The Best Friend

Rate this book

The Amazon Charts bestselling series.

From the author of Dead Certain comes a twisting novel of friendship, love, and marriage—and all their cunning and deadly betrayals.

Back in 1986, Clint Broden was a novice New York defense attorney building a family with his wife, Anne, and impatient for his career to take off. That’s when his defense of his closest friend, Nick Zamora, made headlines. In spite of his lingering suspicions that his soul mate since childhood had a secret, Clint was dedicated to believing Nick hadn’t murdered his new bride.

Three decades later, Clint is now the celebrated go-to attorney for the rich and famous. Nick is a lauded literary superstar living his dreams in Los Angeles. Though separated by thirty years and three thousand miles, they’re still bound by one thing—the trial that tested the limits of their friendship.

After all these years, the last thing Clint expects is to be pulled back into Nick’s disruptive life. But this time, his motives for getting involved might be different from proving his old friend’s innocence. It could be Clint’s last chance to force a reckoning with the sins of the past.

Two of his wives are dead.

Wife #1 died "suspiciously" in a bathtub.

Wife #2's body was found in the bottom of the ocean.

Wife #2's death was also deemed "suspicious".

Is the husband guilty.....or unlucky?

Yes, the book's "Did the husband kill both of his wives?" premise was ultra-compelling.

Although the book was fast-paced, some sections of the book were overwritten.

Waaay too much text was devoted to the subplot of a mother dealing with terminal cancer and the impact of this death on her family.

More in-depth character development of the two "best friend" protagonists would have been preferred.

This book is the third book in author Adam Mitzner's "Broden Legal" series.

I did not read the first two books and this book is a standalone read.

I listened to the full-cast audiobook and all of the narrators did a superb job with the narration.

Overall, this book was an easy and entertaining read.

The Best Friend by Adam Mitzner is one of the best courtroom dramas I've read in some time. I should be sorry that I wasn't familiar with Mitzner's writing before now but I'm not, because now there are all of his other books to look forward to!

The story is broken down into four parts and is narrated by three different characters, attorney Clint Broden, his wife Anne, and his best friend Nick Zamora.

Part 1 begins in 1986, when Nick is accused of a serious crime. Clint defends his friend in court, and the story progresses from there, as does Clint's career. I was caught up in the story line immediately, as the book was well-written and although I thought I knew where it was going, I was interested in how it would play out. Ah, was I in for a surprise.

Part 2, beginning in 2003, takes everything to a new level, as Anne begins to narrate, and layers are peeled back to reveal details that deepened my interest level and made me realize I didn't have a clue where this story was going. I was hooked.

Part 3, set in 2020, is narrated by Nick, and it yanked the hook tighter as a new era in his life is presented. An older and maybe (or maybe not) wiser Nick becomes embroiled in another drama, and Clint reappears after 34 years to help his friend once again.

Part 4 brings us back around to Clint. I was still guessing in this section how everything would play out, and I wasn't disappointed in the surprise factor. Clint is indeed there for Nick, but things have changed, and somehow everything old is new again.

The Best Friend is a story so intriguing and so well-written, that I could sense the depth of feeling from each character toward the others. I may not have truly cared for all the characters, and I might have disagreed with some of their choices - or even all of their choices - but I never, at any point, failed to understand why they did what they did, and I never questioned their emotions.

With much gratitude to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer, and especially Adam Mitzner for an ARC in exchange for my review.

This novel was fun to read, and I had no trouble staying with it once I dove in. . . I've spent 30 years in a law firm, and it was fun to follow the processes and case flow, with insight on the strategy. That said, the writing is clear and well-explained for those who may not be familiar with some of the terms and processes. POV switches, which can sometimes confuse me if they are not clear, were well-executed and added interest.

Using Franz Kafka's quote at the beginning was brilliant:

My guiding principle is this: Guilt is never to be doubted.

The main character, Mr. Clinton Broden, was easy to have empathy for. . .so many things happening in his life, and yet he makes time to honor his lifelong friendship by providing service and sacrifice to his best friend Nicky. Other characters were well-fleshed out, but not so over drawn that a reader could see the writing on the wall. . . . it kept me guessing and second-guessing. I love a good mystery! Especially about lawyers. But a lawyer is a tricky character – and are often drawn too slick, too smart and too cold and calculating. All my years have taught me that they are some of that, sometimes, but in their real lives, well. . .are not.

