The Dark Side #3-4

Two Kingdoms & One Apocalypse

Rate this book
Book 3 & 4 together...

Two Kingdoms
I'm getting a little tired of completing my goals, only to have the bar raised too substantially for me to transition at a productive pace...
I started off as a sad little ghost with an impossible crush on four really hot, Gothic guys with some attitude problems. Now I'm The Apocalypse, they're the Four Horsemen, and Lucifer is my fucked up daddy. Now my additional goals look like this?
Goal #9: Make a deal with the Devil without getting cheated, manipulated, or tricked.
Goal #10: Make my boys love me and take over the world...okay...so maybe just that first part. That second part sounds like it could take too much ambition, and I just don't have the drive for that.
Goal #11: Make cookies.
Goal #12: Call dibs on my favorite color.
Goal #13: Find out if my siblings or my father killed me and my boys...

****

One Apocalypse
The life goals have stacked up since I started this journey as a sad, lonely little ghost. I’m not sure how things escalated so quickly from trying to be seen and heard, to bearing the weight of the world on my vain little shoulders.
As a result, my goals have gotten a little more serious…
Goal #14: Learn to take a hit without breaking or suffering some type of death.
Goal #15: Decide once and for all if I’m going to save or destroy the world. I’m not sure why people put this sort of responsibility on hell-spawn like me.
Goal #16: Practice my evil laugh, because all hell-spawn need a good evil laugh.
Goal #17: Find and kill all the unicorns. Mwahahahahaha.
Goal #18: Live to enjoy forever with the guys I sacrificed all my memories to save.
Goal #19: No matter what, they don’t get to die. Or I really will be THE Apocalypse.
We’re the most screwed up collection of antiheroes the world has ever seen, because the only thing that makes me want to save the world is knowing I could lose my boys forever if I don’t. It’s one HELL of a love story, you know?

Kristy Cunning always loves a good laugh, and lives and breathes the emotions of the characters she becomes attached to.

Though she came from a family of musicians, she has zero abilities with instruments; she sounds like a strangled cat when she sings; and her dancing is downright embarrassing. Just ask anyone who knows her. Her creativity rests solely in the written word. Her family is grateful that she gave up her quest to become a famous singer.

Kristy Cunning is one of the pen names C.M. Owens writes under.

[IMPORTANT NOTE: it is late, I am exhausted, and still processing, so there's a very good chance I could end up scrapping this review and changing my opinion by tomorrow morning, but I need to get my thoughts out of my head before I pass out, so bear with me, 😂]

So, I have to admit, I feel a bit conflicted here.

The first two books of this series started out so damn strong, but these last two have left me feeling a bit disappointed by comparison. Don't mistake me, I still very much enjoyed Two Kingdoms and One Apocalypse very much, but Two Kingdoms (aka: book 3) felt so aimless/all over the place at times; One Apocalypse got much better, but that bittersweet ending left me feeling conflicted for spoilery reasons; and the relationship between the 4 boys and Paca had this unbearable tension to it throughout most of these last 2 books that never felt fully resolved (again - I get why, and the bittersweet ending and POVs of the guys in book 4 sorta offset a lot of said tension, but not all of it)...

Basically, while I still enjoyed the ride CM took me on, it wasn't the ride I expected after those first two books, and that makes me a little sad. So this series is still such a fun read, but is it as strong as Mindf*ck? Sadly, no.

I will say that while I personally loved Paca, I can see certain types of readers finding her unbearably frustrating and maybe even a little insufferable at times 😅 - and a part of me gets that, although I personally don't feel that way. I guess my threshold for the antics of vain, sometimes immature and mostly crazy heroines is a lot higher than others. If anything, I find the combination of unhinged and vulnerable endearing.

I loved her four horsemen as well, even if I wanted to shake the ever loving fuck out of them at times over the course of this series - mostly for Paca's sake. They really did not deserve her half the time. Our girl goes through so much, and there were moments when I really just wanted those boys to take better care of her emotionally than they did, to fucking appreciate her better (I was always right there with her when she called them out on their bullshit), but that's definitely the hopeless romantic in me talking. Those boys are emotionally constipated for sure (which can be hilarious at times, but by the end - again - I just wanted to shake them). Still love them, but that’s mostly just because I can't help myself.

And now let's talk briefly about that ending:

FINAL THOUGHTS:
I loved this RH series as a whole. It's wildly entertaining, and the dark and irreverent humor is great.

The smut - when we get any - is wonderful, but (and I can't believe I'm even saying this) I sincerely wish there was more, like... WTF. I never complain about wanting more smut but this absolutely needed more! lol! AND MORE ROMANCE, TOO, OMG! I feel DEPRIVED! 😭

The world-building is also great and I love this spin on the four horsemen.

CM's writing is excellent 90% of the time (I still don't know what the hell happened with book 3 - it felt so all over the place at times, it actually gave me a headache 😂).

And while this does technically end with an HEA, I feel like there needs to be an asterisk there with a clarification in the footnotes 😅🙈

Still loved it, though, and I'm glad I could have these babies immortalized as paperbacks on my shelf. 💜

Mycket, mycket bra!!!

Note: one thing that bothers me is at the end of the series the fmc “dies” by sacrificing herself, but becomes reincarnated.

It’s 5 years later and the men are miserable. They are being stalked by a new ghost girl who then becomes real. The men instantly accept and love her, as well as have sex with her. It feels like betrayal because the fmc we spent four books following is dead, and while the new version shares some traits, she is NOT the same. The new version has lots of differences and it feels like a betrayal that the men are with her even though she’s technically the same person?

2.5 ⭐️

I couldn’t finish this book…I got to page 327…the fourth book is actually told from all POV, which is a bonus, since the previous ones were only told from Paca’s POV. I just couldn’t get into the characters, it’s obvious that they all have feelings, it’s just that they seem to want to hide it from each other. They don’t really treat Paca as well as she deserves. I wanted to finish, hoping all the mystery would be solved, but I was kinda bored and irritated by the characters.

Love love LOVE this series!!!! I’m not usually a reverse harem fan, but this one is done so perfectly. Believe it or not, there’s actually not a plethora of sex scenes. And the scenes that are there are done just right. Super hot, adds to the storyline, and somehow the author makes the gang bang, sweet…yeti said it. You’ll love the boys, you’ll love the FMC, awesome story, lots of action, twists. It’s a must read.

Was it just me or was the descriptions of what was happening hard to follow? I couldn't pictures any of the fighting that happened.
