A heartwarming cozy mystery series about losing everything, taking a chance, and starting again.
After suffering a personal tragedy Abby Sullivan buys a huge old seaside mansion she has never even seen, packs up her life in San Francisco, and moves to Holiday Bay Maine, where she is adopted, quite against her will, by a huge Maine Coon Cat named Rufus, a drifter with her own tragic past named Georgia, and a giant dog with an inferiority complex named Ramos. What Abby thought she needed was alone time to heal. What she ended up with was, an inn she never knew she wanted, a cat she couldn't seem to convince to leave, and a new family she'd never be able to live without.
In book 5 in the series, the new bank president, who happens to be the son of the man who founded the community bank, is found dead and buried in his own grave. The man was not popular in the small community after making a lot of changes with his father's passing and the list of possible suspects who might want him dead is extensive.
Meanwhile, it is October and the inn is hosting Halloween themed events including a murder mystery dinner party. The haunted weekends are just for fun but when guests report hearing noises in the hallway, Abby wonders if the inn might actually be haunted for real.
Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home. Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

Another winner from Kathi Daley! This series has quickly risen to the top of my must-buy-the-next-one list. Besides having the wonderful characters her readers become attached to as friends and grow to love, which Kathi Daley is known for, and the theme weekends that small town cozy readers adore, this series gives us not just one crime to solve but intertwined mysteries. I also have happy to report that characters we meet promise to return in future books!
When we had been lulled into thinking the closed case that Abby's husband had been looking into at the time of his death had been taken care of, it resurfaces in an unexpected way. Then a real life mystery is tied to one of Abby's own books she has authored. Her inn, run with partner, Georgia, is now open for business and fun weekend events and there is need for additional help. Guests check in with mysteries of their own to solve and talk soon rises about a ghost roaming the hallways late at night.
Disappointing! Kathi Daley’s The Inn at Holiday Bay: Haunting in the Hallway (The Inn at Holiday Bay Mysteries #5), I feel, is not up to Ms. Daley’s standard at all. I finished the mystery, but I felt as though I was just passing time. I decided to read this book as October is upon us, and Halloween is not too far away. Unfortunately, this story is just bland and choppy. Cozies have been fun for me usually, but not this one. The paranormal is of interest to me, but is not found in this book. Of course, the paranormal does not need to be present for a novel to be ‘scary’, but this book is not the least bit scary, humorous, or fun. It is repetitive. Definitely not a book for the season of Halloween. I like Ms. Daley’s books and her writing, but I did not enjoy this one. :( 2 stars - for the author’s effort.
In this next book of the series the bank president has gone missing and people are speculating on just what could have happened to the man. After leaving the bank one evening he just up and disappeared, most people think someone killed him but without a body whose to know what happened. While writing Abby remembers something that she wrote in one of her earlier books and takes the idea to the local police, she had a character bury their victim in their own grave. When the Colt digs up the grave not only do they find the body of the missing banker but a body under his that is much older. Who is the second body and how did he come to be in the grave? Are the two deaths connected? The banker had many enemies and so finding his killer isn't going to be easy, plus Colt has to figure out just who the second body belongs to. Follow along as Abby and Colt take their own paths into investigating who killed the banker and why. Along the way Abby has to deal with a haunting in her newly opened inn, and a great group of guests. Will she be able to juggle her writing, investigating, and keeping her guest happy? This is such a heart felt series that is filled with a wonderful group of characters. I love the addition of the pets and how they themselves are their own characters and not just filler. I look forward to seeing what type of guests visit next and what mystery is thrown upon Abby.
Very, very s-l-o-w! Ridiculous number of suspects and all their histories made for tedious reading, which sent me skimming through chapters, several times!
So much unneeded info that it was very hard to stay engaged in this book.
I will say that the ending was a surprise and satisfying, but just didn't rate my Favorite's shelf.
This is a really intriguing book with alot of twists and turns that will keep you interested. Has many wonderful characters that she wrote in this book , they keep you wanting more. She truly continues to surprise me with every book.
Haunting in the Hallway is the fifth book in Kathi Daley’s awesome The Inn at Holiday Bay series. The writing style flows smoothly, and the book is a clean and easy read. The storyline is well-plotted and complex, with lots of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and guessing. The setting is charming, and the well-developed characters are affable, compassionate, and caring. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy well-crafted cozy mysteries.
