This is book 8 in The Falau Files series, with our main character being Michael Falau. The start of this book finds him in a bad way, having broken his sobriety after the events of the last book when his sponsor Dave was killed in a horrific manner and his house mate Grady was also seriously injured. He has spent months in a stupor, not working or even looking after himself.
While he is drunk out of his skull, an EMP pulse is set off in the Isle of Man. The British secret service MI6 takes note and has to try to find who was behind this. All power was lost in one of its cities and the threat is put out there, that this was just a test and a bigger target is next. One of the top men in MI6, Nathan Young, receives a call from the terrorist in control of this strike, a man called Abbas, who he knows him from a conflict decades ago, when he didn’t manage to kill him when he had the chance.
MI6 ask the System for a favour, to hunt down the leader of this terrorist group, in his Syrian Desert location and kill him and anyone else there. His friend Tyler, who hired him into the System, visits him to see if he’s fit to do the job. He only has less than 48 hours to get the job done and he isn’t even sober. He gets on a plane without one of Tyler’s special tapes to help him relax and a Middle Eastern man, beside him in first class, tries to comfort him. Turns out, Tyler has put this man in place to work with Falau on this case.
He gets another surprise on his way through the desert, as another man joins their small group. This case is unlike anything else the System has ever sent Falau on. This is not a capture and bring to the judges case. This is to be a kill and destroy a possibly large number of terrorists and anyone else that might be in the way. This is a step Falau has problems dealing with, but you have to read and see if he can overcome this. If they don’t get to Abbas before he sets off the next EMP signal, a large British city will be destroyed.
The story itself moves along at a great pace. You have the hunt for the EMP device by MI6 and then the separate hunt for the terrorist who is responsible. You also have the frail state that Falau is in and the overwhelming number of possible targets to be killed. You have deeply religious Abbas, who has no known weaknesses and is doing what he is, all in the name of Allah, making him even more difficult to find, defeat and kill. Many have tried, but no-one has succeeded.
Another great Falau storyline, just a shame there so many typos and grammar problems. I really enjoyed the story itself, but constantly picking up errors, slowed me down and took a good bit of enjoyment away from reading it. If you like the Falau files, this is a great storyline and something a bit different than his usual jobs. Just ignore the problematic errors, which may be a bit hard for some and makes me have to deduct a star at least. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I have enjoyed this series. Falau and Tyler oh, and the old waitress leave lasting impressions. Loved that Tyler had a more active role in this mission. I would say he is a man with no conscience. I bet his back story is he is married with young kids...I hope this isn't the end of the story. A note: I find it interesting the difference between Great Britain and The United States police/government enforcement. Then there is Falau's way.
Fav quotes:
"My brothers would always have been jeans and T-shirts kind of guys. All of a sudden we're dressing in traditional Muslim clothing. They started attending the mosque even though we had never done so where I lived. And when they didn't hear the anger from the pulpit, they abandoned that part of the Muslim religion as well." said Shaukat. "The Internet is really what opened the door to them for becoming radical lies. If you get exactly what they wanted to hear and nothing else. They fell right into lockstep with the extreme Muslim friend."
"They felt like their new way of life was the way to go. They felt like they were going to receive in the afterlife praise they could join what they called the holy." "...... "My brothers weren’t the smartest guys. All the research and all their radicalization came from the Internet. So, the group that had the flashiest website and the most extreme language is the one they eventually went to."
Gripping and captivating are the first two words that come to mind as I think of this book. I am a fan of the Falau Files, and as with each one prior to this, the author does a fine job bringing you into the story so you feel like you're there. Never a spoiler in my reviews, this book will provide you with tons of thrills, non-stop action that will keep you swiping your kindle and keep you up past your bedtime. You don' t have to read the other books in order to enjoy this one however, it is helpful. Great descriptions and background info allow you to figure out the characters and their relationships jumping right in because they and the storyline are well developed enough that you don't miss a beat. However, I recommend that you read the ones before this if for no other reason you will enjoy them! I received an advance copy and am providing my unsolicited review.
Another Mike Falau file in need of editing. For example all of his characters use the same grade-school bad grammar quirk annoyingly often, they’re “gonna” do something.
The bad guys are about to get their hands on an Electromagnetic Pulse Device. A great number of pages are devoted to discussing philosophy and of course both sides have Allah/God on their side.
Although this book was published in 2019 the author can’t resist using the Concord to cross the Atlantic. He even has it land in Syria.
The book is sloppily written and edited throughout. Expect violence and profanity, I almost forgot torture. The moral code here, if such there can be said to be, is kill or be killed. This may not be my least favourite book of the genre but it’s a close second.
This was a nice come back for Michael. I believe the team worked well together and grew to respect one another more than before.
Note to the author...you might want to read this book yourself so that you can take note of the many typos and repeated words. Some times I had to read a sentence four maybe five times just to figure out what was supposed to be said.
Very good read, but going from being a complete drunken alcoholic. Then flying to an extremely remote location on the other side of the globe to save the world. All in a matter of hours was a bit far fetched. Also, I am sure there was not one page without a grammatical error. Seem like it was translated to English by someone who does not speak the language very well.

Anyone who has read a "Mike Falau" novel knows his imperfections. Sometimes these rage out of control and you may not like him but his courage and sense of justice always come through. Never more so than in this book. If you're looking for action with the human touch, this book is for you.
Thoroughly good read, good story, interesting characters, a few twists and turns, just what I want in a good tale. Having read Books 1 through 8 I highly recommend all The Falau Files. Looking forward to book 9 coming soon.
He has been drinking for months but The System has a job for him but is he ready to be back in the game? Michael doesn't miss a beat as he hunts down a terrorist.
Michael Falau is sent to the Syrian Desert on a kill mission. Abbas Akamai has an EMP, electromagnetic pulse, weapon that can destroy circuitry of all things using electrical power. This can render cities helpless. He and his team of 3 are sent to kill Abbas and find out where her has planted this weapon. They have to find Abbas and get to him as no one else has. This is another thriller in the series.
