A Trace of Revenge

Rate this book
A young boy is left for dead by the assassin who has just bludgeoned his parents.

Matt Walker witnesses the murder of his parents but is able to escape and remains alive. He loses his ability to hear but finds out he has a unique power called Psychometry. This power is an ability to “trace” or know an object’s history, just by touching it.

A few years later, a top-secret government armament is stolen during a deadly hijacking at sea and someone intends to sell the powerful weapon to fulfill their own twisted ambitions.

At the same time, a ruthless mob boss has a gruesome secret that he must protect no matter the cost.

All it takes is something as unassuming as a foul ball hit at a Major League baseball game, to send all of these characters and events spiraling on a collision course aboard the most unique cruise ship ever built and send Matt on the quest to find his parents’ killer.

‘The boy wasn’t supposed to be home, Magnetti snarled to himself!‘

Florida author Lyle Howard teaches journalism classes to aspiring young writers when he is not writing his popular novels. Lyle is a Benjamin Franklin Digital Award SILVER HONOREE for his book "It's About Time”. He has published five novels to date – all in the category of suspense thrillers.

Writing thrillers takes a special talent – that ability to pull the reader into the story to the point that the terror is contagious. Lyle clearly has that gift, as an excerpt from the opening of the book demonstrates: ‘Halfway into the living room, as he stood next to his father’s favorite recliner, he heard it— a shriek so blood-curdling in its tenor that his bladder was terrified into release. A scream so shrill in its urgency, that it made the pencils clatter to the floor. Matthew Walker stood frozen in place, trembling, protected only by a pair of scissors that, even when new, weren’t capable of cutting through more than one piece of construction paper at a time. It was his mother! The plaintive wail came twice more before it was abruptly cut off mid-scream. Safety scissors upraised, stocking feet begging for traction, Matthew raced for his parents’ bedroom door. He yanked open the door... He was right! The monster was there, standing on the other side of his parents’ bed! Backlit against the meager light that filtered into their bedroom through the window curtains, the ogre seemed to have no specific profile. It was a common shape, and it was holding something over its head... what was that? He couldn’t make it out. The monster gradually turned his head in the boy’s direction. His worst nightmare was coming true... it had no face! There was nothing above its neck, but a pair of bright white eyes that burned with an incendiary fury that Matthew knew couldn’t be human! Out of the merciless night sky, a bolt of lightning followed by a deafening clap of thunder shook the house. Illuminated by the momentary brightness, Matthew could see that it was a baseball bat that the creature held, and it was dripping with a dark liquid and some unnamable stuff that dripped off it in grisly-looking chunks. He had to warn his parents! When the boy turned his attention to the head of the bed, he realized that he was too late! What he had feared most in his fantasies had somehow become a gruesome reality. In his impressionable young mind, the “little man’s” cowardly procrastination had cost his parents their lives.’

The plot is complex but well woven – ‘A young boy is left for dead by the assassin who has just bludgeoned his parents. All it takes is something as unassuming as a foul ball hit at a Major League baseball game, to send all of these characters and events spiraling on a collision course aboard the most unique cruise ship ever built and send Matt on the quest to find his parents’ killer.’

Introducing the psychic phenomenon of psychometry is a stroke of genius and makes this thriller a cut above most. Lyle Howard knows his game – well!

Military espionage. Organized crime. Psychometry. Somehow, Lyle Howard made it work and was able to throw in some wisecracks while he was at it.
Matthew Walker experienced something that no seven year old child should ever have to and is scarred terribly because of that. To add to his troubles, he is now deaf with a special gift which feels more like a curse to him.
Out at sea, we have a military crime of epic proportions taking place. And then inland, we’re shown two crime bosses and their operations. Honestly, I was wondering how the author would be able to tie them together but he did it seamlessly. Treason and drama were somehow linked in a way that fit perfectly. There was even a touch of romance to keep things interesting.
I loved the characters in this book. Toby Biltson added a delightful touch of humor which caused me to chuckle out loud at some points. Even crazy Nick Coltello’s antics with poor Jimmy Diaz came across as hilarious at some points. There was a very uncomfortable scene with Peter Mason and Gerald Banks which made me laugh out loud. The author was able to flawlessly inject humor into the most unexpected situations.
I did not expect the twist at the end and actually gasped out loud when it happened. That came completely out of left field. I love when books surprise me and that rarely ever happens.
I am from the Caribbean and we do not play baseball here. But I am going to tell the author that if he was playing baseball, this book is definitely a home run. The only disappointment for me was that this book is not the first of a series. Mr Howard, if you’re reading this, please consider writing a sequel. I would really like to know what happens to Matthew Walker and his gift.

