We are now experiencing one of the most significant ― but not yet fully understood ― revolutions in human the dramatic rise in life expectancy. This revolution does not imply, as most people usually think, that we’ve simply got more years of old age. Rather, it implies the formation of a new period in human the Age of Wisdom. When Dr Zvi Lanir reached retirement age, he was ready to admit that he was no longer young, but he did not feel old at all. The Wisdom Years is the product of Lanir investigating this ‘hidden age’ and finding out how to make the most of it. People who are able to prepare themselves for this new age will be able to enjoy an active, wise and satisfying stage of life, which will enable them to delay their ‘old age’ to the very end of their life. The Wisdom Years provides a practical, thought-provoking and life-changing read for both people embarking on retirement and younger people who would like to mindfully prepare themselves in advance. Derived from Dr Lanir’s lifetime of work experience in identifying mindsets that are no longer helpful, it reveals how to reframe our thought processes so that we can live life based on our ‘functional age’ rather than our ‘chronological age’. The result is a book that carries a unique and inspiring life after retirement is to be enjoyed as a new, exciting and uplifting journey of personal evolution.
Zvi Lanir (צבי לניר) (born October 10, 1936 ) is the founder and president of the Praxis Company and a developer of "The Basic Surprise" theory and its implications for combining thinking and management strategies and author of The Reason of Reason for Late Maturity in Human Life.
Zvi Lanir was born and raised in Haifa and is a graduate of Halutz High School . The military service began as a member of Nahal Nuclear and was sent to the Nuclear Training Corps and then to the Officers Course. He held various commanding positions in combat units and, after completing his position as a company commander in the Golani Brigade , was sent by the IDF for academic studies. After completing his bachelor's degree in political science, economics and sociology at Tel Aviv University, he moved to the Intelligence Corps and served in a number of positions where he was much involved in the theory of Intelligence and under the guidance of intelligence officers, during which he also completed his Master's degree in Military History at Tel Aviv University.
Zvi Lanir's book really resonated with me in that I'm 65 years old but don't feel 'old' per se despite how society views those of us aging in these times of longer longevity. I feel I will need to read it a couple times more for it all to sink in but feel sure that some if not all is achievable. Who doesn't want the tools to cope well physically, mentally and emotionally as we enter this new stage in our live?
Lanier's book The Wisdom Years is well based on broad scientific pieces of evidence. Still, he avoids presenting them in a detached academic language. It is an easily readable book. You won't want to put the book down till its end. However, then you will return to the book again and again to recall its wisdom that will guide you in your advanced age personal life journey.
A small but wise informative book on living in your retirement ‘old age’ to the upmost of your potential by identifying mindsets and thought processes that influence us to live our declining chronological age and not our functional age (the age that you feel inside yourself) which if healthy is usually years younger than your chronological age.
