Seven Crows by Kate Kessler is the first book in the thrilling Killian Delaney series. While the character development in this first book of the series will carry over into book two this one actually could be read as a standalone if choosing to do so.

Killian Delaney is a tough as nail ex-con that doesn’t regret her crime in the least. Killian had beaten a man within an inch of his life and would do it again in a heartbeat. After nine years of serving her time Killian only wants to keep her nose out of trouble and go about her life now that she’s out on parole.

When Killian gets a call from her sister that begs for help to find her niece Killian knows just who is responsible for the kidnapping. Forgetting about her parole Killian knows the man she went to jail over is at the center of a notorious biker gang and she will do nothing to find him and get her niece back before it’s too late.

Seven Crows is not the first book I’ve read by Kate Kessler, a few years ago I picked up her Audrey Harte series and really enjoyed the grittiness of her lead character. Killian has that same tough and dark side to her but instead of being a criminal psychologist Killian is a criminal herself. Killian story however is one that makes you want to side with her to take down the bad guys. Now the whole gang type of story isn’t exactly my favorite but so this opener of the series only rated at three and a half stars but I’d be interested to come back to see how the series develops with this new kick ass lead.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Killian Delaney served 9 years in prison and has only been out for 2 months. What was she in for? Oh, she messed up Rank Cirello real bad. He used to be handsome but not anymore. She wasn't trying to kill him. Better that he suffers for the rest of his life. She still has another 9 months of parole and doesn't want to go back. Life was hard there since Rank put out 27 contracts on her. However, now he has kidnapped her niece and she would either die or go back to prison for family.

The book is named for the seven crows tattooed on Killian's back.

If you like action or books with bikers, here it is. This is a total action story, mostly all fights. Killian is someone you don't want to mess with. She was a MMA fighter and she's still got it. She drives a cherry red Impala and is quite comfortable with violence. Her favorite punch is to the throat. There's a lot of hand to hand combat in the story, but also guns, knives, brass knuckles. The biker gangs include the Crows, the SOBs, and the White Reapers. I like to see a really tough female character occasionally and I enjoyed Killian.

Thanks to Netgalley and Hatchette Book Group for a copy of the eARC in exchange for a fair review.

Killian Delaney is no stranger to violence it is why she spent nine years in prison. When her sister calls her to let her know that her niece Shannon is missing. Killian will stop at nothing to get her back. She already knows who took her, and why. It is all buried in the past.

He is the reason she went to jail, the man she left alive after nearly beating him to death. He wants his revenge, one way or another this is going to end with someone dying.

I discovered Kate Kessler through her other series, and I love those books so when I saw this one I knew I had to read it even though it was different book. It almost reads like the start to a new series, but I don't see that there will be more than one featuring Killian.

Kate likes dark characters and Killian is no different then Audrey. They are strong women, but Killian is more prone to violence than Audrey is. I couldn't stop reading this, I wasn't all that shocked by the reveals, but it didn't take away from reading pleasure either. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

A fast moving thriller that builds tension straight from the start. A woman with a criminal past and little to lose must plan and execute the rescue of her niece from a gang of thugs that bear her a grudge or twelve. Her ability to fight through encounters with the ghosts of her past to insure her niece has a better life will have you cheering her on, even though her actions may not be the typical for the "good" guys. This was a very good book filled with excitement and a sense of doing whatever was needed to keep her family safe. I sincerely hope this is not the last we see of this cast of characters.

I received an electronic copy of this novel on September 6, 2019, from Netgalley, Kate Kessler, and Red Hook Books - Hatchette Book Group. Thank you for sharing your hard work with me. I have read "Seven Crows" of my own volition, and this review reflects my personal opinion of this work. I am happy to recommend this crime novel to friends and family. Kate Kessler is an author I will need to follow.

I thoroughly enjoyed Killian Delaney. She is a character I would love to see more of. There are subjects and language not suitable for children, but adults should find it as compelling as I did. We have a galley of persons with questionable talents and jobs, three groups of warring biker dudes and ladies, at least two crime bosses or the like, and people traffickers - a woman recently released from prison after serving time for beating a man nearly to death, a parole officer, several cops, and the odd witness. So not wholesome, but the good guys do what they should, as do the bad guys. Give it a go. This is a fast read, one setting, and popcorn. The nicest thing about Kindle books - popcorn butter washes off of the screen without leaving a stain.