This is my first read of the author’s work – I’m tracking down his other novels to catch up!

4 stars.

Thanks to Adam Mitzner, Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for an ARC and the opportunity to read and review this book!

Wow. Just wow. Not that I'm terribly surprised, mind you - I've read two other books by this author (although not in this series) and loved them both - but this one pretty much blew me away.

In 1986, struggling defense attorney Clint Broden lands an unexpected client: His best friend, Nick Zamora, who's been charged with the murder of his new wife Carolyn, a successful attorney in her own right. Nick, an aspiring writer, insists he's innocent; out of loyalty if nothing else, Clint agrees to serve as his attorney - even though he has a few misgivings. But he makes his living defending people he strongly suspects are guilty; after all, they, too, are entitled to a fair trial.

What happens in the courtroom changes both men's lives; 30 or so years later, Nick has left New York for Los Angeles, realizing his lifelong dream of becoming a respected writer of novels, screenplays and other lucrative assignments. Clint, who gained fame at the conclusion of Nick's trial, is in demand as well; he and his wife, Anne, have two mostly grown daughters (one a talented singer who takes after her mother) and all's right with both men's worlds.

Until it isn't. What are the chances that lightening will strike twice? Nick and Clint haven't spoken since Nick moved to the other side of the country, but now they must as Nick once again is desperate for legal help from his old friend. But many other things have changed, especially in Clint's mind. Old suspicions die hard (pun intended), so will he be able to let bygones be bygones at any cost? Chapters shift from Clint to Nick to Clint's wife, Anne, giving readers insights into what's really going on (including plenty of surprises). I wish I could be more specific, but revealing much more would spoil the excitement for other readers.

So for now, all I can do is profusely thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy. I'm still trying to catch my breath - highly recommended!

4.5 stars! The Best Friend is the third in the Broden Legal series by Adam Mitzner, and it is my first read by this author. The book can be read as a standalone and I did not note any references to previous books in the series. This book is a solid legal mystery, It is not a thriller and not really all that suspenseful but a good read with a fluid writing style that I enjoyed. The whodunnits, whowuzzits and why are obvious, but I still really enjoyed the novel and watching how the stories unfolded. The book describes several major events and POV’s in the lives of two best friends from childhood, Attorney Clint and Writer Nick, and the POV of Clint’s wife, Anne. We are introduced to the friends in their late 20’s early 30’s when Nick is accused of murdering his bride of one month (motive – having an affair). Clint, currently building a legal practice of his own, drops everything and jumps in to defend BF Nick. The legal arguments were interesting, Nick is found not guilty by reasonable doubt (not really a spoiler) and Clint’s career as a Criminal Law attorney skyrockets. Skip forward thirty+ years and the estranged but still best friends are embroiled in the murder trial of Nick’s second wife (no comment). Again, Clint (who is now a Criminal Lawyer superstar) steps up to the plate and defends his Best Friend – the legal procedures and arguments in this latter case are even more interesting and dubious. The major related events in Anne’s life are not being disclosed here to leave at least some of the possibly unexpected to your imagination.

I will be looking for this author again and I am interested and curious to read another in the series. I really loved the book and only rounded down to 4 stars because of the predictability of events in the novel (I like to be gobsmacked). Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

I. Loved. This. Book.

The Best Friend is the first book I've read by this author, and I found it to be totally riveting! I seem to have been in a bit of a rut lately, with not coming across any 5-star books, but this book hit it out of the ballpark. It dealt with love, friendship, grief, forgiveness, deceit, and ethics in a totally irresistible way.

I'm so happy to have found another author I love and I will definitely be reading more of Mr. Mitzner's books!

No one should ever doubt their own guilt.

Clint Broden and Nick Zamora were childhood friends. Clint now an upcoming lawyer and happily married and Nick an upcoming author just recently married. They had a long standing joke between them that if one of them ever killed anyone, the other would come help with the shovel. Was it a premonition of what was to come? Clint received a call from his office from an emotional Nick that his wife died in their bathtub. The testing of what a friendship is when Clint stood by his friend and ultimately represented him when he was charged with murder. He believed that Nick was innocent. It was his job to cast doubt to the jury.

