Fortune Academy #1

Fortune Academy: Year One

Rate this book

Welcome to Fortune Academy, a school where supernaturals can feel at home—except, I have no idea what the hell I am.

The last thing I remember is arriving at the massive gates with a Bounty Hunter staring me down. I have a feeling he was supposed to take me to the monster holding arena to fight and die. Instead, I'm Fortune Academy's newest student.

I can relate to the monsters in ways the other students can't. My mentor, who is way too hot for his own good, tells me my behavior is the result of my memory loss and that I'm just trying to identify with a past pain that I've buried too far to feel. I think he's wrong. I think the reason I can't relate to any of the students is because I'm one of the monsters they're trained to kill.

I don't fit into any of the supernatural cliques, but that doesn't stop me from collecting bullies. A brawny alpha shifter, a moody dark mage, and a playboy demi-god have decided to break me. They think I don't have any powers and that I was recruited by mistake. It'll be their funeral if they push me too far, because this girl isn't taking any of their shit.

My name is Lily Fallen, but don't let my pretty face fool you. I'm a monster in a school uniform and it's only a matter of time before I teach my bullies a lesson they won't forget.

Fortune Academy: Year One is the first of three novels in an upper YA/NA paranormal academy series. Expect a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance where there are five guys and no choosing required!

It was good. It wasn't extraordinary, but it wasn't a catastrophe either. An average tag is more than satisfactory.

We have dear ol' Lily. She is powerful (very, otherwise she wouldn't have been our POV, would she?).

Lily can't seem to remember her past life and her powers. One day she gets kidnapped to an Academy. There she is supposed to find the answer.

There are short chapters that run at a quick pace. Perfect if you are in for a relaxing read.

One major issue that I have to point out is that the entire plot is pivoted on her powers. Not so much on what she can do with them, but what are they exactly.

For the entirety of the novel, the reader is led by the nose into the never-ending land of perpetual teasingness

Basically, all the cards are played on her hidden ability. I guess that is important but let's not relay the entire fate of one fictional universe on her powers alone. Those creatures/humans had gone just fine without her assistance before she came into the scenery. I am confident that the moment of that revelation is overestimated.

But, whatever, it is a better read than most, so I guess,
give it a try.

This is not romance, it is abuse. I am honestly disgusted with how the harem treat the fmc. They use her as a toy for their pleasure and then treat her like garbage even after bonding with her. I have never read a book where the heroine was treated badly by her mates even after bonding. I kept hoping it would get better and it doesn’t. I kept hoping one of her mates would be worth the trouble, none of them are. I actually hate every single character in this series. It is tied for the worst book series I have ever read. Just awful.

This story had an interesting premise and a cover that drew me in, but it felt... short. The beginning is a bit slow and not a very 'satisfying' way to start the story in my eyes. There are many questions about what the protagonist is but the biggest one doesn't get answered and it feels like the story ended somewhere in the middle of a longer book. There are only sixteen chapters that feel short and not much actually happens apart from the little tense moments that are quickly resolved. I felt as if I was reading a shortened version of a longer book. There is barely any character development/ bonding between the characters and some just start acting 'out of character' at some points which seems very strange. The writing has an interesting style to it, with how the author describes things, but sometimes it's just hard to read certain paragraphs. Sometimes little things are missing in the descriptions where you for example read that a character is suddenly standing very close to another without having read that they moved. And some aspects in the plot just seem silly or cliche.
The book has 'Year One' in its title and the second one will be 'Year Two' but only three weeks have passed in the first book which was mainly the reason the book felt incomplete somehow. I wonder if an entire time skip of a year will happen in the second book which will make no sense as the premise of the plot is that the main protagonist has to bond with the other characters.
It was still an interesting read and I will read the second book in the hopes that it gets better as the premise seems nice. Overall, it's a shame that it felt so rushed and short.
But I still enjoyed it and can be read as a simple story to read in a day when you are bored and don't want to feel a certain sadness because of bad things that happen in stories. This one is just an easy and quick read that will sate your boredom for a bit.