Abby Sullivan’s life changed dramatically when she lost her husband and their infant son in a tragic accident, but she’s adjusting well to her new life in Holiday Bay, Maine. Abby, who has started writing again, has a book signing at the local bookstore. Georgia Carter is a talented cook and baker, who is also recovering from traumatic events in her life. Georgia and her dog, Ramos, are living with Abby, Rufus, the Maine Coon cat who adopted her, and Molly, a terrier mix Abby recently adopted, in a cottage located on the property. Abby and Georgia have been working hard to complete the renovations on the mansion she purchased and have opened their inn to guests. They are hosting fun-filled Halloween themed events each weekend, including a murder mystery dinner. Both women love mingling with their guests and learning what brought them to the area, and Georgia is truly in her element, feeding and caring for their guests. When several guests report hearing noises in the hallways during the night, everyone wonders if the inn is haunted. The new bank president, Wesley Hamilton, has been missing for over a week, and on a hunch provided by Abby, her friend, Police Chief Colt Wilder, finds Wesley’s body buried in his own grave in a private cemetery located on property owned by the Hamiltons, but that’s not all he finds. Wesley made lots of enemies when he started making changes after his father passed and he took over the bank, so there’s no shortage of suspects for Colt to check out. The case turns into a complex mystery, and Abby brainstorms with Colt regarding his investigation.
Haunting in the Hallway earns 5/5 Mazes of Pumpkins...Engaging and Clever!
There are a few things Kathi Daley does well making her this work a personal favorite. First, a clever murder along with an inn of secrets, desires, and queries is engaging. Abby’s hunch where to find the missing bank manager uncovered two murders and then missing siblings, fresh starts, and ghostly noises. Next, her vivid descriptions for holiday prep and festivities put me into the holiday spirit. It’s October in Holiday Bay with pumpkins and a hint of restless ghosts playing tricks. Third, is family! She creates a marvelous group of characters that become intimately connected, and dialogue that illustrates well the different personalities. With a heartwarming surrogate family, Daley includes a bit of a sibling issue between Abby and her sister. But she rarely highlights disfunction...well, unless those are motives for murder. Next, Kathi’s writing style focuses on realistic crimes, creative motives, and investigative techniques that always include, not circumvent, law enforcement. Abby sees things others might not using informal questioning, the internet, and local “in the know.” The town’s Chief of Police and friend values her input, but he his “by the book” attitude is apparent as he tries to steers her away from danger. There’s always a delightful conclusion to all the mysteries and someone carted off to jail! A personal issue is that clues and revelations too often occur “off camera.” I enjoy this series and recommend this fifth book Haunting in the Hallway!
Altra piacevole lettura. Se devo trovare un difetto a questo, come agli altri libri di questa autrice, è che sono troppo brevi, finiscono alla svelta...
I enjoyed reading this book very much. The author is very talented. She makes the characters and storyline very entertaining. I would recommend it to anyone.
I enjoyed this fifth in the series. Abby's bed and breakfast is up and running but noised in the hallway at night is waking the guests, could the place be haunted? On top of that Abby figures out where the body of a missing bank manager could be found and the list of suspects is long. It was a fun read although I admit there seemed to be so many characters that I was starting to get confused. However as always Ms. Daley's characters are real and likable, people that I would like to hang out with. I will continue on with this series.
3.5. This is the first book I read in the series. It’s good but I probably should have started with the first book since some relationships were not quite clear to me. I was also a bit disappointed with the reaction to the second murder and the dismissal without any further investigation to catch the killers.
I'm really enjoying this series by Kathi Daley. I find all the characters to be quite interesting and I am enjoying getting to know them all. This particular book was really good, the mystery was well told and I had no idea who committed the crime.
Another excellent book in The Inn at Holiday Bay series. I enjoyed the individual stories by each of the people staying at the inn and the murder mysteries to be solved. Even Rufus has a big part in this story! This is a very enjoyable book and an excellent series!
Ms. Daley is a favorite author and I especially love this series. Abby's Inn is busy in the fall with special events as weekend guests come to enjoy the festivities in Holiday Bay. Abby and Georgia have guests with their own story lines, too, which enhance the story.
I really love this series, and it seems like each new book is even better than the last. That's saying a lot, since they are all wonderful. Haunting in the Hallway is no exception. I enjoyed every page and as always, was left with a good feeling and a wish for the next book to be available soon! Don't miss Haunting in the Hallway!
Another great story in the Inn at Holiday bay series. This one takes place at Halloween. And as usual there is more than one mystery to solve at in Holiday bay.
This was a pleasant enough book in a pleasant enough series. However, the proof-reading and sentence structure was dreadful, and the book had a throw-away ending. Frankly, this read like a first or second draft rather than a finished product.
Haunting in the Hallway is the fifth book in the exciting The Inn at Holiday Bay cozy mystery series. The elements of a cozy mystery are present including suspense, romance, humor, love, friends and family, and a sense of community.
