i never want to think about vomit ever again in my life

As I read each volume of this series, I keep seesawing back and forth between whether I like it or am too annoyed by it. This volume has some lousy dialogue, pacing and transitions in addition to the protagonist being strung along by the women around him with sexual promises. But it also has some shocking developments, a moving sacrifice, and a cliffhanger that demands you read the next one.

I'm going to admit that it has me hooked for now and see where it goes next.

Avevo sfogliato il primo volume di Chainsaw Man in edicola quando uscì qualche mese fa: i disegni non mi avevano fatto impazzire e la storia mi era sembrata una brutta copia tamarra di Devilman per le nuove generazioni.



Passano i giorni e sempre più recensioni entusiaste al riguardo compaiono nel mio newsfeed qui su Goodreads, ma ancora non mi accingo ad acquistarlo.



Poi ieri mi chiama al telefono un caro amico del cui giudizio mi fido ciecamente da anni, condividendo praticamente gli stessi gusti musicali, cinematografici e fumettistici, e mi fa: "Ma lo stai comprando Chainsaw Man?".



Il tempo di fare quattro chiacchiere al riguardo e, stando già per strada, vado a procurarmi nella fumetteria più vicina i tre volumetti usciti in italiano per Planet Manga.



Leggo il primo numero e la sensazione è la stessa che avevo avuto sfogliandolo tempo prima, ma storia e protagonista hanno decisamente potenziale quindi forse non ho buttato i miei soldi.



Leggo Il secondo volume e lo trovo più o meno allo stesso livello del primo, i comprimari introdotti sono interessanti, la storia mi piace e diverte, però manca ancora qualcosa.
Infine leggo pure il terzo e rimango folgorato da un fulmine a ciel sereno quando, conclusa la trama iniziata nei primi due numeri, al consueto cocktail di ironia, azione ed ultraviolenza si aggiungono un paio di colpi di scena inaspettati e brutali che danno alla nuova storyline un vero e proprio inizio al fulmicotone con quasi tutto il cast di comprimari spazzato via senza pietà non appena finito di raccontarne il passato in una lunga sequenza di morti violente che colpisce il lettore al cuore ed allo stomaco come una vera e propria motosega.



E la scena del primo bacio di Denji è probabilmente quanto di più disgustoso, ed allo stesso tempo esilarante, che io abbia mai letto in un manga.



Le aspettative erano basse, ma qui ci sono tutti i numeri per un vero capolavoro.

Truculento, sopra le righe e stomachevole, ma pur sempre un capolavoro.

Still completely batty, over the top, cynical and bloody, volume 3 finishes one storyline and starts the next with a bang. Several, in fact. The craziness of the first two volumes is starting to settle in and we're starting to get a feel for the longer narrative. The art is gripping, but the quiet moments are actually better drawn than the action scenes which are sometimes quite hard to follow. Not sure where things are going to go from here, but unless vol 4 is a huge cop out, this book is going in a very different direction than other ensemble manga. Excited to see what happens next!

Our small band of devil hunters are trapped in a hotel! And they cannot get out before they kill Denji and give his heart to the powerful Gun Devil?

Plus new foes are showing up so how will Aki, Himeno, Power and Denji fight back agaisnt them?

So exciting!

There are some light-hearted moments but there are also some brutal fight scenes! So exciting!

Himeno cares so much for Aki and his safety!!!! T___T

The battle against the Samurai Sword Man is just so epic! I have no word for that!!!!

I-i don't know what to say... It happened so quickly. First of all, Aki worrying for Denji is the best thing! And also with power all 3 of them are finally like a family (? A very disrupted family.

The last things that happened had me in complete SHOCK. I can't believe how Fujimoto sensei thinks about that in the first place! I can't wait to keep reading this series and also pick up Fire Punch.

WHY WHY WHY WE ALREADY LOST HIMENO?? WHYYYYY IT CAN'T BE TRUE FUCK. I'm still without words.
And also that GUY?? With SWORDS???

This series is starting to pick up a bit. I really liked the drawings of the monsters they fight in this one. The backgrounds and human characters are a bit boring to look at.

The plot? Hmm, it seems pretty typical of this type of manga. There's demons everywhere, they have to fight them, there's a big bad demon that they need to work their way up to killing. The interactions between the characters are funny, in a highschool drama sort of way.

Not bad at all. I'll keep reading :)

Still waiting for the plot to get really good, though I’m starting to love Denji, Aki and Power. Aki’s fox demon is super cool!! As for the side characters, I'm still warming up to them. I don't trust Makima (I feel like she has the potential to become a villain), and Himeno..... a certain scene involving her in this volume was *concerning* (lmao). The fight scenes are only getting better though, so I'm eager to continue!

I knew I would have problems with this volume because it’s my least favorite part of the anime. Himeno starts out fairly strong in volume two, but she gets… gross and has massive pedophile vibes in this volume. I really don’t like what was done with her character in this series. It was a lot of missed potential.

Re-Read January 2023 and it's just as enjoyable.

5/5 Man I love this series. It is over the top horror action and a helping dose of comedy. Volume 3 wraps up the events involving the eternity demon at the end of the last volume. The blood and guts are constantly flowing and I had a number of moments were I literally laughed out loud. I also love Fujimoto's art.

Denji is a great protagonist and he kind of represents every horny teenage boy that's ever been down on their luck.

The volume kicks into overdrive in the last couple chapters with some new baddies introduced and a lot of oh F*@k moments. This volume ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I can't wait to get the next volume in April. The super sexy Himeno graces the cover of volume 3, I love her.

This series is so frustrating! I like the artwork and the story for the most part, but why does it seem half the cast exists simply to sexually exploit a teenager?? Hopefully with how this one ended the over sexualization of a 16 year old will cease. If not, I'm done. I probably wouldn't even read past this volume if I didn't already own the next one.

Anyway this volume was nasty. Real grimy, gory, and gross. And it's not gross because of the gore. It's because of the throw up.

Volume 3 covers chapters 17-25

Volume 3 wraps up the subplot of the last volume where the main demon hunting crew gets trapped in a haunted hotel and the only way to escape is to offer up Denji as a sacrifice to the Eternity Demon. The solution to the battle of endurance ends with an interesting conclusion. A conclusion that might bring the crew closer together in strange ways only to invite future disaster into their lives.

Volume 3 marks a good turning point for the series. It maintains the whacky comical vibe while introducing some darker elements into the story that isn’t afraid to make the characters pay for their mistakes with their lives. Overshadowed by the threat of countless demons on the loose is a conspiracy uprising going on in the background. An uprising that can bring more death and destruction than any regular old demon could ever dream of. This volume also changes up the simple motivations for some of the characters and puts further emphasis on the sacrifices they might have to make to accomplish the goals that are further out of reach than they thought.

I’m actually starting to feel sorry for Denji. He might be an annoying and shallow dope, but he’s clearly being strung along and emotionally blackmailed by the adults in his life. More and more people are leading him on and taking advantage of exploiting him. There’s a certain scene involving vomit in this volume that definitely made me feel bad for him.

Things are going in a darker direction and I’m ready for it.