I really wanted to love this. I was looking forward to it as I love the concept. I felt as though the first half of the book was super slow. There wasn’t enough character building, relationship connection and movement with the storyline. I almost gave up but pushed through. It got to mid point and picked up a bit. I got excited thinking this would skyrocket, but then the pace evened out. No big reveals. Minimal heat with the love interests, or suspected love interests. It was hard to tell sometimes because it was very hot and cold. Just a lack of connection. It finishes ok. If what happened with Kaito in the end didn’t happen I seriously would have rated this a 2 star at best. I’m hoping book 2 has more reveals, action and connection.

This book was super easy to get into. I really like the idea of these supernatural beings losing their memory and having to figure out who they are again.
I like our FMC, Lily, and really hope she continues to get stronger. She does a good job at not letting people boss her around but I hope she doesn’t change that just because of a hot guy. That would really disappoint me. If these men are supposed to be bonded to her then they definitely have a lot of groveling to do! I am also excited to see what other secrets there are in store for us readers in the next book. I wasn’t expecting that reveal at the end but it definitely makes sense!
I hope to see more powers in the next book! I definitely want to see more action as well!

I’ve read three books of this series, and I hate them.

All of Lily’s mates are servile to her, they manipulate her and lie to her, and use sex as a way to control her even after she says no.

They basically coerce her.

Although it would be great if there was both a male and female narrator for this book, this female narrator rocks at doing both.

There’s some things I don’t fully understand but I’m guess I will learn more in year two.

I can’t imagine being Lily, waking up with no memories and having to choose who to trust and move along with.

Love her sass and lack of filter and can’t wait to see more of it in year two.

Imagine sort of just waking up, having no idea what you are, where you come from, why you remember/know nothing and having to just navigate life, without knowing who you can trust … this is where we find Lily and I would not want to be here … at least so far. I expect as the story/series goes on, she’ll lead a more enviable life, but we’ll see.

When this book opens, I’m completely intrigued and instantly attached to Lily; before I can even register that there’s action and budding physical attraction that seems to promise romance.

It’s a very fast-paced book in an academy setting, shrouded in mystery, complete with mean girls and bullying, sexy shifters, shady teachers and … students fighting to the death, what?

Not wanting to share spoilers of any kind, I won’t say too much except that it was a very addictive read and I cannot wait to dive into book 2. Strongly recommend this series.

I do recommend first reading the same author’s ‘Seven Sins’ series though; it meant there were fun little things and references that made sense to me, but still remained mysteries to Lily.

No editing mistakes were noted.
No continuity issues found.
Character development is advanced.
World-building is utterly brilliant and all I want to do is get lost in more of Thorn’s books.

There’s no reason I can find to not give this ALL the stars.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Note: I have this book in print, ebook and audio! (Yes, I’m obsessed.) But my point is, I listened to this book and the narration totally added to the experience thanks to the super smooth voice, noting to have to adapt to … and this is coming from someone who generally cannot tolerate being read to. This narrator tells the story, doesn’t pronounce anything weird, is calming to listen to … complete perfection.

Okay soooooooooooooo........

I haven't seen a review yet to address some glaring issues with this book, so I'll point them out.

"I don't know who my father is. Probably Zeus, maybe Artemis" - Orion, a demigod. Another demigod is the daughter of Athena...

Artemis and Athena were both part of the 3 VIRGIN Goddesses.....so neither are birthing, or for the Artemis reference, FATHERING -anyone-. WTF??? (Hestia was the third Goddess FYI).

Next, this is 'year one' so you'd expect this story to take the course of an entire school year. Yeah, no. It lasts for about 9 weeks. That's all the time references we're given. She gets orientation, 3 weeks later of bs, boom thing happens, boom 3 weeks later and it's apparently year two.

There are gaps in the story and things brought up that aren't even touched on really. It's a hot mess to say the least. Lily pretty much sucks, we haven't had much time with the guys to really know what they're like but so far, they suck.

It sucks. Period.

Exciting new series!

This was my first time reading this author and I loved it! Lily awoke one day with no memory of where she came from or who/what she was. Waking alone and covered in blood it was sheer luck she found her way to safety and a type of family that took in supernatural beings like herself with no clue who they are. If only she hadn't trusted them....after all in one night she learned it's all a lie. Those she considered friends and family were the opposite and all it took was one hot bounty hunter coming into the bar to show her the truth. All that remains is learning what she truly is. Escaping with the bounty Hunter to a place called Fortune Academy she deals with a new level of mean girls and cliques. She just wants to gain her memories and know what she is. Yet For some reason the two that know the answers won't tell her.....yet. Alliances made, trials endured....it's she what the prophecy foretold? An exciting start to this new series! I can't wait for book two!!!

