I quite recently watched ‘The Bourne Identity’ from 2002. And it struck me that technology showed in this movie is so different from the one we have around these days. Old CRT monitors, people making calls from telephone booths, and the few cell phones that were there looked ridiculously obsolete. It struck me because it was after all not so long ago, merely 13 years. And yet, everything changed.
Personally I find these rapid changes fascinating. It is something new, something the world has never experienced before, and most importantly, it’s not just about technology and computers – it affected literally all areas of our lives: mobile devices are everywhere, we function within the Internet, we communicate through social media, that’s how we get to know each other, present ourselves, etc. I would even dare say that it affected the way we think. It is hard to imagine what will happen in the next, and next-next decade if the progress continues to be that fast.
I mention all this because this is one of the main ideas of the novel ‘Tangents’, and one of the things that thrilled me about it.
The idea itself is pretty brilliant. Take four people from different times and places, and move them to another place: a weird and mysterious world that clearly is not our reality. They don’t know where they are or why they are there. They have to discover it, and we follow them in their journey, knowing just as little as the characters.
There are a few things I find intriguing about it:
First off, the mysterious another world. It is not easy to guess or speculate what it is and the reader is kept in the dark about it. The author just shows us more and more of the impossible, scary and beautiful pictures, giving no clear answers. It is good, because it keeps you in suspense, makes you turn the pages over and over, grab the bits that are given, trying to draw some conclusions. It’s impossible to put this book away easily.
Secondly, the mystery of why they are there, what happened to them, what forces ripped them out of their lives and threw them into this place. Is there a reason behind it? Why them? What do they have in common? Another thing that the reader has to discover along with the characters.
Finally the confrontation of people from different times, which I have already mentioned. So we have a guy from 2001, two people from the mid 2000s, and a girl from 2013. This is just a little more than one decade apart, so the characters can easily communicate – they all use computers and cell phones, know who Michael Jackson is, and yet the differences between them are tangible and come out in their conversations. The author clearly has fun playing it, she does it with humor and good taste, and the reader also has fun reading about it. At least the reader me.
As much as I found this novel really pleasurable, at some point I realized that I didn’t get drawn into it as much as I should, given all the fascinating stuff I just mentioned. I was even slightly weary, and it made me wonder why. The answer came pretty easily: I missed character drama – something that I seek in books most of all. Complex relationships, conflicting emotions, hard decisions, and all the dirty and messy stuff about people – those things can never make me tired. Well, you won’t find it here. I would lie if I said that there’s no character drama in the novel. Each of the characters has their personal story and they are quite dramatic, somehow however this particular point of the novel did not speak to me. The stories seem tame, somewhat biographical, not something that thrills. Similarly, I wasn’t drawn to any of the characters in particular. They are all okay, likeable, but I didn’t take any of them to my heart.
But then, you can’t have everything in one novel. The way I see it, ‘Tangents’ is not about character drama (at least not yet). It’s mostly about the mystery, it is a plot-driven fantasy more than anything. It has a very interesting, original idea, is well-written, well-structured and reads smoothly. And this really is enough to have a few enjoyable evenings with a book.
Volume one of ‘Tangents’ ends with a discovery: one of our crucial questions is finally answered, and the answer is not disappointing. It surprises, makes sense, is a good climax and a good breakpoint. But there are still many things we yet have to discover. I can only imagine how the author will explain me the world that she has created. So I look forward to volume two and I definitely hope she won’t leave us without answers.
Four uniquely incomparable people, Rick, Anna, Dan and Matylda each wake up in a separate part of a mysterious forest, unaware of their new surroundings, confused and in a state of panic after falling to sleep in their own worlds beforehand. It is not long before each of their paths cross and they soon discover they are all from different times, cities and even counties. Anna is from 2013, Rick is from 2001, Dan is from 2005 and Matylda is from 2004 and they have no clue about why they have all woken up in these endless woods with the unbearably hot sun that shows no signs of retiring. They decide to stick together in the hope that they can find a way out before it gets dark. In their journey for survival against many attacks from gigantic insects, enormous and deadly snakes and trees that come alive that try to strangle them with their roots. They soon discover they need to find refuge that will protect them from the strange forces of Mother Nature before they can figure a way out of this strange sphere without losing their lives.
On their journey to safety they all learn a little about one another as each of them have a distinctive back story. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that each and every one of them seem to be experiencing some kind of turmoil with their loved ones. Anna eventually develops a devastating theory why they are all there and convinces the others that they all share links to overwhelming events in history that will soon take place and they need to get out of this place ASAP. But their biggest obstacle is how to get back to their lives in time to prevent the people they love from what is about to take place.
