James Van Sweden is one of my favorite gardening book authors. I like both his design style and also how he educates and pushes the reader to use their senses. This unfortunately is not one of his better books. Most of the book is dedicated to specific gardens he designed. Each is allotted about 3 pages which is insufficient to really understand the design. Garden layouts are provided with numbered plant keys but I was not able to visualize the gardens well.

Living with a James van Sweden garden (!) in DC got me into gardening. That and my mother's love for gardens.
