Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

4.5 Gum Drop stars!



Kristen Ashley fans rejoice! If you’re looking for a KA book that will give you the same type of feels as her Burg series, pick up Complicated and give it a listen. KA is one of my favorite authors, and I’m a complete audio whore (I’ve listened to over 30 this year alone) so when I heard she was releasing an audio exclusive, I one clicked that baby on release day. For it being a longish audio, it didn’t take me much time at all to listen to it. I didn’t want to push pause once I started it. I LOVE it when an audio book consumes me like that.

Hixon Drake is the sheriff of a small town. He’s recently divorced and has three children. Greta Dare is a hair stylist in that small town, and she also sings at a local place on the weekends. When Hix and Greta meet, sparks fly. Even though their timing couldn’t be worse, their chemistry is off the charts. I loved both of these characters and I loved the relationship they had. Not only were Greta and Hix amazing, but there were a slue of wonderful secondary characters. Greta’s brother Andy (my heart) and Hix’s children being just a few.

Just like Ashley’s ‘Burg’ series, there was a little bit of mystery/suspense thrown in, but it didn’t take away to the story. In fact, the way things went down with that towards the end only made me love Hix even more. He and Greta were everything.

It’s been a while since I’ve loved a KA book as much as I loved this one. It made me smile, made me cry, and was an all around gorgeous love story. Since it’s only available on audio, I’ll throw in that the narration was great. I thought both narrators embodied their characters. If you’re looking for a book that will give you those ‘old school KA feels’ with a fantastic alpha male and a wonderful heroine, pick up Complicated!

Holy hell, that woman’s gonna kill me with her epilogues.



And yes. Five shiny stars.



Because this was DA BOMB .

Unlike her previous book.

She toned down on her what-the-fuck-does-that-mean syntax. Maybe somebody finally told her nobody understood shit so she decided to use normal, human-comprehensible English instead. Or maybe it's just an one-off thing.

Anyhow, it felt good to not feel stupid for once.

No surprise I loved it so much. It reminded me of the 'Burg series. Plus, it ticked all my boxes: family-oriented story, small town setting, cop hero, great heroine, amazing secondary characters, crime-solving subplot, more his POV chapters than hers.

Thank God I didn't read any of the reviews because I wouldn't have given it a chance. I almost gave up during the first half. Not because it was bad. It was very gripping, actually.

It was because I couldn’t stand all that angst and rejection anymore.

No, that's not it.

I was afraid their love wouldn't be epic enough for me. Too many hell-no elements:

He’s still hung up on his ex-wife.



He adored his ex-wife. He didn’t want a divorce.



He’s still physically attracted to his ex-wife in the beginning.



He doesn’t want a relationship with the heroine.



He regrets sleeping with her.



He even gives her that dreaded I-am-not-that-guy speech.



He pursues the heroine and then he pushes her away repeatedly. Again and again and again.



Feeling sick, are we?

Hell, I had to put my Kindle down a few times and cover my eyes and ears. Talk about cringe-worthy.

But I’m glad I pulled through the first half because damn, what a story. Amazing characterization. Fabulous character growth. Gripping storyline. Incredible writing.

And holy fuck, what a slow burn.



As realistic as it gets.

I like realistic romance. We all read romance books for enjoyment but we all need something to grasp onto. When we read books, we are unconsciously comparing ourselves and the world around us to the characters and the story. How can we fully enjoy a book if we can’t relate to any of the characters or find the story implausible?

If you decide to give this book a chance, don’t give up during the first half just because the hero is a pompous ass or the heroine annoying. It's complicated. LOL

Don’t worry. This is not a love triangle. The ending won't be bittersweet. You won’t feel betrayed in the end. There’s nothing meh about their love. It’s epic and it feels real.

For me, this book is a perfect example of a perfect book. And you know what? I really dig that unrequited love thing.

Overall Opinion: Ms. Ashley did it! She gave us a groveling hero!! In KA typical fashion the H was an a$s and he did mess up, but he actually expressed his mistakes and groveled! Love it. I also love that the h was strong enough to demand better from him! I really enjoyed this book, and I think it was along the lines of her storytelling in the early Colorado Mountain series -- which is my favorite of her works. Hopefully she keeps these kind of stories coming 🤞🏻

*Re-Read Note: It was an enjoyable re-read. I think I'm going to keep the rating the same, because it was that enjoyable. I liked both of the mcs, I appreciated the grovel, and I liked the interactions with the H's kids and the h's sister. The suspense aspects to this were kind of ruined this time because I remembered a lot -- but they were still pretty good. I still say this is reminiscent of KA's earlier (and my favorite) works like the Colorado Mountain and Burg series. Overall, it was a great one to pick up again and revisit during a book funk!

**2nd Re-Read Note: This was still an enjoyable re-read. I dropped my rating by the few points because I felt like the last part of the dragged too much and I did skim some. I do feel like the epilogue could've been better, but it was still a lot better than many books I've read recently! Overall, this will probably be one that I'll re-read again in the future because I still like the storyline and characters so much.

***3rd Re-Read Note: Not much to add here. I was in the mood for this one again for some reason after watching some cop show. Liked the characters, liked their relationship, and liked the conflicts...still skimmed some towards the end but will continue to be a worthwhile re-read for me.

****4th are-Read Note: I was in the mood for KA after some not so great reads and decided to revisit these characters in a book that I know I enjoy. Nothing really to add to the review, though I did skim over some of the non-relationship stuff tbh.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Greta and Hix's story. The story starts when they find themselves in bed the next morning after a heated night together. Hix is newly divorced, and to say his life with his kids and ex wife is complicated is an understatement. Add in a murder in a town that hasn't seen one in over 20 years, and he really doesn't have the right midset to start a new relationship. Greta just wants the peace the town offers for her and her disabled brother, and for them to get away from her crazy mother. They can't fight the pull they feel towards one another, and circumstances has them holding on to each other throughout all of the complicated mess. There are some cute family moments, some drama, some sexy times...and they get a HEA ending.

POV: This alternated between Greta's POV and focusing on Hix in 3rd person narrative.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed, and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: No, but they do move rather quickly.

H rating: 4 stars. Hix. I liked him. He was a great father, and I liked how he was upfront with his emotions and admitted when he made mistakes.

h rating: 4.5 stars. Greta. I really liked her. I loved her loyalty and innate need to take care of those she cared for.

Sadness level: Low/moderate. I did tear up a few times, but I never needed any tissues.