A highly entertaining and addictive story with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing why these four uniquely different people have been brought together with an unexpected and breathtakingly good ending that will prompt any reader to wait anxiously for the second instalment.
One reason I have given Agatha Rae's exciting novel a five-star rating is that it far surpasses the perimeters of popular fiction. It is most definitely superior to most crime fiction appearing today - and also more readable because it is written in a concise style that pinpoints motif, scene and character. This is unusually well done. The manner in which Agatha Rae manages to transcend the popular novel is quite intriguing, in fact; for the author accomplishes this difficult task by erasing the border between so-called 'low cultre' and 'high culture'. The precise diction and tight style of "Tangents" may deceptively suggest that the novel is an 'easy reader' and meant for entertainment. It is certainly entertaining, but also stimulates the reader's response to a quite subtle sociocultural critique immanently present in the fabric of the work. The four characters meeting by accident in a kind of collective subconscious - which also appears as an alien planet - engage the reader's interest from the very beginning since they have problems , emotional and moral, that we can identify with. We realize with them that something serious is lacking in our and their lives, and the access to an understanding of the roots of these problems must be sought on a subliminal level. Hence the not so accidental meeting of the four characters who come from different places in the world 'above' and also from different time zones. They have had to deal with external social pressures and unresolved mental inhibitions that have turned their lives into a kind of trivial pursuit. To get out of it they need to go through what used to be called 'initiation' and that I would call liberation and enlightenment. Do they manage to choose and achieve liberation and fulfilment in their lives? That's for the reader to find out - so read it and be enriched! Jorgen Veisland.
How can I write a review while I’m wordless? That is a question… Knowing the first book of Agatha Rae, Oenone, I knew from the beginning that it will be a page-turner. To make it even more intriguing, before I started to read the book I had not viewed any comments about it, although I was extremely curious. I wanted to have a clear start, not influenced with recommendations or possible spoilers from other reviewers. I knew it will be a great book, but I was mistaken… it turned out to be the kind of book that (I can seriously say) I have never read before! This is the book, that after reading you have so many emotions swirling around inside of you that the words as fantastic, incredible or amazing seem banal. Indescribable or unimaginable are closer but still not good. All previous reviewers wrote such good comments- all I agree with so I will not mention the great style, diverse characters or the enigmatic time travel. Apart of the unexpected twists of action Tangents has something more- for me it is the rollercoaster of emotions- while reading, my feelings jumped from excitement and mystery to overwhelming sympathy and compassion, and to end up with bewilderment and even more anticipation what will happen next. That book is one of a kind and now I can barely wait for the second part. Please, please, please Agatha- write faster! I want more :)
”The view was amazing; two gigantic moons were hanging above the skyline, one was visibly smaller, it was probably further away. They lit the fields and forests giving the wheat and the sequoias a mysterious silver shade. It seemed there were millions of stars above them, some of them were creating a galaxy-like shape, which looked like a thick rope in the sky.” (Tangents p. 223).
Tangents by the Polish author Agatha Rae, is a thrilling book about four different people who by some mysterious reason end up in a forest, somewhere. They fell asleep and when awake they realised that nothing was the same. All they thought was real suddenly turns upside-down, making them doubt everything around them and at the same time making them consider their own lives; their mistakes, the what-could-I-have-done-differently aspects of their lives. The core of the novel can be said to be: do not take anything for granted, you never know what you have until it is gone, however hollow this phrase may seem.
Agatha Rae is a truly skilful author, who manages to capture the reader’s interest, forcing him or her to keep on reading until the very last page. The characters come alive, lifting from the pages, entering the reader’s conscience. One feels what the characters are experiencing in the novel, and one cares; feeling sympathetic at one point and frustrated at another; condemning flaws in character and at the same time cheers for their victories.
The novel explores feelings and situations from the everyday life, which we all can relate to, thus making the recognition factor of the novel outstanding. Rick experiences a crisis at a bar when some adolescents are making fun of the fact that an old lady got raped. He gets appalled by the youths’ ignorance and the fact that no one else in the bar reacted to their behaviour:
”What they were really doing, was showing they don’t care, that they don’t give a fuck, that they have no respect for people. It’s the first step. The ignorance.” (p. 105)
By inserting up-to-date issues such as this one, Rae creates a trustworthy novel. From day to day we all hear news of people video filming accidents rather than making themselves helpful and this behaviour makes one contemplate who the worst are; the ones doing misdeeds or the ones passively standing by watching, doing nothing?
