Learn about the life and times of Brian Boru in the second book in John & Fatti Burke's Little Library series. Brian Boru grew up in a large warrior family over 1,000 years ago in Killaloe, Ireland. One of twelve sons, Brian and his brothers practiced raids on other counties from the River Shannon. Eventually, Brian's army and navy grew to be so big that he became King of all Ireland. But up in Dublin, the Vikings were invading. So he gathered his men and went into battle. Ages 6+.
As an adult reader the illustrations were funnier than perhaps they were meant to be, in terms of facial expressions. The picture of the Vikings in the trees made it seem the trees were eating the Vikings. A note to remember the Vikings didn't wear horns in their helmets. A page for correct pronunciations for names would have been helpful.
As a direct descendant of Brian Boru, I found the book fascinating as it quickly captured the highlights of his life as the high king of Ireland--and his murder, which was tastefully handled as this is a book for children.
