About the author

One of science fiction's great humorists, Sheckley was a prolific short story writer beginning in 1952 with titles including "Specialist", "Pilgrimage to Earth", "Warm", "The Prize of Peril", and "Seventh Victim", collected in volumes from Untouched by Human Hands (1954) to Is That What People Do? (1984) and a five-volume set of Collected Stories (1991). His first novel, Immortality, Inc. (1958), was followed by The Status Civilization (1960), Journey Beyond Tomorrow (1962), Mindswap (1966), and several others. Sheckley served as fiction editor for Omni magazine from January 1980 through September 1981, and was named Author Emeritus by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 2001.

it's probably good that robert sheckley is dead, because if i ever met him, i'd probably just start screaming WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS!?!?!?? WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS!??? WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS??!?? WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS!?!?!???? and that would be embarrassing.

Lanigan screamed. He screamed while people gathered around and looked at him (but didn't do anything or become anything), and then a policeman came, as he was supposed to (but the sun didn't change shape once), and then an ambulance rushed down the invariable street (but without trumpets, minus strumpets, on four wheels instead of a pleasing three or 25) and the ambulance men took him to a building which was exactly where they expected to find it, and there was a great deal of talk by people who stood, untransformed and untransformable, asking him questions in a room with relentlessly white walls.

Robert Sheckley was known for many things, among which was his penchant for absurd titles. The true title of this collection is: The People Trap and other Pitfalls, Devices and Delusions, as Well as Two Sniggles and a Contrivance. It's left to the reader to decide which story goes under which category. The book contains fourteen stories, the majority of which appeared in Galaxy magazine edited by H.L. Gold and later Frederik Pohl, who also published two of them in his Star original anthology series in the 1950s. Two stories were original to this book, there's one each from Amazing and F & SF, and one early one is from Thrilling Wonder Stories and may be Sheckley's only true pulp magazine appearance. The book was first printed in 1968, but the majority of the stories are from the early to mid-'50s, which leads me to speculate they're the leavings and leftovers from his many previous collections. None of them particularly stand out, but there's still the familiar trademark humorous satire and clever quipage for which Sheckley was known. They're a bit dated in spots, of course, but it's still a fun read.

Шо вам сказать. Очікував трохи більшого, якщо чесно. Чогось більш зрілого і серйозного, хай і в короткому форматі оповідань. А тут воно радше схоже на sci-fi казки, дуже вже спрощена подача і замилені деталі. І напевно як і в будь-якій збірці оповідань, деякі історії заходять добре, деякі не дуже, але все ж як на мій смак тут надто вже спрощені, хоча ідеї бувають досить непогані.

Власне, важливий нюанс, це моя перша спроба в Шеклі і може наступні книжки сподобаються більше. Принагідно ще обов'язково спробую щось з його творчості, може просто ця невдала для старту.

Загалом по книзі, якщо коротко - зібрка науково-фантастичних оповідань про різноманітні пригоди в космосі і на Землі. Як правило досить короткі - 7-20 сторінок, деякі пов'язані спільним сюжетом (можливо всі, а я не вкурив). Як і зазвичай у науково-фантастичних оповіданнях, це такі собі короткі нариси на якусь окрему концепцію. Написано, на мій смак, загалом непогано, але, як казав вже, надто вже спрощено. Хотілося б чогось більш зрілого і концетрованого. Тим не менш, думаю, багато кому може і зайти.
Переклад непоганий, саме видання сипатичне, хоч космонафт на обкладинці виглядає трохи надто badass як для цих оповідань :D

Una colección de relatos de ciencia ficción de la vieja escuela que tratan de contactos con estrambóticas razas alienígenas, la autorreplicación aplicada a máquinas o qué hacer con la vida en mundos muy contaminados (introduciendo varias veces el trabajo de descontaminador).

Mi favorito ha sido ¿Podemos hablar un rato?, hermano espiritual de Babel-17 y La historia de tu vida, que me ha recordado mucho al videojuego Out There en cuanto a las consecuencias de no entender bien los idiomas alienígenas.

Збірка оповідань, по кожному з яких можна було б зняти прекрасні фільми і навіть цілі серіали. (Можливо, такі вже є, я не перевіряла). Якісна цікава фантастика.

Тепер, що стосується роботи команди BOOK CHEF, мені сподобалась обкладинка книжки, оформлення заголовків оповідань і нумерація сторінок (ліва сторінка — вгорі, права — внизу). Але ці всюдисущі очевидні ляпи типу: «Маллени (подружжя, а отже вони) провелА ніч...». Ба більше, на тій же сторінці «від тридцятого квітнА». І так по всій книзі періодично зустрічаються подібні невичитані помилки, ріжуть очі і внутрішній слух.

Ще одна збірка оповідань Роберта Шеклі, як із досить відомими творами, так і не дуже, як із справді цікавими, так і прохідними, і це ще одна оригінальна збірка, тобто та, яка із точно таким змістом вийшла вперше, і це краще, на мою думку, ніж робити збірку із вибраних творів. Я читав колись дуже давно подібну збірку із вибраних його оповідань, власне звідти і дізнався вперше про такі його перлинки як-от ті, що є і в цій збірці - "Запах думки" та "Остання зброя" (причому це оповідання раніше переходило із збірки в збірку під назвою "Абсолютна зброя", тому я і здивувався, побачивши іншу назву, але в оригіналі так і є - "The Last Weapon", хоча за контекстом все ж таки ближче не остання, а абсолютна).
І щодо перекладу було таки одне зауваження - так, в оповіданні "Заборонена зброя" ми читаємо

Сіммонс стояв неподалік, записував щось на невеличкому ноутбуці.