Rae’s ability to build up tension and to create shifts in setting is an additional strength of hers. As a reader one gets lulled into the ”safety” of everyday life, just to be cruelly awakened by the forest and all that it entails. One goes from love, disrespect, cruel parents, a disheartened teenage girl, to horror and adventure, making one feel an adrenaline rush as the characters run for their lives. The novel ends in a “what?!-are-there-no-more-pages-left” state of mind, making the reader yearn for more because there are so many questions to be answered; why are Rick, Dan, Anna and Matylda there, why them, what is the common nominator between these people, and why did this happen now and perhaps the most intriguing question of them all; what does the title Tangents really mean? I have a pretty good idea of the meaning and perhaps you will too, once you have read the novel…
”I would strongly recommend this novel to anyone who loves the combination of drama, suspension and adventure. If you liked the TV-series Lost then you will absolutely love Tangents.”
It took me a long time to figure out what to write in the following review of “Tangents” by Agatha Rae as I did not want to repeat all those great opinions one may come across on Goodreads or Amazon but I cannot agree more with every single prise written by Agatha’s fans. The first thing about Agatha’s style I would like to comment on, are her language skills. They are truly remarkable and although she is not a native speaker, she surely is a deft user of the English language. Once you dig into the book, the linguistic abundance of descriptive expressions makes you want to devour the whole story at once. Agatha is perfect with the grammatical aspects of the language, which sometimes appear to be tricky and confusing for many native speakers. All of the above-mentioned elements allowed Agatha to create a special kind of flow that gives the book linguistic naturalness. Ok. Now it is time to talk about the story “Tangents” is freaking awesome!! It is a real page-turner. The title of the book is the first detail that catches readers’ attention, as it is not straightforward or obvious. You just look at the cover and begin to wonder what the book might be about. Then you read the first page and…you are gone. The world portrayed in “Tangents” simply absorbs you. And this is how your journey begins. What makes the book so amazing is the fact that your travel not only in space but also in…time! Huge applause for Ms Rae for this idea. All of the characters are multi-layered and so complex that it is impossible to feel bored with any of them. I love the diversity and originality of their backgrounds, sometimes extreme and surprising but always making you eager to follow them. It is incredibly rare to come across a book that combines so many great elements – flawless language, great and incredibly interesting story, and complex and original characters, yet Agatha Rae did it. And she did it perfectly. I can guarantee that every reader will be taken aback by Agatha’s ideas for the plot – I felt excited after discovering the rareness of the world Agatha created for them, the adventures they had, the difficulties and dangers lurking for them in the darkness, forests…I love it all. Someone smart said that “reading a good book is like taking a journey”, the thing I may add to this brilliant quotation is that the journey is even better with a good guide. Agatha seems to be one of the best. Love, fear, loss, drama and adventure – if you are looking for these then “Tangents” is a must-read for you.
Agatha Rae does a magnificent job with “Tangents Vol. I,” a book that narrates the story of four strangers who meet under weird circumstances and who embark on an adventurous journey together.
The story will not fail to grab the readers' attention from page one until the very end and it will leave them waiting impatiently for Vol. II.
Rae adds a lot of the elements needed to write a great story worth reading. The story has a good balance of suspense, drama and also some humor, which makes it a must-read.
Something that will also grab the readers' attention are the back stories of each character. They are all tremendous stories that perhaps help to explain a little why these people from all the population in the world, were destined to cross paths under those circumstances.
The struggles of each character will soon make the readers feel identified with at least one of them, which is another reason to read the book.
The great story-telling that Rae uses makes the book easy to read and understand. With a little over 270 pages, the reading is never tedious and it keeps the reader turning page after page without having to go back for having difficulties with the story.
Although the storyline goes back and forth, with Rae narrating the present and then going back to the characters' lives as they were before meeting each other, this never affects the reading nor makes it confusing. On the contrary, it gives the reader a more in-depth understanding of each character.
Rae does a great job at maintaining control of the storyline despite of the changes it goes through.
Rae's book will leave the readers to the edge of their seat from beginning to end with its great story-telling and characters that will not fail to intrigue the readers as the story progresses.
“Tangents. Vol. I” is a book that does not feel like you are actually reading a book, but you are watching a thriller movie. It is easy to put a face to each of the characters and the readers will soon find themselves attached to each one of them.
The mystery, adventure and drama of “Tangents Vol. I” guarantees it to be a worldwide success.
