heart stopping excitement

Talk about a rollercoaster ride while you read this book. This book will have you ties up in knots trying to figure put whether it will end up being a Happy Ever After or not. This book will have you one moment in tears over something that happened, then wanting to throw the book at the author, while screaming at her.

You have to fight with yourself not to skim the book to the end to find put what happens. You will be on the edge of your seat the whole time.

God I loved this ride.

Meh??? I'm starting to think that I'm losing interest in PNR. Then I read Rebecca Zanetti's new Dark Protectors book and realize that I'm just losing interest in boring, poorly written PNR. While I'm sure there will be many others who will like this book/series, I will not be one of them. I am on to something better.

Yes!

I loved Marcus! He's been trying to get revenge for his wife's death, and it's been over 2000 years.
He's strong, fierce, and lonely. He saves Diana's life, a newly turned vampire, and they find themselves drawn to each other. I
I think, after 2000 years, he deserves love and happiness! Yes, there is a HEA!

Really enjoyed this book, although I have read similar books before so not a completely new idea to me. I found the characters engaging and I love Rome so enjoyed the places and descriptions in the book. Well constructed story and world building with well developed characters.
I will definitely be reading the next book in the series.

Immortals vs. Vampires

Romantic, emotional, entertaining, and fun, the only things wrong with this novella are (1) it’s over too soon and (2) it contains a few episodes of graphic sex that are off-putting to me personally. Others will like it.