Push/Pull: Yes They both push away at times (H more so), and I'd say the H is the main pursuer of the relationship.

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Safe sex: Yes Mentions of condom use until the h is on birth control. I don't remember any mention of std statuses or previous practices for either of them.

OW/OM drama: Yes The H's newly ex-wife causes some drama for the couple. The H's ex husband also shows up and causes some drama.

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes They are separated shortly, but there was no mention or suggestion of other partners during this time.

Possible Triggers: Yes Divorce (both h and H off page), H has children with ex, traumatic brain injury due to drunk driving accident (side character - off page), verbally abusive and neglectful parent (h - off and on page), and assault/murder (on page).

Closure: This had good closure in a good epilogue and they get a HEA ending.

How I got it: I paid the $3.99 on amazon for it.

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

🎧 2nd Read, Oct. 2021 — 5 Stars

Dear God, what kind of woman/wife are you to make a ploy against your husband by divorcing him into buying you a diamond ring for your twentieth anniversary?!?!? Yes, let me reiterate. The ex-wife of the H in this book divorced him because he refused to buy her a $25,000 diamond ring for their TWENTY YEAR ANNIVERSARY. Let’s not spoiled our kids lest they grow up spoiled, daft, and ungrateful.

“I’m stronger than that other guy.”
“You can’t know that.”
“I can because I know this, if you wanted a twenty-five thousand dollar ring for our anniversary, I’d take a second job to get it for you.”
I gasped.
And I stared.
“And that’s because in two days you gave me more than my wife did in nineteen years, notwithstanding our children and the fact she’s got issues, but she’s a good mother. That’s an uncomfortable realization, sweetheart. And she had her way of doin’ nice things. But she wasn’t you.”
“You can’t know that either.”
“I can. I do.”
Oh my God. — Hix (H) trying to convince Greta (h) to give them a chance.

🎧 1st Read, Oct. 2020 — 4.5 Stars

Complicated was a very uncomplicated read—despite all the things that could potentially lead to a disaster were this book not written by KA.

✓ A recently divorced H who has three teenage kids who are about as sweet and lovely as a unicorn but also . . . mature for their age;
✓ A hairstylist and part time singer h who has the nastiest woman on planet Earth to call mother and a brother she adores;
✓ Exes (OW/OM) who realise too late what a mistake they’ve made, now that the trash they abandoned have become someone else’s treasure;
✓ A murderer on the loose.

As you can see, this book comes with a HEAVY baggage. At this point, you probably have a few concerns, such as:

Is the H still hung up on his ex wife? How can he be married to her for almost two decades and still ended up getting a divorce? How can ANYONE? Is the love between the H and h believable?

Well, worry not because you’ll get your answers and explanations in this book. Loving Complicated is as easy as breathing, and here’s why.

-ˏˋ The CHARACTERS ˎˊ-

— Hixon Drake (42)

Our H is a great guy. In that I mean, he’s loyal and protective and NOT an asshole. I liked him pretty much since the beginning. He’s a good sheriff (leader), a caring father, a firm and patient boyfriend, and exceptional at love making. 😆 I loved how he handled things. He made a couple of asshole-y errors, but he was so excellent with his grovelling.

— Greta Dare (38)

Our h is wonderful. She’s a simple woman. Not to say that she’s cheap cuz girl’s got taste, but she makes good with the cards she’s dealt with and doesn’t take 💩 from anyone. She was strong, but I also loved the moments when her vulnerabilities shone through.

-ˏˋ The RELATIONSHIPS ˎˊ-

— Romance

Communication and trust is key. Two things that I think both Hix and Greta showed a great deal of in this book. They talk and listen and be real with each other. I think that when you’re in their age and have led the lives they had, there’s no time for games. Though I must admit, Hix did give a good chase.

You know how the third act in a romance book can sometimes ruin the story for you? When the H or h is scared off into breaking up with each other? I’m here to inform you that doesn’t happen in this book, which pleases me and I think you will be too. 😌 There was an attempt, but it failed. Like I said, communication and trust.

— Exes

I was skeptical at first, especially knowing Hix’s history with his ex wife and how (what some would probably consider) fast he moved on with Greta. However, I believe that at their age they know what they want, what they’re doing, and it’s possible and more than okay to have experienced love prior to them finding each other.

I think the complications of their past relationships with their exes made their own relationship more realistic. Besides, it’s not just some random detail being thrown in for the sake of drama. But those complications were actually addressed and dealt with. So yeah, I loved the big “showdown” or closure they each had with their exes.

— Family

There’s nothing hotter (apart from Hix’s dirty talking) than watching him being incredible with his kids, especially his two girls. Greta has a brother whom she’s been caring practically since he’s a babe that now he feels like her own. He has a “condition” that I honestly don’t fully understand myself, so I can’t tell you. Regardless, I liked their dynamics too.

Greta doesn’t have the best mom. Seriously that old hag made Cinderella’s stepmother looked like a saint. And she’s Greta’s real mom. She was annoying and I wanted to run her over with a mower. I couldn’t relate with how Greta was handling her, but kudos to her because as much as I also pitied her mom, she deserved whatever’s gotten to her and then some.

-ˏˋ MISCELLANEA ˎˊ-

The murder was nice and tragically sad. I’m honestly still curious about the killer and wanted to know more than what was given. The stalker case too. I feel like it was just a side plot that didn’t amount to anything apart from providing Greta’s mom more amo to mess up her life. I also wish Greta’s brother’s “condition” was explained more/better.

Still with the petnames and cheesy songs game. It’s corny but we LURVE it. On top of that, those two are something that’s particular to KA books. The endearments are generic (e.g. darlings, honeys, babes) and most of the (I assume) country songs being referred to I don’t know, but don’t think I’d want it any other way either. Also, KA gives the best epilogue.

Bottom line, this book is very KA. It didn’t exactly hit me like a five star read, but I also don’t have any reasons not to round up the rating.

3.5 Smokey Stars

First things first, this review is geared towards a very specific group of readers, mainly those folks who used to set their watches to a KA new release but whose enthusiasm has taken a nose dive over recent years. Whether that be because you prefer your alpha males to speak in full and complete sentences, or because you feel like shaking every KA lady who says something like “It wasn’t good. It was GOOD” or maybe the slouchy sweater stream of thoughts and the like gets on your last good nerve.

It matters naught, my friend.

Whatever your reasons may be, I feel ya. I’m going to discuss the KA issues that normally bug the ever loving crap out of me and how I felt they were addressed in Complicated, as well as some general observations. You’re up, Greta and Hix!