This story takes place in the charming tourist town of Holiday Bay, Maine. The main character is Abby Sullivan, a mystery writer from San Francisco who, after suffering a devastating personal tragedy, sold her condo, packed up all her belongings, bought a huge old house she had never seen in a town she had never been to, and moved to Holiday Bay. The story starts with Abby and local police chief, Colt Wilder, in a cemetery on a dark and rainy night. They are looking into the possibility that a local man missing for 10 days is buried in his own grave. Renovations in the old mansion are complete and the inn is open for business. Abby is busy getting to know and seeing to the needs of her guests, while planning a murder mystery dinner and other festive events. She works with her new friends to uncover the answers to the many questions they encounter in three or four different mysterious circumstances.
This book is filled with the sights of Halloween. The fall season and fabulous Halloween decorations: with pumpkins, orange and white lights in the trees and around windows and doors, ghosts and skeletons hanging from the doorways, and flickering lights, strange noises, and decorations in the hallway at night at the inn make for a festive and spooky atmosphere.
There is a theme of second chances in this series and in most of Mrs. Daley’s stories. I love the way she writes in a continuing saga fashion with hints and clues to stories in the future (and red herrings). I love that not all questions are resolved in each book. I enjoy the character development. As always, this author’s writing flows smoothly, and her setting and relatable characters make for an extremely enjoyable and quick read. I really look forward to reading the next book in this series.
CLOSE TO DNFing THE SERIES ALTOGETHER. I'LL GIVE IT ONE MORE CHANCE.
PREMISE: Abby Sullivan runs an Inn in Holiday Bay. The new bank president, who happens to be the son of the man who founded the community bank, is found dead and buried in his own grave.
THOUGHTS: Ok so, I love my cozies and am starting to enjoy the mystery side of them a lot more lately. However, with all the books in the Holiday Bay Cozy Mystery series thus far, I feel like I've always been out of the loop with the mystery. Example: This book opens up with Abby and the detective finding a body that she somehow got lucky with finding becuase she wrote a book that had the same thing happen. Now, granted, as a premise this sounds great. But this is literally the opening. No backstory. The mystery began before the book started, Abby found the body, now post-that, welcome to page one of the book? Also the Inn wasn't what I wanted it to be. I understand that these books are short, but often they read like cliffnotes as opposed to an actual story. For example: At one stage Abby and her employee talk about the guests like they're numbers saying something like "A and B are in room 1, C is in room 2 and D room 3. A checks out in 2 days, B in 3 and C in 4". Not to mention they plan this (what sounds like) fun event 'murder mystery night' and here's all we see.... Cut to employee saying "Wow, they really enjoyed the night." Ummm no. I wanted to actually experience it, not be led to it, skip over it and get a one sentance summary on the guests feelings. I will read book 6, but can not promise to read book 7.
I like the series because of the multiple of mysteries that show up after the last book left in a bit of a momentous moment but I really wanted to know what happened with Annie I felt there was this big hype about their relationship and how she refused to talk to her and then this book started without the mention until maybe a quarter of the way into it stating that they were mending things but I really wanted to know what happened like how the mending was going. I figured they would kind of start off where it stopped as most of the series tended to occur pretty close to when the last book ended. Anyways I want to say at least a few months have gone by since the last book and the rentals are going great and meeting many new people and Georgia and tanner are definitely heading to coupledom. This time the current bank manager is basically like Scrooge he’s a mean person who is affecting a bunch of people and is found to be dead along with another body and the crazy thing is this bank manager Wesley has million people who would want them dead. I like tell the story progressed and the healing that seems to be going on in the crazy cat Rüfüs.
Abby Sullivan's new inn is up and running and doing very well. Georgia is doing great managing but things are going so well, they're thinking about hiring help. The only thing not going as planned is that there are signs of a ghost in the inn. Could the inn really be haunted. In addition, the new bank president is missing and Abby has the idea to look in the grave site that is saved for him in the family plot. It turns out that he is there but there's also an older body. Can she and Colt solve the mystery of both murders? There's also the mystery of where Rufus, Abby's Maine Coon cat is going when he sneaks out of the cottage and what he's up to.
The fifth in Kathi's The Inn at Holiday Bay series, this book was a great read. It was fun with fabulous characters. I love the animals in the book especially Rufus who has a giant attitude to go along with his size. I love that both Abby and Georgia are moving beyond their tragic pasts and going on with their futures. I highly recommend this book and the series.
There were numerous mysteries in this latest installment of The Inn at Holiday Inn Series. There was a recent murder of the new bank president nobody liked who was buried in his own grave along with an unknown body. The Inn is finally open and people are coming there to solve their own mysteries. To top it off a person who lives in San Francisco shows up at Abby’s book signing. She is the sister of one of the cold case victims her deceased husband Ben had been investigating. The 2 murder cases are resolved in an unexpected manner. The mystery involving two of the guests is resolved. The ongoing mystery involving cases Ben was investigating will I’m sure be further explored in the next entries in this series.
New characters are being added to the Inn at Holiday family. I lo forward to getting to know them further as the Series progresses. The relationships between Abby and Colt and Georgia and Tanner are heating up and getting more complicated.