The narration is done in 3 parts in this legal thriller. Clint as he describes his friendship with Nick, his marriage to Anna along with their hopes and dreams. It was detailed as the trial went on and his strategy to set Clint free.

Anna his wife and after the trial how she desired to start a family. She put a hold on her dreams to be an actress when she realized that being a mom was the best act she ever dreamed of.

Nicky after the trial moved to California and became the successful author. His new marriage and the how friendships seem to die on their own until you need them once again.

A good thriller has many turns and twists and to give anything away is death to a book. This book deserves to be read with anticipation as it deals with friendship, marriage, and forgiveness. A bit of redemption tops it off. Adam Mitzner does well in head games with his characters. Highly recommend.

A Special Thank you to Thomas Mercer and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

The Best Friend Is Mitzner’s Best Book Yet!

Having read all seven of this author’s previous books I was very pleased to be given an advance copy of The Best Friend (the third book in the Broden Legal series) by NetGalley and the publisher to read.

For quite some time now Adam Mitzner has been on my list of my "don't miss" authors -- meaning that if he wrote it, I'll be rushing to read it — but with The Best Friend he’s risen to near the pinnacle of this list. This is because The Best Friend demonstrates that Mitzner has, yet again, further advanced his skills for writing intelligent, credible, very hard-to-put-down thrillers/mysteries, with very well-developed characters.

Without describing its plot, which can be read about in the Book Description above, The Best Friend shares — and in some cases surpasses — many of the same qualities I felt were characteristic of each of Mitzner's seven previous highly recommendable books: 1) excellent pacing, which starts off slow and steadily builds to a level that will have you turning the pages at a rapid pace to find out what happens next; 2) creating highly realistic flawed, yet sympathetic, characters; 3) providing such true-to-life prose that makes you feel you are actually hearing the characters speaking their words; 4) having the main character and most of his secondary characters be so fully dimensionalized that you forget you are reading a book and not right there with them experiencing the turmoil in their personal and professional lives; and 5) providing some interesting plot twists.

I think it’s obvious from my above comments that I highly recommend you rush out to read a copy of The Best Friend when it is released on or about April 14th. The same recommendation applies to each of Mitzner's other mystery/legal thriller books.

The major characters all tell their stories here in the first person. Problem is, they conflict with what actually happened; did Nick kill his wife or did she drown accidentally after their first month of marriage. Struggling attorney and Nick's childhood friend Clinton quickly agree's to defend Nick but is subsequently torn between loyalty to his best friend and justice. After the trial, Nick and Clint become estranged by distance and doubts but connect again 34 years later under similar circumstances. Will justice be finally served for a moral crime more serious than the questionable homicide of Nick's young actress wife? Read the entire book and find out!

A good legal story

Far from a "thriller" , this story is about two best friends, one a lawyer and the other a writer. A really good story where other things come into play that are every bit as important as the courtroom. Anybody with a best friend should thoroughly enjoy this book!

This book left me craving more books by Adam Mitzner! What story!

I loved how layered this story was. We meet attorney Clint and his wife Anne, Clint’s best friend Nick and his new wife. Very early on Clint is called to help his friend whose wife has died. Was it an accident or was it murder? And if it wasn’t accident, who is responsible? What is revealed in court will have you questioning Nick, their friendship, and my favorite…. What would you do? While the first part of the book is told from Clint’s perspective, halfway through we hear from someone else and it turns the whole story on its head.

Read if you like:

-legal thrillers
-friendship with secrets
-betrayal
-shocking twists

This was my first book by Adam Mitzner and IT WILL NOT BE MY LAST!!!!!

From the beginning of the book, Mr. Mitzner had my attention, and I couldn't read fast enough to find out how the story ended.

The book centers around two legal cases involving the main character, Clinton Broden, and his childhood friend, Nick Zamora. The beginning of the book is told from Broden's perspective, but as the book continues we hear from Broden's wife as well as Nick. I thoroughly enjoyed the way that Mitzner employed these changes of perspective, and thought that it added a lot of nuance and interest to the overall story.

As the book proceeds, the reader gets further pieces of information as it relates to the legal aspects of the story, but also the personal relationships of the characters and their families. I don't want to go any further for fear of spoilers, but I will say that this book never lost my interest, and there were enough twists and turns to keep me turning the pages long into the night.

