I feel like telling you a story....

After watching a lovely filmed version of The Nutcracker ballet the other night with my sisters, I crept down the hall in the dark to visit an old bookcase groaning with picture books that we are too fond of to pack away, but are oft forgotten and, to my shame, rather dusty from disuse.

I located two of my favorite old picture books by the blue glimmer of a flashlight and then retreated into my room to curl up with this old friend. Memories rushed back as I turned the worn pages and admired the lively illustrations once again. I was suddenly a little girl again, scribbling in a notebook by candlelight one snowy evening after the power went out, trying to capture the magic of The Nutcracker in my own retelling.

That retelling never saw the light of day, but the memory of this special book has never entirely faded from my memory. It is as charming and enchanted as the first time I read it. It's still magic.

Nice retelling of The Nutcracker story with beautiful illustrations. My children loved it and although my grandsons don't like to sit through the full story yet, they do enjoy looking at the pictures and making up their own story. Nicely done.

Eh, dated illustrations that hold little magic. The scenery is fine, but the people look funky. Terrible ending and this version spends little time in the Land of Sweets. Does not include the Perlipat backstory.

Not my favorite adaptation of ‘The Nutcracker’ but no matter how you look at it, the story is magical and brings you back to the times in your life when your dreams of Christmas were made of sugar plums and candy canes. Pure magic 💫

I loved this book when I was a child. When I could read on my own, I made it a point to read it every Christmas and any time in between. The cover became detached from the pages due to so many readings.
