Murderous spirits. A shadowy realm of discarded magic. More corpses than Kate Finch knows what to do with.
No one said being a sorcerer’s apprentice would be easy.
Kate Finch keeps her promises. Even the ill-advised ones—like her promise to rescue the woman from the rebellious Rattlesnake Society who once pointed a pistol at her head. Or her agreement to help Grayson Whitelocke lay to rest the rumors about his late brother’s crypt.
Yet nothing she does escapes the notice of the mysterious demon communicating to her through a magic device. Taunting her, threatening her.
When each unrelated promise leads her back to the alarming magic rising in the forests and vales around Salem, Kate’s loyalty faces the ultimate test. Her mentor August Swaine expects her to keep her focus on her studies—mastering the spells, wards, and glamours to help with his grand experiment. Not get involved with someone else’s problems.
Soon enough, Kate’s secrets and promises unravel. Swaine’s work grows brash, forcing her to confront a reckoning beyond any promises or vows she’s made.
What’s his real goal? Will her wit, daring, and desperation be enough to fit together all the pieces of the puzzle? Or has the secretive demon been right all along—she’s no match for the netherworld of terror about to explode into the countryside?
The twists keep coming in this fast-paced second book of the bewitching new fantasy trilogy, The Books of Conjury.
Kevan Dale grew up in a Massachusetts home full of books, next to a winding patch of woods full of stories (in his already vivid imagination). Books and stories eventually pointed him to a degree in English. That degree in English inspired him to pursue a career as a professional guitar maker (long story.) A decade of luthiery led to a second career, this time in video games (another long story) where he remains. It all made sense at the time, honestly.
Throughout all, books and stories. History, fantasy, horror. All of them tug at his imagination, and he happily follows.
Kevan is once again in Massachusetts, glad to live in his own home full of books, next to a winding patch of woods full of stories.
Well, talk about opening the gates of Hell! This may not be the fastest paced series of supernatural happenings out there, but it's certainly one of the most involved. I could go into all the cliches about playing with fire etc but I think you get the gist. As Finch tries her best to continue her studies and find out more about her abilities she is sucked ever deeper down into the mire of darkness surrounding Salem and Boston's dark past. Her friends become more endangered by the minute and loved ones start to perish - again. As the planes become active, you will wonder whether up is down and how she will escape, as well as if she should trust those closest to her, and if the power of her Witchcraft and August's Sorcery will be enough to keep the world from imploding. The ending of this throws you straight into the next book, so I'm really happy that I bought the trilogy in one go. A superb read!
Quite a wonderful cast of characters wreak mayhem, keep dark secrets, seek the company of books, and put their feet in their mouths in this well-written, beautifully paced trilogy.
Protagonist is well defined and seem to learn with the progression of the story which is highly satisfying. The details are very engrossing and provide and excellent background without being distracting. Highly recommend reading!
I’m really delighted to have run into this series. This second book continues from the first with questions answered and even more questions posed. The set up for the last book is fantastic.