I’m happy the next installments will be out soon as I really love this Series!
I thought that I would like this much better based on all the rave reviews it got. A big problem was that I was in the mood for something Halloweeny. Based on the title and the cover, this looked like it would fit the bill. Nope. The haunting in the hallway turned out to be a minor subplot. There was some talk of Halloween and a scene set at a fall festival, but both were very minor parts of the story. I'm not sure if Halloween was even mentioned until halfway through the story.
The story itself did get off to rip roaring start, delving right into the murder mystery. It lost my interest pretty quickly when it immediately diverted into exploring the main character's background. It sounds like I would have enjoyed that more if I had read the previous books in the series. Vague spoiler ahead The main murder mystery had some interesting twists, but the resolution to it was a disappointment. Oh, well.
I love this series, and it just keeps getting better and better (if that's possible). I just love how The Inn is booming with new people, but what makes it all the more special is the love that Abby has found in her new friends. Who would have thought that the tragedy of losing her husband and son, could help her realize that you can move on, and though she could never forget, she has found a sense of peace with people who are now her extended family. With two murders solved with Abby's help, it is time to focus on all of the wonderful events that they have scheduled for the holiday season at the Inn. With the Inn and writing her new book keeping her extremely busy, she has so much to be thankful for, and I am so very happy for her. With Georgia realizing that her relationship with Tanner could be blossoming into something more, I hope that Abby will one day realize the same thing could be happening with Colt. I think that could be amazing!
This series is a quick read for me and I do like it for the most part. The characters are interesting and the author is good. The Inn is open and running and they are all dealing with the daily problems that entails. Still, Abby finds time to investigate the murder of a despicable bank president who had way too many people wanting him dead. I do wonder, though, how this impacts on her running an Inn, even though she has her friend to back her up. At one point in the story Abby was supposed to pick up a meat order from the butcher shop in the next town and stopped along the way to confront one of the murder suspects. No mention of whether the meat ever got picked up or how that impacted the Inn's dinner that night! We have two new characters introduced so we'll see how that works out in future books and is there romance in the air? I also like how the author is casting a long shadow still with Abby's husband's death and what was really going on in the San Francisco PD. I'll continue "snacking" on this series since they quickly fill a hole in my reading schedule
Abby Sullivan and Chief of Police Colt Wilder find the body of a man who had been missing for the past ten days at the beginning of Chapter 1 in this book. Wesley Hamilton had taken over the job of president of the Bank of Holiday Bay after his father's death. But Wesley's Scrooge-like practices had earned him many enemies in a very short time. One of the books Abby had written placed a victim's body in his own grave, so that is where she and Colt were searching when they found Wesley's body as well as another badly decomposed body of an adult male underneath the first one. Now they have two mysteries to solve. Also, guests at the Inn are reporting hearing noises just outside their rooms during the night. Is there a ghost, a wild critter who got in, or some other explanation? This is an entertaining series. I like the characters and the small Maine town setting.
We plodded through 3 books of getting the inn ready. We saw teasers for soft opening events. Did we actually get to see the inn finally open and how they coped with it? No. We jump forward 3 months for when the inn is already operational. It's as if there is a book or at least a novella missing.
I sometimes see the owner of the inn as what my granny used to call "pound wise and penny foolish." She doesn't think they can afford to hire another full time worker, so she spends who knows how much money to the contractor who brings in a dozen workers to turn the basement into an apartment for the new worker and his niece.
Yet for some reason I can't quite figure out, I plant to continue reading this series. I just wish the author would make more use of contractions, especially in dialogue. Her characters sound as if they are either androids, or not native speakers of English.
I can't get enough of this series, i lose a lot of sleep reading these books!! Abby and Georgia are doing great things at the Inn. And when Abby goes to the bank for business, she finds out someone is missing. Colt and Abby start the investigation and comes up with a super long list of suspects and all have great motives. When one is taken off the list, then two more are added. Colt is at a dead end for a time, then Abby is talking to people and getting pieces put together, Georgia goes on the internet and finds a whole lot. At the same time the Inn has a mysterious happening going on the guests keep telling Georgia about that has to be looked into. It all gets solved, but you have to read this book to find out.
Besides having instant internet the day she walked in, there is no mention of a business permit, OSHA inspections, commercial kitchen reg requirements etc? It's not exactly a realistic series which starts with remodeling for an Inn. Normally you can't just ask your friends to come over and help cook meals for paying guests. Where did Georgia get all the money she spent making cookies etc for town charity functions? She came there with essentially nothing. Why would the Inn owner subsidize that? It doesn't say. The stories are interesting and these are a quick read but am finding too much fault with literary license. Also the author doesn't seem to understand the use of contractions. Strange for a writer.
