The sixth book in the Rose Gardner Investigations series.
For months, Rose has suspected her ex-brother-in-law, has a foot in the criminal world, and she’s equally sure her deceased sister had the evidence to prove it—evidence stolen days just days after Violet’s death.
Those suspicions turn concrete when a body shows up at the construction site Mike works at, and the concrete cracks open wide when her niece and nephew go missing.
Rose might be weeks away from delivering her own baby, but that doesn’t stop her and her best friend, Neely Kate, from looking for the kids. She needs answers and fast, but her search leads her to the man who betrayed her months ago… the father of her baby.
James “Skeeter” Malcolm has been playing games with her for months—refusing to relinquish her paternity but refusing to tell her why. James knows what Mike is up to—Rose is sure of it—but can she convince him to tell help before it’s too late?
Wow. I am completely blown away. This book hit me way harder than I ever imagined. I seriously felt it in my soul.
I read half the book on the edge of my seat with my hand covering my mouth. My chest ached. I was covered in goosebumps. I laughed out loud, snorted even. I cried so many times. Tears of happiness, tears of sadness, tears of relief. I'm somehow so upset, yet so happy with how things are turning out.
I want to buy two copies of this book immediately. One to get signed and put on a shelf to look pretty. And one to get signed and carry it everywhere with me like a toddler with a well loved security blanket. I'm not even joking, my husband is going to think I'm insane but I'm doing it.
I've never been able to claim a favorite book. Too many to choose from. But this book...This book is it for me. I have loved Rose for a long time and it breaks my heart that her story will probably be ending soon. But she deserves her happiness.
I was immediately captivated with “When the Bough Breaks”. This is the sixth book in the Rose Gardner Investigation series and it is my favorite one so far. The author does a fantastic job reeling the reader in and feeling the same emotions as the main character. You feel for the characters, and you want what’s best for them. I loved seeing Rose grow in this book. Her character has developed a lot and I absolutely love the woman she is becoming. She is such an incredible character and one that readers could relate to or inspire to live like Rose. Y’all, I absolutely loved this book. I ugly cried so many times. The good, the bad..I loved it all. It is such a fast paced book that it was truly hard to put this book down. So set some time aside where you can read this book in one sitting. Trust me, you won’t want to put the book down!! It is epic. Looking forward to, “It All Falls Down”.
Rose is two weeks away from delivering her baby but there is no time for her to kick back with her swollen feet up. Her niece and nephew, Ashley and Mikey, are missing and no one seems to notice but Rose. It's time for her and Neely Kate to put their investigation skills to work again and that means getting themselves in hilarious predicaments like always.
There are sweet and tender moments and sad and heart wrenching moments in her love life. We have all been waiting with baited breath to see who Rose will end up with and who she will ultimately choose to be the father of her child. All three of her past lovers make appearances answering some questions and spurring new questions.
Rose's reunites with an old friend from the crime world that works by her side to find Ashley and Mikey, but there are plenty of old criminals that are out to get her so there is no shortage of danger and risky situations she waddles through.
Finally we experience the unpredictable birth of Rose's baby. We find out the name of the baby and the meaning behind it. We also finally get to learn which man Rose chooses to spend her life with. These are the things every Rose fan has been waiting and hoping for. It may not be the ending you desire, but that's part of the draw of Denise Grover Swanks writing. You never know what is going to happen and she makes it thrilling to the last minute.
This is a roller coaster of a ride and you will not be disappointed in the ending, unless....
Those that have been following this series, and have been waiting for this particular installment, are in for an intense ride! So much happens you might find yourself staying up till 4am like me as you just won’t be able to put it down!
Rose is now thirty-eight weeks pregnant and could delivery her baby any day. She has gone into nesting mode and wants everything tied up nicely before her little treasure is born. But in true Rose Gardner fashion, it’s not as simple as abc. Her niece and nephew, Violet’s kids, go missing and Rose enlists all her friends to help her find them. She is hormonal, emotional and exhausted but she won’t give up until they are safe. Mason, whom I adore, also comes to help Rose and they brainstorm out at the farm, trying to put the pieces together. This bought happy memories for me, and glad they are in a good place now. There is still the dilemma of the Hardshaw group and if they have anything to do with the bodies Joe is investigating.
Within her own personal life, Rose makes some definitive decisions on where she wants to take her life going forward. She wants stability and a loving home to raise her child, like the rest of us. Her business is still thriving with Bruce Wayne busy with the landscaping side and Neely Kate and Maeve looking after the nursery store. I got a good sense that things are falling into place for Rose and I’m excited for her. I’m not sure how many more books are to come from this series, but if it was to end soon, I’m happy with the outcomes so far. Fans of this series will not want to miss this episode and they will be hooked till the very last word.