After the inevitable fuck up, did KA allow the alpha to apologize in a timely and satisfactory manner?

Let me tell you a story about how I once had my heart broken by a little book called The Promise. Being a huge fan of KA for years at that point, I’d anxiously awaited the release of Frankie and Benny’s story since first reading At Peace and learning of the heartbreak Frankie experienced at the hands of Benny and his family. I just knew that when their story was told, the apologies would be epic. How could they not be after years of misguided abuse?



Imagine my confusion when that apology not only didn’t happen but the entire event was swept under the rug in the name of moving on. I knew she tended to roll that way given the gang up on Gwen in Mystery Man after HAWK DUMPED HER, but my thoughts on KA were seriously altered after that.

Sorry and all that jazz.

So, does Greta get her apology after Hix plays the douchebag card?

Yes. And for a KA hero, I thought it was a fairly decent one. Don’t get me wrong, he was a total and complete jerk the first two times he “scraped her off” as the kids say, but unlike other KA books I’ve read, Hix goes for a direct and verbal apology rather than the grunts and “your cutes” I’ve come to expect. I left the scene a lot less pissed off than I’d anticipated so I’m giving it the win.

Is Hix still hung up on his baby mama?

I went into this knowing some readers couldn’t get past the fact that Hix didn’t want the divorce from his wife of 18 years and when he first hooks up with Greta, the divorce had only been final for three weeks.

Honestly, I had no problem with Hix and the way he moved on to Greta. The man’s 42. Like most people that age, he has a romantic history and has already experienced a first love, with children thrown into the mix for good measure.

Once those papers were signed, I never felt like he’d go back to his ex, even when given the chance several times. I know there are readers who want a hero who’s only loved one woman, but I would’ve balked at a man that age that DIDN'T have a bit of history under his belt.

The rambling descriptions: How much clothing talk are we dealing with here?

I’m one of those people that tend to bitch about KA’s rambling descriptions that can often go on and on for pages at a time, but then complain when traditional publishers come along and “tighten” up her work. I know, right?

I felt KA did pretty well with the fashion speak but man, did the descriptions of secondary characters and their life histories seem to take forever to get thru. I’m not going to lie, I did an awful lot of skimming during these parts and in the end, didn’t feel like I missed much because of it.

Full and complete sentences: Gone for good?

‘Fraid so, darlin’.



As far as the story itself goes, I loved the idea but the execution lacked a little. A murder plot that never really takes off, some mama drama on Greta’s side, a B&E incident that I’m still not sure relates to the actual story. For KA’s loyal fan base, I’m sure this book’s a hit. For a recovering KA loyalist like me, the book fell just a bit short of that mark.

Really! The relief!!



Can you tell I loved this book!



Well, I did!! So there.

Ka is back doing what KA does best!

I loved this book. Loved Hix, Loved Greta.

Loved his kids.

Hated Hope, mainly as she was 100% idiot! But by the end I thought she was maybe only 85% idiot.

Despise Greta's Mom!

This is a good ol' KA Asshole hero who is a stupid stupid head to start, realises he made a huge mistake (ok twice, he makes a huge mistake twice) but redeems himself, as we can understand a touch why he was an asshole, then turns into an awesome hero, with a good bit of suspense thrown in.

I loved it was a dual POV. Being in Hix's head certainly helped.

Overall, this was a proper KA read.

She does not just give you a story between two people. You get a whole cast of people to enjoy. A quirky town full of interesting characters. Secondary characters you would love to get their own story. People you love, people you hate, people you think need slapping repeatedly in the face with a kipper. People you feel for and people you will not forget.

Which brings us to Andy. Oh how I loved Andy, but oh how his story made me sad. He was a lovely sweet character but thinking of what he could have been. How his life was changed.

And in a way only KA can do, I have never been more upset over the death of a character that was not actually in the book, until after his murder. Seeing the fallout from Nat's death and hearing about his story, his family. All the people who thought so much of him. Heartbreaking.

And as I said elsewhere on GR on a discussion board.

Some ppl say they feel KA carries a book on long after another author would have finished it. IE once the couple gets together. But I love that. I love the comfort of knowing she does that. I like knowing they are going to be together from about 50% on wards, and properly together with no relationship drama coming up, just possibly outside drama. I love experiencing them living their life. When KA does that well, it is the best thing ever.

So all in, I loved this book, and it finished on a high. But there is a lingering sadness. Sadness for Hope and what she threw away, sadness for Nat, and what he will miss, and as it says in the book "hellaciously sad" for Andy and all that he will never be.

So I am left a strange mix of mostly happy and satisfied in the way a good book can make you. But a lingering sadness over what can not be.




Oh, and my thoughts on this being an audio book, so I have had to wait ages for it to come out on e book, which I wasn't massively bothered about before, as has been awhile since I was truly excited about a KA book. But now I have read it??



But like some of my favourite KA books I can see this being one I will re read many times.

I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to think when I found out that Kristen Ashley wrote a book exclusively for Audible. I thought it was a nice marketing strategy – but didn’t plan on buying it. And then I saw that lonely credit on my Audible balance and I thought – ok whatever. CLICK!!!!

Anyway, I was in the middle of listening to the latest John Sandford novel ‘Golden Prey‘, when I saw an amazing review by my friend Stacey and couldn’t push it out any longer. So, Golden Prey went on the back burner, and I was diving into COMPLICATED!!!

And OMG!!!!!
First thought I had was that it was a bit different from her regular work. It was less all over the place in regards to sentence structure, it had more dialogue, and an old school KA feel – which I loved.

The story was typically KA. Lovely alpha male, awesome dad, ex-husband of a woman who wanted him back, and who was falling heads over heels in love with a woman – even so he didn’t think it was the right time or the right woman.

It was sweet – REALLY SWEET!!!
One of those feel-good novels that leave me all gooey and glowing. Yep that was me – all gooey and glowing every time I walked to work, was out for a stroll or just sitting in my cozy chair with a cup of coffee – scratch that no coffee for me – but you get my drift.

COMPLICATED was awesome!! It was so much more than expected. And much BETTER than I thought it would be. Honestly, I was astonished by how much I LOVED it!!!

I adored the small town life in Nebraska. All the wonderful characters, the kids, the friends, and most of all Hix and Greta did it for me. Hix and Greta were the BOMB!! They were perfect for each other. They completed and complimented each other and filled places in each others lives that they didn’t even know were empty.

