About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

ஹாஸ்யம், சோகம், மர்மம், குற்றம், திரில்லர் போன்ற பல்வேறு பரிமாணங்களைக் கொண்ட எட்டு சிறுகதைத் தொகுப்பு இரயில் புன்னகை. 1980ம் வருடங்களில் சுஜாதா எழுதிய இந்த சிறுகதைகள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் வாசகர்களின் கவனத்தை சற்றும் சிதறவிடாமல், முழுமையாக ஈர்க்கும் வண்ணம் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஒவ்வொரு கதையும் "நான் முந்தி, நீ முந்தி" என்று முதலிடத்துக்குப் போட்டியிடுகின்றன. என்னைப் பொறுத்தவரை இந்தத் தொகுப்பிலுள்ள எட்டு சிறுகதைகளும் - இரயில் புன்னகை, குதிரை, அரை வைத்தியன், முழு வைத்தியன், சேவகி, பேட்டி, ஜானகி சாகவில்லை, பாரிஸ் தமிழ் பெண் - முதலிடத்தை வகிக்க தகுதியுள்ளவை.

எனக்கு எப்போதும் சிறுகதைகள் பிடிக்கும். ஏனென்றால் நீங்கள் ஒரே புத்தகத்தில் பல்வேறு கதைகளைப் படிக்கலாம். இந்த புத்தகத்தில் ஒரு த்ரில்லர், வேடிக்கையான, சிந்திக்கக்கூடிய கதை, உதவியற்ற தன்மை, கொடுமை, ஆண்மை ஆகிய அனைத்தும் ஒரே புத்தகத்தில் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளன. மனதைக் கவரும் கருத்துடன் ஒரே புத்தகத்தில் இந்த வகையான கதைக்களங்களை நினைத்துப் பாருங்கள்.

It's a compilation of short stories. All stories pack a punch at the end. Through each story he reveals the unpleasant truth that happens in our day to day life.
Well written.
This book will definitely satisfy readers who are new to reading Tamil books.
I like Sujatha's books. This is my third book. Happy reading.

This collection showcases Sujatha Sir's earlier works. The signature twists he's known for in short stories, often appearing in the final line, are present in glimpses, though not as impactful as in his later narratives. Sujatha Sir is a master of the short story, and this book further solidifies that reputation.

Short Stories Featured

Rayil Punnagai: Our hero encounters a person who smiles at him during a Mumbai electric train journey. This person then faces an accident, and the hero tries to ensure they reach the safety of the railway police. He can't stop thinking about it, and what transpires next...

Gudhirai: A man gets bitten by a horse, creating a scene at his home. He later realizes this is a daily occurrence for the horse owner.

Arai Vaithiyan: A half-baked doctor, feeling ruined by his senior, plans to move and open his own clinic. While senior goes for a function, a snakebite patient comes to clinic, and we see how this doctor attempts to treat the victim leading to self realisation.

Muzhu Vaithiyan: A reporter tries to assess the effectiveness of a parallel medical science doctor but gets caught red-handed. The doctor intends to use this for professional advertisement. The story explains the difficulties faced by good practitioners of parallel medical science.

Sevagi: A nurse on duty in a village attempts to convince residents about family planning, but no one agrees. She has a target of 15. As she succeeds in convincing people, she develops a fondness for a particular child. Why does she like this kid?

Peytti: A well-known doctor, who owns many pets, credits his wife for all his achievements. His wife appears to be incredibly flexible, agreeing to everything he says. The final phrases reveal how she manages such compliance and where she truly vents her frustrations.

Janaki Sagavillai: Janaki is murdered by her wealthy husband, who conceals the crime, making it look like a suicide. He feigns sorrow for her loss. Things take a turn when he reads a novel that mirrors his own story, after which he hallucinates, ultimately leading to his death. The twist at the end is typical of Sujatha.

Parisil Tamizhpen: Sujatha and his wife travel to Paris, where they find a Tamil hotel. One of the eater welcomes them home to meet a Tamil girl living with him, who is this Tamil girl?

The emotions Sujatha Sir evokes in his stories, making you ponder each character and their behavior, are characteristic of his writing. One can truly feel, if not fully comprehend, why Sujatha Sir is such an impactful short story writer. This is a must-read for Sujatha fans and anyone who enjoys short stories.

இந்தப் புத்தகத்தில் இருக்கும் கதைகள் வெளிவந்து 35 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் ஆகிறது, அப்படியும் இன்று எழுதப்பட்டவை போலவே இருக்கின்றன. மர்மம், நகைச்சுவை, சோகம் என்று எல்லாவற்றையும் அருமையாக அவருக்கே உண்டான பாணியில் எழுதியிருக்கிறார்.