I am often hard on legal thrillers, however this book was absolutely enjoyable. I liked the characters, and found that I wanted to know more about them the further into their stories Mitzner went. The characters were balanced- far from perfect but not detestable. I found this to be a necessary element to make the story feel real, and to keep the reader engaged. I really wanted to know what happened to all of them!!!!

Overall I think the story had enough twists and turns to keep a reader surprised and intrigued. Even in parts where I thought I knew where the story was going, I found the experience thoroughly enjoyable, and genuinely looked forward to my reading time.

I think Adam Mitzner will be in the category of John Grisham and Michael Connelly for me- a must-read author with stories that I can't want to dive into.

I highly recommend this book, and will be immediately purchasing Mr. Mitzner's backlist so that I can keep enjoying his work. Well done!!!!

A lawyer named Clint Broden has just received a call from his friend Nick Zamora who’s informed him that his new bride Carolyn McDermott had drowned in their bathtub 🛀🏼 . Nicky then hires Clint to represent him and he wins.

Several years later, Nicky’s new wife Samantha goes missing and once again Nicky reaches out to his old friend, Clint to represent him. However, some new evidence start to come to light making Clint question Nicky’s innocence.

Engaging courtroom scenes, interesting dialogues and an intricate plot. Would recommend If you love legal thrillers.

Clint Broden and Nick Zamora have been best friends since childhood. By the mid-1980s, Clint is a struggling attorney in New York, and Nick is working on becoming a famous author. Nick was always the one the girls flocked around, tall and handsome with the good looks women find irresistible. While not quite in Nick’s league when it came to romance, Clint did okay.

Both men got married. But only two months after Nick’s wedding, his wife died. The cops weren’t buying the theory that it was an accident. Twenty-seven-year-old women don’t drown in their bathtubs. Nick swears that’s what happened, and Clint believes him, or thinks he does. Anyway, he immediately jumps in to defend him, yet begins to wonder if he can --- or should --- represent him, since he’s his best friend. It may not be the wisest move. Despite Clint’s protests, though, Nick won’t take no for an answer.

By the time the trial is finally over, the dynamics between the two have changed. Perhaps it was inevitable. During the course of the case, Clint found out things he really didn’t want to know. Facts emerged, and doubts settled in. So the distance grew wider and wider, and then Clint didn’t see Nick for decades. In reality, he figured his old friend might never be in his life again. But that turns out to be wrong. Very wrong.

In the intervening years, Nick made it to the bestseller list, while Clint became a celebrated criminal defense lawyer. Now, their hard-won fame brings them together in a most spectacular way. It almost seems like old times again, the best friends enjoying each other like before, but those simmering secrets have a way of making themselves back to the surface. They never were completely forgotten. It’s hard to keep secrets buried. And now it’s hard to keep them from eating at the friendship. The love between Clint and Nick may have taken a turn. But how will that affect their latest problem?

Adam Mitzner has an excellent grasp on the legal world. Being a Manhattan attorney, he knows his stuff. Once he takes his readers inside the courtroom, he leads them through the trial like he’s working with a live jury, only leaving out the dull parts. And believe me, there’s nothing dull about THE BEST FRIEND, not even the hours in front of the judge. Maybe least of all the hours in front of the judge, because Clint is, after all, an exceptional trial attorney, and he has some stunning Perry Mason moments.

But this legal thriller isn’t simply about solving the mystery; it’s about friendship and conscience, and the complications that arise when the two collide. What would you do if you doubted your best friend’s innocence? Attorneys don’t have to believe that their client didn’t commit the crime; they just have to defend them in a court of law. Friends aren’t afforded that same luxury. Clint might end up sorry he agreed to take the case. Then again, what he learns may surprise him in a way he wasn’t expecting.

The third book in the "Broden Legal" series is not about Ella Broden, but her father, Clint Broden, who in the previous two books was just Ella's big name trial lawyer daddy. Now, the events related in the previous books — the death of Ella's sister, Charlotte, and the death of their mother when they were children — are reexamined through Clint Broden's eyes.

The plot is another one split between two events and multiple POVs. When Clint was a young, hungry lawyer, his young, hungry writer friend Nick married a beautiful woman, only for her to drown in her bathtub less than a year later. Clint defended his friend on a murder charge (of course Nick was charged for murder, because as even Clint put it, "23-year-old women do not drown in their bathtubs"), who maintained his innocence. Clint got Nick acquitted, but the experience caused their friendship to wither away.