And the SEX – phew – wow – I was MELTING!!!! Which was not necessarily a good thing, since I was out and about, and I must have had a HUGE grin on my face. I can only hope my ear phones weren’t the ones that everyone could hear a mile coming.

All those naughty words for everyone to hear!!! YIKES!

I hated Greta’s mom – what a piece of work. That woman was like a broken record, going on and on. And NO, I for sure didn’t understand her method of parenting.

It was also hard to listen to Hix’s ex-wife trying to win him back, even so she was the one who broke their marriage in the first place. It was still sad hearing her go on and on about how much she loved him. It’s hard to be the one that is left behind. But she made her bed, so now she had to lie in it. Stupid mistakes that change lives in a second and afterwards all there is is regret. Same with Greta’s ex-husband. But that’s typical for KA – exes that regret their decisions when it’s too late!!!!

And OMG the epilogue! I think it was over 40 minutes long. Just fantastic and so sweet!!!

So, all in all I was very GLAD I used my monthly credit towards this audiobook. It was definitely worth it. And I’ll be the first one buying her next audible exclusive – if she’ll do another one that is.

4.5 stars!

Now this is what I’m talking about total KA heaven! I love this author I consider myself a big fan of hers. Though her last few releases haven’t been for me as soon as I read this blurb I knew I had to read it.

“Complicated” we start where our Mc Hixon and Greta just hooked up and it was a rough start because Hixon regrets it. BUT he has his reasons having just divorced his wife of 20 years he feels like his still dealing and doesn’t want to bring Greta, into his mess. Greta, of course feels hurt and confused by his attitude.

For me it helped so much that we got both MC pov, especially, Hixon’s since he was the one going through so much emotions. I don’t know, for me his pull and push wasn’t frustrating I actually sympathized with what he was going through. Being with someone for so long and they just blindside by a divorce with not much of an explanation?! it has to leave a man vulnerable for sure. He made mistake at first, but once he realized the his feelings for Greta were intensifying we get our usual KA OTT alpha male protective, and possessive.

Greta, I loved that she was understanding of Hixon situation but she was also strong and didn’t put up with Hixon’s BS. The murder mystery part of this story was an added bonus since it gives us more than just angst and drama to focus on.

Hope/Keith the dumbest book characters ever, but then again without your mistakes this story wouldn’t have been possible. So I thank you. Lol!

Well HOT DAMN this was good! I will keep this review short and sweet because as much as I LOVE AUDIO READS, it makes it difficult to highlight quotes or document the journey (which we all know how much I LOVE to do!)!

Complicated is exclusively available on Audible and when I stumbled upon this beauty I could not have been more excited to gorge on another delicious KA read!!!! And believe me when I say this read is a perfect blend of all the things we love about a Kristen Ashley read an alpha hero, a strong heroine, light action, suspense, and smoking hot passion!

Sheriff Hixon Drake is starting over after his 19-year marriage has ended. When he shares a one night stand with Greta Dare, a local hairstylist, the entire town is thrown into a tailspin as the scandal hits the gossip mill. Greta and Hixon share an immediate connection, and despite his ex-wife and the town shenanigans, Greta and Hixon find a way to discover their happily ever after. The journey is rocky with a small town murder, kids, and plenty of scandals and yet, as always, KA offers a beautiful romance with plenty of heart!

I highly recommend Complicated to all KA fans and contemporary romance fans. When it comes to KA, I will never get enough!!!!

Small town romances are my ultimate weakness. There’s something so irresistible about a powerful love story being set against the backdrop of a quaint little community in which everybody knows everybody, and its many intermingled lives rolling along so close to one another, that we get to know much more than just two of its residents. I love being able to imagine that love story continuing long after the novel ends, peaceful and simple in its ways, but unwavering in its strength, and more often than not, I find myself drawn like a moth to such settings. But when you add a carefully crafted, entirely character-driven tale of second chances to the mix—delivered in Kristen Ashley’s inimitable style—you’ve got me purring at every single word. In this book, Kristen Ashley returns to a more multi-layered plot progression reminiscent of some of her earlier works—with several subplots serving the central one—and to a softer, more thoughtful style of narrative where the characters’ identities are shaped by the relationships they build. This was an absolute treat for me, reminding me of all the reasons why I fell in love with this author’s extraordinary writing in the first place, and why her stories will never stop making me feel all the feels.

Like a lot of KA books, I struggled with the first part of the book. The hero always seem to be jerks in the beginning. The reason I keep reading them is all due to how the heroes transform when they go all in for the heroine. When that happens, they are the type of man I can’t get enough of.

Her heroes are not great at apologizing or groveling because they are too manly to do something like that, but once they love a woman, they're very protective and possessive with them. It's what truly makes it worth going through the jerky behavior for me as a reader.

There is ex-wife drama in this one but for the most part, I loved how Hixon handled it. I also love that for once the heroine had an ex that was a good guy. I hate when heroines always have loser ex’s when heroes always have models for ex’s. It levels the playing field.

I originally gave this book 4 stars but since I’m on my third re-read, I think I can officially say this is a favorite of mine and it deserves 5 stars. I guess I don’t mind this particular heroes jerky moments.

Audiobook review: One thing I think this author really excels at is choosing narrators for her books. I've found a lot of new favorite narraters because of Kristen Ashley. I highly recommend listening to Complicated on Audible.

5 Complicated Stars

Ok I am going to be totally Honest, I might be a little bias because I love most everything Kristen Ashley writes. Sometimes I have to read a book 1 time and love it sometimes 2 or more.

This was a 1 and done for me. I loved it. I love the relationship Hixon has with his kids, with the community. I just loved Hixon.

Greta has not had an easy life but she never lets it get her down not once. She does what needs to be done and she moves on. But when she met Hixon all bets were off.

The connection between these two is undeniable. And you root for them. It’s not easy and it take work. But the end justifies the means right?

I lllloved the narration. Erin Mallon is awesome! And Lance Greenfield does a fantastic job. I already know this is going to be a re-listen.

4 KA Givens Stars-SAY WHAT? NOW KINDLE UNLIMITED!!!

So this is an unadulterated look at why I read KA. There seems to be a need in me to read about everyday people who speak in a fashion that is very distinct to KA characters. Coming from other characters in other stories, I may not have the same willingness to accept it..but when starting a KA story... I know there will be this type of uttering, a mindset and I allow it.

I had loved her Burg and Colorado series. I learned how these people communicated and "got with the program." When KA did other types of writing, some worked for me and others were more of a stretch. Yet, almost always I gave each new series a look.