Where do I begin? My feelings. They’re all over the place currently. Happy, sad, heart ache, joy. I couldn’t put this book down. It sucked me in from the very beginning. I had already been much anticipating this book and it did not disappoint.
A lot of things I felt have been and we read throughout this book but still has open ends for the next book. I know it will eventually be coming to an end, but I’m ready for Rose to have a happily ever after.
Rose and Neely Kate get into their own investigations as usual. Many exciting things happen from the very beginning, but I felt this was such a common Rose story. We got the anticipation and the mystery. You think Denise Grover Swank is going to lead you one way and then the tables get turned.
Rose will do anything for her niece and nephew, as will Joe, Neely Kate and a multitude of others. Being thirty-eight weeks pregnant doesn’t stop Rose from trying to get to the bottom of why Ashley and Mikey were kidnapped. She does her Rose ways to search for them, only for her to find out more than she would’ve ever thought.
This next installment of the Rose Gardner Investigation series is not one you’re going to want to miss. Be ready for the emotions: happiness, laughter, joy but also sadness and heartache. You’re not going to regret this edge of the seat novel!
When the Bough Breaks was the best real thing happened to me in a while! If I could, I would give it a 10 shiny stars for sure! My mind was blown away with this book and there I were left with my feelings and emotions all over me. And this was so real! I cried so many times, laughed too but cried most of times. It was tears of sadness, relief and happiness. All sorts of emotions! I've been following and living through Rose's journey from the beginning since 28 and a half wishes and now I'm glad to see what a wonderful strong woman she became and she really deserves all the happiness she wished for. Even if it is different to what I envisioned for her and that breaks my heart, I know it is for better! I know some things just are meant to be. Those brilliantly written characters! I love them all and feel them as my best friends! Denise Grover Swank is incredible writer and each book is somehow even better than previous one but this is the Book of books! Yes, I now have my absolute favorite book! I'm going to buy a printed copy to be able to touch it and add to my treasure shelf. I really hope everyone will pick and love this series and this brilliant book as much as I do.
Denise is an amazing author. This book is extremely well written and elicited so many emotions. I have been with Rose since the third book in the first series was published and have loved all the books and her journey thus far. I truly love Rose and most of the characters in this series. They feel so real and I truly enjoy reentering her world with each book. In this book Rose is coming to the end of her pregnancy and her niece and nephew go missing. She jumps in to find them with the usual crew. She finds out quite a bit of information in her quest to find out what Hardshaw is doing and take them down. This book is a roller coaster of emotion, grab your tissues and enjoy!!
How is it possible that Denise is able to write each book better than the last? If I could give this book more stars I'd give it 10 bright stars!! I think that this book was everything and more. This book is at the top of my books for the year so far. I found myself laughing, crying happy tears, and holding a breath that I didn't even realize I was holding. You will take one hell of a ride with this book and when you're done, I promise you'll want to read it all over again. I love where Denise is taking this story. I have such high hopes for Rose and her future.
Rose may be very pregnant, but she will do anything to find Ashley and Mikey, nothing will stop her until they are safe and sound. Neely Kate and Rose are back to their antics trying to figure out how the most recent murder and the disappearance of the children and Mike are all tied together. As they continue to dig they realize things are a lot more dangerous then they expected and that they may have to take a step back. I loved that Rose was having more visions in this book then previously; some visions more shocking then others. Dermot plays a big role in this book and I can't imagine a better person to fill that role. Side note I'd love to learn more about Dermot, especially after a piece of his past is shared. (You'll have to read to know what I'm talking about). Rose comes to peace with what she wants in life and who she wants in it, and this whole scene made my heart so happy. We also learn about Mike and his involvement in the crime world.
I don't want to share any spoilers but this book has so many things happen and you won't want to miss out. I loved how Denise reflected back to the beginning a few times throughout the book, mentioning Rose's thoughts about a certain situation or person. It helped me to recall the series better without having to reread the entire series.
I think Denise Grover Swank is an amazing writer no matter what book she is writing. With that said do me a favor (and yourself)... Don't think about it, just pick up this book (and series if you haven't already) and get lost in Rose's world. You will be so happy you did.