Now, many years later, Clint is a rich Manhattan defense lawyer, and Nick is a rich bestselling writer married to a Hollywood starlet. And Nick's new wife, who is half his age, is found drowned in the ocean after they had an argument at a cast party.

Naturally (and improbably) Clint will end up defending Nick again.

Once again, Adam Mitzner preserves some of the mystery by switching POVs, from Nick to Clint, and sometimes to Clint's deceased wife. There are twists around both cases, although in at least one we are told, through the POV narration, what really happened. And as in the previous book, the second half of this one is mostly courtroom procedural, which Mitzner, being a lawyer-writer, describes in much more realistic detail than you get on Law & Order.

I liked this book better than the previous one. I was wondering how long Mitzner would be able to milk Ella as a main character, but here she is a secondary one only making cameos (still with her cop boyfriend).

The Best Friend by Adam Mitzner. A story of deaths, the trials and tribulations of long term relationships and ultimately a love story with a unique twist. Reliable characters, realistic interaction between the characters and tense courtroom drama make this one of the best legal thrillers that I have read in a quite some time. Will be looking for Mr. Mitzner's backlist and future books.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

This is going on my “Best of the Year” list. Probably his most outstanding effort, as he didn’t keep referring to his first two books in the series. This works as a stand-alone.

I almost didn’t read this because I started Book #2 and found it repetitious- felt I was rehashing Book #1. This was so good that I’m going to try Never Goodbye again.

A legal thriller that highlights the life of defense attorney Clint Broden, his wife Anne, and best friend Nick Zamora. The bonds of family and friendship are explored as well as the many secrets that are kept to hold a relationship together. Courtroom drama at its best.

Clint Broden and Nick Zamora grew up together and always had each other’s backs. Nick is a struggling author and Clint is waiting for his big break. When Nick is arrested for murdering his wife, his best friend takes the case . Both Clint and his wife Ann, strongly believe that Nick is innocent of the crime. His legal career takes off after winning the case.
Thirty years later, Nick is a famous author, living in California and his second wife mysteriously dies and he is again arrested for murder. Clint again defends his friend even though the two men have lost touch. Secrets are revealed and Clint discovers shocking betrayals that change the friendship.

Loved this book that I received from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. The narrations of the three characters revealed their innermost thoughts and secrets . The courtroom drama was mesmerizing and should not be missed. Highly recommended!!

Adam Mitzner is a practicing attorney in New York who has somehow found the time to write eight legal thrillers set in New York. Just about a year ago, I reveiewed A Matter of Will, and began my review by saying “I don’t recall reading anything by Adam Mitzner, and I have no idea why!” Somehow, between then and now, I forgot about him, but thanks to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley, I recently received a copy of The Best Friend (in exchange for this honest review) and found it to be pretty much perfect as an escape for someone who’s been sheltering in place for a few months!

This is #3 in the Clint Broden series, but even though I haven’t read either Dead Certain or Never Goodbye, I found this one to be fine as a standalone. It gives a great deal of Clint’s backstory as it bounces back and forth between present day and thirty-plus years ago. When Clint was just starting his legal career in New York, he defended his BFF Nick Zamora in a case that made headlines and kickstarted Clint into his role as THE sought-after attorney for the rich and famous.

Although Clint had suspicions about the circumstances surrounding the drowning death of Nick’s wife back then, he chose to believe his friend hadn’t murdered his wife of one month. But their friendship wasn’t the same after that, and for the next few decades they went their separate ways. Nick comes back into Clint’s life, once again accused of killing his wife (this time a trophy fit to be seen on the arm of the megastar author and celebrity Nick has become). As the story unfolds, it seems possible that Clint might have a reason to agree to take the case other than wanting to prove Nick’s innocence.

It’s a fun read, well plotted with some interesting ethical dilemmas and fully developed characters. Like I said, I’ll be seeking out more of Mr. Mitzner’s work, and give this one five stars.