WHAT I LIKED

The humor: The banter between some of the characters, particularly Toby Biltson and numerous other characters was hilarious. Jimmy Diaz and Nick Coltello had a particularly funny scene where Jimmy is completely exasperated and has some really amusing thoughts as a result.
The twist ending: Like I said prior, it shocked me. Considering that’s very rare, the author gets bonus points here.

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE

The errors: There were some errors that proofreading could have prevented. It didn’t take away from the essence of the book but the name mix-ups were obvious and a bit annoying. That’s why I did not give the book 5/5 stars

In A Trace of Revenge, Matt Walker witnessed his parents’ murder and narrowly escaped with his life. Although he can no longer hear due to this terrifying ordeal, he discovers he has an unique power: the ability to trace an object’s history by touching it.

Seeking revenge for what happened to his parents, Matt is dead-set on tracking down the killer, no matter what the cost. Add in the theft of a top-secret government weapon, the most unique cruise ship ever built, and a ruthless mob boss with a harrowing secret, and you have an edge-of-your-seat thriller that is fast-paced, not predictable at all, and solidly escorts the reader from one chapter to the next.

Took me a little to get into it but then it started to piece together. A boy left behind after his parents were brutally murdered and he was left with no hearing but was given a gift of pyschometry. A great fast paced mystery which keeps you hooked to the end. Look forward to the next book

Excellent book. Good prologue to set up the premise. A little introduction to a few of the characters before setting off into a convoluted, multi layered story. A little far fetched but fast paced and engaging. Wrapped up very nicely. A lot of work went into that planning and layout of this story.

Different

The book had a different perspective on things. A little too wordy. I liked the broad spectrum of people's lives.

This was a really intriguing book. It starts with a young boy being left for dead after his parents have been bludgeoned to death by an assassin, but thought to just be a home invasion gone wrong. The young boy is Matt Walker, who survives and loses the ability to hear but somehow gains a new sense – that of Psychometry. He ends up moving to live with his grandparents and finds his grandfather is unable to cope with his ‘deaf’ speech, while his grandmother takes him from specialist to specialist, for him to show off his new sense.

Years later, a gangster boos, who is losing his hold on reality, finds out his secret dumping ground is possibly going to be built on. The person attempting to build on the deserted land is Mason, a rich businessman, whose wealth came from his drug dealing father. Mason wants to build a new baseball arena and also has the launch of his super-sized hydrofoil cruise line happening soon.

There are close links between what has happened to Matt and his parents and other events occurring later on in the story. A deadly hijacking on the high seas - with a top secret weapon being stolen from a ship. The catching of a baseball during the batting practice at an exhibition game brings everything together and Matt closer to finding his parents killer.

Matt is a great character, as are his girlfriend (almost) Simone, the police detective, coroner and even the Naval investigator. They are a great group of people on the ‘good’ side of the equation and the villains on the ‘bad’ side are quite nasty pieces of work! The things humans can do to others, all for money, power, or their own gratification are invented here but have close representations in the real world.

A really well thought out storyline, with a believable young man as the main character, struggling with his own limitations and extra power. I really enjoyed reading this book and would love to hear if there will be any more books with this character. I will now have to go back and catch up with some of the author’s books. I would recommend this book to all other readers – it was such a good read and keeps a wonderful secret twist right until the end!

I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

It started out great. Three different stories. One is a little boy who is attacked and left for dead after the brutal killings of his parents. Switch to an accountant nerd who works for his brother-in-law, hides the brother-in-law's profits from the government and is tired of his life and his wife. Switch to a traitorous naval captain also tired of the hand fate has dealt him. Now we come to the rescue ship. So much wrong with this chapter. Capt Fitzpatrick puts on his wetsuit while on deck, "awkwardly walked over to the railing with his flippers slapping on deck", yet in the very next sentence he was going to wait to put his fins on. Huh? After spitting into his mask, which the internet assures me should be done immediately before diving, the captain had plenty of time to observe the scene and talk to his diving partner. Underwater, the captain had what can only be described as an attack of hysteria. Not confidence inspiring. Difficult to finish the book because it had such a promising start.

Ending was a real surprise!!