Oh. My. Heart. My head and heart are still feeling the effects of the emotional rollercoaster this story took me on. Denise's faithful readers have been holding their breath in anticipation of this 6th installment in the Rose Gardner Investigation series. This book was SO MUCH more than I ever hoped it would be. Throughout the series, Rose has grown profoundly with each book. This chapter of her life is no different. As she prepares to take on the role of motherhood, Rose knows many changes are coming her way. Still lurking in the background of her worry is the threat of the nefarious Hardshaw group-what are they up to in Fenton County? When her niece and nephew go missing two weeks before her due date, Rose puts everything on hold to investigate their disappearance. Rose has help from all around her and some surprises along the way as she takes up the quest to find Ashley and Mikey. This is a MUST read book. Readers should prepare to have the entire day devoted to reading when they begin, I absolutely could not put this story down and I cannot wait for the next episode in Rose's story.
Just finished my ARC of When the Bough Breaks in about 8 hours (with some mandatory work time). You definitely don't want to miss this installment in the Rose Gardner series!
Rose is 2 weeks away from her due date and she cant wait to meet her baby! Being 2 weeks away you'd think she would take it easy, but that wouldn't be the Rose we all know and love. Instead she finds herself investigating the disappearance of her niece and nephew. During the course of her investigation she tries to figure out her feelings towards both Joe and James. She also has some help from her trusty sidekick NK (who happens to have some news of her own!)
If you pay close attention, and you're a fan of DGS's other books, you might even see a mention of another familiar character! (No spoilers!)
If I had one minor complaint, its that we don't get to "see" a lot of the other characters we've come to know and love. But even with this minor complaint the book is still worth 5 stars! I mean I couldn't put it down! I had to find out how everything played out and this book definitely hits you with all the feels! Funny, happy, sad, and everything in between. I definitely can't wait for the next release in January to see the blowup that is for sure going to happen.
Will Rose be able to sort out her feelings and find her niece and nephew before the baby arrives? Guess you'll have to read it to find out! (And if you haven't started this series from the beginning, what are you waiting for?!)
Why build up the relationship between james and rose to have it end like that? How does she suddenly love Joe and completely cuts off james. I am so disappointed in this ending. Rose is strong when she is with James but with everyone else she is weak. Why have us fall in love with rose and james to have it end like that? I feel like I wasted all that time invested in this story to be slapped with an ending that was really not fitting to the whole series. What a bummer, but the author is a fantastic writer and I love her other books.
When the Bough Breaks was everything I needed in the next Rose Gardner Investigation book. I laughed so hard through so many scenes. I felt all of Rose's emotions: happy, frustrated, angry, loved, excited, afraid, heartbreak, and pain. This book was such a fantastic exciting and action packed book. I was glad to see more of some of the amazing secondary characters like Bruce Wayne, Witt, and even Mason. Dermot has quickly become one of my favorite characters and hope we see a lot more from him in future books. Miss Mildred's participation in Rose's baby shower is hilarious and you can't miss Officer Ernie's near death experience. I was in stitches!!
I have loved Rose since 28 1/2 Wishes. She has grown so much throughout Rose Gardner Mysteries and even more in Investigations. I was so proud of her decisions and the strong independent woman she is now. I am also extremely proud of Joe and his growth since 28 1/2 Wishes. I love Neely Kate and Jed more with each book, too and am eager for their future.
The ending of When the Bough Breaks filled my heart with so much love and excitement and fear for the future. I need January to be here.
The “Rose Gardner Investigations” is my favorite Romantic Suspense / Women Sleuths series. All books are extremely well written, elicit hundreds of emotions, have remarkable plots, and, especially, show outstanding character developments. This sixth installment is no different, but, at the same time, it's well apart from the others. Rose’s niece and nephew are missing, and she sets herself the task to find them although she’s tired, cranked, hormonal, and about to give birth. In her quest, she tries to enlist the help of old friends and exes. Some of them will jump on board, some will turn their backs on her. In the process, she’ll come to a final decision about love. In many ways, this installment is the beginning of the end, as it answers the main conflict: who she will end up with. That will elicit different responses in different readers, but it sure won’t leave you indifferent. At all.
From the very first sentence I was thrown into Rose’s world yet again! I just love these characters and this story. Rose is late in pregnancy and though things have been quiet trouble has been brewing. This new book is beginning to tie several past theories and stories together. I real page turner with roles from our favorite friends like Witt, Jed, NK, and Dermot. Rose’s brother-in-law Mike has been acting odd for multiple books and when Rose’s niece and nephew come up missing everyone lends a helping hand to find them. Soon things are heating up and Rose finds herself in the thick of it and it appears she may end up doing this alone. So happy with the story and plot advancement in this book! It’s unbelievable how DGS can continue to write such a wonderful story that keeps us on the end he of our seats filled with love, joy, sometimes anxious and worry for these characters who have become our friends. Bravo!! I can NOT wait until the next book!