This brings me to Complicated.
This book has many of the standard quirks of KA .. meaning:

All characters have the same speech pattern and phrases
All the main men and women are seriously good in bed
And all the women seem to either be strong and willing to do for the Alpha they have found or have a thread of nasty and mean against the new love interest of the main Alpha.

Also, there will always be family surrounding this couple... who mostly will be children who are cool or cute...A strong BBF for our main gal...and a terrible conflict of some kind that will cause all kinds of messed-up pain for the couple to overcome.

This can be caused due to Main Guy Jumping to Conclusions and Not letting Others Speak...
Annoying but...I seem to be ok with all of this...(once I get over my rage)

Sometimes, KA gets carried away with descriptions of surroundings, clothing, etc. But mostly I am able to handle all of it; actually enjoy it because, with all of these specific things she does in her books, she weaves something more in every single one of them that I have read.

It is her ability to focus on her theme...somehow coming across with what her meaning is with each book... and in Complicated... I think it was figuring out the need to get over what has been thrown at you and then be open to what can surprise you...That there is a dream out there just waiting for you to grasp... that it is never too late and all of us desire them.

In this book, she tackles the pain of divorce... whether it is wanted or happens through no fault of your own. How devastating it can be and confusing in the way it can impact you. She also shows how hard it is to get rid of toxic people... but how it is necessary...

So with all of those ideas, KA does what she does best... She writes singular moments that resonate with all of us... things that can be said in a few sentences but mean so much...The recognition of when marriage and love are truly over...A moment between a father and son where the son displays the maturity and insight to reflect what he was shown by his dad...A time when a woman sees her future and knows it is right to fight for it...

There are many moments to experience and KA is good with all of those...

This had a couple of plot lines happening... and all of it ended with the usual strong last chapters sewing up all we love from KA books. This read gave me a bit of the KA fix I needed, however, her older books are still the KA Gold I love.

Woohooooooo! A new all time fav from KA!

I can’t express how much I ADORED and devoured every single word of this book! We get the best of Kristen Ashley, and I couldn’t have loved Hixon and Greta (plus all the incredible secondary characters!) more and they will be forever ingrained in my memory, as one of KA’s fav couples – only second to Ty and Lexie, which I worship, so that’s saying a lot – and I couldn’t get enough of this story, so much so I’d love even more Epilogue!

“Marriage is not a guessing game. It requires constant communication to keep it strong.”

“Oh yes.
I’d finally found it.
Something worth fighting for.
And if I had to, I was going to fight for it.
Because I was falling in love with complicated.”

Enrapturing plot, heart thumping love story, intriguing suspense, incredibly deep and complex characters and SO much EMOTION! I cried, I laughed, I sobbed and I bit my nails and sigh and swooned with these two and I couldn’t be any happier! And one of the thing I loved the most?! How even though we get a couple of KA’s brand of @sshole actions/words by the H, Hix very fast realizes his mistakes and apologizes! Yes, he does grovel and does it earnestly, and best of all, Greta is no doormat, and doesn’t fall immediately by his swoon worthy apologies and justifications! I ADORED that!

Complicated was so beyond everything I could have expected and dreamed of: KA perfection! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Whenever we get a new Kristen Ashley story I know what to expect. I've never been wrong so far and I've read more than half of her books. Admittedly, it can get boring but I'm not reading them back to back so it's always a treat when I finally get around reading another one.

I listened to the audiobook of this story and I have to say, while the male narrator was fabulous I wasn't a big fan of the female voice. It felt a bit over the top breathy, the voice acting wasn't natural. At 75% I rolled my eyes - mind you, I only listen to audiobooks in the car so it takes me quite a while to get through one. Based on that I'd give this book three stars, however, since I'm in for the story I didn't feel it was fair to go with a lower rating because of the narrators.

Hixon Drake is the usual alpha male but this time I was waiting for him to get his head out of his ass. He has just been divorced and after a one-night-stand, or what he thought it was, with Greta he just walked out like the jerk I was going to see for the first 30% of the book (and we know how long that can be in KA-terms). His was selfish, aggressive and an all around asshole towards Greta. I was shouting at my car stereo, he annoyed the hell out of me. I admit he has a lot to deal with, still. However, he got his shit together and was amazing after that so I finally fell in love with him. He was sweet with his kids and I liked that he saw through the crap his ex-wife spouted. He also cared a great deal about the people he served and had a lot of common sense.

Greta Dare is a strong sweet woman who hasn't had it easy in life. Her brother had a traumatic brain injury after their mother wrecked her car and even before that she'd been taking care of Andy. After her own divorce she works in a small town in Nebraska as a hair stylist and sings at a bar to earn some additional money.
When she meets Hix she feels that there is something special in the making...only to learn that it seemed one-sided when he walks out on her after their night together. And he walks out again on her after he meets Greta's mother. Without talking to her. Without even letting her talk and listening to her. Gah, I was mad on her behalf.
Anyhoo...
Greta showed some major backbone there and I gave her a mental high-five. The way she treated her brother with kindness, patience and sweetness totally won me over and I loved her for the way she was with Hix's kids.

Greta's mother was a piece of work and I hated her from the get-go, however, Hixon's children were wonderful - I especially loved Shaw. I would love to see his HEA. I also adored Greta's brother Andy, who was perfect with his broken mind and body.
What attracted me to this story was the age of the main characters. You don't get mature characters very often in popular books but KA has been known to do it and do it well.

Again, Kristen Ashley goes into elaborate detail about furniture or outfits at the most inappropriate times, killing the tension when she'd just started to build it up. I always get a little irritated when she does that. Her choice of pet names this time didn't really do it for me ether. Gumdrop? Snuggle Bug? Smokey? Eh.

Despite all my niggles though it is a cute engaging story. I have no idea how KA does it but I keep coming back for more. This book will be released as ebook and paperback in November. I will definitely read that one again and see if it makes a difference.

5 'At Last' Stars!


AAAAAND.. Kristen Ashley strikes again! I don’t know how this woman does it but she makes me fall in love with everything she writes. I’ve been waiting for this novel to release in eBook format (I know, I know it released a while ago in audiobook format but I still haven’t lost my audiobook virginity lol) and now I can say it surely was worth the wait!

Complicated is a standalone novel (for now) and it tells the love story between Hixon Drake and Greta Dare. Hixon is recently divorced, he is the sheriff and the father of three incredible children. The circumstances and the time in which he is living now make it very complicated to be in a relationship. His ex-wife is not having it either, but he and Greta cannot stop what they feel for each other. After many difficulties and even deceptions, they start a relationship that will change everything.