Ana,Dan and Rick they are fell asleep in their bad and wake in unknown woods in different part of the woods and in different time, but that is not so weird. The weird thing is that coming from different time, all of them have a life back there in their time, but now in the Woods they are in some adventurous surviving. To survive they stick together and discovers that strange new place.Moving they realized that day lasts too long and if days are so long then how long are nights? Two moons on sky at night is marvelous view, but the dangerous creatures are everywhere...They found plane and stay for awhile there, but someone start throwing something on plane as stones, and what is it? Are they safe?Is a woman,Matilda she is also like them awakened in woods. They are four now.
Where they are, on some other planet,in some parallel world or in the other dimension? Why they? Will they turn back in their reality or will stay there forever?
Incredible book. The pages are turn them self. The characters had adventure in completely other place -unknown for them and for readers too, that keeps readers wonder and asking questions till the end,but characters have their lives as everyone fulfilled with concerns and problems and that brings drama in the book. Packed like this Tangents is full enjoyment. I enjoy so much read this book, so couldn't express my thoughts know.So I could tell you just that character are so real well described and the plot is simply great it's remaind me to popular TV series LOST,which I love so much.
This book was provided by the author in exchange of honest review. Previous posted on Books are my life
This is Agatha Rae second book. I have read the first one and decided to read “Tangents” as well. I knew that it would be a really good title. I read a lot about “Tangents” on Agatha Rae’s Facebook page, and totally couldn’t wait for it. When I was reading the quotes from the book on her wall, my hunger was becoming bigger and bigger. I expected MYSTERY, ADVENTURE and a little bit of DRAMA. Did I get it?
As I said this is the second book which I read written by A. Rae. The first one was “Oenone” and enjoyed it very much. There was a lot of good reviews so I was pretty sure, that I will not lose my time on “Tangents”. I don’t want to spoil the book, so I just can say that the plot of the book takes place everywhere around the world including a parallel one, with people who absolutely don’t know each other. They had a lot of choices and decisions to make, with weird things to happening around.
I read “Tangents” in one go. When I didn’t have time to start another chapter I was angry and I was like an addict a fix. I was surprised a lot of times, I was thrilled, I was sad, I was amused, and all of it because of “Tangents”! Now I need to wait for “Tangents” vol 2 and again I will be thinking what’s gonna happen with those people, what kind of story is written for them and finally how the novel ends. I hope there is a happy end, of course. I can totally recommend this book and this author!
Is there anything better than a thrilling plot, interesting characters, satisfying ending and quality writing? No. I must admit that I went through a lot of books that lacked those elements. People tend to rate some books way too high these days but it's not the case with “Tangents”. If you really want something more, a real gem – here it is. Reach out and take it, read it, give yourself up to the charm of an amazing world created by extremely talented Agatha Rae. I admire every author who can bring to life a character I will like and care about. Now, how about four of them? “Tangents” won't let you go. I won't give away too much details but in this book you will find an impressive palette of emotions. You will find this novel moving, fascinating, and, for sure, thrilling. The plot is complex and the mystery won't let you leave the book alone for too long. The author's humour is charming and her observations about certain things are funny. Some quotes will stay in reader's mind for a long time. You can tell Agatha Rae put her heart and soul into this novel, and that alone is a good reason to reach for her works
I'm a huge fan of mysteries, suspense and psychological puzzles in books, movies and television shows. I was a huge fan of the show Lost with it's odd array of characters whose lives had intersected in very unforeseen and minute detailed ways!
The same thrill I had while watching the show, I felt while reading this story! Wow! I do not wish to give spoilers, and plus I'm not sure I could give it justice if I tried...Lol but I will same that there are four very different, yet appealing characters that as a reader you will grow to become interested in.
They are placed in strange circumstances and the story is told by the author in the present as well as visiting each of the character's lives. So there's that puzzle for the reader! Lol How and why are these characters connected and how and why were they out of all others chosen?!
Well written, interesting characters, gripping plot with twists and turns, drama and adventure...the author has created a vibrant world that will keep the reader hooked!
Tangents is a captivating and suspenseful novel that leaves its audience hearts racing and on the tips of their toes. I greatly enjoyed how all the characters were described and how they interacted with one another. The way Agatha Rae is able to present the past of each of them and describe their reactions to the events that transpire is truly impressive. Furthermore, the transition between story lines was done gracefully and left you craving to find out more. Every character was unique and well-written, and their relatability is the factor that will, undoubtedly, draw you in. One of the most powerful impacts a novel can have on you occurs when it is identifiable and relatable, and I am happy to tell you that this is what Tangents does. I commend Rae's phenomenal work with this book. It’s a gripping, mysterious and intriguing novel that I have been recommending to all my friends. If you are looking for a refreshing take on a popular genre, then this book is most certainly for you.