I have had the privilege of reading all of Mr. Howard’s books and I think this is now my new favorite. The book definitively will hold your attention. As a former teacher of the Deaf, I particularly liked Matt and Simone’s characters. The whole idea of psychometry was very fascinating. I loved the author’s note. We do need to focus on what we have in common and try to understand each person’s exceptionality. Please take the time to read this novel. You will not be disappointed!

Good read, kept me engaged. There were some glaring errors in the editing. Matt was 9yrs old in the beginning. ("I am 9, I am 9yrs old") At the party, the older couple sitting with Matt & Simone were insulted by Andrew and left the table. Then later, when Matt was looking for Simone, the older couple suddenly didn't know him at all. ("We thought he was to old for her") some grammer/misprints too. I was was confused a few times.

I had to read this on my phone so it did take a while because my eyes would kill after an hour but other than that I truly enjoyed this book.

It’s beyond what I have been reading in a long time but brought back to the story telling of Dean Koontz and that was what sold this for me.

The beginning is gripping the middle does get a little slow but all and all it was a solid read and I am glad I had the opportunity to review this.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I had a bit of trouble following this book as it has several stories working at the same time. Lots of action, some gruesome murders, and two deaf characters. I gave it four stars because in the end all the stories were brought to a reasonable close.

This is the first Lyle Howard book I've read and I can highly recommend reading it. Warning though, the proofreader did a lousy job, there are all types of bobo's which messed with my reading flow, but it is definitely a great read. Storylines and characters all came together to make a five 🌟read. I would really love to see this become a series so I could visit these great characters again.

A young character with a future.

This is a great book. I would like to read more about this young man with the hidden talent. He should join forces with the detective and the doctor to have many new adventures helping them clear their backlog of unsolved cases. Let the series begin......

Excellent Third Book

Book 2, Eye For An Eye, was too bloody and wife quit before she finished. Home Run on this book!

Please review the name of the two Coast Guard ships. The did get mixed up at least twice.

We both can't wait to start Book 4.

A great whodunit!

A Trace of Revenge by Lyle Howard is told from many different angles. The reader will not quite grasp how they are intertwined until the ending. Every character and storyline added another piece to the puzzle. The setup was by far my favorite part of this book. The best way to describe the setup is to think of it as an enormous game of Clue. The entire time I was reading, I was trying to figure out whodunit, how are the characters connected and how will it end. Spoiler alert – it was not Colonel Mustard in the library with a candlestick.

As I mentioned, this story is told from many different angles so there were many main characters introduced. Matthew Walker, Dr. Tony Bilston, Detective Lauren Knight, Peter Mason, Nicky the Knife and Gerald Banks are just some of the characters the reader will meet. Each one adds a little pizzazz to the mix and brings the story to life. It is no surprise that I think the author did a great job with character development. Each one had their own set of everyday struggles, which I think helped to make them relatable. My favorite one was Dr. Tony Bilston. He was quite the character. He was funny, witty, intelligent and yet had a humungous heart.

Where this book fell short for me was the conclusion. The story started out with a bang and quickly picked up momentum, which only increased in the final chapters, and then the story just ended rather abruptly. It almost felt like the conclusion was rushed. I found this to be quite odd because one of the very first things that I noticed about this story was how descriptive and well put together it was. It is fair to point out however, that the author didn’t leave any loose ends.

A brilliant, enchanting , gripping story all the way!!!

It all starts with a baseball bat killer, a young survivor who loses his hearing but acquires additional strange skills. In come a Chief Petty Officer Simms, Captain Sowell, murdered Commissioner Beckwith, Admiral Buer along with the most famous ME Dr. Tony Bliston, Detective Lauren King, young Matt's girlfriend Simone along with evil characters like Nicky Coltello and Peter Mison.

The delightful plot takes the readers on an exciting rollercoaster of events that also includes a hydrofoil enabled special Ship called Hydra who adds extra thrills to the already intrepid and humorous adventure! The book has to be read to understand what I am trying to convey about this one-of-its kind of book. I discovered that I have more books by this author in my collection. I am off to read them!!!

Well Put Together

While looking for a new book to read, the story description in my daily Robin Reads Team email caught my interest. Once started, I could not stop reading. The characters were well put together. The twists in the plot left you questioning your conclusions. Attempting to decide which of his books will be next.

A fast moving story that sticks to the story line without any profanity and needless sex scenes. Really enjoyed the deafness angle and a little look at the compensation they must use.