He knew no other way mostly because he’d have it no other way.
Until he had it another way.

This book reminds me so much of Kristen’s Burg series: it has a great storyline, a list of outstanding characters, lots of chemistry, drama and suspense. Complicated is what the title says: it is not easy for Hix and Greta to be happy together. Even though they start with what seems only sex, the connection these two have is impossible to stop. But obviously everything isn’t hearts and flowers: there are lots of complications in between.

“It’s too soon.”
“You’ve said that already.”
“I’m not in a place where I can know for sure I’d do right by you.”
“You’ve pretty much said that too.”
“But I’ve never had better.”

Both main characters are very loved by the town. But love does not come from everyone, especially not from Hope (Hixon’s ex-wife) and Greta’s fucked-up mother, and everything gets even more complicated when a murder gets in the mix. Yes, this new relationship is not easy. But is it worth it? Of course it is! Especially when these two take things seriously and they accept their feelings. Because what made Complicated even better? The whole relationship with the Drake family, obviously! Hix’s children are absolutely adorable and so beautiful (inside and out). They love seeing their father happy and all of them together gave me all the feels!

I’d finally found it.
Something worth fighting for.
And if I had to, I was going to fight for it.
Because I was falling in love with complicated.

And who also got me all melted and heart warmed? Hixon and Greta, of course! Even though they have their ups and downs, this couple is fantastic. Hixon is a strong hero, willing to fight with all that he has to find the truth and also to get what he wants: a life with Greta. Greta is also great, she hasn’t had the easiest past either but she is killing it as a singer/hairdresser, also fighting for her brother’s happiness and her own. These two are just wonderful together. And let’s not forget the chemistry! Boy, does Kristen Ashley know how to write the sexy stuff! And even better when it gets all melty with feels! Gah, this is such an amazing book!

I was going to get to swim in those eyes forever.

Therefore, my rating for Complicated is 5 STARS because this is KA, guys! I love everything this woman writes and this book was no exception! Hixon and Greta and the whole Drake family made me melt all over with this amazing story Kristen gave us! I do hope we get more stories with these characters because I loved them and I need more!!! So yeah, I am definitely recommending this one. Check out Complicated right now, guys!

KA books are guilty of a few things:

①- Being super long for contemporary romances

② - Having a lot of extraneous details about décor, clothing and hair.

③ - The midway break-up because the hero/heroine becomes a complete idiot for a minute over a misunderstanding that could have been cleared up easily with a conversation.

④ - Lots of side characters and random details about their lives.

⑤ - Some semi-cheesy language for nicknames, or using a song to convey some emotion or a combo of the two.

But you know what, it really doesn’t matter I get sucked in still. I will admit I sometimes skim the details about the kitchen and living room décor and anything about throw pillows but overall I get hooked into the story from beginning to end.

This is a small town story and I’m a bit of a sucker for those. You know the type one where everyone knows everyone else’s business and there don’t seem to be any secrets. Also it is a place where nothing bad ever really happens.

Hix is Sheriff in this little town and he has just made bit of a mistake, he went home with Greta had the night of his life and everyone is going to know about it. What is worse is that he is recently divorced and knows that she might be everything he wants in a woman but he isn’t ready, it’s too soon and he can’t deal.

Greta is great! While I was on the fence about Hix for about half of this book I loved Greta immediately. She is kind, funny and comes from a hard background. Her mom is a piece of work, just WOW. But her brother is really adorable and I you can’t help but love the sister who did everything she could to take care of her brother after an accident that left him in an assisted living home.

The one thing KA always does right for me are the kids in her books. They are kids and fun and add to the story instead of taking away from it. I like that many of her romances are with people in their late 30s and early 40s. Just because you aren’t 20 anymore doesn’t mean that the finding your true love portion of your life isn’t over.

There is a murder in this small town that rocks it. It is just part of Hix’s job but overall it really didn’t add much to the story other than seeing how good of a guy and cop he is. It is a little random and thrown in there but I guess that might be how murder in a small town would feel.

Overall this reminds me of her Burg series more than some of her other series. I enjoyed it and as always felt like about 100 pages should have been cut. But KA always makes the end worth the journey and has some of the best epilogues in the business.

Not my absolute favorite of hers but I hadn’t read a KA book for awhile and it was great to feel like I was coming home. She still remains one of my favorite guilty pleasures.

My adoration for Kristen Ashley's audiobooks truly knows no bounds. I own every single one and I listen to them repeatedly. There's nothing that brings more peace and contentment to this reader than revisiting my favorite KA stories as narrators bring them from page to life. With that said, I think an entirely different reading experience is granted through an audiobook, which is why I tend to read the book first and listen later. With Complicated releasing exclusively through Audible, it forced me to listen first, demanded I allow the narrators to draw me into the story and take me along for the ride. I was weary. I've always believed that the reader loses a bit of that connection when we listen versus when we read the story ourselves. But that wasn't the case with Complicated, to my surprise. I was lost. I was taken. I fell in love.

Complicated is classic Kristen Ashley, a story that feels familiar in the way her stories do, but with a refreshing storyline and characters I came to love. Hixon Drake is a recently divorced Nebraska sheriff and father of three whose one night stand with Greta Dare, a lounge singer and hairdresser, gets, well, complicated. With his ex-wife causing drama and a sudden spike in crime where it'd otherwise been virtually non-existent, Hix knows early on that no matter how amazing their night was together, they can't afford to complicate their lives by taking things any further. But true to form, Kristen Ashley has other plans for these characters, forcing them together under messy, dangerous circumstances, and I could do nothing but sit back, relax and listen to it all unfold.

Like many of Ashley's storylines, Complicated follows a blooming romance amidst a criminal investigation. It's no secret I'm a romance reader and as such, in any book, I tend to prefer the romantic element of a book over a suspenseful one. But I have to say, I was just as intrigued by Sheriff Drake's search for a killer as I was with his attraction to Greta. I was just as absorbed in the manhunt, in the evidence, in the operation of the investigation, in the heartbreak of such a horrifying small town crime, as I was in the slow, sensual romance between these characters. And I think that had everything to do with the narration of the story, the state of everyone involved truly highlighted by the emotional tone granted by the audio. The voices Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon gave to each character in this story was spot on, often causing an intense visceral reaction to every facet of this plot.