Lily is secretly sent to Fortune Academy has a prophecy predicted that she'll save the world. Too bad she doesn't know who or what she is, and the only person who knows is not willing to tell her. Moreover, she gains enemies as soon as she enters the school grounds, and three of the guys who are supposed to be her mates hate her and the other two are unattainable.

This story left me quite confused. The beginning is intriguing, but the more the story progress the duller it gets. There are no real reasons why some of her mates hate her, and she accepts everything willingly without trying to fight. One of the persons who brought her to the academy knows who she is but won't tell, and Lily just accepts it? It's weird. Moreover, when we find out who she is, there are still parts of the story missing that don't make much sense.

Beautiful writing, easy to slide into the world.

With the beginning of this story, and the way the world was built, the characters introduced and the scene was set, this book didn't need long or descriptive backgrounds or history.

Our FMC has forgotten everything when we meet her at the start and through the course of this book we follow her POV on her path to discover who she is.

As a result, I felt like I lived in this world alongside her which made this very easy to follow and settle into.

We meet the first of her Virtues (mates) and get a feeling for how their relationships begin and I absolutely cannot wait to see how they progress!

The spice is slow burn in this book, but so worth the wait, as it doesn't feel like it limits the progress of the underlying themes and story.

Diving straight into book 2 asap!

I had to dnf at say 80%.
* bullying from the mmc's for no specific reason
* mind control
* fuzzy storytelling

I'm bummed, but I read reviews from the next two books and the mmc's don't seem to get any better.
Gotta bow out of this one.

Good Book

Good Start to the series, gives you background on main characters but not enough to have you not wanting to return for book two. Starts out as a slow burn for the spicy scale i would say book one had 2 chilis for spice.

I read the book because I was intrigued by the cover. Also, recently, I have developed unhealthy obsession with reverse harem novels. Some scenes were WOW, others small disappointment. I'm glad that I did not put down the book as I like the rest of the books.
Lily woke up covered in blood and without memories of her previous life or who her parents are. She only knows she is supernatural, but she doesn't known what kind. She found safety with Mother of Monsters. She plans to find out who she is, but before she does it. She is kidnapped and sent to the Fortune Academy, where she has to kill or be killed in order to find out her powers. In academy she meets her loves interests, but there are nearly no sexual scenes which I did not expected from reverse harem novel and there is no real romance either. Academy has various cliques. it was interesting reading about them. Then of course there are the mean girl with her minions. Some things make it different than the other books, but the cover looks similar to other school/academy reverse harem novels. There is no real romance, just attraction between main characters.
If you have liked other reverse harem novels with similar book covers from different authors then this book is definitely worth checking out! 📚

Aham, not bad. Not bad at all.
The guys are amusing and interesting, each of them in an uniquely different way.
Kinda fast paced attraction, fast burning, I guess, and I’m still searching for the bully and the enemies mentioned in the synopsis, I only read “rivalry”/power dynamic bickering, unfortunately.
The universe is really interesting, and I completely loved Lily: she has charisma, a strong personality and a really powerful will. She’s nice. Her story really got me greedy for more heheheh.
I’m so curious about her one-third part, good part(?) of herself… anyway, I’m hungry to know. What Danny and Kaito actually truly are, beside their positions and professions. The prophecy part was a really turn off for me, but I kinda of accepted it, lmao.
Looking forward to Lily’s growing connection to her Virtues, or Mates.
Btw, I thought her friendship with Olivia was so fast built, like… the trust and the closeness they got for each other at the same day they met? Deciding to become roomies so suddenly… weird as fuck. Not a fucking chance IRL, gurl.
And naming a fucking Demi-God TREVOR????? LOLOLOLOLOL Such a shitty name, man. That’s so north-american-jock vibe. EW EW EW. I just can’t take this seriously.
Hm… uhn… umm… can I say that the sex scene was really bad? Because it was. Like, pretty bad. No excitement, no horniness, whatsoever. Nothing, at all, nada, completely empty of feelings. I don’t know, hope the sex scenes get better, because it was so disappointing and… meh. Really meh. Extremely meh. My girl deserves better, and as a reader and fan of the series, me too.
Orion’s sudden confession at chapter 15 was really out of nowhere lol, I literally got 🙂 what-… okay then?
Logan’s outburst too… dude, what the hell? Chill out, for gods’ sake. He literally looked like a completely different person. Ew. But also, hm! Because when he was all puppy like with her I was… alrighty, this is my man, I guess. Ugh! My thing for wolfy shifters is messing me up!! I love it!!!
Hm… I like Kaito. He seems mature, probably because of his age, but he’s so lighthearted and sweet, like with his research and when comforting Lily, he acts like a puppy. Cute!
Definitely wants more of Danny, heheheh. Lily is so protective over him, and that’s so adorable!
Hendrik is a confusingly mess for me. I don’t how to feel about him. He’s so… infuriatingly petty but at the same time he’s a good leader and strong and interesting? I don’t like him. But I do like him. I don’t know!
I want more of Orion, he’s such a charismatic guy, I need more interactions with him.
Overall, I quite enjoyed this book, really. It was fun, entertaining and interesting. I binged read it and didn’t even noticed, lol. Gonna start the second book right this second. Ba-bye!