I always have a good look at a book's cover before reading the tale. The cover for the first book, Seven Crows, in Kate Kessler's Killian Delaney series drew me in. Have you heard that old nursery rhyme about counting crows? Seven for a secret never to be told....

Killian is an ex-con, hard core fighter and is associated with a biker gang. She's just been released after a nine year stint in prison. It was a sentence she gladly served. She messed up the man who killed her boyfriend. He's tried to have her killed numerous times in prison. But now that she's out, he's trying something else - he's kidnapped her teenage niece. And....yup you got it....she's gonna hunt him down....again....

Seven Crows absolutely reads like an action movie. With a kicka** female lead. Kessler does a great job of revealing Killian's past even as she fights to find Shannon. Her extended family includes the Crow MC. Now, fair warning - the activities of outlaw MCs play a large part in the plot. And Killian's actions and thoughts reflect someone living that life. As a reader, I did initially question some of the dialogue, reactions and outcomes of certain plotlines - were they realistic? Well, not maybe to me, but they perfectly suit the tone and tenor of the plot and players.

The supporting characters are also intriguing. Dash is from the old days - he and Kill have a history. (And maybe a future?) He's running a legit business now, but behind that front, he's still got his hand in some questionable activities. His cohort, Story, is another enigmatic female support characters I'd love to hear her backstory as well.

The action doesn't stop, the danger just multiplies and Killian's own moral compass never budges. The reader can't help but be on her side as she battles seemingly overwhelming odds. Revenge drives her forward. Will she find redemption?

Gentle readers, this one's probably not for you. But if you watched Sons of Anarchy, this is a book you'd probably enjoy. And....keep your eyes out the second Killian book, Call of Vultures. It releases December 1/20.

Motorcycle clubs (if that's all they are) are fine. "Bikie gangs", however, are not for me. I hate seeing them romanticised, but thought I'd have better luck with this thriller.

It's tricky. Because while a lot of it shows bikie gangs in all their horror, a fair portion of the novel does romanticise. Which is annoying, because there's so much potential in the Seven Crows universe to truly shake up bikie fiction.

There are plenty of strong female characters...though they still choose to inhabit the very patriarchal society of bikie life. But imagine if all the women banded together and decided to ditch the dudes. Have an all-female club. Even make it an all-female gang, if need be...

I forget how Killian Delaney got involved with the Crows. Before or after she hooked up with Jason? Anyway, he's dead. (Not really a spoiler.) But backstories aren't shared unless they're relevant to the plot...

She thought Jason was her "true love". WRONG. But that's OK, because there was another guy who loved her all along, and still loves her now, and now she loves him...

This is what I meant about the romanticisation. If you ask any bikie, they'd claim their club is the good one; that they only do bad stuff in revenge for other gangs' bad stuff. And that's the narrative the author pushes about the Crows. Killian's new love has been "going legit", because he's not like other bikie members, or whatever.

And it's just so boring and patriarchal. There's so much set-up for revolution. While incarcerated in a women's prison, Killian was in a sexual relationship with another inmate. So she's bi, right? That would be so refreshing for a female to be bisexual in the patriarchy. However, Killian may have only been (and I hate to type this actual phrase that was in the book) "gay for the stay".

That's not the author talking. I'm pretty sure it's the character and the bikie culture. It would've been brilliant if Killian's new love was also female, to truly challenge bikie patriarchy.

Seven Crows is Book 1 in a series. Book 2, Call of Vultures, is due out later in 2020. I don't know if more are contracted. And because this is only the first taste, perhaps later installments move more to destroy the patriarchy instead of enabling it. It's just so frustrating to see so much potential go not-pursued in favour of less revolutionary threads.

Seven Crows is challenging. And because it has so much possibility the series will be all the more disappointing if it doesn't reach its full capability.