This book is amazing, I simply love it, and Agatha Rae has done it again! I loved her book "Oenone", and I wanted to check out "Tangents", and it blew me away. It's a nerve wrecking story, and you are hooked frome the first page. Follow Rick, Anna, Dan and Matylda in this weird place, from the moment they got there (and even before that too) and see how they try to survive, and will they find a way back home?
Everything in this place is turned up side down, and everything is new to our four heroes. Hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did :D
I liked this book a lot and once I started it I couldn't put it down. I don't want to give away details because I loved wondering where the intricate descriptions of a new magical world were taking me. Then I wondered just why I was suddenly following regular people in their daily lives in such detail. Toward the end of the book, it all started to come together, with a surprising conclusion. I want other readers to experience the same joy in discovery that I had, so please read this book! This would be a great selection for a book club discussion.
This is one of those books that grabs you from the first few pages. It's a complex story of love, loss, fear, journeys and travel in time. The story crosses the lives of several people who are inexplicably brought together in another time and place. I don't usually read this type of book, but I'm so glad I gave this one a try. I cannot wait for the follow up book so I can read more of this complex, intriguing story.
This book had me hooked after a few pages. It's a story about several people that ends up in an unexpected place and in another time. It's a story of love and fear but also tremendous loss. A story well written and that intrigues the reader, at least me. I loved it. I hope there will be more stories like this from the author.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Tangents! I seriously could not put the book down. I loved the characters and the journeys they went on. Truly a mesmerizing read with a surprising ending. I highly recommended this book even if you are not much of a reader like myself this book will have you on edge from beginning to end.
Agatha Rae has crafted a magnificent work with some of the most relatable human characters I’ve seen in modern literature! From the first few pages you will be kept engaged with the desire to know what fates tie the likes of Rick, Anna, Dan and Matylda together. I urge everyone to give Tangents Vol. I a read. You won’t be disappointed.
If you're looking for a book that will draw your attention and hold you tight to it from the very first to the last page, this is the book for you! Apart from adventurous and dramatic aspects, this book asks important questions about our own lives, because the main characters' stories reflect our own, readers' lives, they go through the same tribulations and face the same problems that people who read "Tangents", and it makes the story even more gripping. Because despite it being set in a weird, empty, unfriendly (to say the least) surroundings, it feels very real and authentic. Give "Tangents" a chance, you won't regret it!
This was one of those books from beginning to end that you just can't put down. The book starts out with Rick and his waking up in the middle of a forest. We have no idea where he is or why, and then we learn his back-story. The whole book is this way-- characters waking up in the middle of the forest and then learning more about them, and then them all eventually meeting up. It is intriguing, a mysterious, and clever.
The end is something that I didn't expect either, which made this story a five star worthy novel.
I have been following Agatha Rae from the beginning. I read "Oenone" and quite enjoyed it. But her "Tangents" is absolutely brilliant. The four characters are amazing and the plot is thrilling. I really recommend this book.
I was recommend this book by a friend and once I started to read it I coudnt put it down and cannot wait to read the next book, loved the story line and the characters in the story. Please dont make us wait to long for the next installment :)
A great book, a wonderful story full of drama, adventure, and hope! You can't put it away, I myself read it on the go! It's fun, it's scary, it's provocative, it's fantastic! I highly recommend it!
Wyobraźcie sobie, że budzicie się w ogromnym lesie, a nad Waszymi głowami krążą nienaturalnie duże owady. I spotykacie czwórkę równie zdezorientowanych, nieznajomych osób.
Oh my, why didn't I get the second volume right away?
I loved the complexity of characters, how sometimes the unreasonable became reasonable. The mysterious part is lively depicted, you can easily see it. The mix of different story lines and reasons and problems, is so well combined. It makes this book rare and fresh. Tangents kept me in suspene, especially through the mysterious action parts. It was really hard to put this book away!
This isn't a book I would normally pick up and I don't really care for the whole time travel thing. However this was a very entertaining and fun read. All the characters were well defined - each person's story was great to read and left little to question. I love how detailed all the characters background story and how connected I felt to them.
I was immediately into this book with just the first chapter I was hooked. I needed to know what was going to happen next and could not put the book down until I finished it. I was amazed how much emotion jumped off the pages. It's usually hard for me to feel the emotions in the characters but not in this book. It was really easy to feel every feeling everyone had and I loved that.
After reading the ending I really want the sequel- like now! I hope Agatha Rae is a really fast writer because I don't know how I'm supposed to just sit here and wait. This will be torture!