What do you do when you awaken in an alley way not remembering anything . You find out you are a supernatural and you were called to the bar where you start to work not knowing what you are . Until the day a bounty hunter finds you and takes you away . You realize that you are more but you still don't know what you are . You end up at an super natural academy and you are their new student . Lily Fallen has to figure out what she is and in the mean time she is not going to let the other super naturals push her around . They may end up with a big surprise .
The characters are vast and varied in this book . Lily is a sweet girl , with blonde hair and gorgeous eyes but she really doesn't know what she is . At first she was kind of hard to like cause honestly she whined a lot . But as you get into the book you see her grow and realize that she is more and even though she screws up there are others there to help her. The cliques in the academy remind me of the ones that are in high school . They are all out for themselves and will hold back the one person that is different and they can't figure out what or who they are. The men in this book are oh so smoking hot and sexy you just want to be with them all in one way or another . You will love them trust me .
I sat down and started this book I was having a bit of trouble at the beginning to get into the story . The first couple of chapters were kind of slow but as I read the story picked up and I couldn't put the book down . There are Demigods , muses , dark mages . werewolves and so much more in the academy . We find out there is more going on in the Academy then meets the eye . The author mixes each genre in very nicely . The characters are well written and you will love them and hate them at the same time . This is a good first book in the series and yes there are a few typos but you hardly notice them . There is a sex scene at the end of the book but I will say its not that graphic . I am thinking that your late teenagers would like this book and so will you . So if you want a good read for your long weekend coming up check it out

Anyone who has read a lot of my reviews will have noticed that I tend to be generous, and may have wondered what on Earth it would take for me to rate something as a single star. This; this is what it would take.

As background, Amazon recommended this to me on the basis of previous purchases, other reviews aren't terrible, it was on super-cheap special offer, and it's really short, so I figured I didn't have much to lose by trying it. I wasn't expecting too much, but, wow, was that an overestimate. The only saving grace is that short length - it's part one of a trilogy that would fit together to make one not very lengthy novel.

Okay, so the plot. A girl (she's about 18, I think) with vaguely Mary Sue powers goes to a school for teens with supernatural abilities, where she discovers that she's destined to save the world - but only if she can persuade five specific people to simultaneously become her boyfriend. Not a great start, conceptually, but still the sort of thing I'd normally end up giving 3 stars to. But there are two big problems, each of which knock something off.

For one, there are actual spelling and grammatical mistakes in it - the sort of word substitution that most spellcheckers won't catch. I mean, blimey, none of us are perfect, but I tend to expect more from a published book. Although maybe that's just me.

More seriously, the characters are flat as pancakes, with even the heroine not coming across as at all well-developed. They might as well all be cyphers, and there isn't much development of the world they inhabit, either. When, at the conclusion of the book, the heroine identifies one of the five people she's looking for and has sex with him, there's no emotional connection at all and no reason for us to be invested. I think they've literally only spoken to each other twice prior to this scene and that was on a completely different subject.

I mean, apparently people like this book, so if the author's making money from it, more power to her. She must be doing something right. But, when it comes to me... seriously, Amazon, you need to improve your recommendation algorithm.