Yes to giving this book five stars and yes to all of the characters in this book. The entire story felt real weather people out believe it or not there are people like this most of the time you only hear or come in contact with males, but Killian is a breath of fresh air. The story itself you keep you going from the beginning of her release from prison to the very last pages and you the reader left with what is going on with Story, another badass woman. Following Killian you are taken not only through what is happening now and the search for her niece and a look back at how and why she ended up in prison and the people from past and present. Overall a very good book and very much worth the read. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 5 stars. Follow us at https://www.1rad-readerreviews.com

If you enjoyed Sons of Anarchy (TV show) you will enjoy this book! I loved the idea that this book is about a totally morally grey WOMAN character. Killy (love the pun) is an old lady - someone who ran with a member of a motorcycle gang. When her lover is killed by an opposing faction, she went on a revenge kill, and ended up in prison for almost killing one guy. She is an MMA fighter, so she has those skills. And I loved that she was a strong person like that - who didn't need a guy to take care of her.

After Killy gets out of prison on parole, her old life seems to be chasing after her - someone kidnaps her niece to enact revenge on her. Killy goes on an action packed, fist fighting road to save her niece and along the way reveals her life story and uncovers some secrets about her past life.

I loved the look into a motorcycle club. It is a very different sort of story from what I usually like and read. But it was fun. Filled with loyalty, revenge, betrayals, secrets and of course some fights and gun fights, etc. It is definitely a thrill ride to the end. Looking forward to seeing where Killy and her fighting skills will take her in next book.

I don't know if I would ever want to walk a mile in Killian Delaney's shoes, but I do know that I would never, ever take a single step in the shoes of one of her enemies. Whoa! Killian was one jacked up anti-heroine. As the ex-con and former MMA fighter, she was the one to be feared. She was the alpha in this story. She was a mercenary. She was a living legend. (She was something!) The simple premise of the story was one of revenge and redemption. The pacing was lightening quick, supported by a gritty narrative and a caustic dialog that pulled no punches. If you're looking for a tale with a physically invincible yet emotionally scarred heroine, you'll love this book. Although MC tales are not my sub-genre of choice—along with a great deal of violence—I really enjoyed this book.

Thank you to NetGalley, Redhook Books, and Kate Kessler for an ARC of 'Seven Crows' in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

I thought I would like this better - it's one note and I found that I started skimming pages as the story continued - it really glorifies violence- especially against women - I know this is the story the author wanted to tell but couldn't she tell a Killian story that didn't include the damage to the two teens? Why was that the story to tell? The fights got boring and so did Killian - like I said - one note.

This book was very violent! It wasn't what I thought, but for those that like that type of thing, it's probably a good one to them. I also never really got why she had seven crows tattooed on her back. It was the name of the motorcycle gang, but it wasn't clear.
This one was just ok for me.

This is the first book I have read by Kate Kessler and it won't be that last. I can't wait to get my hands on everything she has written.

Seven Crows is a story about a woman who ran with the Crows, just one of the gangs in the area.
When a rival gang kills her boyfriend she goes on the attack but leaves the head of the rival gang alive so he can always remember what she did to him when he looks in the mirror. She goes to prison for what she did the the man and has to watch her back inside because all the gangs have people on the inside or people that will do anything if he pays them enough.

When she is released from prison she has to learn how to live on the outside and keep her nose clean.........will she be able to do that?

This story is action packed and you will not want to put it down. Kate Kessler is a MUST read.

I have been avidly following Kessler's writing since first reading her debut novel three years ago. I have since read - and thoroughly enjoyed - all of her novels. At first, I thought that this title would be part of the Audrey Harte series (many of the titles involve a number), but this is a standalone novel set in a grittier Connecticut than the one that may first spring to mind. The book is a bit like an East Coast version of a season of Sons of Anarchy - with rival biker gangs, trafficking women, drugs and plenty of violence.

Killian Delaney is the main narrator of the book. She is on parole after severely assaulting the man who ordered the murder of her boyfriend. And though she has since largely cut ties with her past, that all changes when she receives a call from her sister to say that fifteen year old Shannon is missing. Calling on old friendships, Killian risks everything to see Shannon home.

