The world of Malefic is as wicked as the devil and twice as tricky. Young Dr. Freust, a psychiatrist in a castle full of deranged paranormal mutants, must pit her wits and her sanity in a dangerous game as she takes her deceased father's controversial fringe scientific experiments to unimaginable levels in order to stop the lunatics from taking over the asylum. Malefic combines the storytelling twists of The Twilight Zone with the outrageous sensibilities of American Horror Story.

This book is built on an interesting premise - that a high-security facility exists for criminally insane inmates with paranormal abilities.

The protagonist is a disgraced psychologist who lost her license after sleeping with a patient. Her father dies, and his employers - a secret religious organisation - offer her his job running their asylum. She accepts, and goes into the job as a sceptic, only to discover that the inmates’ abilities are very real, and that her father had been running experiments with the inmates as test subjects.

Some of the inmates are well thought out and creepy, while others stop even trying to pretend to be grounded in the same story universe and have anime-level superpowers.

Malefic has an all-male team writing this female protagonist, and the male gaze is very apparent. The black-and-white art is actually pretty decent. There seems to have been limits applied to the levels of nudity depicted, so I suppose they were trying to avoid being banned by becoming explicit.

The cover says Malefic is the most messed up comic on the market, which is far from true. It’s still fun, despite the cringy softporn, as the horror elements save it.

I have read several graphic novels by Dan Schaffer, so I assumed that this book would have an interesting and unique premise. I was correct in my assumptions. Dan steps up his game by mixing psychology and the supernatural into a messed up crazy as fuck story.

The basic plot of the story revolves around a disgraced psychiatrist, Evelyn Freust, that takes over as the head of an insane asylum after her father dies under strange occurrences. What makes this story outstanding is watching Evelyn's mental breakdown as she tries to help the very disturbing and sick patients. She refuses to believe in the supernatural until it messes with her head.

The art work is done in a water color wash of black, white, and grey tones. It beautifully matches the tone of the story.
