This book is for you if… juvenile dragon adventures with more bite than Paolini's Eragon but less excitement and thrill than a Rothfuss with a pinch of How to Train Your Dragon are your kink.

Overall.
I definitely expected a wild adventure from this audiobook - which, in all honesty, I didn't get. The narration was okay, but I had to look up the actual spelling of the names quite a lot because the pronunciation of the narrator didn't quite fit the medieval image I had of the universe.

Characters you laugh with and about. Just my favourite thing in this regard. It was a joy to see Tor grow from a somewhat sexist, self-centred little prick into a decent person who sees to his responsibilities. In general, the characters were diverse and coloured in well. My favourite was the dragon, obviously, which I pictured as a crossover between Saphira from the Eragon series and Toothless.

World(-building). That sorta worked out well, probably because the cover contributed to it a great deal.

The arch of suspense. Yeah, not so much in the beginning, okay at best. Overall just short of boring, yet entertaining enough so I kept to it, which paid off I guess?. The episode form made for many opportunities to keep me on the edge of my seat.

What’s happening.
‘In life, you are only guaranteed one thing: adventure.’

How much of an adventure his life would become, though, Tor didn't even dare to dream. After wrongfully trusting a dragon rider to take him to dragon school, Tor's life - plagued by hunger and cruelty - takes a drastic turn: he is now the sole executioner of a wild rescue mission, his companion a femal dragon with all the sass.

Con:
dragon doesn't tolerate bad manners
way more clueless than comfortable to admit
hunted by the enemy 24/7
Pro:
daily dose of sass at courtesy of saboraak, chameleon dragon
sowly able to check in with own emotions
heckin' awesome allies/i>

ROGUE’s QUEST:
Eighteen-year-old Tor Winespring has suffered through war and starvation, now doubting the promise of the purple dragon rider named Hubric to return for him, a promise which would have lifted him to the skies! The city has been left in terrible condition with no food, other than rats for the stew, and no shelter since it had all been burned to the ground. As he talked with Badge, he felt someone staring at him but didn’t see anyone. Tor thought the survivors had put too much hope in Ephretti Oakboon. She and her Great Green Dragon had saved them all. Now she had written for help for them, to avoid starvation, but no one even knew if her letter had been read.

Tor’s dreams of becoming a Dragon Rider at the Dragon School seemed further and further away. At least until the huge purple dragon Kyrowat landed in the courtyard. His rider Hubric said he needed to deliver a message to Ephretti and then they would take off. As Tor waited outside while Hubric delivered his message, he thought he again saw a man with a swirl of light in his eyes as he had seen earlier when he was with Badge. But the man disappeared. Then he heard a voice in his head! Kyrowat was mentally talking to him to remind him to go get his things! They would leave in an hour.

Tor would not exactly be going to Dragon School, but Hubric recruits him for a special dangerous mission. He is introduced to Saboraak, a female chameleon dragon, both of them inexperienced and being paired together to learn from each other.

Saboraak can speak with humans mentally, and she is determined to civilize Tor. The banter between the two of them is delightful! Tor decides that his job is to help her find a sense of humor! Their adventure beings, much more than he had anticipated. He will be called on to become something he hadn’t thought he could ever be -- a hero.

The narrator, Sean Rhead, did a really nice job with the audiobook version of this book, bringing out the emotions and holding the reader’s full attention. I am only reviewing the first part to give you an idea of what the stories are like – as you’ll find out, really exciting! The characters are wonderful, the pacing is fast and exhilarating, and the author’s descriptions are so well done that you will have the sense of being there experiencing it all first-hand! Grab your copy and immerse yourself in this fantastic world of dragons! You won’t believe how exciting it really is to ride a dragon!

I like to think of this as a dragon mission on steroids! I enjoyed the story and the premise of it and I liked the MC. I liked the monologue between the rider and dragon. Their shenanigans were great and had me laughing. At times I felt like the MC whined a lot and it became a bit annoying.
I listened to the audiobook and unfortunately I didn’t like his voice. It was a too nasally for me. He did a great job narrating the story though.

Summary:
Tor sees himself as anything except a hero. He lives in a city destroyed in a war where his only chance getting out is to go to Dragon Rider school if Hubric, a Dragon Rider, ever returns. When things look the worse for Tor, Hubric arrives saving Tor, but plans have changed giving Tor his chance, but only if he binds himself to Hubric as his apprentice and to an unknown dragon Saboraak. Taking a leap of faith binds Tor and Saboraak’s lives and fates together as their new life begins. Their adventure takes them on a perilous journey where magic and danger abound, but where it will end who knows. Tor may learn that a being a hero isn’t what he thinks.

This was a wild ride form the very beginning and where it will lead the reader is yet unknown. I will be waiting to see how it all ends up. The story was brought to life through the narration of Sean Rhead.

A lovely series!!!

I reviewed each book separately, I’ll recap each one here.

1. I really liked it. I hadn’t even read one page and already I was fully captivated. I read the Dragon School series and this is set in that world. I don’t think this stands alone though. Better to read the Dragon School series first, to fully understand this world of dragons and Magikas etc. I did very much like the dry, honest sense of humor Saboraak (the Chameleon Dragon) has. It was adventurous, fast-paced, and entertaining!

2. Saboraak’s the best! Tor is independent and confident, although when it comes to girls and emotions: not so much. Soft-hearted Saboraak is the one I liked best. Together with Bataar, Zyla and Zin they embark on an adventure. Fast-paced and exciting, this story was well worth my time. I liked the constant bickering between Tor and Saboraak.