The book moves along at a fast pace and it's hard to put this one down. Kessler excels at this type of main character - one with a past, but a good heart. The romance, along with some of the secrets of the past, are easy to see coming. And the ending seems to leave a segway for a sequel. I will definitely continue on with this series if Kessler continues it - I do like the characters introduced here, and I am curious to learn even more about them. Either way, Kessler continues to be an author that I'll be watching out for!

I was given this ebook by Goodreads in exchange for a review.
I am a big fan of Kate Kessler’s Audrey Harte series and she doesn’t disappoint with this new book.
The storyline involves human trafficking, rape, prison and redemption. It was more violent than I usually read, but the story would not be as powerful without it.

Killian is not your typical heroine and that's what I loved about her. This story is action packed. There are parts that are dark and gritty and not for everyone. Realistically written and at times raw, this one grabs you at the start and doesn't let go. These are some of the most intriguing and complex characters I have ever read and Killian and Dash will stay with me for a long while. I want more by this author.

Thank you RedHookBooks/Hachette Books for the gifted copy.

I was recently asked to read Kate Kessler's upcoming new release, Call of Vultures, which comes out December 1st. I was excited when the publisher offered to send me this book as well, which is the first of the Killian Delaney books...you know how I prefer reading series in order whenever possible.

This book starts off with a bang and never lets up and I loved the intensity of it. And Killian Delaney is one kick-a** main character that I know I am going to love reading about. She is an ex-con who is fiercely protective of those she loves and is so flawed and broken you can't help but love her all the more for it. I loved the way the story was mostly told in the present, but would flash back to the past every now and again to fill in Killian's backstory. It was such an effective way to help us get to know her better, without getting bogged down with too many details.

This story is fast-paced and is full of mystery, suspense and family drama all rolled into one. It's dark and gritty, but has heart at the same time and I could not get enough of it. It is filled with some of the best characters I've read in a long time - some really good guys and some really awful, bad guys that you wouldn't want to meet ever. I hope the good guys are ones we see again in future books.

There are some developments that happen regarding Killian personally that I will be curious to see how they play out in the next book. Secrets are revealed that were not meant to be and this has potential to stir things up. In addition, relationships are taken to new levels and of course that could be a good thing but it might not.

This is the type of book that totally consumes you because of both the nonstop action and the main character. I am excited to have found this book and am looking forward to reading the next book. Have you read this one yet?

What I Loved: The character Killian was such a bad-A$$. I was engrossed with her character. You remember that little movie, Taken, well she's the female version of that dad. Kate Kessler wrote a book that played like an action movie in my head. Every description she used was just the right one, and I loved it.

How I Felt: This was a gritty, descriptive book and every time someone landed a punch, I knew exactly how they were feeling. The writing was so well done, I could picture everything. I felt nervous for characters, hoping they were making the right decisions, worried if they would make it out alive. It was a suspense-filled thriller and had me on the edge of my seat.

To Read or Not To Read: This book is perfect for action/thriller lovers. It is full of moving pieces with some mystery and secrets revealed. There's very little down-time. The book is fast-paced, moving right along.

What's This Book About Anyway?
Killian Delaney has just been released from prison for beating a man to within an inch of his life. She's a bit of a celebrity in the underground circles for this, but she has made an enemy as well. The man she maimed beyond repair, the leader of a biker gang, wants revenge for ruining his life.

Killian's sister Megan, calls her with the terrifying news that Megan's daughter, Killian's niece is missing. Killian is immediately set on a course to get her back and no one will stand in her way. She now needs to step back into her old life with bike gangs and outside-the-law friends to save her niece.

My favorite place to discover new gems is the discount section of our local bookstore. The cover of Seven Crows caught my eye, and the synopsis reeled me in. I thumbed to a few random pages to sample. The violence was sticky with blood, the language was vicious and mean, and this character—"Killy" Delaney—brought both by the boxcar like a runaway train. I wanted to read more, so I added this read to my stack.

This book is about revenge but also love, making tough choices in an even tougher world, and a reminder that not everyone gets an easy ride. Killian is flawed, and sometimes I wanted to tell her to cool out, but then I'd hang on, walk into the fray alongside her, hand clenching the brass knuckles in her clenched fist as she made a mess of the bad guys.

