Peça-chave na teoria de Bakhtin, a Teoria do romance foi desenvolvida nos anos 1930, mas só foi publicada, e de forma parcial, no ano da morte do autor, em 1975, no volume Questões de literatura e estética. Apenas em 2012 o texto integral veio à luz, na Rússia, no conjunto de suas obras completas. É a partir dessa nova edição crítica que se publica agora no Brasil o primeiro dos três tomos da Teoria do romance, com tradução de Paulo Bezerra, além de um glossário que discute e esclarece os conceitos bakhtinianos.
Este volume tem como tema O discurso no romance, e traz as reflexões de Bakhtin sobre a especificidade desse gênero literário; nele, o autor questiona a estilística tradicional e desenvolve o conceito de heterodiscurso, destacando as múltiplas vozes que ressoam na prosa romanesca. Ao considerar a linguagem como um fenômeno vivo e plural, o teórico russo revolucionou nossa forma de ler e interpretar o romance.

Although Bakhtin acted in the debates on aesthetics that took place in the Soviet Union in the 1920s, scholars rediscovered his not well known distinctive position in the 1960s.