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. That being said, it took me 4 hours to finish this book, it was so damn good I couldn’t put it down!!
Rose has come so far from the first book. Now motherhood is knocking on her door. She is faced with the dilemma that all mothers go through constantly how to protect her baby, while helping others.
There were so many, WTH and WTF moments I couldn’t even stop for dinner. I chewed off every one of my nails!! This book was a bit tamer in the adventures of Rose and NK, but that didn’t stop the craziness and “what is going to happen!” moments.
This book is so monumental in so many ways! From the baby shower to the birth, I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with the characters all over again!
LOVE this series!! I can't express it enough (and I have probably expressed it in every review of every book in the Rose Gardner world.) I love Rose, I love Neely-Kate, Joe, James.... heck I even love the bad guys! Ms. Swank does such an incredible job of making each and every character real, sympathetic and believable. The plots are a bit wacky but so fun and endearing to read, it's hard to put the book down and a disappointment when that last page turns.
In this specific story, Rose is lumbering around in her last weeks of pregnancy when her niece and nephew turn up missing. Rose is much more level-headed than in the past (because she does have a baby to worry about) but still finds herself in more trouble than she bargains for! There were a few really obvious stretches that just didn't make any sense. Not even my fan-girl mind is willing to stretch that far.
I also felt SO BAD for James in this book. I know there is no way in the world that both Joe and James can get their happy endings (even though I'm praying for a miracle) and my heart just aches for James. So much so that I almost don't want to read the next book.... yeah, nope. I love you James but... gotta keep going.
This book is everything that I didn’t know I needed!!! I had certain hopes going into it and Denise far surpassed them. Rose does a lot of soul searching in this book. And Neely Kate is there offering support and some great advice to Rose, while also chasing down leads with the hilarity that we've come to know and love. I don’t want to give anything away; but will say it has its emotional raw moments that tugged on my heartstrings; along with happiness and laughter. This series has just gotten better and better. I finished very late last night and have been obsessing over it since. I can’t enough and am going to go reread it now! You don’t want to miss this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
Rose is having her baby whether she is ready or not. Life doesn't just stop when you are having a baby and we all know that Rose's life is anything but calm and collected. Everything seems to be happening good and/or bad and she's doing her best to keep it together.
Rose is one of my all time favorite characters and I love the way she has grown from a quiet and scared woman to a outspoken woman who knows how to get what she wants. She has three very powerful men in her past and depending on who you ask there's team James, team Mason, and team Joe. For me, it's always been Team Rose.
She is my roll model. I strive to be like Rose. This book was shocking in a lot of ways and many of them or things I never saw coming which is what I absolutely love best about Denise's books. She definitely deserves the title of one of my favorite authors of all time.
You don't want to miss this book and if you haven't read the please please do yourself a favor an pick up Twenty Eight and a Half Wishes. You won't regret it. This is worth so much more than 5 stars.
This book. This book has me in all sorts of feels. I’m still mind blown how after all these books, every one is even better than the last. I’ve been addicted to this series from the beginning. I've followed these characters and watched them grow and bond into the strong confident roles that they lead. This book is the epitome of everything I have been waiting for. Was I disappointed? Sure, maybe a little but from my own expectations and what I wanted for the characters I loved. But so much has happened in this book that I was left knowing in my heart that things worked out the way they were meant to. I’m still reeling from the choices made and the inevitable outcome it will bring. What does this mean for my beloved characters? That is for Denise Grover Swank to decide. I just know that no matter what, I. Am. Here. For. It!
Wow! This book was like a finale in so many ways, but even better because it’s not the end! We see Rose herself come full circle. There are moments where she’s vulnerable and lets her wounded side show. So like the girl we met back in 28. But we also see her strong, and brave, and confident. She embraces all the good things about Lady and becomes this beautiful version of herself. And a new mother. We see her bring a baby into this world in the most Rose fashion.
Old characters make appearances. Other series characters are given a shout-out. Officer Ernie does Officer Ernie things. Mildred makes you cringe. There’s surprises and heartbreaks. Tears and laughter. We reflect on the past and we get a glimpse at how beautiful the future will be!
Wow, this was one emotional ride and I loved every minute of this. Denise never disappoints nor hits a wrong note with this series and characters.
Rose has been through a journey in her short life and with a baby on the way she is going to have make some tough choices. Throughout this book, you will laugh, cry and sit with anticipation as the events unfold. Trouble always finds Rose and this book is no exception and there are many moments that will have you gasping and yelling shut the front door.
All I have to say is just sit back and enjoy the ride. Don't anticipate anything and let this story unfold before you.
