Hard Favored Rage: A Cop's EMP Apocalypse Story

Rate this book
What would life look like after an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) robs Southern California of electricity, communications, and utilities while cars are starved of fuel? Ventura County, just north of Los Angeles, planned for a nuclear attack, but not a devastating EMP. In the jail, deputy Mika Fischer is left in the dark as the lights suddenly go out and the cell doors won’t lock. As inmates are released, the sheriff’s office must face the realities of the collapse of the modern world. In the aftermath of the apocalypse, the deputies’ honor is tested, but honor can’t fill empty bellies and soon their ranks begin to thin. After retreating to a well-prepared ranch with family and friends, deputies David Palmer and Sam Church realize that they cannot abandon the public. Soon they find that they have to make hard decisions that challenge the “latte and yoga pants” morality of the former world in a situation where ruthlessness is often the difference between life and death. With the sheriff trying to lead from a jail-turned-fortress, the survivors must rally together in order to defeat the conspiracy to conquer and plunder their home. As violence and desperation increases and a mysterious enemy has cast its hungry eyes on the county, the deputies must leave behind their old ways and find a balance between being a warrior and a keeper of the peace. In the apocalyptic chaos, can the men and women of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office keep the threads of society together while everything falls apart, or do they descend into the same brutality as the villains? Hard Favored Rage is based on the realities of emergency planning in the face of low probability, high impact events that highlight the shortcomings of a technology and infrastructure dependent nation. SENSITIVE For those readers who are particularly sensitive to vulgar language, this book may not be suitable for all audiences. For maximum verisimilitude, this book is written in the daily vernacular of law enforcement officers which is often quite coarse.

Heavy Alt right slant....disappointed

I read his second book and kind of liked it....however super disappointed in this book....it is written from a odd alt right slant. If the author could have left the political rhetoric out of it...would have been much better...but...nope...Hillary, Obama, Maga, and the political alt right views are jammed into the storyline....basically taking you away from the storyline and into some batcrap sleazy political mini rants....completely ruins the storyline...he had some interesting points but those points, tips were lost and buried by political nonsense. Decide what you want your story to be...old creepy guy sitting in his basement political propaganda for the tin foil alt right believing in oceanfront property in Arizona....or a great disaster story for the majority of readers who actually read and comprehend. Ps....this isn't even remotely close to one second after. You have potential if you just leave politics out of it.

It was a very wordly book. Interesting by a law enforcement point of view. I can see this happening and how some law enforcement people would still like to do right and stay on the job. They had a very hard time of what they should do as everything breaks down. How to punish for certain crimes and what crimes to let go. It would be a very hard decision when people in charge leave (Run away) and it is left to others to make their decisions. If you would like to see another point of view on an EMP subject please read this book.

Reality can be painful

30 year retired COP here, and just finished this book. I was not expecting much, and was totally surprised at the reality and understanding the tactics, and the possibility of an EMP strike in our country. I agree on how bad it could be.
The author gets it, he is also obviously a cop, Ventura Sherriff’s Dept is a good organization. I worked many times with VCSO….I was with KCSO, we were neighbors.
Helo 1 my call sign….and a good friend of Deputy Tom Collins, RIP.

A realistic story about the EMP threat

A good story without the apocalypse porn that is in so many of this type. Thank you for the work you put into it. I'm headed to the next one now.

A really good read

Really enjoyed this book. As a retired deputy from a rural western state I enjoyed the story, character's and the cop insights. Pick it up and plan to read the whole day.

Well Done

Good read, more realistic than some within the genre, and more frightening. I hope the federal and state governments are taking steps to harden our grid. Wishful thinking!
