Raise the Song: A Classical Christian Guide to Music Education

Rate this book
With technology, music has never been more constant. It is heard on phones and in waiting rooms, in coffee shops and on television. Despite such exposure, the number of people able to make music for themselves is dwindling. Classical Christian schools have a unique motivation to remedy this. Building a musically literate culture is foundational for the cultivation of beauty and the worship of God. Where better to start a generational overhaul than with classrooms full of our littlest worshipers?

The options for music training are many, but not equal. This book is designed to help the school administrator or music teacher sift through the pile and emerge with a vision and tools for building a flourishing classical Christian music program.

Recently reread most of this. A must read for classical Christian Ed! The first chapter by Steve Turley is worth the cost of the book. And Kent Young’s chapter about harmony/sin, singing in the cracks, and how singing (to memorize) the psalms teaches students how to respond to different trials is so encouraging and motivating.

I believe that this book had some excellent insight and guidance on how to achieve a successful Christian music program. It was an interesting perspective of how to rework the view of music in God’s eyes. I definitely am now planning on pursuing my Kodály certification and have new resources for my classroom!

True Music Literacy is Needed Everywhere

This short book is aimed at Classical Christian school administrators and music teachers, but it should be read by every adult who believes he has been cheated by his musical educators. Every “Praise and Worship” leader should read it too.