The Best Friend by Adam Mitzner
Adam Mitzner is one of those writers whose works manage to keep me up well past my bedtime. Luckily I started this one early in the day and post knee surgery so I had a head start. I might actually get some sleep tonight.
The Best Friend is indeed about two best friends from childhood. One has become a lawyer and the other a writer trying to get published. Clint Broden is the lawyer who gets called by his childhood friend Nick Zamora. Nick is crying and says his new wife Carolyn has drowned in the bathtub. Clint rushes to his aid and agrees to take his case when Nick is arrested for murder. This follows on in what appears to be a straightforward lawyer/client procedural. However, this portion is only prologue to a tale of friendship/love/betrayal/ethics but not necessarily by the usual suspects. The rest of the story is just as engaging as the first part dealing the trial and the consequences. The story makes you sure you know what is happening and then makes you think of how you would handle certain situations if thrust upon you.
I will not give more details as it could possibly lead you to miss the chance to ponder certain issues as they are developing.
All Adam Mitzner’s works are truly the work of a masterful writer. Don’t miss any of his books.
I was provide an e-ARC by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my fair and honest review. I receive nothing except for the advance look at the book. I am appreciative for this opportunity.

Oooh this was good! I love a good legal thriller. However, the danger can be that once you've read the best of this genre, others fail to impress. This did not fail.

Told by three narrators - Clint, a lawyer, is wife Anne, and his best friend, Nick the writer - the reader gets great insight into events from a variety of perspectives. By using three narrators the author reveals little snippets of information that help us complete a mental jigsaw puzzle over the course of the book.

Clint and Nick have been friends since childhood but they are very different men. Clint is dependable, hardworking and smart, Nick is a bit of a playboy and struggling writer but they complement each other well. Adam Mitzner does well to make the characters feel rounded and realistic in all their traits and flaws. Anne is also constructed in this way and I really empathised with her and bought into her story.

I also loved that it was told across three different time periods - 1986, 2003 and 2020. This served to not only give us background to the three characters but keep the pace and only give us relevant plot.

Some incidents in the book were totally unexpected and I love being surprised as it doesn't happen nearly as often as I would like.

I felt like this was right in the same category as Steve Cavanagh whose books I have loved recently. I'm definitely going back to previous titles from Adam Mitzner!

Thanks to Thomas and Mercer publishers and Netgalley for the advanced copy of this brilliant book.

The Best Friend is one of the best legal thrillers I have read in a long time, a cracking wonderful story with a cast of great characters, brilliant court scenes, shocks and some real twists you don’t see coming.
The depth of this story holds your interest throughout, the term ‘page turner’ has never been so apt.
The plot is unusual and compelling, narrated by the three main characters, defence attorney Chris Borden, his wife Anne and his best friend from childhood Nick.
Gradually the layers of the story are peeled back and revealed, there was one small statement, a sentence really, that shocked me to the core, so much so I had to take a deep breath and stop reading until my heart rate settled, it came out of the blue and my heart went out to Clint.
I can’t praise the standard of writing enough, well done indeed Mr Mitzner.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.

Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book spans decades and revolves around the relationship between Clint, a defense attorney, and his best friend since childhood, Nicky, who was accused of killing his wife in 1986. Clint defends Nicky but the two lose touch following the trial, until an event brings them back together in the current day and past truths are revealed.

I read and enjoyed Adam Mitzner’s first novel and for some reason never read another one until now. I am so glad I read this one. I was drawn in from the start and was never bored nor was I disappointed with the ending. I thought the characters were pretty well developed and the story was really well written. I will definitely be circling back on the first 2 books in this series.

Darned close to five stars. As legal thrillers go, it is. Clint and Nicky have been best friends since, well, forever. Nicky is the classic good looking tall guy. Clint is the smart one, handsome enough, but ladies don't swoon over him. Clint can hardly believe his good fortune when a lovely lady named Anne marries him. Nicky finally settles down and takes a wife, too, but she dies just a couple months after their wedding. The cops think he killed her. He swears he didn't. Clint, a lawyer, agrees to defend him. After that, things get tricky. Clint steadfastly believed his best friend didn't murder his wife, but doubts creep in. And the story takes some incredible twists from there on...

First of all, I have to say thank you to the author, Goodreads, NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC for review. What follows is my unbiased opinion, offered solely in exchange for the opportunity to read The Best Friend:

I loved this book! I rarely give a full 5 star review, but this book deserved it, IMHO. Granted, I work in the legal profession, so the subject matter appealed to me, but it is more than just a "court case" book. It's really a book about a friendship and a marriage, and the choices people make.