This book has plenty of bad guys, and they are precisely the type of punchable trash you love to hate in a book like this. After a while, I was counting the pages to find out what kind of bone-breaking bashing "Kill" would bring to them.

Young love, prison, street fighting, bikers, sex, friendship, secret organizations, and family—Kessler's characters cover a lot of ground in 350+ pages. It's an exciting page-turner with interesting leads and savory breadcrumbs for the following books in the Killian Delaney series—I'm on the hook for more.

If you're into high-action badassery where the bad guys get stomped, the good guys aren't invincible, and the world isn't bright and sunny, Seven Crows may be a read for you.

Killian Delaney has always loved violence, during difficult times in her life it kept her inner demons at bay, before finally sending her to prison for a long stretch when she beat and crippled crime boss Rank.
Now she's back on the streets and determined not to go back to the pokey! A job as a bouncer allows her to let off some steam in a legal way but under the surface she's rarely far from the boiling point.
Then her niece, Shannon, is kidnapped by Shannon's scummy boyfriend and given as part payment of a debt to the SOB MC.
There's a clear link between Killian's crime and Shannon's kidnapping. "Seven Crows" is going to be about rescue and relentless retribution. Killian is one step away from going medieval, with Wex, SOB President and his boss, Rank, heading the list of dead men walking.
Along the way Killian picks up a crew, some from her past, including her one-time teen gang pal Dash, and the enigmatic Story, an unremarkable woman with mad skills.
In part it is a book about secrets and how they can come back to haunt you - but they are carefully hoarded, though hinted at regularly, almost until the end.
"Seven Crows" was highly enjoyable, though I would argue that the ending was the weakest part of the book - it introduces an improbable element which, backdated, makes the progress of the novel unsatisfactory - a classic case of deus ex machina.
A solid 3 Stars.

This book was a huge miss for me. I had a hard time feeling any sympathy for the characters. The main character, Killian, went to prison for totally maiming the guy who shot her boyfriend. She was never set up to be a character to root for which negated any feelings of her being a hero when she was fighting to get her niece back. It was just inter-rival gang violence. In addition to that, the progression of the story line was incredibly flabbergasting. Killian's niece has been kidnapped and Killian is trying to track her down. Yet, she finds time, on multiple occasions, to take showers, do laundry (seriously!), have a good meal. All I could think was "Lisbeth Salander wouldn't have worried about her clothes being dirty." At one point, after a good night's sleep, Killian is eating breakfast with her partner and he says "After breakfast, I have to go to the shop for a bit. I need to do some work before we visit our old friends." I do not understand this slow casual approach and did not enjoy reading the book.

Thanks to NetGalley and Redhook Books for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.

What a fantastic read this turned out to be. Killian Delaney is the star of the book, in more ways than one. People only have to know her name to be terrified of her, because of the way she didn't kill her victim but how she left him, still suffering. Now that guy has her niece and to get her back he wants her dead.

The book seemed pretty realistic to me, not that I have any real life experience in this world. It felt very scary at times and I was so worried about Killian and her niece Shannon. She however has enough sass and when she doesn't there was the equally wonderful Story - another fabulously strong female character who I would love to meet.

I think one of my favourite quotes is "You have a beautiful way with violence, Ms Delaney". Killian may not have always had an astute plan throughout the book, but she made up for it with guts and determination. I was behind her all the way hoping her parole officer wouldn't catch up with her.

I haven't read any of Kate's books before but I think I need to add her to my list for future reads. My thanks to Kate for an e copy of the book to review.

I received a digital advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really wanted to like this book. I really tried to dive into it super hard but it just fell flat for me. I didn't really connect with any of the characters. The writing was good, but it still felt very cliche.

Killian just wasn't set up for a character that you could sympathize with. The story as a whole just didn’t work for me. I almost hated the mundane things she did throughout the story. Like who does laundry when there is a kidnapper on the loose.. Like, oh I might get abducted, but I better make sure my socks are clean.