3. An amazing dragon-ride! I loved it! Lovelovelove! I loved the telepathic conversations between Tor and his dragon Saboraak. And…was that…COMPASSION Tor felt for Zin? My my, the boy is learning! He’s softening up and I lllllllllike it! He’s starting to like his dragon and I’m connecting too. He’s starting to feel responsible for his dragon and his new friends and that’s new for him!

4. Skies and Stars! That was a.m.a.z.i.n.g! There were some moments of horror. Those people with the silver swirls in their eyes - they freak Tor out, and they freak me out! It was crazy suspenseful, crazy full stop. It was everything I could possibly want in a YA fantasy. The way Tor and Saboraak communicate is so full of dry humor! Saboraak is learning sarcasm! So funny. Amazing amazing amazing!

Absolutely brilliant start to this follow up series. I loved the character of Tor, an unlikely hero and Saboraak, the Chameleon dragon. The form an interesting partnership to say the least. But they somehow feel a good match. Hubric is involved and this has the promise of another exciting adventure.
Sorry but this is twenty to one in the morning but I couldn’t wait to review. Awesome story.

That was my review for book 1. The series got better with each book, so to have books 1 to 4 together is a real treat.

A riveting story!

The author says "Heroes come from unexpected places" , she is so right! In this series we follow Tor, a charismatic, street wise, con-artist. His task, to find out what is threatening the Dominion. With Soboraak , the chameleon dragon, their adventure begins. These books are so well crafted with wonderful and unique characters, I was irresistibly drawn in from page one. So exciting with page turning action and danger I could not stop reading. The author continues to delight and entertain with her dragon and rider stories. I highly recommend this box-set!

Simply Wonderful

This is the second series I’ve read set in a world of dragons, magic, characters with depth, and edge of your seat storylines. I become very invested in Ms. Wilson’s deftly woven tales.

I enjoy the fact that yes, there is romance - but nothing graphic. Safe for young adult reading or even a mature younger reader (I read every spare moment in my youth, absorbing works not normally tackled by 1st graders…)

Oh! If you have never used the highlight function, you might want to learn - I’ve saved so many quotes by this author!

On to the next episodes!!! Enjoy!

The Main Character is a Street rouge who though he will deny it is a softy at heart. He with the others he slowly accumulates get into more and more Trouble & Mischief. He seems to have funominol luck and comes through scrapes and near death outcomes barely surviving.
Male Narrator is good, but the female voicing is to masculine to really come across as a Female so disruptive to flow of story. This is a Audible book 1-4 and I can not wait to start the next batch!!

Tor is great as an unwilling and unwitting hero. But fate intends to make him one despite himself.

From a performance standpoint, all of the male parts came across well for me. The female voices not so much.

Serials are a bit of a challenge for me. I enjoyed having these together in the omnibus. I just wish there had been more as I am likely to forget many of the details before I have the opportunity to continue.

Amazing story

It has been four months since I completed the dragon school series and I have struggled with interruptions and problems with my ereader.
Yesterday I worked thru the problems and started episode 1 of dragon chameleon...and haven't stopped till I finished episodes 2, 3, and 3.
I love the heroes and world that is written. It kept pulling me forward thru the tale.
Now I need some sleep before I start the next collection.

I had covid as I read this book. So I am not sure this is an accurate review🤔. I grew very frustrated with the main character Tor stating I am not a hero. It’s okay to mention it a few times, but this was the driving theme for this character. It was very annoying.

I love the new dragon and that she was female. This introduced me to a whole new aspect of dragons! This was an amazing new addition.

The start of another great series. Went through this nonstop and immediately started on Book 2. The main character is one we met in the Dragon School series. Tor started off being a little more abrasive and difficult than I remembered him from earlier but, no worries, he has developed nicely. Good development of the main characters. Lots of action. Bad guys are definitely bad. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this series and enjoyed the characters mostly. The main character whines a lot throughout the story and it does get tedious over time. She is also a little naive and the author repeats information over and over again. I enjoyed the plot and how it developed overall and will read the next in the set.

Dragon Chameleon takes the reader on an exciting adventure. The pages of this tale are rich with imagination. The author has wonderful world building skills. Possessing the ability to almost magically bring the story to life with her descriptive language. I could definitely see sharing this story with my child when older. I can’t wait to listen to more.

Tor!

That rebellious and deceptive thief from The Dragon School saga is back, and it’s his turn to be in the spotlight, even if he doesn’t want to be! All he wants is a warm meal, a soft bed, and of course, a dragon to ride! But wishes, wants and needs are edged by Destiney and Tor has a role to play.

Great story of a young swindler thrust into a heroic role

Author Wilson continues on from here Dragon School Books with new stories from the same world. The unwitting hero Tor gets involved with Hubric, who sets him on mission with a dragon. There’s always adventure, mystery, and dragon personality! Love a clean story. When it’s this good, you don’t need anything else.

Dragon Chameleon: Episodes 1-4

This was more tense than Dragon School was. The hero's thoughts and actions were very complex and mixed up between scorn and swaggering. But h did his best, stumbling into danger and being hauled back out.

Entertaining quick read. Felt like plot was held together by adolescent dialog and dumb luck.

On a scale of “wishing I had my time back” to “life changing” it was “worth the read time for entertainment”.