Clint is the attorney, his wife is Anne, and Nicky is Clint's childhood friend, who becomes a celebrated author. We get to peek in at each of them, at different times in their lives, from different points of view, and relive various events that, at first seem unrelated, but gradually weave together a carefully crafted story that spans the course of 35 years.

SPOILER PARAGRAPH! The first section takes place in the mid-1980's, and we see Clint (or Clinton, as Nicky calls him) narrate a section concerning Nicky being charged with murder he swears he did not commit. The next section is in the early 2000's, narrated by Anne as she goes through a battle with breast cancer and relives some of the moments from 20 years earlier. The third section is written from Nicky's point of view and updates his life in the recent past and the impact the last 35 years has had on him, and finally, in the fourth section Clint ties it all up with another murder trial in the present day, but which is very different from the circumstances of the first. Or is it?

One of the things that I liked the best about this story was the realness of it. The courtroom scenes and legal machinations read true to life, but are in no way boring. I came away with a greater appreciation for criminal defense law (I work in civil). I think Clinton Broder is no less an example to the legal community as Atticus Finch, of what a good attorney should be - as a lawyer, and as a person. The character development is outstanding - especially of Clint, but also of Anne and Nicky, and the lesser, secondary players, as well. Each one has a distinct and separate voice, and you see them grow from naive and self-indulgent young adults to older individuals, capable of greater generosity and love.

I appreciated the theme of self-indulgence that is addressed in this book: the idea of, is wanting something badly enough, justification for doing whatever it takes to obtain the object of your desire? Does the end justify the means, if the end means enough to you? Each of the main characters in this book answered this question differently, and some of them changed their mind once they were already down the path they had initially chosen. If you've chosen badly, how do you mitigate that choice? When is enough restitution, enough?

Although the story, itself, is a riveting one, the moral questions that hang on the story's framework are just as intriguing. I love it when a book makes me think as much as this one did, and yet, manages to do it in a way that is not preachy, heavy-handed, or grandstanding. The Best Friend delivered in every way.

If you are at all interested in legal procedurals, in morality plays, in stories of lifetime friendships and marriages and the secrets that can develop unbeknownst to the players, or just want a really good book with depth and feeling and an appropriate ending for all involved, you need to read "The Best Friend" by Adam Mitzner! I now have to go back and read books #1 and #2 in the Clinton Broder series!

My penultimate Mitzner book. The last book of the Broden series. I've read #1 but not #2 because I couldn't get #2 yet but you don't have to read these in order. Spoilers ahead.

Clint is a young lawyer at the start of the book with a young family and Nicky is his best childhood friend. Nick has been accused of murdering his wife (Carolyn), with whom he's only been wed for a short time (a month?) She was found in the bathtub drowned and with bruising around the front as if someone had forced her underwater. Nick claims that he was asleep the whole time and found her dead in the morning. The evidence seems overwhelming but Clint gets his client off by convincing the jury that the district attorney couldn't prove the crime beyond a reasonable doubt.

The book shifts POV back and forth and the next one is of Clint's wife Anne. It shows that Clint and Anne had a happy life, then she was diagnosed with cancer and dies.

The last time shift is when both Clint and Nick are seniors. Nick became a well known writer and is married to an actress (Samantha) 3o years his junior. After some years of marriage they drift apart, mainly due to lifestyle differences and age. At a party, she makes known that she is attracted to her director (of a film she's doing). Nick goes home first. Sam comes home later to tell Nick she's getting a divorce. On the patio, she slips on her high heels, falls over and dies of a broken neck. They are home alone and no one will believe she died accidentally so Nick swims with her dead body 20-30 minutes out into the ocean and dumps her body there.

Her body is washed ashore a day later a few miles away and after a police investigation the police arrest Nick for murder. Nick and Clint have fallen apart during the meantime but they reconnect and Clint once again defends Nick. We are shown that Anne slept together with Nick once and Clint did find out. So the "suspense" is whether Clint took the case to throw it.

We are shown a very quick trial where Clint did enough to get Nick off again. Clint tells Nick that he knew about the affair and the book ends.

This is par for the course of all the Mitzner books I've read. Very easy to read and get into. Likeable characters and good reading for 90% of the book but I've never liked the endings. Same with this one. I have to say a bit of a nothing burger. Not sure how else I wanted it but it kinda ended with a fizzle instead of a sizzle.