Reminiscent of many of my favorite books from this author, Hix and Greta's story took me back to the Colorado Mountain series and The Burg series, but with a smaller town feel. The more I read, the more I fell in love. I can't say the chemistry between Greta and Hix was quite as explosive or quite as memorable as, say, Ty and Lexi or Tack and Red or Joe and Violet (I mean, is that even possible?) But Hix and Greta share a beautiful romance all their own that is sweet and sexy and truly embodies why I read this author. There's certain elements a Rock Chick hopes to find in a KA novel and Complicated has EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Characters who, after having believed their lives would play out a certain way, find themselves starting over again. An alpha law enforcement officer with an ex whose drama won't quit, leaving their kids caught in the middle. A woman with a past of her own who finds herself in bed with a hot uniformed officer of the law, and the messy, addictive romance that ensues when obstacles threaten their happiness at every turn. A small town of mostly small minded people who like to gossip and meddle but who come together and remind each other how important having a sense of community truly is, especially in times of heartache and danger.  Complicated is a comfort read. It's exactly the kind of book we all think of when we need Kristen Ashley to recharge our reading batteries. This story is quintessential KA, a story that feels good just to get lost in the pages, in her words, in the kind of characters only she knows how to deliver. 

While I initially thought I'd struggle to connect with this story as a reader who prefers to rely on audiobooks strictly for rereads, Complicated proved to be an exception to the rule, holding me captive with a riveting murder mystery, a sensual romance, and relentless familial drama. Complicated perfectly exemplifies exactly why I return to Kristen Ashley over and over. It feels comforting and familiar, this story, but refreshing and new all at once. The narration in this storyline was perfect, superbly capturing the voice of these characters and their array of emotions amidst the most intense circumstances, gripping me in a storyline I couldn't get enough of. I needed a KA fix and Complicated satisfied every craving. I thoroughly enjoyed this storyline and I'm thrilled to add it to my collection of Kristen Ashley audiobooks. Hix and Greta's story is deliciously sexy, blissfully romantic, and undeniably complicated. The narrators brought this story to life beautifully. I was hooked! Greta and Hix's romance is one I'll want to revisit again and again.

loved both Hix (H) and Greta (h) and their beautifully sweet romance, but I think my fave character was Shaw (Hix's son). I held on to every word whenever he'd appear and I feel like he'd be an amazing alpha hero - if he had his own book. I wasn't that interested in the whodunit story line tbh and found myself skimming most of it cause I was mainly there for the romance and Hix's kids lmaoo.

So very Kristen Ashley.

KA didn’t take her time having the hero act like a big fat jerk. The minute he has sex he says, “Thanks,” pulls up his drawers and beats feet. Pretty unusual.. except there was Tank in Motorcycle Man, Brock in Wild Man, Three Wishes, and then there was Hector tooling poor Sophie in Rock Chick Regret, and ...well never mind.

Hixon is by no means the worst KA hero, and he is does try and make it up to Greta although he blows it not once, but twice. In time honored KA heroine, she takes him back with minimal effort. She has her hands full with a brother with brain damage, the WORST mother - THE WORST EVER, a stalker, a broken nose, and an ex that is still besotted with her.

The H has a studly alpha job (Sheriff), three great kids who don’t hate the h, and an ex-wife that is not the most evil ex in KA-ville, but definitely the most stupid.

She and the H were high school sweethearts and happily married when she asks for a divorce. Why? He inherited about $25,000, and she wanted him to spend it by buying her a $20,ooo ring. He, stupid, shallow man, laughs and plans on spending it on something trivial like his kids’ college educations. She doesn’t even tell him why they are divorcing just mutters, You know!. She regrets the divorce the minute he signs, and is annoyingly and entertainingly in the way of true romance.

This is a little more disjointed than usual and with the questionable conversational skills that KA’s heroes have. Had to read some sentences more than once. Minimal chin lifting.

If you like Kristen Ashley, you will like this, if you don’t…then move along. Diana Palmer is waiting with one of her hairy Texas charmers.

Really enjoyed my re-read/listen and feel a wee bit emotionally wrung out. Loved the family dynamics once the dead weights were removed. Nice to revisit Kristen Ashley's Complicated world.

Learning to love complications.

What a journey!! Of course, it was supposed to last longer for me but how was I supposed to keep my listening pleasure to just my journeys to and from work? Obviously, when it’s a Kristen Ashley, it is impossible. So, in less than a week I have listened to 18 hours of KA goodness. A couple of trips to and from work, two baking sessions (come on…my kids love cookies) and listening while my son was at baseball training (...and ignoring all the parents). I may have baked a wee more than usual and was a little ruder and standoffish than I am normally...but it's KA!! Like I said, who could blame me? A new KA, made for audio and a new Alpha male to check out…of course I made more time.

I started Complicated and admit that I got a little thrill. It was kind of weird (well, weirder than normal). The thrill wasn’t necessarily that it was a KA, it was more to do with the fact that our hero stuffed up…BIG TIME!! Yes, I know that's strange, but there’s this little part of me that gets a kick out of seeing the big lug head stuff up, learn that he stuffed up and then suck up to get back in. Well, ladies and gentleman, Hixon Drake stuffed up, sucked up, stuffed up again, and then finally got his head screwed on and became a KA hero to make me swoon.

Hixon has just signed the papers to finalise his divorce with the woman he was married to for 19 years. He loved her and even after 12 months of separation, he’s still unsure where it all went wrong. We start Complicated with him moving on for the first time after the divorce…and…it’s pretty bloody obvious that he wasn’t as ready to move on as he thought he was.

Greta is a hairdresser by day and a part-time singer at night. She’s been divorced for a little while now and when she connects with Hixon Drake, she mistakenly thinks that it is more than physical attraction. That lesson was a tough one to face when he wham-bam, thank you Maám’s her, but she’s faced a lot of heartache and pain in her 38 years, she’s kind of used to it. Unfortunately, for a small town in Nebraska, it’s big news for the newly divorced Sheriff to sneak out of the local hairdresser's house in the middle of the night. Greta won’t be able to lick her wounds in private because everyone knows about it.

Hixon and Greta’s love story is not an easy one. In typical KA fashion, there are ups and downs, with sideswipes in-between. I admit, there were a few tears shed on the train as we see them come to blows, face blows from outside forces, and witness blows that shake the town.

Both Greta and Hixon have past loving relationships that went wrong and in some ways, their war wounds help them to move on together.

Greta’s mum is an evil woman that had me squinting and scowling more than once and Hixon’s ex is a piece of work for more than half of the story. While both have burdens to bear with their ugly relationships, they also have magic in the form of Greta’s brother Andy and Hixon’s wonderful kids.