I didn’t like the storyline progression at all, but then again maybe I wasn’t the right audience which kind of baffles me as I have read several books by this author and I really enjoyed them.

I do want to thank the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for allowing me to review this title.

At first, I wasn't sure about this book when I picked it up, but once I did, I became lost in the pages. Kate Kessler's book, "Seven Crows," is filled with suspense, rage, power, pride, and family. As the reader, it's an emotional roller coaster following ex-con Killian Delaney navigate the kidnapping of her niece and old enemies vying for a fight. There are two things you need to know about Killian Delaney. Number one, no one messes with her family and second loyalty is everything. That phone call from her sister starts it all: the words, "Shannon's missing" (Kessler, 46) sends Killian on a hunt for those responsible. Taken by an old enemy, Shannon gets used as bait in a revenge filled fight that could land Killian back in jail. Her high threshold for pain and ruthless ways leave a path of broken bodies and lost souls. Her calm composer throughout it all will leave you amazed and questioning just how far you'd go if you had to save those you love.

I really enjoyed this new thriller by Kate Kessler and look forward to some of her other books. Ex-con Killian Delaney spent almost ten years in prison for seeking vengeance on the man responsible for killing her lover. She is MMA trained and can do more damage to someone with her training which helped her survive those years in prison. When her fifteen-year old niece is abducted, she knows the gangs are getting back at her and going back to prison will be worth it to save her niece. A great cast of unusual characters that although a little shady…they have Killian’s back. There is war between biker gangs, drugs, human trafficking and through all of this is Killian with her own set of values and the will to do what is necessary to survive. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

This book is intense. Very intense. Killian is an incredible character. She's totally badass and pretty messed up. This book is crass and graphic and extremely violent - even by my standards. The language was over the top and pretty much every female character has been raped at least once. This book won't be for everyone. It won't be for most people.

I liked Killian though. The females in this book were all pretty likable. Shannon was a bit of an idiot to get into the trouble she did but she also handled it like a pro. She was tough and resilient and vicious and it was great. I liked the parole officer, Donna. I liked Story the plain Jane backup. And I liked Dash even though I didn't really love the romance between him and Killian. Or the romance between her and Jason. I don't know, the romance all felt off to me.

It was a fast paced read and I enjoyed the action. 4 stars.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.

Killian been in jail for ten years after getting revenge on the man Rank responsible for her lover Jason death.

When she is release from prison she learns from her sister Megan that her 15 year old niece Shannon is missing that she been taken by the gangs as payback for what she did to their leader Rank as does everything to get her niece back all the while trying to adjust being back on the outside.

This was a good read I like that she a MMA fighter I always wanted to learn the dialogue in this book was good I like her relationship with her family even though it was hard for her to connect. I hope we get to read more about her.

Kate Kessler is an awesome writer who grabs you by the throat on Page 1 and doesn't let go. Her brilliantly crafted characters will draw you into their world for the duration, and the only question you'll ask yourself is this.

"Can I call in sick tomorrow so I can stay home and finish this book?"

Seven Crows is a page-turner, so if you're looking for a book to read while sitting in bed, I advise you to avoid this book like the plague. Refuse to heed my advice and you'll find yourself awake at 4am still reading like a maniac.

If a one-sitting read is your thing, then grab this book right now. You won't regret it.

Remind me to NEVER mess with a vigilante ex-con with a high threshold for pain, a skewed moral compass and a love for fighting.

On one hand, I love Killian and how tough she is. Girl can roll with the punches (literally). And on the other she definitely intimidates me.

She's the kind of person who you don't/can't make eye contact with. If you're ever kidnapped, she's the one to call.

The other characters were just ehh. Killian steals the show!

Plot wise, this one has a good story! Definitely page turning, gritty and raw.

Kessler's writing is something I didn't know I was missing. Everything just flows and before you know it, you've read half the book and it's 2 A.M.

Honestly, the story felt kinda one dimensional, I didn't get a lot of depth from the characters, BUT this is only the first of a series so I'm sure they'll develop and grow.

Mash ups: Taken, Sons of Anarchy and Fast and Furious, Die Hard.