Ноутбуці..? емм.. стривайте, який ноутбук, коли оповідання було написано в 1952 році? Дивимось в оригінал -

Simmons was standing beside them, jotting down notes on a little pad.

тобто це скоріше записник, а не ноутбук (хоча у астронавтів це запросто могли би бути і ноутбуки, якби ж вони хоч трішки були описані в оповіданні).

Із тих оповідань, що мені сподобались, я би виділив наступні:
"Заборонена зона" - про планету, яка не зовсім планета;
"Не спробуєш - не дізнаєшся" - про потужну силу підсвідомості;
"Сезон риболовлі" - трішки моторошне оповідання, про зникнення людей;
"Світ, який наснився" - про заплутаність між сном та реальністю

Колись пробував слухати Шеклі, але тоді мені чомусь не пішло. Думаю, що тоді доводилося більше зосереджуватися, бо сюжет починався із невідомих слів, тому я змінив книжку на простішу. А тут окремі оповіді, цікаві, зі схожою ідеєю, де в якихось далеких світах щось працює не за тим принципом, що у нас. Нерідко використовується принцип парадоксу й велику увагу автор приділяє несподіваним закінченням. Деякі оповіді нагадали мені "Міста незримі" Кальвіно, де роль чарівних, незвичайних міст, що інтригують відіграють далекі планети та цивілізації, з котрими стикається людство. Конкретно ця книжка мені сподобалася. Шукатиму ще його коротку прозу.

A collection of the short fiction of Robert Sheckley, all of which appeared in the science fiction magazines of the 1950s. None are particularly memorable; all have some kind of twist, sometimes quite predictable, and a tone of wry humour.

The eponymous story is probably the weakest. It uses the idea, novel at the time, of a race where the prize is an acre of land in an overpopulated Earth. The goal is to reach the land registry office in New York which is supposedly a densely packed criminal underworld - as per the 1970s 'Escape to New York' starring Kurt Russell - but in the event is more like a pantomine landscape complete with heart-of-gold bandit chief's daughters. The final twist is probably the best part of the story.

One of the better stories, 'Restricted Area', tips over into fantasy but is quite amusing. There are three connected tales concerning the misadventures of two old friends who have set up a planetary decontamination business: two stories are about what happens when one of them buys an odd alien gadget, and the last is how they set out to decontaminate a planet which has a reputation for ghosts. Overall, a 2-star rating as nothing held my interest very well.

Гумористичні, сатиричні, часто абсурдні короткі оповідання, які дуже затягують.
Теми різноманітні Космос, незвідані планети, хитромудрі машини, створення/знищення... І це все приправлено добрим гумором. Пригоди у які втраплять Грегор і Арнольд через свої бізнес ідеї це окреме 🥰.
Найбільш сподобались та запам'ятались "Заборонена зона", "Сезон полювання", "Привид V".

Колись давно я була в захопленні від оповідань Шеклі. Мені тоді чомусь здавалось, що ці ідеї нереально революційні і дуже неординарні. А зараз якось перечиталось і не залишило за собою враження.
Проте Привид V досі моя улюблена історія Шеклі, і я рада була її собі нагадати якраз наприкінці збірки.

Some good, some not-so-good stories

Some good stories, some not-so-good stories. They make for a light evening of reading 1960’s SciFi. A few would’ve made great first chapters of an actual book.

The cutest story was GHOST V where Arnold and Gregor from the AAA Ace Planet Decontamination Service were up and running once again, this time facing the ghost monsters of Planet Ghost V.

The best scathing social commentary story was Dreamworld. Even though you figure out early what’s going on, you still want to know how the other side is portrayed.

Fishing Season and Restricted Area were two stories that gave you a nice little mental hiccup if you let your imagination zoom out to see the bigger world.

The most creative take on telepathy I’ve ever read is in The Odor of Thought, with a nice little twist at the end.

These stories remind me of Asimov's short stories, and I dislike them for the same reasons.
The four I read all followed the same formula: a mildly tedious improbable build-up to a mildly surprising 'twist' ending.
Life's too short and there are too many good books to read to waste my time on this stuff.

This slim and small collection houses some of Sheckley's sharpest tales. They are funny, thought-provoking, satirical, and subtly lyrical. Also, they are more prescient than most of the sff stuff simply because of one thing. Sheckley had imbued his stories and novellas with such a humane warmth— all wryly, of course— that has kept the stories fresh till date.

Readable but inconsistent. "Shall We Have A Little Talk?" is the best story here. "The Victim from Space" and "The Laxian Key" were pretty good, the others fairly average. Often the set-up is quite intriguing (as in "Diplomatic Immunity" and "Restricted Area") but the resolution is disappointing.

Прочитавши перше оповідання вже думав відмовитись від читання (таке враження, що це було написано дитиною), але змусивши себе дати ще один шанс - я не прогадав. Були різні оповідання, проте найкращим, я гадаю, є «Сезон риболовлі». Перше можете пропустити)