Complicated is set in a small town where everyone knows your name. I loved the setting of the story. It’s a mostly peaceful town that is rocked by the murder of a much-loved husband and father. Tracking down the murderer is the top priority for Hixon and his deputies.

Poor Hixon, scraping off the old love, starting a new love, keeping the peace with his kids, dealing with his new loves psycho mum and finding a killer…only a KA Alpha can handle that. Greta, well she’s got to get a new man up to scratch, steer clear of his ex, deal with her psycho mum, work, and make time for her brother who suffered a head trauma when he was a teenager…only a KA sweet and slightly quirky heroine can handle that.

I loved Complicated and couldn’t stop listening. Yes, I found the male narrator’s female voice funny, but find me a male narrator doing a female voice well, and I’ll eat my hat. The female narrator has a sweet voice. I never struggled to identify when the characters changed and found their voices clear and easy to listen to. I will admit that it took a little more concentration than normal because I normally reserve my audio’s for re-reads. Obviously, as this is an audio exclusive, I haven’t read the story beforehand and couldn’t be distracted. A couple of times I had to rewind to make sure I hadn't missed important information, as life tried to distract me from my KA fix.

It’s KA, so of course, I’m a little bias, but if you like audio, enjoy a love story with an older, more experienced couple and enjoy the small town setting, this could be right up your alley. For me, I was in KA heaven.

I always get a bit excited when KA comes out with a new book. Especially her recent ones since they are reminders of her earlier work. Her books are a comfort read for me. When I pop one of her books open I know to get my favorite blanket and pillow and snuggle down cause I'm going to be lost to the real world for quite some time. Oh, and I have to grab drinks and snacks because I'll forget to eat. LOL

Complicated was exactly that, complicated. Hixon Drake liked to make it that way. He's the sheriff of the small town and is a recently divorced with 3 kids. He didn't want to be divorced and isn't quite sure of his wife's reasons since she never gave a clear understanding of why. He had hopes that she would change her mind and that they could put their family back together. That didn't happen and it's been three weeks since the ink has dried on their divorce papers when he meets Greta Dare. Greta Dare is a hair stylist and a singer at the Dew Point on the weekends. That is where they meet. He's there for a drink but see's her and hears her voice and they talk for awhile and sparks fly. They go home together. But in the morning things become to real for Hixon and he decides this is a complication he doesn't need so soon after his divorce. He zips up and leaves like a complete dick. He has quite a few of these moments in the book. Greta has no time for his dickish ways. She has her own complications with a crazy mother who has made her life hell and a brother in a in-home care facility that she absolutely loves and adores that she has spent the majority of her young teen and all her adult years taking care of. She's the guardian of her younger brother, Andy. He stole the whole show ladies and gents and he absolutely stole my heart. The reasons why he's in a home is heart shattering. He's one of those characters you wish were real so you could meet them and share some of that light that shines through them. He's a special character and one no one will come away from this book not loving.
The chemistry between Greta and Hixon is undeniable and the pull is too strong for either of them to ignore even if the timing is awful. They can't help but keep being drawn back to one another. The fight to stay apart doesn't last long and soon they are working on trying to untangle all their complications so they can have their HEA.

If your a fan of her Burg's and Magdalene series you are for sure going to enjoy this book.

4 1/2 Stars - You recognize it all as the usual KA romance stuff but I loved every minute anyway

... With a promising blurb, a bit older main characters (my favorite setting) and some pretty good early ARC reviews.

Yay, and a wonderful listening it was!

Complicated is most of all quite simple everyday romance drama:

• Adult people who left long relationships. Grownups who get a little surprised by all strong feelings they suddenly feel for "a stranger" once again.

• Adult people who next to actually know what they want. Still sexy good looking men and women which appreciate very intense sex (in just enough pages, not too much, and very well steamy feeling described here).

• Adult people like Greta and Hix with some difficult old relationships to struggle with (life is never ever easy).

• Not exactly surprising, read, seen and experienced many times - a bunch of unbelievable smart and sweet teen children (his). We get a super cute brother (hers) and a unbelievable disgusting parent (Greta's trashy mother).

• Also (of course in a long winded KA book) some nice friends to truly envy, terrific coworkers, a tiny bit (crime case) suspense and above all; well-written and great described small town life.

Yay, I truly got all as I like it!

Highly romantic hot steam, big HEA love, tender moments, words words words and some heartbreaking and very good rememberable dialogue time. — Ahh, simply so much enjoying thoughtful KA stuff to happydance about. I listened with a happy smile in my face all those eighteen (18 hours is a lot of time to find) audiobook hours. KA is without doubts this CR genres great master.

Sincerely recommended if you like me enjoy listening to terrific (him and her) narrated slow burn audiobook romances.

I LIKE - the feel of safety with traditional solid good Kristen Ashley story stuff

Sheriff Hixon Drake was happily married (or so he thought) for 19 years until his wife inexplicably kicked him out and they divorced a year later. They live in a small town so everyone knows everybody’s business, even what you don’t know about your own. When just a few days after the divorce was final he wakes from a night of passion with Greta Dare, a lounge singer he’s oddly attracted to, Hix flees but it’s too late to avoid town gossip.

As one of my friends aptly stated, you either love Kristen Ashley stories or you can’t abide her alpha males. I haven’t a clue as to why I love listening to her books and have given up trying to figure it out. I’m just plain addicted to them.

Hix is basically a good man, was a good husband and is a great father to his three teenaged children. He makes some really big mistakes with Greta who I really, really liked, even when her spine turned to elastic from time to time. I loved how her relationship developed with Hix and how he managed it all with his kids and a spoiled, entitled ex-wife. The small-town dynamics were a lot of fun and the murder mystery added an element of suspense that elevated the story.

Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon delivered a wonderful performance, despite Greenfield’s odd voice for Greta because he nailed Hix. Their pacing was good and together they made the story better.

This is a standalone but I wouldn’t mind revisiting these characters and the town. I enjoyed pretty much everything about it and hated when it was over.

3.5 Refried KA Stars

Can’t believe I’m saying this cause it’s been awhile, but I actually enjoyed this one. Yes it was very reminiscent of The Burg series and it’s typical KA, but somehow a couple of hours into the audio, the story and characters started to grow on me. I don’t have any serious emotions about the story, but the epilogue was beautiful (of course) and it feels to good finally enjoy a book by one of your fave authors.