Where do I even begin with this one?? From the moment that I started it, I couldn’t put it down. I can’t say what I really want to in this review because it will give so much of it away. Here’s what I can tell you: 1) there is action. 2) there will be tears. 3) there will be Muffy 4) there will be shenanigans.
If I say more, I’ll give things away. Get this book now!!
I was enthralled from the start. There are no slow moments in this book. From the humor in the behavior of the small town cops, Rose’s visions, both sad and joyous moments fill this book. They are closer to Hardshaw than ever before. ALMOST all of the characters in the series are present in this book and it will keep you engrossed the entire time.
Another Amazing Rose Adventure! The thrill of suspense and mystery made it impossible to put this book down. It filled me with a whirlwind of emotions. I can't stop thinking about it. I love how all of the characters change and evolve throughout the series. The depth and detail that the author has put into them and their world is fantastic. I can hardly wait to find out what happens next.
I loved this page turner. You will not want to put it down, it pulls you in from the first chapter. No better place to be than in Rose’s world. Rose has grown so much since the beginning of this series. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Denise never lets us down & has done it again.
Wow! In the most recent installment of the Rose Gardner Mysteries Series things take an even crazier turn. Rose is very very pregnant, trying to find out what happened to her niece and nephew and learning to navigate her new world with criminals and a live-in Chief Deputy.
I think it will definitely help to read the Rose Journal Entries that arrive in Denise’s e-newsletter because I was missing a few things and I realized it was because I had been saving the Journal Entries.
This was a great book and I really couldn’t figure out who had taken the kids and why. All your favorite characters are there too: Joe, Neely Kate, Muffy, Maeve, Mason, Bruce Wayne and Jed.
So everyone is really happy with the way this story is turning out and I feel like the odd man out. There was such build up to her and James story. A whole vision of her with an engagement ring just for her to end up choosing Joe?! Like what?! What was the point?! I’m disappointed to say the least. Her ending up with Joe after having Malcom’s baby makes no sense! And James becoming this evil person that shoots women for no reason is so out of character and makes no sense! I’m really only giving this a 3 because I’m committed to the series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Wow! Denise Grover Swank never disappoints her readers! I have been reading Rose Gardner books for five years and each and every new book is like a gift. I finished When the Bough Breaks this morning and needed some time to reflect on the incredible book that I just finished and to come to terms that I need to wait till January for the next book! Rose is thirty-eight weeks pregnant and needs to decide what she wants for herself and her baby. She is ready to have her (highly-anticipated by all Rose fans) baby and have peace in her life. However, things haven't calmed down in the seedy side of Henrietta County. While Rose's Lady days are over, for now, there is still plenty to keep her in harm's way. While I would say that this installment is milder than other Rose books, it does not disappoint! There are decisions that Rose makes that I may not agree with but that's what makes her character great! I am the reader, I cannot control what characters do, I trust the author to let the characters lead them to their own destiny. Nothing in Rose's world is ever black and white and I wouldn't be surprised if January leads up to another plot twist. I know that I will be reading more Rose in January and loving every word! Do yourself a favor and read all the Rose books - you will love them!!!
When the Bough Breaks took me through a full range of emotions. There is comic relief, emotional turmoil, heartache, and joy. Rose gets a few answers to some of the questions she has had from previous books, but I think she is still in the dark about so much. James knows more than he’s willing to let her in on. Many of the things he is doing is mostly in the name of trying to protect her, but it is ultimately bringing him misery. We get to see more of Dermot in this book and it’s interesting to see how much Rose has come to trust and depend on him. Many past characters make a reappearance, if only in name or recounting of an event. It was nice to be reacquainted if only for a moment. The main purpose of this book is fulfilled when Rose has her baby, in probably the most ‘Rose’ fashion ever and she solves the mystery of what happened to her niece and nephew. There are still so many unresolved questions that are sure to come with the next book. I honestly don’t know how everything still lingering could be answered in one more book, but I can’t wait to find out!
First, I can't write a proper review without giving spoilers. So much of my feelings right now revolve around specific events in the story, so I must be vague. I can say that this book changes everything. You will look at some beloved characters and change your opinion on them. SO MUCH HAPPENS. You will second guess everything, you will get mad at Rose, you will cheer her on and you will read the end of the book and sit stunned for a moment. I HIGHLY recommend reading this book. When I first finished the book, I was not happy with some of the newest developments, but as I processed everything, I realized that this was the only way. I accept it now, and I want to know HOW DOES DENISE THINK OF THESE THINGS?? HAHA!! READ THIS BOOK, you will not regret it! Your strong reaction is only a testament to this amazing author!!
